ABSTRACT

Background Occupational injuries, which can result in absenteeism, disability, or death, are closely related to poor working conditions. However, the improvement of operating conditions are often time-consuming and require significant economic inputs. Both occupational psychology and enterprise risk factors have been proved to be related to the occurrence of occupational injuries, but their roles in the influence path of adverse working conditions leading to occupational injuries remain unclear. Objective To explore the roles of occupational psychology and enterprise risk factors in the impact of adverse working conditions on occupational injury, so as to provide a scientific basis for enterprises with adverse working conditions to carry out targeted occupational injury intervention programs. Methods The survey data of 5997 manufacturing enterprises were obtained from the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER) database. The data on enterprise risk characteristics, occupational injuries, working conditions, and occupational psychological factors were extracted and assigned. Occupational injury differences by enterprise categories were examined by chi-square test. Correlations between interest variables were evaluated by Spearman test. Path analysis with Bootstrap method was conducted using AMOS 26 software, and ratio of chi-square statistic to degree of freedom (χ2/ν), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) were used to evaluate the path model candidates. The effect size and its proportion were calculated for variables (occupational psychological factors, enterprise risk factors, and adverse working conditions) included in the final model. Results The M (P25, P75) scores of occupational injuries, adverse working conditions, and occupational psychological factors were 40 (20, 50), 50 (30, 60), and 20 (10, 30), respectively. The enterprises that reported occupational injuries accounted for 25.5% (1550 enterprises) of the total enterprises. Proportions of the enterprises that reported occupational injuries varied significantly by company scale, branch companies, temporary employment, language barriers, and establishment time (P<0.05). The results of Spearman test showed that occupational injuries were positively correlated with working conditions (rs=0.440), occupational psychological factors (rs=0.205), company scale (rs=0.307), temporary employment (rs=0.282), and language barriers (rs=0.158); but negatively correlated with branch companies (rs=−0.180) and establishment time (rs=−0.176) (P<0.05). In the path analysis, the fitness indexes of the final model were χ2/ν=2.85, CFI=0.997, TLI=0.993, and RMSEA=0.018 (90%CI: 0.011, 0.025). The indirect effect size values and constituent ratios of enterprise risk factors and occupational psychological factors in the effect of adverse working conditions on occupational injuries were 0.166 (30.01%) and 0.013 (3.13%) respectively. The indirect effect size value of occupational psychological factors in the effect of enterprise risk factors on occupational injuries and its constituent ratio were 0.022 and 6.85%. Conclusion Enterprises with adverse working conditions may control the risk of occupational injuries by offering better solutions to surmount language barriers and temporary employment, developing occupational psychological intervention and optimization programs such as improving working hours system. At the same time, large enterprises, enterprises without branches, or enterprises with a long history are the focus of occupational injury prevention and control.

ABSTRACT

Objective@# To explore the influence of marital status on the survival of patients with buccal mucosa squamous cell carcinoma (BMSCC) and to provide a scientific basis for risk assessment and nursing decisions for these patients.@*Methods @# A total of 1 006 BMSCC participants were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results(SEER) database. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to evaluate the effect of marital status (married, unmarried and unhappily married) on the survival of patients with buccal squamous cell carcinoma. The independent prognostic effect of marital status was further determined by univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis.@*Results@# Marital status was an independent prognostic factor for BMSCC patients (P=0.001). Married patients had the best survival, while separated/divorced/widowed patients had the worst survival (HR=1. 445, P=0.001), and never married patients had an intermediate risk (HR=1.297, P=0.040).@*Conclusion@#Marital status was an independent prognostic factor for BMSCC patients. Unmarried and unhappily married patients had worse survival, which suggests that we should pay more attention to patients’ marital status, especially unmarried and unhappily married patients.

