ABSTRACT

The energy consumption of Chinese materia medica industry is astonishing. The steam consumption of the heavy concentrating section accounts for about 60% of the whole plant, or even higher. Membrane concentration technology has the important advantages of “low energy consumption and low cost”, but it is restricted by the respective defects caused by the technical principles of different membrane processes. Our research group introduces the international advanced integrated design strategy and method in view of the key technology of “reverse osmosis and membrane distillation integration” which is expected to suitable for the concentrated demand of Chinese medicine pharmaceutical industry. Taking the representative Chinese herbal compound prescription as the experimental system, a three-dimensional model of "time-material rheological characteristics-membrane mass transfer process" was established by using rheological theory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as experimental system and dynamic and precise analysis of technological process. The rheological law of traditional Chinese medicine materials and its influence on membrane concentration process were explored by means of multi-disciplinary methods. The mass transfer effect and mechanism of membrane concentration process on traditional Chinese medicine materials were elaborated. The equilibrium points of critical osmotic pressure (RO process) and critical flux (membrane distillation process) were found. The optimal combination schemes of reverse osmosis (RO) and membrane distillation (MD) were explored. In short, we solved the key technical problems of the membrane concentration process, which provided support for the complete set of technical equipment and the technological design, and promoted the theoretical and technological innovation of TCM pharmaceutical engineering.

ABSTRACT

Quality by design (QbD) concept is an advanced pharmaceutical quality control concept. The application of QbD concept in the research and development of pharmaceutical processes of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) mainly contains five parts, including the definition of critical processes and their evaluation criteria, the determination of critical process parameters and critical material attributes, the establishment of quantitative models, the development of design space, as well as the application and continuous improvement of control strategy. In this work, recent research advances in QbD concept implementation methods in the secondary development of Chinese patent medicines were reviewed, and five promising fields of the implementation of QbD concept were pointed out, including the research and development of TCM new drugs and Chinese medicine granules for formulation, modeling of pharmaceutical processes, development of control strategy based on industrial big data, strengthening the research of process amplification rules, and the development of new pharmaceutical equipment..

ABSTRACT

A perspective analysis on the technological innovation in pharmaceutical engineering of Chinese medicine unveils a vision on "Future Factory" of Chinese medicine industry in mind. The strategy as well as the technical roadmap of "Chinese medicine industry 4.0" is proposed, with the projection of related core technology system. It is clarified that the technical development path of Chinese medicine industry from digital manufacture to intelligent manufacture. On the basis of precisely defining technical terms such as process control, on-line detection and process quality monitoring for Chinese medicine manufacture, the technical concepts and characteristics of intelligent pharmaceutical manufacture as well as digital pharmaceutical manufacture are elaborated. Promoting wide applications of digital manufacturing technology of Chinese medicine is strongly recommended. Through completely informationized manufacturing processes and multi-discipline cluster innovation, intelligent manufacturing technology of Chinese medicine should be developed, which would provide a new driving force for Chinese medicine industry in technology upgrade, product quality enhancement and efficiency improvement.

OBJECTIVE:To provide reference for improving teaching quality for pharmaceutical engineering major of Pharma-cology Course. METHODS:According to the current status and deficiencies on Pharmacology Course in universities,combined with own teaching experience and understanding,the author explored,four aspects. RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS:Pharmaceutical engineering major lacks specialized text books,and is in short of class periods and absence of experimant classes. Establishing rea-sonable teaching evaluation feedback mechanism,innovating teaching mode,setting up virtual simulation laboratory and sharing network resource may stimulate the enthusiasm of the students’self-learning,cultivate the students' ability to apply knowledge to practice and contribute to the improvement of teaching quality.
