ABSTRACT

Resumen El Museo de la Medicina Mexicana es un lugar dedicado a la divulgación de la historia de la medicina, en especial la de nuestro país. El museo se ubica en el Palacio de la Escuela de Medicina en la ciudad de México. En este trabajo se presentan los antecedentes del Museo de la Medicina Mexicana, elemento clave que fue del Departamento de Historia y Filosofía de la Medicina (DHyFM) de la UNAM en la enseñanza y divulgación de la historia de la medicina. Por ello, indicaremos los antecedentes, información de sus promotores, los trabajos a favor del museo, el origen de la colección museográfica y las primeras exposiciones.


Abstract The Museum of Mexican Medicine is a place dedicated to the divulgation of the history of medicine especially Mexico's history. The museum is located in the Palace of the School of Medicine in Mexico City. In this work we present the background of the Museum of Mexican Medicine, a key element of UNAM's Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine (DHyFM) for teaching and divulgating the history of medicine. Therefore, we will indicate the background, information of its promoters, works for the museum, the origin of the museographic collection and the first exhibitions.

ABSTRACT

Introducción: es conocida la actividad del aceite esencial de tomillo como promotor de crecimiento en pollos de engorde, pero su aplicación directa en producción se dificulta debido a su inestabilidad asociada a su alta volatilización. Objetivo: desarrollar un microencapsulado que incluya al aceite esencial de tomillo y se evalúe su desempeño en campo. Metodología: la técnica empleada para la microencapsula-ción fue la de secado por aspersión, utilizando como biopolímeros goma arábiga (GA), maltodextrina (M) o almidón de ñame succinatado (AÑS). Se establecieron las condiciones de emulsificación (paso previo a la microencapsulación), así como las condiciones para la obtención de las micropartículas, mediante la aplicación de un diseño estadístico experimental (DEE). Adicionalmente, se caracterizó la morfología, estabilidad, comportamiento de liberación y desempeño en campo de la formulación obtenida bajo las condiciones definidas. Resultados: se seleccionaron las matrices de los biopolímeros GA/M y GA/M/AÑS que conformaron el material de recubrimiento de las micropartículas. La eficiencia de encapsulación fue de 87,5 %, su tamaño de partícula de 74,5 µm, su índice de dispersión de 2,4 y tuvo un rendimiento de 48,5%. El ensayo de estabilidad demostró que la cubierta polimèrica ejerce cierta protección a la pérdida del aceite esencial. Los estudios de liberación evidenciaron la modulación de la liberación del activo. El estudio en campo demostró que el sistema microparticulado presenta un comportamiento estadísticamente similar al producto comercial que sirvió de comparador. Conclusión: este microencapsulado podría ser empleado como promotor de crecimiento en la producción de pollos de engorde.


SUMMARY Introduction: The biological activity of the thyme essential oil is known to work as growth promoter on broilers, but its direct applicability on production is difficult due to its instability associated to its volatilization. Aim: To develop a micro-encapsulated thyme essential oil and its performance in diets for broiler chickens. Methodology: The technique used for the microencapsulation was the spray drying process, using the Gum Arabic (GA), Maltodextrin (M) or Starch Yam succinate (SYS) as biopolymers. The emulsification conditions (previous step to the micro-encapsulation) and the conditions to obtain the microparticles were stablished, through the implementation of a statistical experimental design (SED) The formulation obtained under defined conditions is additionally characterized in terms of morphology, stability, release behavior and field performance. Results: The biopolymer matrixes GA/M and GA/M/SYS were selected for the covering material of the microparticles. The encapsulation efficacy was 87.5 %, its particle size was 74.5 [zm, the dispersity index 2.4 and a yield of 48,5%. The stability test proved that polymeric cover exerts some protection to the loss of the essential oil. The release studies demonstrated the release modulation of the active ingredient. The field study proved that the microparticulate system presents a statistical behavior like the commercial product used as comparator. Conclusion: This approach suggests that this microencapsulation method could be used as a growth promoter in the production of broiler chickens.


Introdução: a atividade do óleo essencial de tomilho como promotor de crescimento em frangos de corte é conhecida, mas sua aplicação direta na produção é difícil devido à sua instabilidade associada à sua alta volatilização. Objetivo: desenvolver um microencapsulado que inclua óleo essencial de tomilho e avaliar seu desempenho em campo. Metodologia: a técnica utilizada para microencapsulação foi a secagem por spray dryer, utilizando como biopolímeros goma arábica (GA), maltodextrina (M) ou amido succinato de inhame (ASI). As condições de emulsificação (etapa anterior à microencapsulação) foram estabelecidas, bem como as condições de obtenção das micropartículas, através da aplicação de um desenho estatístico experimental (DEE). Adicionalmente, foram caracterizados a morfologia, estabilidade, comportamento de liberação e desempenho em campo da formulação obtida nas condições definidas. Resultados: foram selecionadas as matrizes biopoliméricas GA/M e GA/M/AÑS que formaram o material de revestimento das micropartículas. A eficiência de encapsulamento foi de 87,5 %, seu tamanho de partícula foi de 74,5 [zm, seu índice de dispersão foi de 2,4 e teve um rendimento de 48,5%. O teste de estabilidade mostrou que a cobertura polimérica exerce alguma proteção contra a perda de óleo essencial. Os estudos de liberação evidenciaram a modulação da liberação do princípio ativo. O estudo de campo mostrou que o sistema microparticulado apresenta comportamento estatisticamente semelhante ao produto comercial que serviu de comparador. Conclusão: este microencapsulado pode ser utilizado como promotor de crescimento na produção de frangos de corte.