ABSTRACT

Stroke has caused a heavy disease burden across the world, and it has become a worldwide public health problem. Several studies have assessed the relationship between psychological and social factors and risk of stroke so far. This paper summarizes the progress in epidemiological research on the relationship between psychological and social factors (depression, psycho-social stress, anxiety, loneliness, psychological distress, social support, social isolation, and social network) and the risk for stroke, the results of these studies were inconsistent. Most studies showed an association between these factors and the incidence of stroke, but there were still some studies showing no such association.

ABSTRACT

Although antiretroviral therapy appears to prolong the lifespan of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH), but the suicidal risk of these people is still significantly higher than the general population. Some PLWH had suicidal ideation, attempted suicide, and suicidal plan. The reasons for the high risk among these people mainly include as follows. ①The demographic factors include gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, race, etc. ②The social psychological factors are stressors (stressful or traumatic life events, social or interpersonal problems and mental illness), stigma, hiding HIV history, etc. Social or interpersonal problems include discrimination, social isolation, lack of social support, etc. Mental diseases include depression, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, etc. In order to reduce the suicidal risk of PLWH, the government and related organizations can research and improve these social psychological factors.

ABSTRACT

Lumbar disc herniation is an important cause of chronic low back pain, for which surgery has a great effect. However, there remain some residual symptoms, such as pain, disability, etc. It's effective for postoperative rehabilitation to relieve pain, and improve the disability and psychological status. However, the optimal rehabilitation program is controversial. So it's necessary to consider various aspects including time, site, frequency, intensity and pattern for an optimal rehabilitation choice, which needs further study. Psychological factors shall be concerned by medical workers as well.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated factors affecting the subjective experience of oral symptoms among 2,285 elementary school students in the fourth and sixth grades using the Korean survey on the Health of Youth and Children in 2010. After conducting chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests, we performed multiple logistic regression analysis to determine the factors affecting children's experience of oral symptoms. We found that the factors most frequently associated with the subjective experience of more oral symptoms were lower tooth brushing frequency, greater intake of foods that cause dental caries, higher stress levels, and lower levels of support from friends. In conclusion, determinants of children's oral health, such as children's oral health behaviors and psychological factors must be considered in a multifaceted approach to developing programs to promote oral health among children.

ABSTRACT

Massage therapy is a traditional, alternative and nonphamacological means of promoting rest and relaxation. However, nursing intervention by massage for middle-aged women is rarely practiced by nurses. The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of the hand and arm massage as an independent nursing intervention tool for middle- aged women. The data used in this research were collected from forty-nine subjects using a nonequivalent control group non- synchronized design. Twenty-four persons for the experimental group and Twenty-five persons for the control group were selected from D city and C city from July 1997 to September 2000. Subjects' ages were between forty and fifty-six years old with mean the age of 45.6. Hand and arm massage developed by Cayce and Reilly was applied to the experimental group for a session of 15 minutes two or three times a week for four weeks. The instruments used for the measurement of the subjects' stress, anxiety, depression and the middle-life crisis were Langners's 22-item Screening Score, Spielberger's State Anxiety Inventory, Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale, and Kim's Middle Life Crisis Scale(1988). These psychological factors were measured before and after the implementation of hand and arm massage. The data were analyzed with mean+/-s.d, percent, t-test, and a paired t-test. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Before the treatment, there were no significant differences between the two groups. 2. After the treatment, there were significant differences in the stress and the occurrence of mid life crisis between the two groups. The findings suggest that the use of the hand and arm massage for middle-aged women made significant changes in the level of stress and middle life crisis. Therefore, it is recommended that hand and arm massage be used as an independent nursing intervention tool for middle-aged women. For further research, is needed replication of this concept of research with different subjects in a larger population. Also, it is recommended to investigate the effects of massage with aroma therapy for the berefit of decreasing womens' stress level further.

ABSTRACT

Modern medicine is in the new phase of transform from biomedical model to bio-psycho-social medical model. Biological factors interact with the social and psychological factors. We should think highly of not only biological factor but also social factor and psychological factor in the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal tumor. It is an important mission of medical workers to carry out new medical model in clinical practice.
