ABSTRACT

Abstract In Tunisia, Monastir bay, extending for 38 km along the eastern coast of Tunisia, harbors different species of bivalves such as the clam Ruditapes decussatus, a species of major socio-economic interest. Despite its importance, no studies have been carried out about the morphology of this mollusc in Monastir bay. Thus, the current study aimed to analyze the shell morphological variations in the European clamRuditapes decussatus from Monastir Bay coast. The comparison of the shell shape of individuals from different populations was performed based on samples taken at four different sites (Khniss, Ksiba, Bkalta and Sokrine). Variance analysis of the morphometric indices (elongation, compactness, convexity and density) for the four populations indicated significant differences among sites with (p=0<0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed two intra-population groups for Sokrine site, supporting an intra-population variation in the shell morphology. Allometric relationships established between linear variables (shell length, height and width) and ponderal variables (total weight, shell weight) as well as the relative growth between variables (isometry vs. allometry) were analyzed. All morphometric relationships were highly significant (P<0.001) with high correlation coefficients (R2: 0.714-0.982), showing positive allometric growth for Bkalta and negative allometric growth for Sokrine. The data obtained will be useful in research studies and have practical application in diverse research fields such as biology, ecology, fisheries assessment and management.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Sri Lanka, an island off the tip of the Southeast of the Indian subcontinent processes the earliest skeletal evidence of anatomically modern Homo sapiens (37,000 B.P.) and the best human skeletal record sequence in the South Asian region. Adding another to the list, the skeletal remains, which belong to Mesolithic culture were found at Pallemalala shell midden in Southern Sri Lanka during scientific archaeological exploration by Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya. Sri Lanka. The aim of the study was to determine the minimum number of human individuals, age, sex, and pathological conditions related to the ancient Pallemalala commiunity. For the primary analysis, 426 bone fragments were available. Out of those, 233 bones were identified as human bones which represent 7 minimum number of individuals. The rest of the collection comprises some animal bones and shell species. The community was predominated by the female population. The identified age categories were around 20 years, between 35-45 years, and over 45 years. The encountered pathological lesions were bone thickening, alveolar resorption, dental abscesses, dental caries, antemorterm tooth loss, calculus deposits and brown colour stains on teeth. Regarding the dietary pattern, it was evident that their diet may have consisted of coarse foodstuffs with an extremely basic dietary chemistry.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the quality of Amomi Fructus in the market, and to compare the difference between the seed mass and shell, so as to provide a basis for standardizing the usage of Amomi Fructus. MethodThe properties, thin layer identification, moisture, the content of bornyl acetate were determined by the methods in the 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and the ash and extract content were determined according to the collection method of the 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia. ResultAmong the 17 batches of samples, except the content of bornyl acetate in 2 batches of Amomum longiligulare, 2 batches of A. longiligulare and A. villosum mixture was lower than the standard, the quality of other samples all met the standard of the 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, but there were two specifications with shell and without shell. The husk rate, volatile oil, extract and bornyl acetate contents of the seed mass and shell were tested. It was found that the content of volatile oil in three kinds of Amomi Fructus seed mass was 1.8-5.3 times that of the corresponding shell, and the content of bornyl acetate in the seed mass was 8.8-62.1 times that of the corresponding shell, but there was little difference in the extract content. ConclusionBased on the above research, it is considered that the content of bornyl acetate in A. longiligulare contained in the 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia remains to be discussed. It is tentatively determined that the total ash content of Amomi Fructus should not be more than 10.0%, and the extract content should not be less than 15.0%. At the same time, it is suggested that when Amomi Fructus is used as medicine, the dosage of Amomi Fructus should be calculated according to the removal rate of 20%-30% of shell, and it should be crushed regardless of whether it is used in shell or not.