Aims@#Plant growth-promoting bacteria are the key components of a biofertilizer. This study was aimed to isolate and identify the predominant bacteria found in a foliar biofertilizer and characterizes the potential of the bacterial isolates as plant growth promoters.@*Methodology and results@#Potential bacteria with plant growth-promoting activities were isolated from a foliar biofertilizer on HiCrome™ Bacillus agar and Nutrient agar. Bacteria with unique colonial morphology were selected and categorized by Gram’s differential staining. Subsequently, the bacterial isolates were being further characterized for plant growth-promoting potentials, such as the production of indole acetic acid (IAA), 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase and siderophore; as well as the ability of nitrogen fixation and phosphate/potassium solubilization. Based on the characterized traits, three bacterial isolates, namely M17, M22 and M52 showed great potential for being a plant growth promoter. Based on their 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, M17, M22 and M52 were identified as Leclercia adecarboxylata, Margalitia shackletonii and Lysinibacillus pakistanensis, respectively.@*Conclusion, significance and impact of study@#Bacterial isolates exhibiting plant growth-promoting activities were successfully isolated from a biofertilizer and identified in this study. This finding provides an insight into the potential bacteria of a foliar fertilizer that may promote plant growth. Identification of these plant-growth promoters may help the scientists and agrochemical manufacturers to determine and disclose the key microorganisms of their biofertilizers, thereby contributing to the improvement of biofertilizers and promoting them as reliable alternatives to chemical fertilizers.

ABSTRACT: The food industry is in a continuous search for strategies of reducing of antibiotic residues in livestock production, given the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In that context, there is a consistent increasing in the usage of alternative feed phytogenic additives. Due to the pharmacological, the plants Marrubium vulgare and Leonurus sibiricus, are both potential replacements for growth-promoting antibiotics. This study evaluated the productive performance and analyze the sensory qualities in the meat of broiler that were administered M. vulgare and L. sibiricus infusions. A total of 320 chicks from an poultry farm were distributed in 8 groups groups according treatments by 28 days: Control Group (Saline); Positive control (tylosin 1%, 50 ppm); Groups of M. vulgare (MV) infusion: 2% (MV2), 4% (MV4) and 6% (MV6); and groups treated with L. sibiricus (LS) infusion: 2% (LS2), 4% (LS4) and 6% (LS6), all of them received relative doses corresponding to the live weight percentage in milliliter. There was weght gain in MV6 and LS6 group and a better food conversion in MV4, MV6, LS4, and LS6. In addition, weight gain and enhancement of the pectoral muscles were observed in these groups. The sensory analysis revealed that the broilers' meat of MV had a more intense flavor. For marketing purposes the meat from birds that received LS had a better demand. Improvement of productive performance and sensory qualities of the broilers meat might be associated with the phytobiotic activity in it. Therefore, MV and LS can be used as natural growth promoter in broilers.


RESUMO: A indústria de alimentos busca a redução de resíduos de antibióticos na criação intensiva de animais de produção devido ao desenvolvimento de bactérias resistentes. Nesse contexto, tem havido um aumento no uso de aditivos fitogênicos alternativos nas rações. Devido às suas propriedades farmacológicas demonstradas anteriormente as plantas Marrubium vulgare e Leonurus sibiricus tem potencial como aditivos em substituição aos antibióticos promotores de crescimento. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo e analisar as qualidades sensoriais da carne de frangos que receberam a administração da infusão da M. vulgare (MV) e da L. sibiricus (LS). 320 pintainhas de um criatório industrial foram distribuídas em oito grupos experimentais: Grupo Controle (Salina); Controle Positivo (tilosina 1%, 50 ppm); Grupos tratados com MV: 2% (MV2), 4% (MV4) e 6% (MV6); e grupos tratados com a LS: 2% (LS2), 4% (LS4) e 6% (LS6), e todos eles receberam doses relativas correspondendo à percentagem de peso vivo, em mililitros. Houve maior ganho de peso no 28o dia nos grupos MV6 e LS6 e melhor conversão alimentar em MV4, MV6, LS4 e LS6. Além disso, foi observado aumento no peso e circunferência dos músculos peitorais nesses grupos. A análise sensorial revelou que amostras de carne do grupo MV tiveram sabor mais intenso do que no grupo controle. Na intenção de compra, a carne dos animais que receberam LS teve maior preferência. A melhoria do desempenho produtivo e das características sensoriais da carne de frangos pode estar associada à atividade fitobiótica. Assim, MV e LS podem ser usados como promotores de crescimento naturais para frangos de corte.

Introducción: La formación de promotores de salud contribuye a modificar los elementos desfavorables para la salud. Con la nueva Constitución venezolana, la salud pasa a ser un derecho social fundamental y el Estado recupera su papel. Esta nueva relación Estado-Sociedad es la base de la Misión Barrio Adentro, respuesta para la solución de las principales necesidades sociales y de salud. Objetivo: Describir la contribución de los promotores comunitarios de salud desde Barrio Adentro a los referentes teóricos relacionados con la promoción de salud en Venezuela. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica utilizando diferentes motores de búsqueda, mediante lo cual se pudo acceder a varias bases de datos referenciales que ofrecieron textos completos, índices y publicaciones periódicas académicas, entre ellas BIREME, Ebsco, SciELO regional, fuentes de información disponibles en la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), como LILACS, MEDLINE, Hinari y otras. Conclusiones: Se ha desarrollado la Misión Barrio Adentro, proyecto integral de salud interrelacionado con educación, deporte, alimentación, cultura y seguridad social, una real estrategia de Atención Primaria de Salud y, consiguientemente, la promoción de salud como quehacer primordial. El consultorio popular de Barrio Adentro constituye el eslabón imprescindible en el proceso de formación de los promotores comunitarios de salud y no existen antecedentes de una estrategia de formación de promotores comunitarios de salud adecuada a las condiciones sui géneris de la Misión Barrio Adentro(AU)


