ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Food security can be defined as the availability of and accessibility to food, acquired in an acceptable means at any given time and place in a way that could maintain health and wellbeing. One critical dimension of food security is continued access to adequate food. To measure this dimension, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) developed the latest measurement tool, namely the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), the first instrument to measure people who experience food insecurity globally. This study aimed to validate the construct validity and reliability of the Malay version of FIES (M-FIES) for Malaysians. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 145 households in Kuantan, Pahang. Rasch analysis was used to analyse the construct validity of FIES. Results: FIES met the Rasch model assumptions with all items having an infit value of between 0.7- 1.3 and an outfit value of <2.0. The item and person reliability were 0.97 and 0.71, respectively; while the item and person separation were 5.59 and 1.58, respectively. The FIES item severity indicated that the items “few food”, “healthy”, “skipped”, “ate less”, and “runout” were disordered. Conclusion: The M-FIES is a valid and reliable measurement tool for the food insecurity situation among households based on its construct validity assessed using the Rasch model. Furthermore, the severity of item in M-FIES was different in terms of order from the original FIES, suggesting that the same items may be interpreted differently due to cultural or societal differences.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective Use of the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) has increased significantly since its publication. Although the validity of the SCARED is well established, most of the samples investigated primarily comprised Caucasian children and, where available, people from Asian cultures such as China. Furthermore, the instrument's utility for screening use in community samples has yet to be validated, although it is commonly advocated for this use. The present study addressed the psychometric properties of the SCARED in a community sample of Malaysian children and adolescents. Method A total of 386 participants from an urban area, aged between 8 and 17, completed the 41-item SCARED. Confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis were performed to investigate the factor structure of the SCARED. Results Internal consistency ratings for the SCARED's total and subscale scores were good, except for School Avoidance. The validity of the SCARED was further demonstrated through a significant correlation with the Internalizing subscale of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). In contrast with the five-factor structure proposed for primarily Caucasian samples, factor analysis revealed a four-factor structure for this Malaysian sample. Conclusions These research findings support the validity of the SCARED and its utility as a screening tool in a community sample of Malaysian children and adolescents.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Dissatisfaction towards the quality of foodservice can affect several important aspects such as nutritional intake and financial burden. The effect of dissatisfaction towards nutritional aspect can be observed via a decline in dietary intake. Therefore, reliable and valid questionnaires are important to measure patients’ satisfaction with hospital foodservice. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the construct validity and reliability of a developed questionnaire in a local setting. Methods: A questionnaire adapted from previous studies and consisting of 27 statements from four dimensions, was administered to a total of 277 hospitalised patients in a government hospital. Factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted using SPSS version 25. Results: Principal component of factor analysis revealed that the final questionnaire contained four main foodservice dimensions, namely food properties, staff and meal service reliability, customisation, and physical and social aspects. The reliability analysis revealed that the Cronbach’s alpha value ranged from 0.55 to 0.84 for these foodservice dimensions. The analysis showed that the alpha value differed from one dimension to another such as food properties (α=0.84), staff and meal service reliability (α=0.67), customisation (α=0.69) and physical and social aspects (α=0.55). Conclusion: Twenty-seven questionnaire items were retained because their factor loadings were greater than 0.35. Therefore, the questionnaire on patients’ satisfaction towards hospital foodservice was considered reliable and valid. The classification of the four dimensions provided detailed information of the satisfaction level, relationship and influence on the foodservice dimensions, which contributed to satisfaction towards hospital foodservice.

ABSTRACT

[Objective]In recent years, communication skills have been recognized as an essential competence for acupuncturists. This study proposes to develop a scale for measuring the medical communication skills of acupuncturists.
[Materials and Methods]A questionnaire of 20 items was used to measure medical communication skills. These items were adopted from a concept analysis conducted in a previous study.
Cronbach's alpha was used to examine the scale's reliability. The scale's validity was examined by correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis comparisons with normal communication skills subscale scores (ENDCOREs, Encode, Decode, Control, Regulate) and a Japanese version of characteristic trait anxiety scores (STAI, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory).
[Results]Factor analysis, using a principal extraction method and promax rotation, was conducted on responses from 443students and therapists. As a result, the original 20 items were reduced to 16, and the following three factors were extracted:I. Acceptance of patients and self-control;II. Appropriate explanation to patients;and III. Understanding of patient's feelings. These three factors had high degrees of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha =.872 -.892).
The scores of the three factors correlated significantly with the scores of the six factors of ENDCORE, and with the anxiety scores. Although the results of multiple regression analysis showed that each factor of ENDCORE explained the three factors, the anxiety scores did not influence medical communication skills. The scores for the three factors correlated significantly with self-evaluation scores of medical interview skill. In addition, these three factors were affected by the degree of clinical experience.
[Conclusion]These results suggest that this scale may be a reliable instrument for assessing medical communication skills among Japanese acupuncturists.

