ABSTRACT

Context: Maxillary expansion is the mainstay therapy for maxillary transverse deficiency. There has been a constant search for the most effective yet biologically friendly method of maxillary expansion, alternatives being, slow, rapid and semi rapid. Aims: The purpose of this study was to explore the outcome of palatal expansion achieved using a removable plate and low continuous forces brought about by a semi rapid screw activation protocol. Settings and Design: Retrospective study. Methods and Material: Plaster models of 56 consecutive patients treated for maxillary expansion were obtained pre?treatment (T0), post?expansion (T1), and post fixed appliance treatment (T2). The radiographic images of the models were traced using Image J software. Linear and angular measurements were evaluated to measure transverse change. Statistical Analysis Used: Interclass Correlation Coefficient [ICC] and Dahlberg’s formula were used for reliability test. The differences in the mean values between the three duration groups [T0, T1 and T2] were analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). For multiple comparisons, a post hoc Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) test was performed. Results: Significant increase in inter?molar, alveolar and palatal linear widths were observed from T0 to T1 with significant relapses from T1 to T2, with an overall net gain remaining at T2. Similarly, significant increases in all angular measurements were observed from T0 to T1 with significant relapses from T1 to T2 and an overall insignificant change at T2 as compared to T0. Conclusion: The appliance and protocol were effective in producing transverse expansion with minimal molar and alveolar tipping.

ABSTRACT

Vertical facial growth triggers the rotation of mandible to move the chin point to the downward and backward direction, which showed remarkably effective result making the less prominent chin. Recently, the intraoral removable appliance utilizing class III elastic demonstrated the vertical growth trigger mechanism. The treatment change was very fast and wearing was quite easy, compared to extraoral appliances. The purpose of this study was to verify the duration of the treatment on class III malocclusion using intraoral removable appliances, which designed to accelerate vertical facial growth.56 patients were selected with the complaint of the protruded mandible and class III malocclusion (overjet : −3 – 0 mm, overbite : 0 – 4 mm). Information like; age at start, duration of the treatment events, type of the treatment, overjet, overbite etc. was collected and calculated. The average age of the patients delivering the initial brace was 8.75 ± 1.10 year. Most of the anterior crossbite was resolved within 6 months. The total treatment period was 21.79 ± 10.73 months with the additional procedures like the alignment of anterior teeth and torque control using additional removable and fixed orthodontic appliances. The correlation study showed that patient's cooperation (p = 0.000) and the use of fixed appliance (p = 0.032) were significantly influenced on treatment duration.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of Micro-class in orthodontic practicum for five-year undergraduate students in stomotology. Methods Experimental comparative method was used on two groups of undergraduate students. A total of 70 students in Grade 2011 were taught with traditional teaching mode as the control group, while 50 students in Grade 2012 were taught with Micro-class lecture as the observation group. The satisfaction questionnaires were distributed to both groups after the course to facilitate the eval-uation of teaching methods, which specifically was done by SPSS 21.0 for t test and Chi-square test. Results The results of survey showed that the satisfaction of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group, which exemplified in the studying interest inspiration, studying efficiency improvement, further development, and overall satisfaction [(4.00±0.73) vs. (3.05±0.77); (4.06±0.65) vs. (3.06±1.01);(4.86±0.35) vs. (2.64±0.80); (4.32±0.47) vs. (2.62±1.08)], (P<0.01). Conclusion Micro-class can improve the teaching quality, and it is meaningful to apply the micro-class in orthodontic practicum.

ABSTRACT

This case report focused on a patient with supraeruption of the first and second mandibular molars as a result of loss of the first and second maxillary molars for a long time. We adopted a combination of a vacuum-formed removable appliance and elastics to intrude the first and second mandibular molars by using a continuous, light force to acquire sufficient restoration space for maxillary molars. Thus, the dental-implant treatment was successful, and a good and stable occlusal relationship was established.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article was to present an alternative to the treatment of lower lateral incisors with ectopic eruption using a removable appliance with digital springs. The treatment showed the efficacy of this appliance in the clinical case reported - early stage of mixed dentition - avoiding the development of a dental transposition and making the final stages with fixed appliance easier.