Introduction: The training of health promoters contributes to modifying the elements unfavorable for health. With the new Venezuelan Constitution, health becomes a fundamental social right and the State recovers its role. This new State-Society relationship is the basis of the Barrio Adentro Mission, a response to the solution of the main social and health needs. Objective: To describe the contribution of community health promoters, as part of the Barrio Adentro Mission, to the theoretical references concerning health promotion in Venezuela. Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out using different search engines, by means of which it was possible to access several referential databases that offered full texts, indexes and academic periodicals, including BIREME, Ebsco, regional SciELO, and sources of information available at the Virtual Health Library (VHL), such as LILACS, MEDLINE, Hinari, and others. Conclusions: The Barrio Adentro Mission has been developed as a comprehensive health project interrelated with education, sports, food, culture and social security, a real strategy for primary health care and, consequently, health promotion as primary task. The Barrio Adentro popular clinic is the essential link in the training process for community health promoters. There is no history of any training strategy for community health promoters adequate to the sui generis conditions of the Barrio Adentro Mission(AU)

ABSTRACT

Genetically engineered plants have varied applications in agriculture for enhancing the values of food and feed.Genetic engineering aims to introduce selected genetic regions with desirable traits into target plants for bothspatial and temporal expressions. Promoters are the key elements responsible for regulating gene expressionsby modulating the transcription factors (TFs) through recognition of RNA polymerases. Based on theirrecognition and expression, RNA polymerases were categorized into RNA pol II and pol III promoters.Promoter activity and specificity are the two prime parameters in regulating the transgene expression. Since theuse of constitutive promoters like Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S may lead to adverse effects on nontarget organisms or ecosystem, inducible/tissue specific promoters and/or the RNA pol III promoters providemyriad opportunities for gene expressions with controlled regulation and with minimum adverse effects.Besides their role in transgene expression, their influence in synthetic biology and genome editing are alsodiscussed. This review provides an update on the importance, current prospects, and insight into the advantagesand disadvantages of promoters reported thus far would help to utilize them in the endeavour to developnutritionally and agronomically improved transgenic crops for commercialization.

BACKGROUND Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is considered a promising live bacterial delivery system. However, several proposals for rBCG vaccines have not progressed, mainly due to the limitations of the available expression systems. OBJECTIVES To obtain a set of mycobacterial vectors using a range of promoters with different strengths based on a standard backbone, previously shown to be stable. METHODS Mycobacterial expression vectors based on the pLA71 vector as backbone, were obtained inserting different promoters (PAN, PαAg, PHsp60, PBlaF* and PL5) and the green fluorescence protein (GFP) as reporter gene, to evaluate features such as their relative strengths, and the in vitro (inside macrophages) and in vivo stability. FINDINGS The relative fluorescence observed with the different vectors showed increasing strength of the promoters: PAN was the weakest in both Mycobacterium smegmatis and BCG and PBlaF* was higher than PHsp60 in BCG. The relative fluorescence observed in a macrophage cell line showed that PBlaF* and PHsp60 were comparable. It was not possible to obtain strains transformed with the extrachromosomal expression vector containing the PL5 in either species. MAIN CONCLUSION We have obtained a set of potentially stable mycobacterial vectors with a arrange of expression levels, to be used in the development of rBCG vaccines.

ABSTRACT

O Exército Zapatista de Liberação Nacional (EZLN) e suas bases de apoio são formados predominantemente por indígenas que vivem na região de Chiapas, no México. O movimento constrói uma profunda experiência de autonomia, o que passa por diferentes dimensões da vida coletiva. Neste artigo, pretendemos, a partir de um trabalho de campo realizado na região, nos focar na saúde autônoma. A concepção de saúde está estritamente relacionada com a noção de terra, já que para ter saúde é preciso pertencer a um cosmos, permeado pelo respeito recíproco entre os mais diferentes seres, em uma luta constante para engrandecer o ch'ulel (espírito) e, com isso, caminhar rumo ao lekil kuxlejal (Bem Viver). Para colocar em prática esses princípios, o cuidado em saúde é protagonizado pelos promotores autônomos de saúde e pelas assembleias comunitárias.


The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN, in Spanish) and its bases are formed predominantly by indigenous languages living in the region of Chiapas, Mexico. The movement builds a profound experience of autonomy, which goes through different dimensions of collective life. In this article, we intend, from a fieldwork carried out in the region, to focus on autonomous health. The conception of health is closely related to the notion of land, since in order to have health it is necessary to belong to a cosmos, permeated by mutual respect between the most different beings, in a constant struggle to ennoble the ch'ulel (spirit) and thus to walk to the lekil kuxlejal (Good Living). To put these principles into practice, healthcare is carried out by autonomous health promoters and communal assemblies.


El Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) y sus bases de apoyo son formados predominantemente por indígenas que viven en la región de Chiapas, México. El movimiento construye una experiencia profunda de autonomía, que atraviesa diferentes dimensiones de la vida colectiva. En este artículo, nos proponemos, a partir de un trabajo de campo realizado en la región, enfocar la salud autónoma. La concepción de salud guarda una estrecha relación con la noción de tierra, ya que para tener salud es necesario pertenecer a un cosmos, impregnado por el respeto mutuo entre los seres más diferentes, en una lucha constante para engrandecer el ch'ulel (espíritu) y, de este modo, caminar hasta el lekil kuxlejal (Buen Vivir, también llamado Vivir Bien). Para poner en práctica estos principios, la asistencia en salud se lleva a cabo por los promotores autónomos de salud y por las asambleas comunitarias.

