ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to psychometrically test the Volleyball Self-Efficacy Scale for Brazilian athletes from youth categories. The study was conducted in four stages, with four different sample groups. For content-based evidence analysis, a group of 20 athletes participated, with a mean age of 14.30 ± 1.17 years and practice time of 4.60 ± 2.10 years, for semantic analysis, after a group of four students, with a mean age of 35.75 ± 12.23 years and experience time 25.0 ± 11.02 years, to verify the semantic analysis and another group of 20 athletes, with a mean age of 14.45 ± 1.30 years and practice time 5.50 ± 2.20 years for the pilot study. To test the evidence based on the internal structure and the evidence based on other variables, a group of 454 base athletes, of both sexes, with a mean age of 14.33 ± 1.18 years and practice time 3.79 ± 2.13 years was verified. The results pointed to evidence based on content, evidence based on internal structure and evidence based on other variables, through convergent validity (collective efficacy and results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis) and discriminant (Average Variance Extracted and correlation between the dimensions of the VSES-B). The validation process of the Volleyball Self-Efficacy Scale for Base Athletes allows us to conclude that the instrument has good psychometric properties to measure self-efficacy, considering technical, tactical, conditioning and psychological skills of emotional cognitive self-control that are part of the sport context of the modality. In addition, it provides relevant information for the development of future psychometric research based on contemporary validity references.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To assess the reliability, constructive validity and item characteristics of the general self-efficacy scale (GSES) among Chinese medical postgraduates using classical test theory and item response theory. Methods:A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1 021 medical postgraduates from 6 comprehensive level Ⅲ A hospitals in Beijing. Demographic characteristics and general self-efficacy were investigated. SPSS 24.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Internal consistency of the GSES was evaluated using Cronbach’s α coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient. Factor analyses were implemented to test the structure of the scale. An item response theory (IRT) framework with a graded response model was performed to estimate the parameters of each item. Results:The overall Cronbach’s α coefficient of the GSES was 0.92. Parallel analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported the unidimensional structure of the GSES. The discrimination parameter of the 10 items ranged from 1.82 to 3.65, and the difficulty parameter ranged from -3.51 to 1.66, with a monotonically increasing trend. The maximum test information of the scale among medical postgraduates was 19.16. Conclusion:The GSES has good reliability, validity and measurement precision, showing a good applicability in the survey of medical postgraduates. However, the difficulty of specific items is relatively low, and the scale may be further optimized and improved.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: The passage from adolescence to young adulthood introduces many challenges and chances aimed at promoting independence, financial self-sufficiency, assumption of responsibilities and separation from parents. Literature shows that in the continuum between these two phases of life, many factors intervene, producing significant differentiations. Methods: This study considered three dimensions - well-being, measured through the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure (CORE-OM); spontaneity, measured through the Spontaneity Assessment Inventory-Revised (SAI-R); and self-efficacy, measured through the General Self-Efficacy scale (GSE). The study involved two groups of Italian participants: 495 adolescents, aged between 13 and 19 years, selected at a high school; and 368 young adults, aged between 18 and 30 years, recruited by snowball sampling. Results: Results of confirmatory factor analysis for each instrument in each group indicate the validity of the three instruments for both age groups. No significant differences were found between adolescents and young adults on total or subtotal scores of the CORE-OM, except for the risk factor. Conversely, the mean scores obtained with SAI-R and GSE were very different between adolescents and young adults. Conclusions: The results of path analysis show a significant mediation of spontaneity in the link between self-efficacy and all specific psychological distress domains for adolescents. Instead, there is a significant mediation of spontaneity between self-efficacy and all specific psychological distress domains except the risk domain for young adults.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Breastfeeding is a practice directly related to the health of the mother and especially the baby. Despite being a natural process, many mothers report difficulties with breastfeeding. This study aimed to seek scientific evidence on the issue: "Can a mother with more confidence in breastfeeding exclusively breastfeed her baby for 06 months?". We conducted a systematic review with a search in five electronic databases, and included four cohort studies for evaluation. We conducted a qualitative analysis of the results, considering the methodological differences and lack of data, and were unable to perform meta-analysis. Confidence in breastfeeding was evaluated by using the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale. The studies analyzed showed statistically significant association between the practice of breastfeed and confidence in breastfeeding. The application of a scale to evaluate trust and identify mothers at risk for early weaning appeared to be a reliable measurement tool, capable of facilitating action planning by health professionals. The evidence showed association between mothers with higher levels of confidence in breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, but these results could not be generalized because of the heterogeneity of the population.

ABSTRACT

Medical interviewing skills were assessed with the objective structured clinical examination using simulated/standardized patients (SP) in 36 5th-year medical students. ultaneously, assessment of cognitive-behavioral characteristics was performed using 7 kinds of scales (locus of control, social skills, self-esteem, general self-efficacy, medical interviewing-specific self-efficacy, person perception of self, and person perception of the patient) on the same students to clarify correlations with medical interviewing skills. Students who had attended a small-group mini-workshop session for medical interviewing skills showed only a significantly better ability to summarize. Personal familiarity with the patient was the only factor among the cognitive-behavioral factors studied which was a significantly correlated with medical interviewing skills. Among the six medical interviewing skills, only summarization and confirmation skills were positively correlated with the students' self-efficacy and the objective assessment with the objective structured clinical examination. We conclude that 1) medical interviewing skills can be taught regardless of the cognitive-behavioral abilities of each student; 2) teaching summarization and confirmation skills are especially valuable and important in teaching medical interviewing to medical students.

ABSTRACT

Stress urinary incontinence is most common type in urinary incontinence. Most women had been suffering with stress urinary incontinence for more than a year in the community without seeking medical help. Under the assumption that stress urinary incontinence will be treated or improved by keeping PFM exercise with his/her continence confidence, this study was conducted. This study examined Continence self-efficacy effect on PFM exercise adherence. Subject were in 48 women aged 20 to 75 years with stress urinary incontinence and were recommended by their doctor to attempt PFM exercise as one treatment method.. Data were collected by self-administered report using Continence Self-Efficacy Scale, PFM exercise adherence check sheet. Telephone support was used as a method of CEIP to increase Continence self-efficacy. Continence self-efficacy score was higher in the intervention group than in control group (T=-3.23, P<.01), PFM exercise adherence was better in the intervention group than in control group (T=-4.03, P<.001). Through this research, it was also found that there were three types in attitude toward treatment; those who want to be treated completely, those who want to be relieved, and those who think urine loss is no problem. It can be concluded that to increase Continence self-efficacy was useful to the PFM exercise adherence of women with stress urinary incontinence.
