ABSTRACT

Resumo Águas contaminadas representam um risco à saúde não somente pelo consumo direto, mas também pelo uso recreativo. Estratégias de análise de risco visam à redução dos casos de contaminação e devem incorporar as percepções e aceitação das pessoas em assumir riscos. Um método rápido e simplificado foi desenvolvido para avaliar a probabilidade do uso de águas recreativas. Foram realizadas entrevistas em municípios com condições ecológicas distintas, para elencar fatores que embasam a decisão das pessoas pelo uso dos rios. Em seguida, foi elaborado e realizado pré-teste do Índice de Probabilidade de Uso Recreativo de Águas (I-PURA) que, após ajuste, foi aplicado em 26 balneários de 5 das 9 regiões hidrográficas do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Foram medidas, ainda, a frequência de uso, a contaminação bacteriana da água e um índice de avaliação do habitat (IAH). O I-PURA foi correlacionado à frequência de uso, mas não com o IAH, evidenciando que a percepção dos usuários é diferente de aspectos puramente ecológicos. Este método contribui com a análise de risco e manejo dos recursos hídricos. Locais em que há alta probabilidade de uso, ou uso observado, e alta contaminação são estratégicos para intervenção.


Abstract Contaminated waters constitute health risks not only due to direct consumption, but also in recreational use. Risk analysis strategies aim to reduce the instances of contaminations and must include the population's perceptions and willingness to assume risks. A rapid and simple method was developed to evaluate the probability of use of recreational waters. Interviews were conducted in municipalities with different ecological conditions, in order to define the factors used by people to decide to use, or otherwise, river waters. After analyzing the results, the "Índice de Probabilidade de Uso Recreativo de Águas (I-PURA)" was elaborated and tested. The index was then employed at 26 river locations representing five of the nine hydrographic regions of Rio de Janeiro state. The frequency of use, water contamination and a Habitat Assessment Visual Index (IAH) was also measured. The I-PURA was correlated with the frequency of use. Furthermore, the I-PURA was not correlated with IAH, showing that user perceptions are different from purely ecological aspects. This tool offers useful information for risk assessment and environmental management. Sites with a high probability of use, or observed use, that are highly contaminated should be prioritized for interventions.

BACKGROUND: Water – related diseases are worldwide health concern. Microbial contamination and contaminant products in water are a source of disease outbreaks and development of cumulative toxic effects. Ensuring safe water is one of the goals to be achieved at the global level. The aim of this study was to assess publications on drinking and recreational water from a health point of view to understand current problems and future research trends in this field. METHODS: Scopus, the largest scientific electronic database, was used to retrieve related articles and present the results as bibliometric tables and maps. Search query was modified manually using related terms to maximize accuracy. RESULTS: A total of 2267 publications were retrieved with an average of 16.82 citations per article. The h-index of retrieved articles was 88. Visual mapping showed that E. coli, diarrhea, cryptosporidiosis, fluoride, arsenic, cancer, chlorine, trihalomethane, and H. pylori were most frequently encountered terms in title and abstract of retrieved articles. The number of articles on water microbiology was a significant (P < 0.01) predictor of worldwide productivity of water – related disease publications. Journal of Water and Health ranked first in number of publications with 136 (6.00 %) articles. The United States of America ranked first in productivity with a total of 623 (27.48 %) articles. Germany (15.44 %), India (16.00 %) and China (20.66 %) had the least international collaboration in water-related disease research. Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Prevention and Control were among top ten productive institutions. In the top ten cited articles, there were three articles about arsenic, one about aluminum, one about trihalomethane, one about nitrate, one about toxoplasmosis, one about gastroenteritis, and the remaining two articles were general ones. CONCLUSIONS: There was a linear increase in the number of publications on water – related diseases in the last decade. Arsenic, in drinking water is a serious concern. Cryptosporidiosis and other infectious gastroenteritis remain a major health risk of exposure to contaminated water. Increased number of publications from Asian countries was not associated with a high percentage of international collaboration.