ABSTRACT

The effects of Ca:P total ratio and particle size of oyster shell meal (OSM) were evaluated in broiler diets. In Experiment 1, 800 broilers (22-42 days old) were distributed in a 2×2 factorial design, with two Ca:P ratios (1.7 and 2.0:1) and two OSM particle sizes (coarse = 1,354 µm and fine = 428 µm), totaling four treatments with 10 repetitions with 20 broilers. Feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio were calculated. In Experiment 2, 1,280 broilers were distributed in a 2×2×2 factorial design (1.7 and 2.0:1 Ca:P ratios; coarse and fine OSM; male and female broilers), with eight treatments and 16 repetitions with 10 broilers. Apparent metabolizability of dry matter, Ca, P, and apparent metabolizable energy (AME), as well as bone resistance, bone weight, ash, Ca, and P content in the tibia were assessed. Growth performance was not affected (P > 0.05). Coarse OSM increased tibia Ca content in male broilers (P < 0.001), and higher Ca:P ratio improved bone ash and bone resistance in both sexes (P < 0.001), but reduced P content in male broilers (P < 0.05); male broilers displayed heavier bones with higher ash content than females (P < 0.05). Metabolizability of Ca was improved with coarse OSM (P < 0.05); whereas metabolizability of DM, P, and AME was not affected (P > 0.05). In conclusion, diets with a Ca:P total ratio of 2.0:1 containing coarser OSM improved bone mineral composition, particularly in male broilers, and coarse OSM improved the metabolizability of Ca in broilers regardless of the Ca:P total ratio or broiler sex.

ABSTRACT

@#Proteases of nematodes play a crucial role in larval molting and, in addition to their active role in egg hatching, proteases are also considered a crucial factor in tissue invasion and connective tissue remodeling. In Toxocara canis, proteases play important roles throughout the complex life cycle. They can degrade components of a model of extracellular matrix, basement membranes and different physiological substrates. In the present study, measurements of the proteolytic activity of the perivitelline fluid (PF) surrounding Toxocara canis embryos at different stages of development, the hatching fluid (HF) surrounding the infective larvae, as well as the excretory secretory (ES) products of the larvae in the culture media were performed. Measurements were made using casein as substrate following the Sigma non-specific protease activity assay. The results showed that enzyme activity increased as the embryo matured. The infective larvae were found to continuously produce proteases in the surrounding HF and ES products after in vitro cultivation indicating that Toxocara canis proteases might be important for the worm in the egg and the host. Optimal enzymatic activity was found at pH 8. Incubation of the antiserum from infected mice with the HF and ES products decreased their proteolytic activities, suggesting that there may be a link between the proteases present in these fluids and the immune response.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the morphological variation of Oncomelania hupensis shells in Yunnan Province, so as to provide insights into the understanding of O. hupensis genetic evolution and control. Methods According to the O. hupensis density, geographical location, altitude, water system and environmental type, 12 administrative villages were sampled from 10 schistosomiasis-endemic counties (districts) in 3 prefectures (cities) of Yunnan Province as snail collection sites. From December 2021 to January 2022, about 200 snails were collected from each collection site, among which thirty adult snails (6 to 7 spirals) were randomly selected from each site, and the 11 morphological indexes of snail shells were measured and subjected to cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Results Of O. hupensis snails from 12 localities of Yunnan Province, the longest shell (7.33 mm) was detected in snails from Yongle Village, Eryuan County, with the shortest (4.68 mm) in Dongyuan Village, Gucheng District, and the largest angle of apex (59.47°) was measured in snails from Caizhuang Village, Midu County, with the smallest (41.40°) in Qiandian Village, Eryuan County. The mean coefficient of variation was 9.075% among O. hupensis snails from 12 localities of Yunnan Province, with the largest coefficient of variation seen in the thickness of the labra brim (29.809%). Among O. hupensis snails from 12 localities of Yunnan Province, the mean Euclidean distance was 2.26, with the shortest Euclidean distance seen between O. hupensis snails from Qiandian Village of Eryuan County and Wuxing Village of Dali City (0.26), and the largest found between O. hupensis snails from Caizhuang Village of Midu County and Cangling Village of Chuxiong County (8.17). Cluster analysis and principal component analysis classified O. hupensis snails from 12 localities of Yunnan Province into three categories, including the O. hupensis snail samples from Caizhuang Village of Midu County, O. hupensis snail samples from Cangling Village of Chuxiong County, and O. hupensis snail samples from Qiandian Village of Eryuan County, Wuxing Village of Dali City, Yangwu Village of Yongsheng County, Xiaoqiao Village of Xiangyun County, Yongle Village of Eryuan County, Xiaocen Village of Dali City, Anding Village of Nanjian County, Dongyuan Village of Gucheng District, Lianyi Village of Heqing County, and Dianzhong Village of Weishan County. The variations in these three categories of snail samples were mainly measured in the principal component 2 related to the angle of apex and the thickness of the labra brim. Conclusions The variations in the Euclidean distance and morphological features of shells of O. hupensis from 12 localities of Yunnan Province gradually rise with the decrease in the latitude of the collection sites. The angle of apex is an indicator for the growth of O. hupensis whorl.