Resumen Objetivos: Dar a conocer la metodología y los resultados de la formación de promotores de la salud cardiovascular en el programa " Cartago da vida al corazón" Introducción: La enfermedad cardiovascular es el problema número uno de la salud en una gran cantidad de países de Latinoamérica. Esta enfermedad es de origen más conductual que biológico y se inicia en gran proporción por efecto de los estilos de vida inadecuados en la población. La intervención de la enfermedad se realiza usando estrategias individuales para los casos y poblacionales para los grupos en riesgo. La participación de la comunidad en la producción de su salud cardiovascular es una estrategia que ha demostrado tener un mayor impacto que las intervenciones individuales. Basado en la idea promocionada por el Ministerio de Salud de los Educadores Comunitarios de Salud (ECOS), se adaptó y validó una estrategia para promocionar la salud cardiovascular en las comunidades cartaginesas. Métodos: Se identificaron y motivaron los candidatos, se capacitaron durante un mínimo de 90 horas en los conocimientos básicos sobre los factores de riesgo cardiovascular, su medición y técnicas educativas. Se realizaron actividades de práctica con el grupo en formación y se le brindaron los elementos mínimos necesarios para que puedan planificar sus acciones elaborar proyectos comunales simples y evaluar su trabajo. Teóricamente a los promotores formados se les dio seguimiento sobre sus actividades en la comunidad y se les dio refrescamiento sobre conocimientos y practicas útiles en sus acciones. Resultados: Se han realizado seis cursos de formación en el que participaron 94 voluntarios, de éstos 50 se mantienen activos, algunos realizan acciones comunales como dar educación a grupos comunales, otros tienen grupos para realizar ejercicio físico y la mayoría colaboran con el programa en la realización de los talleres comunales de promoción de la salud cardiovascular. El 100% de los evaluados, ha logrado modificar por lo menos 1 factor de riesgo, 87% han modificado 2 factores, 76% modificaron tres factores, 52% cuatro factores y 32% 5 factores y más. Discusión: Es bien teorizado que la salud se producirá en mejor forma cuando se incorpore activa y sostenidamente la participación de la comunidad en los programas de salud. Sin embargo, este siempre ha sido un problema dado la participación siempre es escasa. En este proyecto se partió de la hipótesis que se mejora la participación y la acción dando a los voluntarios los elementos siguientes: motivación, capacitación, independencia funcional, seguimiento y evaluación. Se persigue que los voluntarios se empoderen del problema cardiovascular y sus factores de riesgo en sus comunidades y que por su propia iniciativa desarrollen acciones de intervención del riesgo. Los que están trabajando lo hacen bien, la falla ha estado en el seguimiento y re-motivación pues no se ha llevado a cabo en la forma en que propuso originalmente.


Abstract Aims: Publish the methodology and the results of the cardiovascular health promoters training in the Program Cartago da vida al corazón" (Catago gives life to the heart"). Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is the first health problem in a large number of Latin American countries. This disease have a behavioral origin rather than biological and initiate in a large proportion because of inappropriate life styles in the population. The control of this disease is performed using individual strategies for cases and population strategies for groups in risk. Community participation in its own cardiovascular health production is a strategy that has shown having a better impact than individual interventions. Based on the idea of Educadores Comunitarios de Salud (ECOS), Health Community Teachers, promoted by the Ministry of Health, a strategy was adopted and validated for promoting cardiovascular health in the communities-of-Cartago-city. Methods: Candidates were identificated and motivated. They were trained for a minimum of 90 hours about basic knowledge related to cardiovascular risk factors, its measurement and educative techniques. It was conducted practical activities with the group being trained and they were given minimum required elements so they can plan their actions, prepare simple comunal projects and evaluate their work. Trained promoters were monitored about their activities in the community and were updated about their knowledge and useful practices for their actions. Results: Six training courses were conducted with the attendance of 94 volunteers from which 50 are still active. Some of they conduct activities like educate community groups, others have groups for physical exercising and most of them participate in the program conducting cardiovascular health promotion community workshops. Out of those that were evaluated, 100% have modified at least one risk factor, 87% have modified two factors, 76% modified three factors, 52% four factors and 32% five factors ore more. Discussion: It is well theorized that health will be produced better when community participation in the health programs is active and continuous. However, this have always been a problema because of the scarce participation. This Project started from the hypothesis that participation and action are improved by giving to the volunteers the following elements: motivation, training, functional independence, monitoring and evaluation. It is pursued to empower volunteers about the cardiovascular problem and its risk factors in their communities and to achieve that they develop risk intervention actions by their own initiative. Those that are working are doing well, the fault has been the monitoring and the remotivation since it has not been conducted as it was originally proposed.

ABSTRACT

Plant growth promotion by microorganisms may be a viable alternative to increase lettuce production through pathogens control and nutrients absorption increase. Trichoderma and Pseudomonasgenus are examples of widely studied microorganisms with the capacity to promote plant growth. However, there are still gaps regarding the action of the combined effect of these two microorganisms. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of Pseudomonas sp. UAGF14 and Trichoderma aureoviride URM5158 on the development of lettuce plants. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments: CONT (control), CM (soil with organic fertilization), CMB (soil withorganic fertilization and Pseudomonas sp.), CMF (soil with organic fertilization and T. aureoviride), and CMFB (soil with organic fertilization, Pseudomonas sp. and T. aureoviride), with ten repetitions. At 30, 40 and 60 days after sowing, the following parameters were analyzed: plant and canopy height and number of leaves. At 60 days after emergence, shoot dry matter, leaf area, root dry matter, root length and chlorophyll were analyzed. Catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase enzymatic activity were determined. The CMFB treatment had the highest means of lettuce growth promotion, confirming the synergistic effect of the combination of the two microorganism types, as it increased height, canopy, shoot and root dry matter, and chlorophyll levels compared to CONT, although did not differ from CM in some variables. Enzymatic activity was also influenced by the action of these microorganisms combined, evidencing by polyphenol oxidase increase. The CMFB or CM were efficient in promoting lettuce growth, showing positive response to the plant morphological and physiological characteristics. However, few responses were observed in lettuce plant growth in the first cycle evaluated after 60 days, compared CM and CMFB treatments, but both treatments showed superiority in lettuce plant growth submitted to CONT treatment. Therefore, further studies are needed to estimate the long-term effects of combined effect of Pseudomonas sp. UAGF14 and T. aureoviride URM5158 on crop productivity in field conditions.