ABSTRACT

Recreational water quality is commonly assessed by microbial indicators such as fecal coliforms. Maceió is the capital of Alagoas state, located in tropical northeastern Brazil. Its beaches are considered as the most beautiful urban beaches in the country. Jatiúca Beach in Maceió was found to be unsuitable for bathing continuously during the year of 2011. The same level of contamination was not observed in surrounding beaches. The aim of this study was to initiate the search for the sources of these high coliform levels, so that contamination can be eventually mitigated. We performed a retrospective analysis of historical results of fecal coliform concentrations from 2006 to 2012 at five monitoring stations located in the study region. Results showed that Jatiúca Beach consistently presented the worst quality among the studied beaches. A field survey was conducted to identify existing point and non-point sources of pollution in the area. Monitoring in the vicinity of Jatiúca was spatially intensified. Fecal coliform concentrations were categorized according to tide range and tide stage. A storm drain located in northern Jatiúca was identified as the main point source of the contamination. However, fecal coliform concentrations at Jatiúca were high during high tides and spring tides even when this point source was inactive (no rainfall). We hypothesize that high fecal coliform levels in Jatiúca Beach may also be caused by aquifer contamination or, more likely, from tide washing of contaminated sand. Both of these hypotheses will be further investigated.

La contaminación microbiológica de aguas recreativas es un problema preocupante, ya que las personas que las utilizan pueden contraer enfermedades que podrían afectar su bienestar general. Para evaluar la calidad del agua, las legislaciones existentes solo establecen límites de indicadores bacterianos, los cuales no predicen con exactitud la presencia de parásitos. Además, la cantidad de parásitos presentes en el agua, aunque suficiente para producir enfermedad, suele ser pequeña, por lo que, se necesita una etapa previa de concentración para poder detectarlos. En este trabajo se monitorearon trimestralmente durante un año tres ambientes acuáticos de usos recreativos de la provincia de Salta, realizando la concentración de las muestras y la posterior preparación para la búsqueda de elementos parasitarios por microscopía. Adicionalmente, en cada ambiente se midieron mensualmente variables fisicoquímicas in situ y variables bacteriológicas por técnicas microbiológicas tradicionales. En cada ambiente se encontraron como mínimo 9 de los 14 parásitos detectados en conjunto. La presencia de los elementos parasitarios no presentó correlación con indicadores bacterianos en ningún ambiente ni en ninguna de las estaciones (p > 0,05). Mientras que en invierno la contaminación bacteriológica disminuyó entre un 76 % y un 99 %, los elementos parasitarios no presentaron disminución estacional. Los resultados permiten sugerir al género Entamoeba como indicador anual de contaminación parasitaria, ya que este fue encontrado en todos los ambientes con mínimas variaciones estacionales. Estos resultados poseen relevancia epidemiológica, dado que permitirán a los tomadores de decisiones proponer medidas para mejorar el bienestar de la población.


Microbiological pollution of recreational waters is a major problem for public health as it may transmit waterborne diseases. To assess water quality, current legislation only requires limits for bacterial indicators; however, these organisms do not accurately predict the presence of parasites. Small number of parasites is usually present in water and although they are capable of causing disease, they may not be high enough to be detected. Detection therefore requires water samples to be concentrated. In this work three recreational aquatic environments located in the province of Salta were monitored over one year. For parasite quantification, water samples were collected every three months and concentrated by ultrafiltration. Detection was performed by microscopy. In addition, monthly monitoring was carried out in each aquatic environment: physicochemical variables were measured in situ and bacteriological counts were determined by traditional microbiological techniques. Of 14 parasites identified, at least nine were detected in each aquatic environment sampled. While bacteriological contamination decreased in most cases during winter (76-99%), parasites were present year-round, becoming a continual threat to public health. Thus, we here propose that it is necessary to use specific parasitological indicators to prevent waterborne disease transmission. Our results suggest that Entamoeba would be a suitable indicator as it was found in all environments and showed minimal seasonal variation. The results obtained in this study have epidemiological relevance and will allow decision-makers to propose solutions for water protection in order to care for population health.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrences of the group A rotavirus (RVA), norovirus (NoV) and human adenovirus (HAdV) in the surface waters of an urban lagoon (Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon) in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During one year of surveillance, water samples were obtained from the lagoon and other interconnected ecosystems (river and beach). The samples were concentrated using an adsorption-elution method with a negatively charged membrane and tested by qualitative and quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays. RVA was the most prevalent virus detected (24.3%) with a viral load ranging from 3.0 x 10¹-5.6 x 10(4) genome copies/L, followed by NoV (18.8%) and HAdV (16.7%). Considering water samples suitable for bathing, according to Escherichia coli criterion (< 2,000 most probable number/100 mL), viruses were detected in 50% (57/114) of them. Physicochemical parameters were also measured and showed possible correlations between turbidity and RVA presence and between pH and NoV presence. These data demonstrate the importance of considering viral parameters to ensure water quality and the utilisation of these parameters as additional tools for the characterisation of environmental contamination.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the efficiency of two bioindicators, fecal coliforms and ecotoxicity tests, set out in CONAMA Resolution 274/00 and CONAMA Resolution 357/05, in assessment of water quality. For this study, Lake Paranoá, Federal District of Brazil, was chosen, since it is a water body directly contaminated by effluents from a sewage treatment plant. Four sampling points were chosen in accordance with the map of recreational water quality published weekly by CAESB/DF, after analysis of fecal coliforms. Samples from these points were collected for 6 months and tested on Danio rerio fish (acute toxicity) and on the microcrustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia (acute and chronic toxicity), besides measuring chemical and physico-chemical parameters. The data obtained show great consistency between the observed biological parameters, suggesting that in this urban aquatic environment, under great anthropogenic pressure, the fecal coliform bioindicator seems to be more restrictive and enough to evaluate the safety of surface water.


