ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To observe the clinical effect of moxibustion combined with plucking technique at Jiquan (HT 1) for preventing peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC)-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs of malignant tumor patients.@*METHODS@#A total of 80 malignant tumor patients undergoing PICC were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 40 cases in each one. In the control group, the routine care for PICC was exerted. In the observation group, besides the routine care, moxibustion combined with plucking technique at Jiquan (HT 1) was added. Mild moxibustion was exerted along the venous distribution of PICC (avoiding the entry site) for 10 to 15 min, and then, the circling moxibustion was applied to Quchi (LI 11), Xuehai (SP 10) and Tianfu (LU 3), 3 to 5 min at each acupoint. Finally, plucking technique was given at Jiquan (HT 1) for 5 to 10 min. This combined therapy was intervened since the 2nd day of PICC placement, once daily, 5 times a week, for 3 weeks totally. The incidence of the PICC-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs was compared between the two groups on day 42 of placement. On day 2, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 of PICC placement, the peak systolic velocity (PSV) and the end-diastolic velocity (EDV) of the subclavicular vein on the placement side were observed separately in the two groups.@*RESULTS@#The incidence of the PICC-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (2.5% [1/40] vs 17.5% [7/40], P<0.05). From day 7 to 35 of PICC placement, PSV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side was higher than that on the day 2 of PICC placement in the observation group (P<0.05). On day 28 and 42 of PICC placement, PSV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side was lower than that on the day 2 of PICC placement in the control group (P<0.05). In the observation group, EDV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side was higher than that on the day 2 of PICC placement from day 7 to 28 of PICC placement (P<0.05). In the control group, EDV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side from day 28 to 42 of PICC placement was lower than that on the day 2 of PICC placement (P<0.05). From day 7 to 42 of PICC placement, PSV and EDV of the subclavicular vein on the placement side in the observation group were all higher than those in the control group (P<0.01, P<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The combined treatment of moxibustion with plucking technique at Jiquan (HT 1) can effectively prevent PICC-related venous thrombosis in the upper limbs and improve venous blood flow velocity in malignant tumor patients.

ABSTRACT

AIM To investigate the effects of drying temperature, growing area and plucking time on hederacoside C,α-hederin from leaves of Hedera helix L..METHODS Three batches of H.helix leaves plucked in different time from two growing areas were dried in a vacuum oven to the constant weight at 60 ℃,70 ℃,80 ℃,90 ℃ and 105 ℃,respectively. Two saponins in the processed leaves were determined by HPLC.The powders of the processed H.helix leaves of different batches were mixed with proper ratios, which were determined by least squares optimization method with constraints.RESULTS The content of hederacoside C in the processed H.helix leaves of the three batches increased while that of α-hederin decreased with increasing temperature. The relative error between measured value and desired contents of hederacoside C and α-hederin in the mixed H.helix leaves was less than 5.5%.CONCLUSION The effects of three factors on the content of two saponins in the H.helix leaves are in the order of drying temperature, growing area and plucking time.Mixing processed H.helix leaves of different quality statues reasonably can control the contents of two saponins in a certain range.

ABSTRACT

The experiment was conducted to study different methods of pasture sampling, to estimate the chemical composition of the diet of Holstein steer, and grazing pasture of oat (Avena strigosa Schreb)and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam). The methods evaluated were Clipping Close by Soil (CCS), Hand-Plucking (HPL) and Rumen Evacuation (REV). The averages for crude protein (CP), total digestible nutrients (TDN), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were 9.7, 62.2, 64.5 and 33.1% for the CCS treatment; 9.8, 65.4, 59.6 and 30.0% for HPL, and 11.4, 70.8, 51.6 and 25.5% for REV, respectively. There was no statistical difference between CCS and HPL methods, however, in relation to the REV method, both underestimated protein and energy concentration, and overestimated the amount of cell walls in the diet. The conclusion is that rumen evacuation may be an adequate method to characterize the diet consumed by steers on oats and ryegrass pastures.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania appears as incomplete alopecia due to patients own repeated manipulations of the hair. But there are few available clinicopathologic data in Korea. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological feature of trichotillomania and the experimental pathologic findings after hair plucking in rabbits. METHOD: Through retrospective study on patients who were diagnosed as trichotillomania from 1988 to 1997 at the Department of Dermatology in Pusan National University Hospital, we observed the clinical and histopathological findings in 20 cases of trichotillomania as well as histopathologic changes of hair follicle and associated structure after hair plucking in rabbits with 4 days interval. RESULTS: 1. The mean age of onset was 15.7 years and female were 12 cases(60%). 2. The school age(between 7 and 18 years) was most common as 15cases(75%) 3. Among initial sites of involvement, parietal region was the most common(10 cases, 55%), followed by frontal(5 cases, 25%), temporal(2 cases, 10%), and occipital(2 cases, 10%) region. 4. Some patients complained pruritus(25%), chronic headache(10%) and had onychophagia (20%), trichophagia(5%) and thumb sucking(5%). 5. Many patients were not typical in history, and 14 cases(70%) denied hair-plucking history. 6. Results of twelve patients with psychiatric consultation revealed obsessive disorder(4 cases, 33%), social phobia(2 cases, 17%) and dysmorphic disorder(1 case, S%). 7. The most common presumptive triggering factor was mental stress related to school work(5 cases, 25%). 8. The characteristic findings of histopathologic examination in 20 cases were empty hair follicles without perifollicular infiltration(100%) and increased catagen hair(90%) with normal anagen hair(85%), trichomalacia(40%). 9. In experimental hair plucking of rabbit, soon after hair plucking, dilated empty root sheaths, perifollicular hemorrhage were observed. These findings are similar in trichotillomania. Catagen evolution, sebaceous proliferation and hyperplasia at 4th day, prominent bulge region at 8th day, growing epithelial sheaths into deep dermis at 12th day, many anagen hair at 20th day were observed. CONCLUSION: Trichotillomania was more frequent in young than adolescent and female than male. Histopathologically, the most characteristic finding was increased catagen hair without perifollicular inflammation. In hair follicle regeneration of rabbit after plucking, all hair follicles changed into catagen and telogen stage simultaneously and new hair growth was observed.

ABSTRACT

Observation of hair roots by simple plucking is a comnon methad in trichology. But the plucking method is subject to artificial deformation of hair roots during the procedure and the possibility of the artifact may be greater when hair roots are in pathological state. Treatment of the scalp tissue with 1 M CaC12 permits epidermodermal separation and subsecuent harve.sting of hair follicles without any damage on the structures. To make sure if the possible artificial deformation of the hair roots of plucking method could affect significantly the overall evaluation of the hairs in alopecia areata, authors compared the results of plucking method(total 171 hair roots) with the results of CaCl2 method(total l94 roots) in 15 cases of alopecia areata. The sites of taking hair roots by the two rnethocds were located side by side at the edges of the bald areas. The results were as frllows: 1. The average percentages of actual dystrophic hairs in 15 alopecia areat.a patients are 55% by plucking method and 53% by CaCl2, method, thus showing no significant difference in overall evaluation of the hair roots. 2. The shapes of proximal hair shafts obtained by plucking were similar with the shape obtained by CaCl2 method.