A promoção do crescimento das plantas por micro-organismos pode ser uma alternativa viável para aumentar a produção de alface através de controle de patógenos e aumento da absorção de nutrientes. O gênero fúngico Trichoderma e o gênero bacteriano Pseudomonas são exemplos de micro-organismos amplamente estudados com capacidade para promover o crescimento da planta. No entanto, ainda existem lacunas quanto à ação do efeito combinado desses dois micro-organismos. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito combinado de Pseudomonas UAGF14 e Trichoderma aureoviride URM5158 sobre o desenvolvimento de plantas de alface. O delineamento experimental foi completamente casualizados, com cinco tratamentos: CONT (controle, sem fertilização orgânica), CM (solo com fertilização orgânica), CMB (solo com fertilização orgânicae Pseudomonas sp.), CMF (solo com fertilização orgânica e T. aureoviride) e CMFB (solo com fertilização orgânica, Pseudomonas sp. e T. aureoviride), com dez repetições. Aos 30, 40 e 60 dias após a semeadura, foram analisados os seguintes parâmetros: altura da planta e dossel e número de folhas. Aos 60 dias após a emergência, a matéria seca da parte aérea, a área foliar, a massa seca das raízes, o comprimento radicular e a clorofila foram analisados. Catalase, peroxidase e atividade enzimática da polifenol oxidase foram determinadas. O CMFB apresentou o maior crescimento de alface, confirmando o efeito benéfico da combinação dos dois tipos de micro-organismos com a planta, na medida em que aumentou a altura, o dossel, a matéria seca da parte aérea e da raiz, e os níveis de clorofila em relação ao CONT, embora não tenha diferido do CM em algumas variáveis. As atividades enzimáticas também foram influenciadas pela ação desses micro-organismos combinados, evidenciada pelo aumento de polifenol oxidase. O CMFB ou CM foram eficientes na promoção do crescimento da alface, mostrando respostas positivas às características morfológicas e fisiológicas. Entretanto, poucas respostas foram observadas no crescimento da alface noprimeiro ciclo da planta avaliado depois de 60 dias, comparando os tratamentos CM e CMFB, mas ambos tratamentos mostraram superioridade em relação ao crescimento das plantas de alface submetidas ao tratamento controle. Por isso, são necessários futuros estudos para estimar à longo prazo o efeito combinado de Pseudomonas sp. UAGF14 e Trichoderma aureoviride URM5158 na produção de cultura em condições de campo.

ABSTRACT

The application of plant growth regulators can manipulate the development of cultivated plants, and their physiological effects may be reflected in the physiological quality of the seeds. This study evaluated the effects of plant growth regulators (PGR) on the physiological quality of crambe seeds produced in the 2014 and 2015 harvests. During crop development, we applied two foliar sprayings of the following treatments: 1) control treatment with distilled water; 2) indole-3-acetic acid 100 mg L-1 (IAA); 3) 3-gibberellic acid P.A. 100 mg L-1 (GA3); 4) commercial PGR Stimulate® 6 mL L-1. The seeds were harvested and evaluated for water content, germination percentage and germination speed index (GSI), electrical conductivity and concentrations of leached Ca, Mg and K ions. Means were compared by Tukey ́s and Dunnett tests (p<0.05). Applying Stimulate® increased the germination percentage and the germination speed index, while IAA application showed an opposite effect, increasing the electrical conductivity of crambe seeds. Calcium leaching decreased with IAA application, and all regulators reduced K leaching. We therefore infer that the application of plant growth regulators influences the physiological quality of crambe seeds.

ABSTRACT: This research seeks to present Community Lay Advisor interventions as a health promoting strategy that have appeared in the international literature, in order to highlight these enabling elements in the intervention's implementation and establish a comparison among the aspects addressed in the analyzed experiences and the "Schoolbased Oral Health Promoters Program" at the Universidad de La Frontera in Temuco, Chile. A comprehensive scoping review was held between February and March 2018, with searches performed in both the academic and grey literature. Peer-reviewed scientific papers were found using the interdisciplinary database Scopus (including MEDLINE) and EBSCOhost, while grey literature and media sources were extracted from the Google and Google Scholar search engines, supplemented with a visit to the EPES foundation in Chile and an analysis of the reference lists for the selected articles. 369 articles were identified, of which 23 met eligibility criteria for this review. Based on the analysis of the experiences, some facilitators were found more pertinent when achieving the goals concerning the intervention's design, implementation and assessment. This paper makes recommendations for the design and execution of peer-led health promotion interventions in order to increase its effectiveness and success rate.


RESUMEN: Esta investigación busca presentar las intervenciones del Community Lay Advisor como una estrategia de promoción de la salud que ha aparecido en la literatura internacional, para resaltar estos elementos habilitadores en la implementación de la intervención y establecer una comparación entre los aspectos abordados en las experiencias analizadas y el "Programa de Promotores de Salud Bucal en las Escuelas" de la Universidad de La Frontera, en Temuco, Chile. Entre febrero y marzo de 2018 se llevó a cabo una revisión exhaustiva del alcance, con búsquedas realizadas tanto en la literatura académica como en la gris. Se encontraron artículos científicos revisados por pares utilizando la base de datos interdisciplinaria Scopus (incluyendo MEDLINE) y EBSCOhost, mientras que la literatura gris y las fuentes de medios se extrajeron de los motores de búsqueda Google y Google Scholar, complementados con una visita a la fundación EPES en Chile y un análisis de las listas de referencias de los artículos seleccionados. Se identificaron 369 artículos, de los cuales 23 cumplieron con los criterios de elegibilidad para esta revisión. Sobre la base del análisis de las experiencias, algunos facilitadores resultaron más pertinentes al alcanzar los objetivos relacionados con el diseño, la implementación y la evaluación de la intervención. Este documento hace recomendaciones para el diseño y la ejecución de intervenciones de promoción de la salud dirigidas por pares para aumentar su eficacia y su tasa de éxito.

