ABSTRACT

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a group of unexplainable abnormal proliferation and aggregation of Langerhans cell. LCH can be classified into four clinical variants: Letterer-Siwe disease, Hand-Schüller-Christian disease, eosinophilic granuloma, and congenital self-healing LCH. LCH is most prevalent in children. Lesions can be localized in a single system or multiple organs, and clinical manifestations vary depending on the affected organs. The skin and mucocutaneous tissues are the starting point of the affected tissue. This study presents a LCH case characterized by transient self-healing. This case can further provide references for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of LCH.

ABSTRACT

Polymer self-healing is mainly based on the molecular structure and interaction of polymers, and some need external stimulation, such as light, heat, pH, etc. In recent years, many studies have found that the self-healing properties of polymers can prolong the life of materials, while maintaining the mechanical properties of polymers after healing. According to the different action modes of polymer materials, it can be divided into autonomous self-healing and non-autonomous self-healing. Among them, autonomous self-healing mainly works through reversible covalent bonds (Schiff base bond, Diels-Alder reaction, hydrazide bond), reversible non-covalent bonds (hydrogen bond, metal-ligand coordination bond, electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking interaction, hydrophobic interaction) and a combination of the two interactions. Drug carriers with unique self-healing properties play an important role in the encapsulation and stable release of biomacromolecules. In this review, the self-healing mechanism of polymers and their applications in the field of biomedicine were briefly summarized and discussed.

ABSTRACT

The prognosis of infectious diseases is determined by host-pathogen interactions. Control of pathogens has been the central dogma of treating infectious diseases in modern medicine, but the pathogen-directed medicine is facing significant challenges, including a lack of effective antimicrobials for newly emerging pathogens, pathogen drug resistance, and drug side effects. Here, a mathematic equation (termed equation of host-pathogen interactions, HPI-Equation) is developed to dissect the key variables of host-pathogen interactions. It shows that control of pathogens does not necessarily lead to host recovery. Instead, a combination of promoting a host's power of self-healing and balancing immune responses provides the best benefit for host. Moreover, the HPI-Equation elucidates the scientific basis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a host-based medicine that treats infectious diseases by promoting self-healing power and balancing immune responses. The importance of self-healing power elucidated in the HPI-Equation is confirmed by recent studies that the tolerance mechanism, which is discovered in plants and animals and conceptually similar to self-healing power, improves host survival without directly attacking pathogens. In summary, the HPI-Equation describes host-pathogen interactions with mathematical logic and precision; it translates the ancient wisdoms of TCM into apprehensible modern sciences and opens a new venue for integrating TCM and modern medicine for a future medicine. Sun J. A mathematic equation derived from host-pathogen interactions elucidates the significance of integrating modern medicine with traditional Chinese medicine to treat infectious diseases. ABSTRACT

Concrete is the most widely used modern building material. It is easy to crack under the action of stress, which makes the concrete structure permeable, affecting the durability and integrity of the structure, and thus shortening its service life. Microbial in-situ remediation technology is a low cost, effective and green way for concrete crack repairing. Due to its excellent biocompatibility, service life elongation, economic losses and environmental pollution reduction, microbial in-situ remediation technology has been intensively investigated. Bacillus has attracted much attention because of its excellent biomineralization ability, extremely strong environmental tolerance and long-term survival ability of its spores. In order to promote the research, development and large-scale application of microbial in-situ healing of concrete, the paper reviews the mechanism of spore-based in-situ healing of concrete, the survival of spores exposed in concrete, the influence of spores and external additives on the mechanical properties of concrete, progress in research and development of healing agent as well as healing effects. Moreover, future research focuses such as improving the survival ability of spores in the harsh environment of concrete, reducing the influence of external additives on the mechanical properties of concrete, and strengthening the healing effect of actual field applications are also summarized.

