ABSTRACT

Introdução: A odontologia legal permite a identificação humana por meio da comparação de dados observados em uma documentação odontológica ante mortem (AM) com as informações coletadas post mortem (PM), sendo os exames radiográficos grandes aliados neste processo. Objetivo: Demostrar a contribuição da radiografia panorâmica como fonte de informação para a identificação humana. Relato do caso: foi encaminhado um corpo carbonizado, com parte da região bucomaxilofacial preservada e que ao exame necroscópico era possível identificar a presença de restaurações e ausências dentais. A apresentação de radiografia panorâmica anterior à morte e a realização de exame radiográfico panorâmico no corpo carbonizado possibilitou a comparação de pontos coincidentes e divergências explicáveis, permitindo a identificação positiva do caso. Conclusão: Ao final da perícia foi determinada a identidade da vítima e foi comprovada a importância da radiografia panorâmica para a identificação humana com base em caracteres identificadores anatômicos e terapêuticos presentes no complexo bucomaxilofacial


Introduction: Forensic dentistry allows human identification through the comparison of data observed in ante-mortem (AM) dental documentation with information collected post-mortem (PM), with radiographic examinations being great allies in this process. Objective: To demonstrate the contribution of panoramic radiography as a source of information for human identification. Case report: a charred body was sent, with part of the oral and maxillofacial region preserved and upon necroscopic examination it was possible to identify the presence of restorations and missing teeth. The presentation of a panoramic radiograph prior to death and the performance of a panoramic radiographic examination of the charred body made it possible to compare coincident points and explainable divergences, allowing positive identification of the case. Conclusion: At the end of the forensic examination of the case, the identity of the victim was determined and the importance of panoramic radiography for human identification based on anatomical and therapeutic identifying characters present in the oral and maxillofacial complex was proven

ABSTRACT

Current COVID-19 radiological literature is dominated by CT and a detailed description of chest x-ray (CXR) appearances in relation to the disease time course is lacking. However, it poses a great challenge on the radiology department, as it is difficult to decontaminate entire CT suite(Zhao et al., 2020)11. This study is aimed to correlate clinical symptoms with the chest X-ray findings in COVID positive patients and to calculate the sensitivity and specificity of chest x ray in diagnosing COVID 19. The present study compares frequency and distribution of chest radiographic findings in COVID 19 positive symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Patients with a RT-PCR-positive results for COVID 19 infection were 668. Of these, 437 were males (65.4%), 230 females (34.4%) and 1 transgender (0.04%) with a mean age of 44 years (range 2–87 years). Only 18 CXRs were negative for radiological thoracic involvement (6.4%) among symptomatic patients (280). Among the baseline CXR of 668 patients, 375 (56.1%) were normal and 293 (43.8%) were abnormal. Sensitivity and specificity of CXR were 93.91% and 93.3% respectively. Positive and negative predictive values were 90.97% and 95.51% respectively. We found a statistically significant relationship between CXR severity score and age, symptoms, death (P<0.001).We even found significant relationship between age and symptoms, death of COVID positive patients (P<0.001). The relationship between CXR severity and gender, age and gender were not significant (P=0.539, P=0.864 respectively)

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Determinar la frecuencia de calcificación del complejo estilohioideo en radio-grafías panorámicas digitales de un centro radiológico. Métodos. El tipo de estudio fue cualitativo, diseño descriptivo, transversal y retrospectivo; se estudiaron 400 radiografías panorámicas digitales entre edades de 25 a 70 años. Se realizó una evaluación visual de las radiografías panorámicas digitales donde se observó el tipo y patrón de calcificación del ligamento estilohioideo. Resultados. El 56,8% presentó calcificación del complejo estilohioideo en radiografías panorámicas digitales; según sexo en el grupo femenino se presentó en un 64,6%; respecto al grupo etario el 65.8% presentó calcificación en adultos de 30 a 59 años; según el lado afectado el 71,4% fue bilateral, según la apariencia radiográfica el tipo I presentó una mayor frecuencia con un 50,1% en el lado derecho y el 62,5% en el lado izquierdo; finalmente el patrón de calcificación más frecuente fue el completamente calcificado con un 23,8% en el lado derecho y un 48,5% en el lado izquierdo. Conclusión. La frecuencia de calcificación del complejo estilohioideo en ra-diografías panorámicas digitales en la muestra estudiada fue alta por lo que es importante el uso de la radiografía panorámica como medio de diagnóstico para poder detectar este tipo de hallazgos que junto a una evaluación clínica nos permitan hacer un correcto diagnóstico en fin de un tratamiento adecuado.


