ABSTRACT

Apheresis platelets are extensively utilized in clinical practice due to high purity and minimal side effects. These platelets are primarily obtained from regular blood donors. However, there is no consensus on whether plateletpheresis leads to iron deficiency among blood donors. In recent years, increasing attention has been given to the impact of plateletpheresis on the iron nutritional status of these donors. Numerous studies have indicated a prevalence of iron deficiency among plateletpheresis donors. The process of plateletpheresis involves the loss of red blood cells, which can accumulate over time and disrupt iron metabolism, ultimately resulting in iron deficiency anemia. This condition not only affects the physical well-being of the donors but also leads to a decline in their willingness to donate blood. Blood collection and supply institutions should enhance their focus on the iron nutritional status of plateletpheresis donors and implement various measures, such as intensifying health education regarding the significance of iron supplementation, implementing programs for testing iron deficiency, considering the provision of iron supplements and extending blood donation intervals. It is crucial to prevent iron deficiency in plateletpheresis donors. These institutions should explore calculation models that can predict personalized blood donation intervals and iron supplementation strategies, and seek a balanced approach that is optimal for maintaining adequate collections while safeguarding donor health. The article comprehensively reviews literature at home and abroad on the etiology and hazards of iron deficiency in plateletpheresis donors, as well as detection methods and response measures. It serves as a foundation for developing scientific and reasonable care measures for blood donation, while also achieving personalized and scientific management and recruitment strategies for blood donors.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To explore the causes of apheresis platelet donors lapsing in Huzhou area, so as to provide basis for better maintenance of blood donor team. 【Methods】 The data of 1 128 platelet donors from November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2021 were collected, and they were divided into regular blood donor group and lapsed blood donor group, and their work situation, social relations and donation process were investigated through questionnaire survey.Based on the basic characteristics of blood donors, 15 variables were set and analyzed by t test, chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis using SPSS 23.0 software. 【Results】 There were 602 (53.37%, 602/1 128) regular blood donors and 526 (46.63%, 526/1 128) lapsed blood donors in the donor bank during recent 3 years. No significant differences were found in age, gender, educational background, blood donation reaction as well as the satisfaction to service attitude and technical level of blood station staff between the two groups (P>0.05), but significant difference was noticed in whether they were freelancers or changed jobs recently, the working hours per week (h), whether they had friends who donated platelets, had relatives who received/had a serious disease, had children or not, whether satisfied with the frequency of recruitment, and whether the donation was convenient (P<0.05, P<0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that recruitment frequency (OR=2.679), convenience of blood donation (OR=2.486), having friends who donated blood (OR=1.791), the working hours per week (OR=1.011), changing jobs (OR=0.558) and having children (OR=0.465) were included in the final regression model and were the influencing factors of blood donor lapsing(P<0.01). 【Conclusion】 Platelet donor lapsing is prominent in Huzhou, therefore efficient communication approaches should be established between blood stations, between blood donors and blood donor, and between blood banks; personalized service should be adopted to maintain apheresis platelet donors.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To analyze the related factors affecting first-time platelet donors to become regular donors in Guangzhou in 2018, so as to provide reference for the retention of platelet donors. 【Methods】 The data of 4 361 first-time platelet donors in Guangzhou in 2018, including age, gender, initial donation unit, time for the primary and secondary donation were collected. The relevant factors affecting first-time blood donors to become regular donors were analyzed by Logistic regression analysis. 【Results】 Among the influencing factors, first-time donors returned in the first month were more likely to become regular donors (5.569 times that of those did not return)(OR 95% CI: 4.748~6.533, P<0.05). First-time donors who aged 45~60, and initially donated 2 units were more likely to become regular donors than those aged 18~24(1.857 times) (OR 95% CI: 1.413~2.441, P<0.05), and those initially donated only one unit (1.695 time) (OR 95% CI: 1.486~1.933, P<0.05). 【Conclusion】 The returning in the first month, age and initial donation units predict long-term commitment for first-time donors. Encouraging first-time platelet donors to return within 1 month is more likely to convert them into regular blood donors.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To study the effect of regular blood donation on the serum iron (SI) and serum ferritin (SF) of regular blood donors. 【Methods】 A total of 240 blood samples (4~5 mL per person, with EDTA-2K anticoagulant) from regular voluntary blood donors in our center from January to June 2019 were randomly selected as the study group. Another 200 healthy subjects without blood donation history were randomly selected as the control group. SI was measured by Ferene method, SF by chemiluminescence method, and blood routine indexes by automatic hematology analyzer. 【Results】 The Hb, RBC count, HCT and other blood routine indexes of the study group and the control group were all in the normal range. SI (mol/L) in the study gourp and the control group was 17.13±4.36 vs 17.82±5.78(P>0.05), and SF (ng/mL) was 98.34±52.74 vs 147.52±91.52 (P<0.05). 【Conclusion】 SI and SF may decrease due to regular blood donation, which deserve close follow-up to ensure the safety of regular blood donors.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To study and analyze the basic characteristics of blood donors under the COVID-19 epidemic in Tianjin area, so as to provide data support for improving the blood collection for emergency incidents. 【Methods】 The blood collection data of Tianjin Blood Center under the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020 were collected in terms of the number of blood donations, changes in blood donation units over time, group blood donation, donations given by regular blood donors and donations inside fixed blood donation sites, registered residence, gender, age, education, occupation, individual donation, group donation, and the annual daily blood collection and delivery data in Tianjin. 【Results】 The number of blood donations and donation units in Feb 2020 decreased by 56.96%(3 226/7 496-1)and 62.40%(5 382/14 314.5-1)compared with the same period in 2019, and decreased by 56.87%(3 226/7 480-1)and 60.70%(5 382/13 695.7-1)compared with the average value in the previous five years. The number of blood donations, donation units and rate of 400 mL donation in 2020 decreased by 13.25%(119 107/137 293-1), 17.7%(205 196.5/249 405-1)and 12.83%(66.0/75.8-1)respectively. Meanwhile the units of group donation increased by 22.59%(44 118.5/35 989.0-1)as compared with those in 2019. The proportion of regular blood donors raised up to 17.31%(20 623/119 107, which was the highest in recent 6 years. During the epidemic period, the number of blood donations of local registered residence, women, over 36 years old, with bachelor and above degree increased by varied extent compared with previous years. Workers, staff members and others were the main groups of voluntary blood donation, and civil servant, medical workers, farmers and teachers also played a certain role during the epidemic. 【Conclusion】 The clinical blood use in Tianjin was basically guaranteed during the COVID-19 epidemic. It is suggested to further optimize the structure of voluntary blood donors, establish a diversified and multi-level group blood donation team, and increase the number of regular blood donors.