ABSTRACT: This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of growth promoter additives an alternative to antibiotics on performance, intestinal morphology and on microbiota of 21-to-35-day-old piglets. A total of 160 commercial crossbred piglets (males and females) with initial weight of 6.10±0.709kg were allotted in a completely randomized design with five treatments: Basal diet - Negative Control (NC); Basal diet + antibiotic (PC); Basal diet + mannanoligosaccharides (MOS); Basal diet + organic acids (OA), Basal diet + mannanoligosacharides + organic acids (MOS+OA), eight replicates and four piglets per experimental unit. The inclusion of additives in the diets had no effect (P>0.05) on the final average weight of piglets. Similarly, no effects (P<0.05) were observed on average daily feed intake and on average daily weight gain. The feed conversion improved (P<0.01) with the inclusion of additives in the diets compared to piglets fed with the NC. There was no effect (P>0.05) of the dietary additives on intestinal morphology and microbiota composition (enterobacteria and lactobacilli). Use of antibiotics, prebiotics, organic acids or prebiotics associated with organic acids in the diet improves feed conversion of piglets from 21 to 35 days of age. The additives have no major effects on piglets' intestinal morphology and microbiota.


RESUMO: O experimento foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de aditivos promotores de crescimento como alternativa ao uso de antibióticos no desempenho, na morfologia intestinal e na microbiota de leitões dos 21 aos 35 dias de idade. Um total de 160 leitões híbridos comerciais, machos castrados e fêmeas, com peso inicial de 6,10±0,709kg, foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos: Ração basal - Controle Negativo (CN); Ração basal + antibiótico (CP); Ração basal +mananoligossacarídeo (MOS); Ração basal + ácido orgânico (AO); Ração basal + mananoligossacarídeo + ácido orgânico (MOS+AO), oito repetições e quarto animais por unidade experimental. A inclusão dos aditivos não teve efeito (P>0,05) no peso médio final dos leitões. Da mesma forma, não foram observados efeitos (P>0,05) dos aditivos no consumo de ração médio diário. A conversão alimentar melhorou (P<0,01) com a inclusão dos aditivos na ração comparados com os animais alimentados com a ração CN. Não houve efeito (P>0,05) dos aditivos na morfologia do epitélio intestinal e na composição da microbiota (enterobactérias e lactobacilos). A utilização de antibiótico, probióticos, ácidos orgânicos ou de probióticos associado com ácidos orgânicos na ração melhora a conversão alimentar de leitões, dos 21 aos 34 dias de idade. Os aditivos não tiveram efeitos na morfologia intestinal e na microbiota dos leitões.

Resumen Objetivo: Proponer a Héctor Abad Gómez como educador popular en salud desde un acercamiento a su vida y obra. Metodología: A través de la investigación histórico-pedagógica se realizó una lectura crítica de 173 textos escritos por Abad Gómez o escritos sobre su vida, seleccionando 70 de ellos. Discusión: Héctor Abad Gómez recrea en sus obras los postulados de Paulo Freire sobre lo que es un educador popular, integrando en su vida principios y valores como la coherencia ético-política, la transformación de la realidad y el trabajo directo con las comunidades; estos tres elementos toman forma en uno de sus grandes propuestas: las promotoras rurales de salud. Conclusiones : el trabajo con las promotoras, así como sus acciones como defensor de derechos humanos y su vida como educador, ubican a Héctor Abad como uno de los primeros educadores populares en Colombia, donde la salud y la vida aparecen como escenarios de reivindicación de la dignidad humana.


Abstract Objective: To propose Hector Abad Gomez as the people's healthcare educator by approaching his life and his work. Methodology: This historical pedagogical research conducted a critical reading of 173 written by Abad Gómez or about his life, selecting 70 of them. Discussion: Hector Abad Gomez recreated in his works Paulo Freire's tenets regarding what it is to be a people's educator, integrating in his life principles and values like ethical-political coherence, the transformation of reality and direct Community work. These three items make up one of his greatest proposals: Rural Healthcare promoters. Conclusions: Hector Abad's work with promoters, his actions as a human rights advocate and his life as an educator rank him as one of the first people's Educators in Colombia, where Healthcare & Life appear as scenarios for the vindication of human dignity.


Resumo Objetivo: Propor ao Héctor Abad Gómez como mestre popular em saúde desde uma aproximação a sua vida e obra. Metodologia: A través da investigação histórico-pedagógica se fez uma leitura criteriosa de 173 textos escritos pelo Abad Gómez ou escritos sobre a sua vida, escolhendo 70 deles. Discussão: Héctor Abad Gómez recreia nas suas obras os postulados do Paulo Freire do que é um mestre popular, unindo na sua vida princípios e valores como a coerência ético-política, o troco da realidade e o trabalho direto com as comunidades; estes três elementos tomam forma numa das grandes propostas: as promotorias rurais de saúde. Conclusões: O trabalho com as promotoras, assim como as suas ações como defensor de direitos humanos e a sua vida como educador, situam ao Héctor Abad como um dos primeiros mestres populares na Colômbia, onde a saúde ela vida aparecem como cenários de reivindicação da dignidade humana.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prebiotic effect of burdock (Arctium lappa) in commercial poultry. Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance parameters and the protection after challenge with Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Kedougou, with and without Bifidobacterium probiotic. In two trials, the chickens were fed with flour burdock 1% during 42 days. In the other two, the chickens were fed with fructan extracted from burdock (inulin), by gavage, at a concentration of 100 mg/bird, during the first three days of life. The results showed that the broilers treated with burdock flour showed underperformed, with less weight gain from the second week, and the worst results in the fattening stage. The treated birds had diarrhea and impaired intestinal integrity. However, the groups treated with the flour had a lower rate of intestinal colonization by Salmonella Kedougou, after challenge. No statistically significant differences were detected in the performance parameters of broilers receiving the inulin, and the morphometric analysis showed no lesions in the intestinal villi. However, there was no protection in the challenge with Salmonella Enteritidis, regardless of association with probiotic. These results demonstrated that the manner of administration has influence on the prebiotic effect of burdock. The burdock flour was administered for 42 days, which may have influenced intestinal mucosal injury. Instead, the inulin was given only in the first three days, which may have been insufficient for protection against Salmonella. New experiments are needed to determine an able formulation for a protective effect, without negative impact on growth, weight gain and feed conversion of the supplemented animals.(AU)