Objective: To determine the frequency of the stylohyoid complex calcification in digital panoramic radiographs of a radiological center. Methods.The type of study was quali-tative, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective design; 400 digital panoramic radio-graphs between the ages of 25 and 70 were analyzed. A visual evaluation of the digital panoramic radiographs was performed to assess the type and pattern of the stylohyoid ligament calcification. Results. The 56.8% presented calcification of the stylohyoid com-plex in digital panoramic radiographs; according to sex in the female group it was present in 64.6%; Regarding the age group, 65.8% presented calcification in adults aged 30-59 years-old; According to the affected side, 71.4% were bilateral, according to the radio-graphic appearance, type I presented a higher frequency with 50.1% on the right side and 62.5% on the left side. Finally, the most frequent calcification was the completely calcified pattern, with 23.8% on the right side and 48.5% on the left side. Conclusion.The frequency of calcification of the stylohyoid complex in digital panoramic radio-graphs in the sample studied was high, so it is important to use panoramic radiography as a means of diagnosis to be able to detect this type of findings that, together with a clinical evaluation, allow us to make a correct diagnosis and perform an adequate treatment.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: A cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown origin was first reported in Wuhan China then the causative pathogen was identified and named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov2) and the associated disease was named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Chest radiograph has lower sensitivity for the detection of lung abnormalities but it has a role in disease progression and also in the late stages of COVID19. This study aims to evaluate the value of baseline radiographs in COVID-19-infected patients. Method: This is a retrospective study of COVID-19 patients with RT-PCR confirmation who were admitted to Eka Kotebe General Hospital and had baseline chest x-ray between April and May 2020. Baseline chest x-ray of all patients who have confirmed COVID-19 infection was reviewed and analyzed. Result: The study included 355 patients, 224 (63.1%) were male and 131 (36.9%) were female. Patient age ranged from 4 - 82 years with a mean age of 35. Two hundred twelve patients were symptomatic; the rest 143 were asymptomatic. Of the 355 baseline CXR, only 60 (16.9%) had abnormal radiographs and the rest 295 (83.1%) had normal radiographs. A combination of interstitial changes and GGO were the predominant descriptive finding accounting for 33.3% . Conclusion: Even if chest radiographs are important in the workup of patients with COVID-19 infection, the use of baseline radiographs in COVID-19 infection should not be a routine practice. Disease severity and timing of imaging appear to impact the rates of normal baseline imaging.

@#Introduction: The Intertrochanteric fracture is a common hip trauma encountered in elderly patients. There is a lack of general agreement regarding its surgical management and choice of implant. Purpose of this study to conclude the final decision matrix regarding surgical management of intertrochanteric fractures based on parameters assessed on plain radiographs and CT scan. Materials and methods: We have retrospectively evaluated 55 patients with intertrochanteric fractures presented to our institute after informed consent with radiographs and CT scans between July 2017 to July 2018. Assessment of various parameters regarding fracture geometry and classification as well as measurement was done. Results: Mean lateral wall thickness in present study was 20.76mm. Incidence of coronal fragments was 90.9% and absence of coronal fragment in 5 patients. We noted the cases with anterior comminution had also a posterior comminution rendered the fracture unstable in almost 20 % cases. Conclusion: Better understanding of fracture geometry by combined used of radiograph and CT scan enhanced preoperative planning, choice of suitable implant, helps in reduction manoeuvre and improving quality of osteosynthesis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the accuracy of different convolutional neural networks (CNN),representative deep learning models,in the differential diagnosis of ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst,and subsequently compare the diagnosis results between models and oral radiologists. Methods A total of 1000 digital panoramic radiographs were retrospectively collected from the patients with ameloblastoma (500 radiographs) or odontogenic keratocyst (500 radiographs) in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology,Peking University School of Stomatology.Eight CNN including ResNet (18,50,101),VGG (16,19),and EfficientNet (b1,b3,b5) were selected to distinguish ameloblastoma from odontogenic keratocyst.Transfer learning was employed to train 800 panoramic radiographs in the training set through 5-fold cross validation,and 200 panoramic radiographs in the test set were used for differential diagnosis.Chi square test was performed for comparing the performance among different CNN.Furthermore,7 oral radiologists (including 2 seniors and 5 juniors) made a diagnosis on the 200 panoramic radiographs in the test set,and the diagnosis results were compared between CNN and oral radiologists. Results The eight neural network models showed the diagnostic accuracy ranging from 82.50% to 87.50%,of which EfficientNet b1 had the highest accuracy of 87.50%.There was no significant difference in the diagnostic accuracy among the CNN models (P=0.998,P=0.905).The average diagnostic accuracy of oral radiologists was (70.30±5.48)%,and there was no statistical difference in the accuracy between senior and junior oral radiologists (P=0.883).The diagnostic accuracy of CNN models was higher than that of oral radiologists (P<0.001). Conclusion Deep learning CNN can realize accurate differential diagnosis between ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst with panoramic radiographs,with higher diagnostic accuracy than oral radiologists.