ABSTRACT

@#The patient, male, 1 year, was admitted to our hospital with cardiac murmur. Cardiac ultrasonography showed "complete atrioventricular septal defect (C-AVSD), secondary orifice atrial septal defect (ASD), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), left superior vena cava, and pulmonary hypertension". The patient got follow-up at the age of 3, 6, 9 months and 1 year, with no feeding difficulties, no obvious underdevelopment and no history of repeated respiratory infections. Cardiac ultrasonography showed that the ventricular septal defect (VSD) healed spontaneously at 9 months of age. At 1 year of age, he was admitted to the hospital with "partial atrioventricular septal defect (P-AVSD)" and accepted surgery. Intraoperative exploration showed that the primary orifice ASD was 12 mm, the atrioventricular valve was divided into two groups, and the left atrioventricular valve had three leaflets: anterior, posterior, and lateral one. A cleft was between the anterior and posterior leaflets. The annulus was not enlarged with diameter of 13 mm. The right atrioventricular valve developed well, with fibrous hyperplasia and adhesion under the septal valve. No VSD was seen. The cleft was sutured intermittently. Autologous pericardial patch was used to repair the primary orifice ASD, and the coronary sinus was separated into the right atrium. Self-healing of VSD patients with C-AVSD is very rare, suggesting that patients with C-AVSD with normal range of development, and without obvious clinical symptoms and secondary damage, should be followed up and accept elective surgery in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Self-healing materials have rapidly developed in recent years to overcome the micro-cracks occurring in the polymer matrix. Self-healing ability offers autonomous crack repairs to prolong the service lives of polymers or polymer composites. As a main approach, extrinsic self-healing materials based on microcapsules have been applied in dentistry recently. This paper comprehensively presented and reviewed the definition and classification of self-healing materials, the synthesis of microcapsules, the calculation of self-healing efficiency, and the application of self-healing materials in dentistry. The future directions of self-healing polymers are also discussed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#This study aimed to develop novel self-adhesive resin cement with antibacterial and self-healing properties. Furthermore, the dentin bonding strength, mechanical properties, self-healing efficiency, and antibacterial property of the developed cement were measured.@*METHODS@#Novel nano-antibacterial inorganic fillers that contain quaternary ammonium salts with long-chain alkyls were synthesized. These fillers were added into self-adhesive resin cement containing self-healing microcapsules at mass fractions of 0, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, or 10.0%. The dentin shear bonding test was used to test the bonding strength, whereas the flexural test was used to measure the flexural strength and elastic modulus of the cement. The single-edge V-notched beam method was used to measure self-healing efficiency, and human dental plaque microcosm biofilms were chosen to calculate the antibacterial property.@*RESULTS@#The dentin shear bond strength significantly decreased when the mass fraction of the nano-antibacterial inorganic fillers in the novel cement reached 7.5% (P0.1). Resin cement containing 2.5% mass fraction or more nano-antibacterial inorganic fillers significantly inhibited the metabolic activity of dental plaque microcosm biofilms, indicating strong antibacterial potency (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#The novel self-adhesive resin cement exhibited promising antibacterial and self-healing properties, which enable the cement to be used for dental applications.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#This investigation aimed to develop a novel self-healing and antibacterial dental resin composite. The effects of water immersion on its properties were also evaluated.@*METHODS@#Microcapsules filled with healing agent of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate were synthesized on the basis of previous studies. Antibacterial resin composite contained nano-antibacterial inorganic fillers that were modified by quaternary ammonium salt with long-chain alkyl. Microcapsules were incorporated into antibacterial resin composite at mass fraction of 7.5%. A commercial resin composite named Tetric N-Ceram was used as control. The resin samples were immersed in 37 °C distilled water for different periods. A flexural test was used to measure the mechanical properties of the novel resin composite. A single-edge V-notched beam method was used to measure fracture toughness and self-healing efficiency. A dental plaque microcosm biofilm model with human saliva as inoculum was formed. Colony-forming units (CFU) and lactic acid production of biofilm on the novel resin composite were calculated to test the antibacterial property.@*RESULTS@#Mechanical properties and fracture toughness decreased significantly after the composite was immersed in water for 30 days (P0.05). Water immersion did not weaken the self-healing capability of the composite (P>0.05), and self-healing efficiency of 64% could still be obtained even after 270 days. The antibacterial resin composite showed a strong inhibition effect on the biofilm metabolic activity versus water immersion time from 1 day to 270 days. Therefore, the composite could still have a promising antibacterial property even after being immersed in water (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Water immersion could weaken the mechanical properties of the novel self-healing and antibacterial resin composite, but it insignificantly affected the self-healing and antibacterial properties of the composite.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To report a case of late-onset self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Case description: A 4½-month-old female patient presenting with an eythematopurpuric eruption underwent a skin biopsy for histopathology and was first diagnosed with isolated cutaneous Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Her lesions regressed within a few months and she was retrospectively diagnosed with late-onset self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis after being without skin or systemic involvement in a follow-up four years later. Comments: Self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis, which is characterized by clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells and presents with cutaneous lesions, is a rare self-limited variant of histiocytosis and can only be diagnosed retrospectively, after the patient remains free from systemic involvement for several years. Although it presents at birth or during the neonatal period, only a few cases of its late-onset type regarding the age of onset have been reported. Purpuric lesions that appear after the neonatal period serve as a clue for late-onset self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis and the patients should be monitored regularly for systemic involvement if the diagnosis is confirmed by a cutaneous biopsy.

ABSTRACT

Self-healing juvenile cutaneous mucinosis (SHJCM) is a rare disorder of unknown origin that affects healthy children. It is characterized by multiplication of transient papules and nodules on the head and periarticular area. Histopathologically, lesions show mucin deposition in the dermis or subcutis. A 9-year-old male patient presented with multiple skin-colored papules and nodules on the face and both hands. These papules and nodules had appeared over the preceding months and had been increasing in number. He was otherwise healthy and had no underlying systemic disorders. Skin biopsy in the right thenar nodule revealed deposition of amorphous material stained positively with Alcian blue (pH 2.5) within the dermis and subcutis. Spontaneous resolution occurred over several months without sequelae.