Este projeto teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito prebiótico da bardana (Arctium lappa) em aves comerciais. Foram realizados quatro experimentos para avaliar os parâmetros zootécnicos e o grau de proteção após o desafio com Salmonella Kedougou e Salmonella Enteritidis, com e sem a adição de probióticos à base de Bifidobacterium. Em dois experimentos, as aves receberam a farinha de bardana 1% na ração, durante 42 dias. Nos outros dois, as aves receberam o frutano extraído da bardana (inulina), por gavagem, na concentração de 100 mg/ave, nos três primeiros dias de vida. Os resultados demonstraram que os frangos tratados com farinha de bardana apresentaram desempenho zootécnico inferior ao controle, com menor ganho de peso a partir da segunda semana e piores resultados na fase de engorda. As aves tratadas apresentaram diarreia e comprometimento da integridade intestinal. Em contrapartida, os grupos tratados com a farinha tiveram menor taxa de colonização intestinal por Salmonella Kedougou, após o desafio. Não foram detectadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas nos parâmetros zootécnicos dos frangos que receberam a inulina, e a análise morfométrica não evidenciou lesões nas vilosidades intestinais. No entanto, não houve proteção no desafio por Salmonella Enteritidis, independentemente da associação com probiótico. Esses resultados demonstraram que o modo de administração tem influência sobre o efeito prebiótico da bardana. A farinha de bardana foi administrada por 42 dias, o que pode ter causado a lesão da mucosa intestinal. Em contrapartida, a inulina foi administrada apenas nos primeiros três primeiros dias, o que pode ter sido insuficiente para proteção contra Salmonella. Novos experimentos são necessários para determinar uma formulação capaz de promover efeito protetor, sem impacto negativo no crescimento, ganho de peso e conversão alimentar dos animais suplementados.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Genetic use restriction technologies (GURTs) were developed to preserve the intellectual property of genetically modified crops (GM) and ensure the return of investments made by industry to obtain technology delivered through seeds. The aims of this review are to discuss the GURTs and analyze their possible applications in integrated management of agricultural pests. There are two classes of GURTs: T-GURTs (trait-based GURTs), wherein the generated seed are viable, but the next generation does not express the trait of agronomic interest, and V-GURT (variety-based GURTs), in which plants produce non viable seeds. However, beyond the seed protection purpose, the GURTs could have also other application to solve agronomic problems. One of the most important is the use of GURTs as a tool to restrict gene flow of GM traits to relative weeds. In addition, it is proposed the use of this technology in integrated weed management by preventing the GMs seed germination, which produces volunteer plants that compete with the crop of interest. Also, these volunteer plants may serve as alternative hosts for insects and pathogens in between crop seasons. The GURTs could contribute to the control of undesirable agents in agricultural systems, reducing the use of pesticides and increasing crop yields.


RESUMO: As tecnologias genéticas de restrição de uso (GURTs) foram idealizadas a fim de preservar a propriedade intelectual de culturas geneticamente modificadas (GMs) e garantir o retorno dos investimentos feitos pelas empresas para a obtenção de tecnologias transmitidas via sementes. Os objetivos dessa revisão são discutir as GURTs e analisar suas possíveis aplicações no manejo integrado de pragas agrícolas. Existem duas classes de GURTs: a T-GURT (trait-based GURT), na qual as sementes produzidas são viáveis, porém as plantas da geração seguinte não expressam o caractere de interesse agronômico, e a V-GURT (variety-based GURT), na qual as plantas produzem sementes inviáveis. Contudo, além do propósito da proteção das sementes, o uso de GURTs poderia também ter outras aplicações na resolução de problemas agronômicos. Um dos mais importantes é o uso das GURTs como ferramenta para impedir o fluxo de genes de culturas transgênicas para plantas daninhas coespecificas. Além disso, propõe-se o uso dessa tecnologia no manejo integrado de plantas daninhas, por meio da prevenção da germinação de sementes GMs, que geram plantas voluntárias que competem com a cultura de interesse. Além disso, essas plantas voluntárias podem servir como hospedeiros alternativos para insetos e patógenos nos períodos de entressafra. Dessa forma, as GURTs poderiam contribuir no controle de agentes indesejáveis em sistemas agrícolas, reduzindo a utilização de agrotóxicos e aumentando a produtividade dos cultivos.

ABSTRACT Objective. Evaluate the use of probiotics in diets whit ingredients of animal or vegetable origin in production variables of broilers from 1 to 42 days of age. Materials and Methods. Were used 1056 one-day-old chicks, male, of lineage Ross 308, divided in to an experimental randomized design in 2X4 factorial arrangement, two origin of diet (animal or vegetable) and four promoters (antibiotic, two probiotics and a negative control) whit 6 replicates and 22 birds per unit. Results. At 7 days old there was a difference (p<0.05) in daily food intake, weight and weight gain and 14 days for weight, weight gain and mortality among diets. The feed conversion of 1-7 days did interaction (p<0.05) between types of diet and promoters. There was a difference (p<0.05) for weight and weight gain at 14 days of age between promoters. At 21 days of age presented mortality difference (p<0.05) for the type of diets; weight, weight gain, daily feed together and feed conversion showed difference for developers. At 28, 35 and 42 days old mortality and productive efficiency index showed difference (p<0.05) between the types of diets. Conclusions. The type of diet and growth promoter did not affect production variables, however, the viability improvement animal diets.