OBJECTIVES@#This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of congenital deciduous teeth absence and its permanent teeth performance type by using panoramic radiographs.@*METHODS@#A total of 15 749 panora-mic radiographs of 3-6-year-old children with deciduous dentition were collected from January 2020 to December 2021. The incidence of congenital deciduous teeth absence was observed, and the abnormality of permanent teeth was recor-ded. SPSS 24.0 software was used for statistical analysis.@*RESULTS@#The incidence of congenital deciduous teeth absence was 2.54% (400/15 749), which was found in 217 girls and 183 boys, and the difference between the genders was statistically significant (P=0.003). The absence of one and two deciduous teeth accounted for 99.75% (399/400) of the subjects. In addition, 92.63% (490/529) of mandibular deciduous lateral incisor was congenitally absent, 44.80% (237/529) of deciduous teeth was absent in the left jaw, and less than 55.20% (292/529) was absent in the right; the difference between them was statistically significant (P=0.017). The absence of 96.41% (510/529) deciduous teeth in the mandibular was significantly more than that of 3.59% (19/529) in the maxillary, and the difference between was statistically significant (P=0.000). Furthermore, 68.00% (272/400) and 32.00% (128/400) of deciduous teeth were absent in unilateral and bilateral, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P=0.000). Four types of congenital deciduous teeth absence with permanent teeth were observed as follows: 1) 73.91% (391/529) of permanent teeth was absent; 2) 20.60% (109/529) of permanent teeth was not absent; 3) the number of fused permanent teeth accounted for 4.91% (26/529); 4) the number of supernumerary teeth was 0.57% (3/529).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Although the absence of congenital deciduous teeth is less common than that of permanent teeth, it affects deciduous and permanent teeth to some extent. Dentists should pay attention to trace and observe whether abnormalities are present in the permanent teeth and take timely measures to maintain children's oral health.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveThe study aims to determine whether the horizontal posterior displacement of the distal clavicle in patients with acromioclavicular joint dislocation can be corrected via the application of modified intraoperative axillary fluoroscopy. MethodsFrom February 2019 to April 2021, 50 patients with Rockwood type Ⅲ acromioclavicular joint dislocation eligible for inclusion were randomly divided into two groups: the normal (32 cases) and the experimental (18 cases). The conventional anteroposterior position radiographs were obtained to detect the surgery effect on the patients in the normal group. In experimental group, modified intraoperative axillary radiographs were obtained, with the concept of polar coordinates introduced to reduce the horizontal posterior translation of the clavicle. Then we compared the perioperative parameters, such as average operative time, intraoperative blood loss between the two groups. The Constant score was used for assessing the postoperative function of the shoulder joint in the follow-up visits. ResultsNo statistically significant difference was found in gender, age, duration of injury, underlying diseases, intraoperative blood loss and operative time between the two groups. The postoperative shoulder function score of the experimental group was higher than that of the normal group. ConclusionsThe application of modified intraoperative axillary fluoroscopy is recommendable for accurately reducing posterior translation of the distal clavicle, and meanwhile helpful for the precise placement of the clavicular plate.