Este trabalho comparou a eficiência dos bioindicadores coliformes fecais ou termotolerantes e ensaios de ecotoxicidade, propostos pelas Resoluções Conama 274/00 e Conama 357/05, na avaliação da qualidade de água. Para a realização desse estudo foi escolhido o Lago Paranoá, Brasília, Distrito Federal, por ser um corpo hídrico impactado diretamente pelo lançamento de efluentes de uma estação de tratamento de esgotos. Foram definidos quatro pontos de acordo com o mapa de balneabilidade, publicado semanalmente pela Caesb/DF, em função do teor de coliformes termotolerantes. Amostras desses pontos colhidas durante seis meses foram testadas com o peixe Danio rerio (toxicidade aguda) e o com o microcrustáceo Ceriodaphnia dubia (toxicidade aguda e crônica), além da determinação de parâmetros químicos e físico-químicos. Os resultados obtidos mostraram grande equivalência entre os parâmetros biológicos observados, sugerindo que nesse ambiente sob grande influência antrópica, o bioindicador coliformes termotolerantes foi mais restritivo e suficiente para avaliar a segurança das águas superficiais.

Se determinó la presencia de amibas de vida libre, y la calidad microbiológica de las aguas para la recreación del parque “Las Cocuizas” en Maracay, Venezuela, en 30 muestras de agua captadas en diferentes lugares dentro del parque. Se investigó la presencia de amibas de vida libre y otros parásitos mediante exámenes directo y por coloración. También se determinaron los recuentos de aerobios mesófilos, coliformes totales y fecales. Se observó la presencia de formas parasitarias en 15 del total de las 30 muestras; en 8 se visualizaron formas compatibles con Naegleria fowleri y en las 7 restantes otros parásitos. Del total de las muestras 37,0 % reveló un número más probable de coliformes fecales superior a 200/100 mL-1 y 33,3 % mostró contaminación fecal activa con Escherichia coli. Se evidenció que existe riesgo de contaminación por diversos microorganismos patógenos transmitidos por el agua y esto puede ser peligroso para los usuarios del parque.


The objective of this study was to determine the presence of free-living amoebae and the microbiological quality of the recreational waters of Cocuizas Park in Maracay, Venezuela. Thirty samples taken from different park sites were analyzed. The presence of free-living amoebae and other parasitic was detected by fresh mounts and specific parasitic stain slides. Mesophilic aerobic bacteria and total faecal Coliforms were also determined. Parasitic forms were observed in 15 of the 30 samples that were analyzed. Forms compatible with Naegleria fowleri were seen in eight of the samples; other parasites were observed in the remaining seven samples. 37% of the samples revealed faecal coliforms above 200/100 mL-1 and 33,3% showed an active Escherichia coli faecal contamination. These results show risk of human infection by several water-borne pathogenic microorganisms, which could be dangerous for users of the park.