ABSTRACT

We developed a Korean translation of the Internet Addiction Test (KIAT), widely used self-report for internet addiction and tested its reliability and validity in a sample of college students. Two hundred seventy-nine college students at a national university completed the KIAT. Internal consistency and two week test-retest reliability were calculated from the data, and principal component factor analysis was conducted. Participants also completed the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ), the Korea Internet addiction scale (K-scale), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for the criterion validity. Cronbach's alpha of the whole scale was 0.91, and test-retest reliability was also good (r = 0.73). The IADQ, the K-scale, and depressive symptoms were significantly correlated with the KIAT scores, demonstrating concurrent and convergent validity. The factor analysis extracted four factors (Excessive use, Dependence, Withdrawal, and Avoidance of reality) that accounted for 59% of total variance. The KIAT has outstanding internal consistency and high test-retest reliability. Also, the factor structure and validity data show that the KIAT is comparable to the original version. Thus, the KIAT is a psychometrically sound tool for assessing internet addiction in the Korean-speaking population.

ABSTRACT

Background: The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) is a short subjective questionnaire which helps physicians in making decisions about patients suffering from insomnia. The present study was an attempt to test the reliability and validity of the Iranian version of the ISI and to measure the correlation between ISI items and polysomnography results in chronic insomnia patients. Methods: Two groups responded to the Persian translation of four questionnaires; ISI, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). The first group consisted of 135 patients diagnosed with chronic insomnia, and the second group was comprised of 55 normal people. After completing the questionnaires, the insomniac patients underwent standard overnight polysomnography. Results: The internal consistency demonstrated by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was above 0.8 for both groups. The Intra-class correlation coefficient was above 0.7 after two weeks for both groups. The correlations between ISI, PSQI, ESS, and GHQ were high. In addition, close correlations were found between scores obtained from the ISI questionnaire items in insomniac patients with corresponding polysomnographic variables. Conclusion: The Iranian version of the ISI is a reliable and valid instrument. It is a valuable short and first-line questionnaire for insomnia research and clinical work.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) is a short, structured diagnostic interview compatible with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV). It was designed for clinical practice, research in psychiatric, primary care settings and epidemiological surveys. This preliminary study aims to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Malaysian Version of MINI for Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder symptoms criteria only. Methods: Six hours of MINI training was given as part of a National Health Morbidity Survey training program for layman interviewers (n=229) and three videos were prepared by an expert psychiatrist for inter-rater reliability purposes. Meanwhile, for validity purposes, the MINI was administered to patients with Major Depressive Disorder (n=30), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (n=20) and to a normal population (n=60), to conform against the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM-IV) that was administered by psychiatrists. Results: Overall the inter-rater reliability was satisfactory (0.67 to 0.85) and the concordance between the MINI’s and expert diagnoses was good, with kappa values of greater than 0.88. Conclusions: The Malay version of the MINI is adjusted to the clinical setting and for the assessment of positive cases in a community setting. Modifications were highlighted to correct any identified problems and to improve the reliability of the MINI for future research and clinical use.

ABSTRACT

@# Objective To explore the reliability and validity of Meadow-Kendall Social-Emotional Assessment Inventory (SEAI) for Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Students Preschool Version in China. Methods 96 hearing-impaired children were assessed with SEAI, and 30 of them were assessed with Conners Teacher Rating Scale (TRS), 30 by another teacher, 30 by the first teacher 2 weeks later. The data were analyzed with Pearson's or Spearman's correlation analysis. Results For sociable communicative behaviors, impulsive dominating behaviors, developmental lags, anxious compulsive behaviors, items related to deafness, test-retest reliability (correlated coefficient, r) was 0.94,0.55, 0.87, 0.31, 0.74; and Cronbach's α was 0.70, 0.76, 0.76, 0.80, 0.68. The inter-rater reliability was 0.90, 0.58, 0.46, 0.14, 0.55. The subscales of SEAI were correlated (r=-0.36~-0.89, P<0.05) with the subscales of TRS. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the subscale model of SEAI was reasonable. Conclusion The SEAI for Deaf and Hearing-impaired Students Preschool Version can be used for Chinese hearing-impaired children.