Abstract Introduction Fishbone foreign body retention is one of the most common problem with various clinical manifestations from asymptomatic, abscess formation, and perforation to mediastinitis with subsequence morbidity and mortality. Accurately identifying the location of the fishbone leads to precise removal, which, in turn, prevents serious consequences. Digital radiographs have been widely used for diagnosis, but many studies show poor sensitivity. Object The present study was designed to compare the diagnostic performances of digital radiograph and low-dose computed tomography (CT) for fishbone retention and to demonstrate the radiation dose of the two modalities. Methods We collected 2 pieces of fishbone from each of the 15 species commonly eaten in Southeast Asia. We embedded each fishbone in a fresh pig's neck, then subjected the pig's neck to lateral soft tissue neck digital radiograph. The locations to embed included tonsil, base of tongue, and upper esophagus. Then, we subjected the same specimen to a CT scan. Two experienced radiologists interpreted each image. Results Visibility in the digital radiograph group was 13%, and in CT images group, it was 87% regardless of the locations. The average radiation dose from digital radiographs was 0.4 mGy (radiation dose field), while from CT images it was 8.6 mGy (CT dose index). Conclusion Most of the common fishbones in Southeast Asia could not be visualized by digital radiograph when embedded in the neck. Computed tomography scans demonstrated better diagnostic performance of fishbone retention compared to digital radiographs, regardless of the embedded location.

Introducción: La osteoporosis es una enfermedad del sistema esquelético provocada por una disminución progresiva de la densidad mineral ósea y el deterioro de la microarquitectura, que aumenta el riesgo de fracturas. Por tanto, se hace necesario adoptar medidas de diagnóstico que permitan la detección temprana de alteraciones de la densidad mineral. Dado que las radiografías dentales son rutinarias y permiten examinar las estructuras óseas de los maxilares, se han propuesto como herramientas primarias de diagnóstico de osteoporosis. Objetivo: Examinar la viabilidad y el avance del uso de radiografías periapicales y panorámicas como predictoras tempranas de osteoporosis. Comentarios principales: Fue realizada una revisión bibliográfica sobre cómo las radiografías periapicales y panorámicas, junto con técnicas de aprendizaje automático e índices morfométricos, pueden ser predictores tempranos de osteoporosis. Consideraciones globales: Radiografías panorámicas y periapicales pueden ayudar en la predicción precoz de osteoporosis. Para ello el odontólogo debe contar con amplia experiencia en la interpretación de imágenes radiográficas o ser especialista en radiología oral o cirugía maxilofacial. Por otro lado, existen herramientas computacionales fundamentadas en aprendizaje automático que han mostrado resultados de identificación de osteoporosis comparables a los arrojados por radiólogos. Estas herramientas pueden servir de apoyo a profesionales menos experimentados. Los odontólogos están llamados a ser los primeros inspectores de cambios anómalos en la densidad ósea. Deben remitir oportunamente los pacientes con sospecha de osteoporosis al médico especialista(AU)


Introduction: Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system caused by a gradual reduction in bone mineral density and deterioration of the microarchitecture, raising the risk of fracture. It is therefore necessary to implement diagnostic actions allowing early detection of mineral density alterations. Given the fact that dental radiographs are routine practice and make it possible to examine the bone structure of maxillae and mandibles, they have been proposed as primary tools for osteoporosis diagnosis. Objective: Examine the viability of and progress in the use of periapical and panoramic radiographs as early predictors of osteoporosis. Main remarks: A review was conducted about the combined use of panoramic and periapical radiographs. Both are machine learning techniques and morphometric indices. General considerations: Panoramic and periapical radiographs may be useful for early prediction of osteoporosis. To achieve this end, dentists should have broad experience interpreting radiographic images or be specialists in oral radiology or maxillofacial surgery. On the other hand, computer tools based on machine learning are available which have obtained results in osteoporosis identification comparable to those obtained by radiologists. Those tools may support the work of less experienced professionals. Dentists should be the first to detect anomalous bone density changes, timely referring patients suspected of osteoporosis to the corresponding specialist(AU)

