ABSTRACT

The main inclicator of iodine nutritional status of salt for human con-sumption is the urinary concentration of iodine, which is useful in monitoring universal levels in salt. Paraguay has suffered deficiency in salt with highprevalence of goiter in thepopulation reaching48.6%. In 2000, results of the ThyroidMobileproject in Latin America showed a goiter prevalence of 17% but 79.6% of the consumed iodized salt was adequate in paraguayan households (more than 15 ppm of iodine). The average values of iodine urinary concentration in 4487 scholars was 437 µg/L, 30% of the average value was between the ideal of 100 to 199 µg/L and 46.1% were above 300 mg/L, with risk of excess iodine. Urinary concentration of iodine during pregnancy was measure for the first time in Paraguay in 200 women; the average was 484 µg/L but diabetes and hypothyroidism during pregnancy was observe in 50% of them. Objective: Determine iodine concentration in urine of the school population in 17 departments of the country and measure the levels of iodine in urine in 200 pregnant women from 15-37 years of age and their levels of glycaemia, and thyroid TSH. Methods: During the years, 2006 and 2007 were evaluated 4487 school randomized, in a probabilistic sample, 3198 in rural areas and 1,289 in urban areas; casual urine samples was collected to determine iodine content. The urinary concentration of iodine in two hundredpregnant women, concentration of iodine in salt, and levels of glycaemia and TSH were also included in the present study All candidates agreed with the informed consent under the ethics rules. Results: These data showed by comparing the levels of iodine in urine concentration in more than adequate and excessive level but this last was markedly elevated (93.8%). The median level greater than 300 µg/L was observed in 100% of the 4,487 urine samples, while the median urinary iodine levels of300-500 µg/L was 91.3% and above 500 was 9.7%. These levels showed the risk of developing thyroid autoimmune diseases. In 200 pregnancy women the average of urine concentration of iodine was 498 pcg/L, subclinical and clinical hypothyroidism and gestational diabetes was 50% of both. Conclu-sion: To obtain normal median urinary iodine levels is necessary to decrease the amount of iodine in salt. The main recommendation is to insist on adequate monitoring of iodized salt consumption. Also continue surveillance and monitoring in sentinel sites reporting the importance of adequate iodine intake of the population especially in pregnant women that also need to be warm about the diabetes during pregnancy but also a regimen is necessary to keep them within the normal levels of glycemia. The subclinical hypothyroidism has been also studied in the same patients.


El principal indicador del impacto de la yodación de la sal de consumo humano es la concentración urinaria de yodo la cual es útil en el monitoreo de la sal. En la encuesta del año 1988 realizada en el Paraguay, se alcanzó una prevalencia de bocio de 48,6% en la población escolar con un déficit de yodo en la sal, pero el año 2000 en el estudio del proyecto de Tiroides Móvil, se redujo por el método ecográfico a 17%. Ese mismo año la mediana de los niveles urinarios en niños escolares de 6-12 años fue 258 µg/L, considerando que 30% se encontraba entre el valor ideal de 100 a 199 µg/L y 46,1% sobre 300 µg/L, implicando un riesgo de exceso de yodo en dicha población con las posibles consecuencias de aparición tanto de hipo como de hipertiroidismo. El 93% presentó exceso de yodo en la sal y la mediana urinaria fue 437 ug/ mL. Un grupo de embarazadas han sido estudiadas en el Hospital San Pablo por primera vez en el Paraguay para la determinación de la yoduria, yodo en sal, diabetes gestacional, hipotiroidismo en el embarazo y sus valores antropométricos resultando un hipotiroidismo subclínico del 50% y diabetes gestacional del 50%. Objetivo: Determinar las yodurias en la población escolar de 6-12 años pre púber de ambos sexos en 17 departamentos del país y en una submuestra en embarazadas y también niveles de glicemia en el embarazo en un hospital de Asunción. Sujetos y Métodos: En el periodo del 2006-2007 fueron evaluados 4.487 escolares randomizados, en una muestra probabilística, 3.198 en el área rural y 1.289 en el área urbana con muestras en orina casual. El año 2015, doscientas embarazadas fueron estudiadas con muestras de glicemia en ayunas y 2 horas post prandial, dosaje de TSH, yodo en sal de 100 gramos de la sal de consumo en sus hogares y de orina para ver la concentración de yodo en sal y urinaria de yodo. Todos los candidatos fueron estudiados bajo consentimiento autorizado y de acuerdo a normas éticas. Resultados: Al comparar los niveles de yodo en orina en el nivel más que adecuado y el excesivo de la yoduria se vió que éste último nivel estaba marcadamente elevado (93.8%), que la mediana de los niveles mayores a 300 ug/L era del 100% del total de las 4.487 muestras de orina, mientras que la mediana de los niveles de yoduria entre 300-500 µg/L fue de 91,3% y por encima de 500 fue 9.7% lo cual implicó el riesgo de desarrollar enfermedades tiroideas autoinmunes. Las embarazadas presentaron una mediana urinaria de yodo 484 µg/L, diabetes gestacional e hipotiroidismo subclínico en 50%. Conclusión: Para normalizar los niveles de yoduria, es necesario disminuir la cantidad de yodo en la sal. La recomendación es insistir en el monitoreo de la adecuada yodación de las sales de consumo familiar y continuar con la vigilancia y el monitoreo constante en sitios centinelas divulgando la importancia de la adecuada ingesta de yodo a la población. Un régimen dietético a las embarazadas es necesario implementar en el primer trimestre del embarazo.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to develop an in vitro protocol for the micropropagation of Pluchea sagittalis (Lam.) Cabrera. Plants were regenerated in vitro from stem segments. The procedure employed includes: 1) surface sterilization of shoots by immersion in 70% ethanol for 10 s followed by 1.0% NaOCl for 10 min, and subsequent immersion in 0.05% HgCl2 for 3 min and two washes with sterile distilled water; 2) induction of root and shoot by culture on hormone-free Murashige and Skoog medium (MS); 3) acclimatization of 60 day-old-plantlets in soil under ex vitro conditions. Minimum contamination was observed for apical shoot explants (10%). However, independently of the explant position in the stem, all explants regenerated new shoots. Various successive cultivations from stem explants every 60 days during more than 1 year have been shown to be a suitable method to propagate P. sagittalis in vitro. Low salt concentration (25% of the normal concentration) in the medium promoted greater growth of plantlets because the plants had a higher number of roots and longer roots in such an environment. Our protocol for the micropropagation of P. sagittalis can be accomplished as a two-step procedure within a short period of time (two months) before transplanting.