ABSTRACT

Congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis is a variant of cutaneous Langerhans cell histiocytosis seen in newborns. It is characterized by generalized brownish to erythematous papules or nodules that resolve spontaneously within several weeks to months, without involvement of other organs. Erythematous erosive patches or vesicles are rare clinical features of congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis; only 11 cases have been reported in the literature. A newborn female presented with erythematous erosive patches and vesicles on the whole body without systemic symptoms. Histopathologically, multiple lymphocytes and histiocytic cells with kidney shaped nuclei were observed in the dermis. Immunohistochemical stain showed positive reactions for CD1a and S100 in histiocytic cells in the dermis. All lesions involuted spontaneously within a month without treatment. Here we report a rare case of congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis presenting as erythematous erosive patches and vesicles, with a literature review.

ABSTRACT

An interesting aspect of the many recent researches on the history of medicine in Korea is a concentration on oral histories, a trend that is sure to supplement the lack of medical documents and historical materials covering the modern period. This trend will also contribute to the invention of new approaches in the historiography of medicine. Although the fragments of oral testimony cannot be expected to give a perfect representation of historical reality, such "slices of life" help represent history from the viewpoint of ordinary people and members of the medical profession who are less often acknowledged. The recent researches that have taken oral testimony on the history of medicine in Korea have both racked up achievements as well as encountered limitations. First, many disciplines such as history, literature, cultural anthropology, folklore, sociology, and the history of medicine have used the technique of oral histories in the research approaches, and, especially since the start of the 2000s, have produced a variety of materials. The large amounts of raw materials published in these many disciplines are sure to bring even higher research achievements. Second, for the most part, oral history researches in the medical profession have concentrated on second-tier practitioners, such as midwives, apothecaries, and acupuncturists, and the experiences of such untypical sufferers as lepers and victims of germ and atomic warfare. While the oral history of more prominent medical figures tends to underline his or her story of success, the oral histories of minority participants in the medical profession and patients can reveal the truth that has remained veiled until now. It is especially meaningful that these oral histories enable researchers to reconstruct history from below, as it were. Third, the researches that take the oral history approach are intended to complement documentary records. Surprisingly, through being given the opportunity to tell their histories, the interviewees have frequently experienced the testimony as an act of self-healing. Formally, an oral history is not a medical practice, but in many cases the interviewee is able to realize his or her own identity and to affirm his or her own life's story. It is in this light that we need to pay attention to the possibilities of such a humanistic form of therapy. Finally, because the research achievements depend on oral materials, the objectivity and rationality of description take on an important research virtue. When conducting an oral history, the researcher partakes of a close relationship with interviewees through persistent contact and can often identify with them. Accordingly, the researcher needs to take care to maintain a critical view of oral materials and adopt an objective perspective over his or her own research object.

ABSTRACT

Congenital self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis (CSHLCH), also called as Hashimoto-Pritzker disease, is a rare, benign variant of histiocytosis. Despite the initial dramatic clinical presentation, affected infants are otherwise healthy and skin lesions disappear spontaneously within several weeks to months. We present a case of CSHLCH presenting as blueberry muffin baby. The lesions appeared in the first week of life and lasted 6 months. The follow-up period was 24 months, without any signs of relapse. At the pediatric dermatology unit of our clinic, during the last 20 years, we had 10 children with Langerhans cell histiocytosis and among them only one with CSHLCH. In the literature, we found only 5 newborns with Langerhans cell histiocytosis presenting as blueberry muffin baby, among them only 4 with self-healing CSHLCH. The early recognition of CSHLCH may spare children from redundant and potentially toxic systemic treatment.

ABSTRACT

Congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis is a rare, congenital, benign, self-healing variant of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. It usually appears as multiple papules or nodules; however, occurrence of the solitary type is very rare. We report on a case of solitary congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis in a 29-day-old girl who presented with a papule on her sole. Two months later, the lesion regressed with a slight scar. Based upon clinical and histologic findings, we made a diagnosis of solitary congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis. In this report, we summarized reported cases of solitary congenital self-healing retioculohistiocytosis in Korea with a review of the literature.

ABSTRACT

A two-month-old female child presented with discrete skin-colored papules on the forehead and scalp. She was earlier diagnosed to have neuroblastoma of the adrenal gland which had metastasized to the liver. Histological sections of the skin lesion showed a nodule composed of sheets of cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and an occasional grooving of the nucleus. These cells were CD 68 positive. Eosinophilic abscesses were seen in between the neoplastic cells.

ABSTRACT

Congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis (CSHRH) typically presents at birth or in the first few weeks of life as a widespread eruption of cutaneous red-brown papulonodules that resolve spontaneously without involvement of other organs. While multiple lesions are common, a solitary lesion is rare. We describe a solitary type of CSHRH in a full-term, male neonate. He had an erythematous papule with a yellowish crust on the left heel without any systemic symptoms. Four weeks later, the skin lesion had disappeared spontaneously.