ABSTRACT

Background: Evaluation of the degree of carpal collapse using radiographic wrist indices is important in the management of wrist diseases. These indices vary in different population groups, hence, the need for population-specific normal references. This study aimed at assessing the carpal height ratio using wrist radiographs of adult Nigerian patients.Materials and Methods: This retrospective study assessed wrist radiographs stored in the Radiology department of Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara, Nigeria, following institutional approval. Apparently normal unpaired wrist radiographs of 135 adults (54 males and 81 females) were used to assess the 3rd metacarpal length, carpal height and capitate length which were used to calculate the carpal height ratio (CHR) and revised carpal height ratio (CHRr). Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 was used to analyze these quantitative variables. Independent t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to probe for differences in gender groups and 10 years' age-groups respectively. Significance was considered at p<0.05. Results: The mean carpal height, capitate length and length of the 3rd metacarpal was 31.77 mm, 23.34 mm and 67.34 mm respectively. The mean CHR and CHRr was 0.47±0.04 and 1.36±0.07 correspondingly. All variables except CHRr were significantly larger in males than in females (p<0.05). All the parameters had no significant association with the age-groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: The CHR and CHRr in this study were lower than reports from other population groups. This study provides a reference database for our studied population to aid in accurate diagnosis and effective management of carpal collapse.

ABSTRACT

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a rare disorder, presenting with multiple contractures and limb deformities.Various theories have been proposed for the development of this congenital anomaly. The final diagnosis is made based upon the clinical signs and imaging findings. This case report aims to outline the imaging features that can help radiologists to make the diagnosis of AMC through radiographs and skeletal survey. Since, very few cases have been reported in literature, no specific treatment protocols have been outlined. Therefore, antenatal diagnosis based on characteristic imaging findings is crucial for early termination and parental counselling.

@#<p><strong>Background:</strong> Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to be a pandemic to this time, and chest radiography has been used as a first-line triage tool, due to long turnaround times for real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which remains to be the gold standard in COVID-19 diagnosis. Chest x-ray alone has poor sensitivity to diagnosing COVID-19 and pediatric studies on this are scarce.</p><p><strong>Objectives:</strong> The main objective is to evaluate the usefulness of a routine chest radiograph as an adjunct to diagnosing suspected pediatric COVID-19, along with its sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and correlation with the most common pediatric signs and symptoms. In line with this, the radiographic characteristics seen in pediatric COVID-19 patients are presented.</p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> A cross-sectional study involving a retrospective chart review of 259 pediatric patients admitted in a tertiary hospital with COVID-19 signs and symptoms, with baseline chest x-ray and SARS-CoV2 RT-PCR tests. Correlation of signs and symptoms with chest x-ray findings to RT-PCR positivity was determined using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> The study was composed of 259 pediatric patients (ages 0-18 years old). Of these, 35 had positive findings with RT-PCR (15%). Sensitivity of a chest radiograph with pneumonia is at 62.9%, while specificity is at 39.3%. Overall accuracy of CXR findings leading to RT-PCR positivity is at 42.5%. Ground glass or hazy opacities was the most common radiographic finding (45.5%), followed by reticular opacities (31.8%). Abnormalities were mostly distributed in the inner lung zone distribution with bilateral lung involvement (90%). Those with difficulty of breathing were more likely to have pneumonia on their CXR, though a finding of pneumonia on CXR did not significantly correlate to a positive RT-PCR.</p><p><strong>Conclusions & Recommendations:</strong> Findings of pneumonia on a pediatric CXR may not necessarily lead to a positive SARS-CoV2 RT-PCR, but correlating this with the patient's clinical course and symptoms may be beneficial in effective triaging of patients. Reassessment by another radiologist may provide additional strength to this study.</p>

@#<b>Objective</b> To solve the problem of fast locating primary radiation in dental panoramic tomography apparatus by designing a linear model-based positioning die body. <b>Methods</b> By applying the mathematical principle of solving the linear equation,the two-dimensional plane coordinates were mapped to the detector plane of dental panoramic tomography apparatus, and the horizontal coordinate position was determined by determining the vertical coordinate value through X-ray imaging in the detector plane. Finally, the position of primary radiation in the detector plane was determined. <b>Results</b> The longitudinal characteristics of the image were determined by analyzing the images taken after the application of the model, and the final position of the primary radiation in the detector plane was accurate. By comparing the detection results of die body method and film method, the localization results by the die body method fell within 90% of the image center by the film method. There was no significant difference in the localization results between the two methods by Shapiro-Wilk normality test and paired-samples <i>t</i> test (<i>P</i> > 0.05). <b>Conclusion</b> For narrow-beam devices, the positioning die body designed based on the linear model method can locate the position of the primary radiation in the detector plane quickly and effectively and replace the film method.