Objetivo. Evaluar el uso de probióticos en dietas con ingredientes de origen animal o vegetal sobre las variables productivas de pollos de engorde de 1 a 42 días de edad. Materiales y métodos. Fueron utilizados 1056 pollitos de un día de edad, machos de linaje Ross 308, distribuidos en un diseño experimental completamente al azar en un arreglo factorial 2X4 (dieta de origen animal o vegetal) y cuatro promotores (antibiótico, dos probióticos y un control negativo) con 6 repeticiones y 22 aves por unidad. Resultados. A los 7 días de edad hubo diferencia (p<0.05) en el consumo diario de alimento, peso y ganancia de peso y a los 14 días para peso, ganancia de peso y mortalidad entre las dietas. La conversión alimenticia de 1 a 7 días tuvo interacción (p<0.05) entre los tipos de dieta y los promotores. Hubo diferencia (p<0.05) para el peso y la ganancia de peso a los 14 días de edad entre los promotores. A los 21 días de edad la mortalidad presentó diferencia (p<0.05) para el tipo de dietas; el peso, ganancia de peso, consuno diario de alimento y conversión alimenticia presentaron diferencia para los promotores. A los 28, 35 y 42 días de edad la mortalidad y el índice de eficiencia productiva presentaron diferencia (p<0.05) entre el tipo de dietas. Conclusiones. El tipo de dieta y de promotor de crecimiento no afectan las variables productivas; sin embargo, la viabilidad mejora con las dietas de origen animal.

El consumo de probióticos se ha asociado con mejoras en algunos parámetros productivos como la conversión alimenticia y la ganancia de peso vivo, lo que se ve reflejado en el desarrollo y salud de las aves. el objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la influencia de la inclusión de cepas probióticas en la alimentación de pollos de engorde sobre parámetros productivos de importancia económica. se utilizaron 180 pollos machos (Cobb) de un día de edad, alimentados con cinco dietas: dieta comercial con y sin la adición de antibióticos, y a esta última se le adicionó una de tres diferentes cepas probióticas (Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus o Enterococcus faecium) en el agua de bebida (10(8) UFC/ml) durante 42 días. se evaluaron parámetros zootécnicos: consumo de alimento, peso corporal, conversón alimenticia (CA) y ganancia de peso (GDP); e indicadores productivos: supervivencia, factor de eficiencia americana (Fea), índice productivo (IP), eficiencia europea (EE) y eficiencia alimenticia (EA). El diseño estadístico utilizado fue de bloques al azar. La inclusión de probióticos, específicamente E. faecium, mejoró parámetros productivos (P < 0,05) como peso (2.730 g), conversión (1,55), GDP (53,59 g/día), FEA (172), iP (393), EE (400) y EA (63,11%). Por todo lo anterior, la utilización de probióticos, especialmente E. faecium, puede ser considerada como factor promotor de crecimiento durante todo el ciclo de producción del ave debido a que demostró tener efectos positivos, tanto en el desempeño productivo, como en el rendimiento económico del lote.


The intake of probiotics has been associated with improvements in production parameters such as feed conversion and body weight gain, which is reflected in the development and health of broilers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of probiotic strains in broiler feed on growth performance of economic importance. 180 one-day-old male chicks (Cobb) were used and fed with five diets: Commercial diet with and without the addition of antibiotic, to which was added one of three different probiotic strains (Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus or Enterococcus faecium) in the drinking water (108 CFU/ml) of animals over 42 days. Were evaluated zootechnical parameters: Feed intake, body weight, feed conversion (FC), weight gain (WG); and productive indicators: mortality, american efficiency factor (AFE), production index (PI), european efficiency (EE) y feed efficiency (FE). The statistical design used was a randomized blok. The inclusion of probiotics, specifically E. faecium, improved production parameters (P < 0.05) like: weight (2730 g), conversion (1.55), WG (53.59 g/day), AFE (172), PI (393), EE (400) and AE (63.11%). Therefore, the use of probiotics, especially E. faecium, can be considered as growth promoters throughout the production cycle because the bird proved to have positive effects on productive performance and economic performance of the batch.

ABSTRACT

Se realizó un estudio de intervención educativa en el Centro Penitenciario de Mar Verde en el municipio de Santiago de Cuba, de enero del 2006 a diciembre del 2007, con el propósito de disminuir la incidencia de sífilis, para lo cual se seleccionó un grupo de reclusos que fueron formados como promotores de salud para la prevención de las infecciones de trasmisión sexual y el virus de inmunodeficiencia humana/sida. Los resultados fueron comparados antes y después de la intervención educativa a través de la prueba de McNemar, con vistas a medir su impacto, el cual fue positivo debido a la disminución de los diagnósticos de sífilis, para una tasa de 1,1 por cada 100 habitantes.


An educational intervention study in Mar Verde Penitentiary Center in Santiago de Cuba, was carried out from January, 2006 to December, 2007, with the purpose of diminishing the syphilis incidence, for which a group of prisoners that were trained as health promoters for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus /aids was selected. The results were compared before and after the educational intervention through the McNemar test, aimed at measuring its impact, which was positive due to the syphilis diagnosis decrease, for a rate of 1.1 every 100 inhabitants.

ABSTRACT

cis, cis-muconic acid (MA) is an important platform chemical. Now, majority of reported engineered strains are genetically instable, the exogenous genes are expressed under the control of expensive inducer and the components of their fermentation medium are complex, thus large-scale microbial production of MA is limited due to the lack of suitable strains. Hence, it is still necessary to construct novel high-performance strain that is genetically stable, no induction and grows in simple inorganic fermentation medium. In this study, after 3 exogenous genes (aroZ, aroY, catA) for biosynthesis of MA were integrated into previously constructed 3-hydroshikimate producing Escherichia coli WJ060 strain and combinatorially regulated with 3 constitutive promoters with different strengths, 27 engineered strains were constructed. The best engineered strain, E. coli MA30 could produce 1.7 g/L MA in the simple inorganic fermentation medium without induction. To further enhance the production capacity of MA, the mutant library of E. coli MA30 was constructed by genome replication engineering and screened via high-throughput assay. After two-round screening, the new strain, E. coli MA30-G2 with improved production of MA was obtained, and the titer of MA increased more than 8%. Under the condition of 5 L fed-batch fermentation, E. coli MA30-G2 could produce about 11.5 g/L MA. Combinatorial regulation and high-throughput screening provide important reference to microbial production of other bio-based chemicals.