ABSTRACT

This study explored the anticoagulant material basis and mechanism of Trichosanthis Semen and its shell and kernel based on spectrum-effect relationship-integrated molecular docking. High performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) fingerprints of Trichosanthis Semen and its shell and kernel were established. Prothrombin time(PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT) in mice in the low-and high-dose(5, 30 g·kg~(-1), respectively) Trichosanthis Semen, the shell, and kernel groups were determined as the coagulation markers. The spectrum-effect relationship and anticoagulant material basis of Trichosanthis Semen and its shell and kernel were analyzed with mean value calculation method of Deng's correlation degree(MATLAB) and the common effective component cluster was obtained. Then the common targets of the component cluster and coagulation were retrieved from TCMSP, Swiss-TargetPrediction, GenCLiP3, GeneCards, and DAVID, followed by Gene Ontology(GO) term enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG) pathway enrichment of the targets. The main anticoagulant molecular mechanism of the component cluster was verified by SYBYL-X 2.1.1. The spectrum-effect relationship of Trichosanthis Semen and its shell and kernel was in positive correlation with the dosage. The contribution of each component to anticoagulation was not the same, suggesting that the material basis for anticoagulation was different, but they have common effective components(i.e. common material basis), such as adenine(peak 3), uracil(peak 4), hypoxanthine(peak 6), xanthine(peak 9), and adenosine(peak 11). Network pharmacology showed that these components can act on multiple target proteins such as NOS3, KDR, and PTGS2, and exert anticoagulant effect through multiple pathways such as VEGF signaling pathway. They involved the biological functions such as proteolysis, cell component such as cytosol, and molecular functions. The results of molecular docking showed that the binding free energy of these components with NOS3(PDB ID: 1 D0 C), KDR(PDB ID: 5 AMN), and PTGS2(PDB ID: 4 COX) was ≤-5 kJ·mol~(-1), and the docking conformations were stable. Spectrum-effect relationship-integrated molecular docking can be used for the optimization, virtual screening, and verification of complex chemical and biological information of Chinese medicine. Trichosanthis Semen and its shell and kernel have the common material basis for anticoagulation and they exert the anticoagulant through multiple targets and pathways.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This research aims to compare the classical thin-layer models, stepwise fit regression method (SRG) and artificial neural networks (ANN) in the modelling of drying kinetics of shrimp shell and crab exoskeleton. Thus, drying curves were obtained using a convective dryer (3.0 m/s) at temperatures of 30.45 and 60oC. The results showed a decreasing tendency for the drying time as the temperature increased for both materials. Drying curves modelling of both materials showed fitted results with R 2 adj >0.998 and MRE<13.128% for some thin-layer models. On the other hand, by SRG a simple model could be obtained as a function of time and temperature, with the greatest accuracy being found in the modelling of experimental data of crab exoskeleton, with MRE<10.149%. Finally, the ANNs were employed successfully in the modelling of drying kinetics, showing high prediction quality with the trained recurrent ANN models.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Peanut shell (PS) which is an excessive waste-product from agricultural processes, it can be recycled to a natural adsorbent for example it uses as removal dyes. Synthetic dye effluent without improperly discharged from industries to the river cause wastewater and damage to living organisms, especially, anionic dyes are difficult removed by conventional treatments such as biological, chemical, oxidation, and physical-filtration. However, an adsorption treatment is widely used for decolorization of dyes and give the best results for removal of various types of dissolved coloring materials. This research was used Eosin Y (EO) for the anionic model of dyeing wastewater and used PS for agrowaste adsorbent. The purpose of this study was investigated the efficiency adsorption of EO removal by PS. This efficiency adsorption was measured by different PS dosages, contact times, adsorbate concentration and equilibrium data. The results can be concluded that the PS had the efficiency adsorption of EO removal due to the equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) and the highest dose of PS were balanced to adsorption of dye. The highest EO removal percentage was found in 87.7%, the qe was 0.351 mg g-1 and can adsorb from 10 mg L-1 to 1.23 mg L-1 in 25 g L-1 of PS dose at 30 minutes. In addition, the PS structure was found in multi-layer and many porous which is suitable for adsorbent. The morphological examination of PS was shown before and after adsorption that not changed. Therefore, PS might be an alternative choice for removal dye, and be used for the recycle adsorbent agrowaste as a commercial product for adding their values.