ABSTRACT@#Dental anomalies may occur due to the complex interactions among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors during dental development. The current study aimed to determine the prevalence and gender significance of developmental dental anomalies (DDA) in dental patients. This was a cross-sectional study of 260 subjects (123 males and 137 females) with an age range of 6–35 years old. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed to determine the prevalence of anomalies in tooth number, shape, size, position, and structure. Descriptive statistics was performed, the chi-square test was used for analysis and p-value was set at 0.05. The findings showed that 203 subjects (78.1%) had DDA, which included 86 males (33.1%) and 117 females (45%). A significant gender difference was found regarding the prevalence of two anomalies (p < 0.05). The most prevalent anomaly was displacement 51.2%, followed by dilaceration 24.2%. A significant gender difference (p < 0.05) was found regarding hypodontia 16.5% and impaction 14.6%, with more predominant in females. Some anomalies were not observed such as microdontia, dentin dysplasia, ectopic eruption, gemination, and taurodontism. The study concluded that displacement and dilacerations were the common abnormalities. These findings may lead to various dental complications. Therefore, early diagnosis and follow-up observation are required to reduce the potential dental problems. In addition, it is helpful to increase the knowledge of practitioners with regards to DDA and its occurrence. Furthermore, it is good to highlight the importance of early diagnosis of DDA, especially in the mixed dentition, which can lead to reducing the complication of an orthodontic treatment plan.

@#Introduction: Rotator cuff pathology is commonly attributed to acromion morphology that is demonstrable in standard AP shoulder radiographs by measuring the critical shoulder angle (CSA), the lateral acromial angle (LAA), and the acromial index (AI). However, these parameters vary among races and countries. Therefore, our study aimed to get the local data on acromion morphology in patients with rotator cuff disease. Materials and methods: MRI shoulder reports between January 2012 and June 2018 were reviewed. The study group consisted of 47 patients with rotator cuff injury with a partial or complete tear, and a control group of 37 patients with tendinitis or osteoarthritis and intact rotator cuffs. The CSA, LAA, and AI of both groups were measured on the anteroposterior shoulder radiograph. The risk factors for both groups and the acromion morphology were recorded. Results: The CSA for the rotator cuff tear and the control group was 39.08° and 38.28°, LAA was 72.57 ° and 73.51°, and AI was 0.79 and 0.75. The acromion morphology differed in terms of gender, and only LAA was different among the different ethnic groups. There was a negative correlation between age and CSA, age and AI, LAA and CSA, LAA and AI, but a positive correlation between AI and CSA. Conclusion: The CSA for rotator cuff tear patients in our population was 39.08°, LAA was 72.57°, and AI was 0.79. The acromion morphology was significantly influenced by age and gender.

@#Introduction: Plain anteroposterior radiograph of the hip plays an important role in diagnosing hip pathology. However, one of the most common mistakes is image distortion because the hip is externally rotated due to natural femoral neck anteversion. Thus, the lower extremities should be internally rotated by 15°–20°. The researchers developed a hip internal rotation assistive device and compared it with conventional radiograph positioning. Materials and methods: A hip internal rotation assistive device was designed. This study consisted of 20 volunteers without clinical hip pathology. The volunteers were informed to do a hip radiograph twice to compare the efficacy of the developed device with a conventional positioning. The thickness of the lesser trochanter (TLT) was measured and interpreted by an orthopedist and a radiologist. Statistical significance and inter- and intra-observer reliabilities were analysed. Results: According to the orthopaedist’s measurement, the mean TLT distance was 4.42 + 3.2mm and 4.97 + 3.16mm for the conventional technique and assistive device, respectively, without statistical significance between both groups (p = 0.05). Consistent with the musculoskeletal radiologist, the mean TLT distance was 4.00 + 2.06mm for the conventional technique and 3.92 + 2.27mm for the assistive device, without statistical significance between both groups (p = 0.56). Intra-observer reliability was 0.900 and 0.898 for the orthopaedist and the radiologist, respectively. Interobserver reliability of the assistive device and conventional technique were 0.800 and 0.588, respectively. Conclusion: The efficacy of the developed device was similar to that of the conventional technique. Inter/intra-observer reliabilities were at a good agreement level in both methods. The developed device would also be useful in clinical applications, especially in decreasing unnecessary radiation exposure of medical personnel.

