ABSTRACT

Objective@#The aim of this study was to explore the effects of 2-hexyl-4-pentylenic acid (HPTA) in combination with radiotherapy (RT) on distant unirradiated breast tumors.@*Methods@#Using a rat model of chemical carcinogen (7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene,DMBA)-induced breast cancer, tumor volume was monitored and treatment response was evaluated by performing HE staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, qRT-PCR, and western blot analyses.@*Results@#The results demonstrated that HPTA in combination with RT significantly delayed the growth of distant, unirradiated breast tumors. The mechanism of action included tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) infiltration into distant tumor tissues, M1 polarization, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis by IFN-γ.@*Conclusion@#The results suggest that the combination of HPTA with RT has an abscopal effect on distant tumors

ABSTRACT

Background: Gynaecological malignancies constitute a major burden of cancer-related morbidity and mortality amongst females in developing countries including India. Aims and objectives: The study was conducted to study the clinical and morphological characteristics of patients having gynaecological malignancies and treated by radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy, now under follow-up. Study design: Aretrospective observational study in a tertiary care hospital of government set-up over 2 year period. Observations: A total of 3120 patients who reported for follow-up were included, of which 394 patients were of gynaecological malignancies. Carcinoma (Ca) Cervix followed by Ca endometrium were the most common sites (76% and 16% respectively). The most common age group was 7th decade. 33% patients with locally advanced cervical cancer were found to have paraaortic lymphadenopathy on presentation warranting extended field radiotherapy (RT). 73% of locally advanced ca cervix patients received 5 or more cycles of weekly chemotherapy (CT) with Cisplatin. 68% patients were disease-free at the time of follow-up. 11% patients were referred for palliative chemotherapy. 17% patients required hospitalization for symptomatic care during followup. Conclusion: Concurrent chemoradiation is an acceptable and well-tolerated modality of treatment for locally advanced gynaecological malignancies. Multimodal treatment and good collaboration between allied specialists is recommended.

ABSTRACT

Radiotherapy(RT) is one of the principle treatment options for prostate cancer.Modern RT and surgery show similar progression-free survival in localized prostate cancer.Adjuvant RT compared to observation significantly diminishes the risk of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) progression and local failure for patients at the highest risk for recurrence after radical prostatectomy,including with seminal vesicle invasion,extraprostatic extension,extensive positive margins,and detectable postoperative PSA.Salvage RT is effective at controlling local recurrence and reduces the risk of distant metastasis and prostate cancerspecific mortality (PCSM) for patients with PSA or local recurrence after prostatectomy.Hypofractionated radiotherapy of recent years' reports shows similar cancer control rates without an increased risk of late toxicity in comparison to conventional regimens.The addition of androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) to radiation improves the overall survival and biochemical progression-free survival(bPFS) for intermediate-risk and high-risk patients.