ABSTRACT

Reducing the inflammatory response is a major goal in the therapy of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Herein, we integrated palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) with selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) and obtained a multiple nanosystem (Pd@Se-HA NPs) that could simultaneously scavenge hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) and provide a photothermal effect. The Pd@Se-HA NPs were constructed by a simple self-assembly method in which Se NPs were electrostatically bonded to Pd NPs; hyaluronic acid (HA) was linked to the NPs by ester bonding to provide macrophage targeting ability. The experiments show that the combined therapy of eliminating ⋅OH with Se NPs and utilizing PTT with Pd NPs could effectively reduce the inflammatory response in macrophages more effectively than either individual NP treatment. In addition, the outer layer of HA could specifically target the CD44 receptor to enhance the accumulation of Pd@Se NPs at the lesion, further enhancing the therapeutic effect. After treatment for 15 days, the Pd@Se-HA NPs nearly eliminated the inflammatory response in the joints of mice in an induced RA model, and prevented joint damage and degradation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the inclusion of kaolin levels in the diet of brown egg layers at the end of the production cycle. A completely randomized design involved the distribution of 288 brown egg layers into six treatments of eight replications, with six birds per replication. When the birds reached the age of 63 weeks, the feeding of the experimental diets began. Diets differed by the inclusion of increasing levels of kaolin: Control (no additive), and the inclusion of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% kaolin. The performance, egg quality, intestinal morphometry, and excreta moisture were evaluated. The inclusion of kaolin promoted improvement in the jejunum villus height, enabling less feed intake; however, there were no significant differences in egg quality. The excreta moisture decreased linearly as the kaolin level in the diet increased. The inclusion of 5% kaolin in the diet of brown egg layers at the end of the production cycle improved intestinal morphometry and the quality of excreta through a reduction of moisture.

ABSTRACT

The nucleus accumbens shell (NAcSh) plays an important role in reward and aversion. Traditionally, NAc dopamine receptor 2-expressing (D2) neurons are assumed to function in aversion. However, this has been challenged by recent reports which attribute positive motivational roles to D2 neurons. Using optogenetics and multiple behavioral tasks, we found that activation of D2 neurons in the dorsomedial NAcSh drives preference and increases the motivation for rewards, whereas activation of ventral NAcSh D2 neurons induces aversion. Stimulation of D2 neurons in the ventromedial NAcSh increases movement speed and stimulation of D2 neurons in the ventrolateral NAcSh decreases movement speed. Combining retrograde tracing and in situ hybridization, we demonstrated that glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons in the ventral pallidum receive inputs differentially from the dorsomedial and ventral NAcSh. All together, these findings shed light on the controversy regarding the function of NAcSh D2 neurons, and provide new insights into understanding the heterogeneity of the NAcSh.