@#Objectives: To recognize the radiographic patterns of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Malaysia. Materials and Methods: Chest radiographs of patients confirmed with COVID-19 in Hospital Tawau, Sabah, Malaysia were retrospectively analyzed by two radiologists. The radiographic pattern, distribution among subgroups and evolution of the disease over time were determined. Results: Among the 82 patients studied, 65 (79.3%) were males. Mean age of our cohorts was 37 ± 15 years. Baseline chest radiographs were abnormal in 37 patients (45.1%). Over half (52.9%) of the symptomatic patients had abnormal baseline radiograph. Among the children, patients with comorbidities, and patients 60 years of age and above, the abnormal radiographs were 14.3%, 71.4% and 69.3% respectively. Ground glass opacities were the commonest abnormal radiographic feature (35.4%), were peripherally located (35.4%) with predilection for the lower zones (29.3%). Most radiographic abnormalities were multifocal (20.7%) and frequently located in the left lung (19.5%). Radiographic recovery was observed in 15 of 18 patients (83%). Computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated greater extent of the disease than observed in radiographs of the same patient. Conclusions: COVID-19 pneumonia presented with a specific radiographic pattern in our cohort of patients, comprising of ground glass opacities in peripheral and basilar distribution, affecting a single lung field and was observed in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Chest radiograph is a useful adjunct screening tool, and in combination with clinical and epidemiological assessment may facilitate in early diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia.

INTRODUCTION@#It is vital to diagnose and treat pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) early, in the interests of the patient and public health. At the Singapore Tuberculosis Control Unit (TBCU), it was not uncommon to discover abnormal chest radiographs (CXRs) predating their PTB diagnosis by months to years in the electronic medical records (EMRs) of sputum acid-fast bacilli smear-positive patients. Our study explored this observation.@*METHODS@#The EMRs of sputum smear-positive PTB patients treated at the TBCU from January to July 2014 were viewed for abnormal CXRs preceding their PTB diagnosis. Information in the EMRs pertaining to the indication for the CXRs, radiological reports (including whether the possibility of PTB was stated) and action taken was captured.@*RESULTS@#Of the 254 sputum smear-positive patients, 108 had previous CXRs in their EMRs, of whom 39 (36.1%) had previous CXRs compatible with PTB. Most of these were performed in tertiary institutions and for reasons unrelated to PTB. No action was taken in response to these CXRs in 24 (61.5%) patients. 27 (69.2%) patients had abnormal CXRs dating back more than six months, with 12 (30.8%) dating back more than 30 months before the PTB diagnosis. Patients aged ≥ 55 years were significantly more likely to have previous CXRs that were compatible with PTB.@*CONCLUSION@#PTB patients may be asymptomatic or have chronic indolent disease and remain undiagnosed for years. There is a need for vigilance within our healthcare system to seize opportunities for early diagnosis and treatment to prevent the spread of this infectious disease in Singapore.

Background@#Gender identification by using skeletal identification is an important tool in forensic, medico-legal, bioarkeology, and anthropology. Traditional morphological methods depended on the anthropologist subjectivity that caused a significant difference among the observer. This study aims to develop the discriminant function for gender prediction in a Surabaya-Indonesia population age ranges 15-25-year-olds by using a panoramic radiograph. This research used 273 panoramic radiographs consisted of 129 male panoramic radiographs and 144 female panoramic radiographs. The researchers measured 11 parameters of the jaw such as two gonial angles, two mandibular ramus heights, two mandibular ramus widths, two mandibular corpus lengths, two nasal line maxilla, and anterior mandibular corpus heights. The researchers analyzed the data by using the discriminant analysis of the IBM SPSS statistic 24. @*Results@#The result of our study shows there were significant differences in the jaw morphometry between males and females, except the mandibular ramus widths. The jaw size in males was larger than that of the female. The biggest dimorphism variables based on the Wilks lambda value were gonial angles, mandibular ramus heights, mandibular corpus lengths, and nasal lines. While the smallest dimorphism variables were mandibular ramus widths. The accuracy of discriminant analysis for each variable ranges from 47.3% to 93.8%. @*Conclusion@#This preliminary study in Surabaya-Indonesia population age ranges 15-25-year-olds by using panoramic radiograph shows the highest accuracy of gender prediction by using discriminant function was obtained from the combination of the nine jaw parameters.