RESUMO: O Objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver um protocolo para a micropropagação in vitro da Pluchea sagittalis (Lam.) Cabrera. Plantas foram regeneradas in vitro a partir de segmentos de ramo. O procedimento empregado incluiu: 1) esterilização da superfície de ramos pela imersão em etanol 70% por 10 s seguida pela de NaOCl 1.0% por 10 min e, subsequentemente, em HgCl2 0.05% por 3 min e duas lavagens em água destilada e esterilizada; 2) indução de raízes e parte aérea pelo cultivo em meio Murashige & Skoog (MS) isento de hormônio; 3) aclimatização de plantas com 60 dias de idade em solo sob condições ex vitro. Contaminação mínima foi observada em explantes caulinares do ápice (10%). Entretanto, independentemente da posição do segmento no caule, todos explantes regeneraram novos ramos. Vários cultivos sucessivos a cada 60 dias durante mais de um ano tem mostrado ser um método adequado para a propagação in vitro de P. sagittalis. A baixa concentração de sais no meio (25% da concentração normal) promoveu maior crescimento das plântulas devido às mesmas apresentarem maior número e comprimento de raízes. O protocolo para a micropropagação da P. sagittalis pode ser executado em procedimento de duas etapas dentro de um período de tempo curto (dois meses) antes do transplantio.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Increasing salt preferences with age are said to increase preferences of salty foods, thereby leading to greater sodium consumption, which has further implication for hypertension. This study examined the link between preference of salty taste and dietary factors and health-related risk factors in Korean elderly people. METHODS: We studied 312 elderly individuals aged > 65 years (male, 100 and female, 212). With each subject, pleasant concentration of NaCl was estimated using the sipand-spit method. Dietary habits, food preferences, consumption frequencies, anthropometric and biochemical assessment were assessed. RESULTS: The pleasant salt concentration was significantly increased in individuals older than 75 years (p < 0.05). Subjects who liked high concentration of salt showed significantly higher preferences for salty foods (p < 0.001). Results showed significant effects (p < 0.01) of fruit & fruit juice consumption frequencies, MNA (mini-nutritional assessment), cognition score, BMI, body fat %, waist circumference, arm circumference, calf circumference, vitamin D level that subjects who likes low salty taste were higher than subjects who likes high salty taste. CONCLUSIONS: The preference for salty taste in the elderly was not correlated with hypertension. But, increased preference for salty taste with age and increased salty food preferences may result in higher sodium consumption. Therefore, nutritional education regarding lowering salt preference and favorable behaviors of low-salt diet is needed to improve the quality of life in the rural elderly.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the inlfuence factors on detection of activity of four coagulation factors in prothrombin complex concentrates (PCC) by several factors. Methods Using Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China (2010) as reference, the activity of four coagulation factors in PCC were investigated by choosing different pre-treatments, different diluents, different salt concentration, different standard human plasma and different company reagents. Results The activity of FII, FVII, FX were decreased and FIX was increased in the condition of adding protamine sulfate, and there were no differences of four coagulation factors whether warm bath in 37 for 15 min or not. However, the differences of four coagulation factors were significant by using deficient plasma, saline, distilled water and commercial dilution buffer(P<0.05). The activity of coagulation factor II, X in 1 mol/L salt concentration of PCC were significantly lower than in 0.25 mol/L(P<0.05), while coagulation factor VII, IX were not. The activity of FII, FVII, FIX, and FX were different by using different standard human plasma to make standard curve. The activity of four coagulation factors existed significant difference(P=0.00) by using SIEMENS company reagents and domestic reagents. Conclusion Choosing different pre-treatments, different dilution buffers, salt concentration, standard human plasma and commercial kits will inlfuence the detection result of coagulation factors.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of salt (NaCl) recognition threshold and pleasant salt concentrations of Korean rural elderly subjects on preference of salty food as well as food group consumption patterns. The subjects were 213 elderly people (male 71 and female 142) over 65 and under 90 yr of age from Sunchang area. The higher values were found with male subjects in the areas of basic taste recognition threshold and pleasant concentration level of salt. The taste sensitivity scores of male subjects did not decrease with the increasing age, but female subjects exhibited a significant decrease with the age. The major determinant factor of salt preference of the elderly subjects in this study appeared to be personal pleasant concentration of salt rather than salt recognition threshold level and this trend was more evident in males than in females. The subject group of lower salt pleasant concentration i.e. consuming less salt showed the higher number of fruit and fruit juice intakes per week, and higher MNA (define this) scores were implying that they display more desirable nutritional status. Therefore, nutritional education focused on not only a variety of food consumption but also lowering pleasant salt concentration levels is advised to improve the quality of nutrition in the elderly.