ABSTRACT

Fluoride occurs naturally in our environment but we consume it in small amounts. Exposure can occur through dietary intake, respiration and fluoride supplements. The most important factor for fluoride presence in alimentation is fluoridated water. Fluoride content in groundwater has become a national issue affecting the entire India. When the recommended limit of fluoride by WHO is 1.5 mg/L, in some particular parts of India fluoride levels are as high as 35 mg/l. Increased fluoride intake causes dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis and neurological problems. Major problems associated with fluoride remediation are lack of cheap adsorbent to remove fluoride content in water for poor communities of India. Hence, development of community-based defluoridation unit is needed with a technique which is cost-effective, technologically simple in operation while being able to keep the fluoride level in permissible limits. On the basis of extensive investigations, different researchers have developed simple and economical domestic defluoridation processes The present review gives a brief account of prevalence, sources of fluoride toxicity and cost effective defluoridation method carried out on effects of fluoride in the last few decades. Thus cost effective absorbent which has high efficacy in fluoride removal from water can be provided to poor communities thereby preventing fluorosis

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT A green coconut shell is considered a residue of complex degradation, and can also be a focus of proliferation of diseases. Based on this premise, it is necessary to study new renewable sources of energy, the use of residues of green coconut shell as an energy source has beneficial aspects, since economically and technically viable. Thus, this article aims to evaluate the energy potential of the green coconut shell through the briquettes production. Analyzes of the physic-chemical characteristics of the briquettes and of the in natura biomass were carried out. As a result, a calorific value of 13.6 MJ/kg was found for in natura biomass, for the briquettes, with binder water and starch, presented calorific value of 15.6 and 11.7 MJ/kg, respectively. The calorific value in the in natura biomass did not result in much lower values compared to the reference literature; however, its humidity and ash content were quite high. For the briquettes produced, these values are reduced and the calorific value is considered high and efficient if it is treated for purposes of heat generation. Thus, the potential for using bark residues as an alternative energy is verified, in addition to the socioeconomic and environmental advantages.

ABSTRACT

Plastics are produced from oil. These polymers persist in nature for long periods of time and, therefore, they are accumulated in large amounts of solid waste. The main objective of this research is to produce, on a laboratory scale, a bioplastic from the fiber contained in the coconut shell, which can serve as raw material for the production of biodegradable products.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of the research was to optimize technology for producing a magneto controllable nanocomposite Ag@Fe3O4 with modern physicochemical and therapeutic requirements using methods of mathematical design of the experiment. Methods: To optimize the synthesis process of the nanocomposite Ag@Fe3O4, the method of factor experiment was used. Mathematical calculations were performed using the STATISTICA 10 StatSoft Inc. system and Excel spreadsheet processor of MS Office 2019 Professional Plus. Results: Based on the study of technological parameters of nanocomposite synthesis Ag@Fe3O4 (16 experiments) a regression equation was obtained: Y = 106.415+0.038X1+4.448Х2+1.806Х3–1.593Х4–18.945Х5–109.980Х6. By the use of this equation the synthesis parameters were optimized with the help of steepest ascent method. It was found that the maximum yield of Ag@Fe3O4 can be achieved under the following conditions: X1 (magnetite synthesis time, min)–40; X2 (glucose content in solution,%)–10; X3 (temperature of the Tollens reaction, °С)–65; X4 (magnetite silver coating time, min)–30; X5 (pH, units)–8.5; X6 (rate of addition of ammonia, mol/min)–0.36. Conclusion: Using mathematical design of the experiment, a technology was developed for producing Ag@Fe3O4 with modern physicochemical and therapeutic requirements.

ABSTRACT

Malignant tumor has become an urgent threat to global public healthcare. Because of the heterogeneity of tumor, single therapy presents great limitations while synergistic therapy is arousing much attention, which shows desperate need of intelligent carrier for co-delivery. A core‒shell dual metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) system was delicately designed in this study, which not only possessed the unique properties of both materials, but also provided two individual specific functional zones for co-drug delivery. Photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) and chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) were stepwisely encapsulated into the nanopores of MIL-88 core and ZIF-8 shell to construct a synergistic photothermal/photodynamic/chemotherapy nanoplatform. Except for efficient drug delivery, the MIL-88 could be functioned as a nanomotor to convert the excessive hydrogen peroxide at tumor microenvironment into adequate oxygen for photodynamic therapy. The DOX release from MIL-88-ICG@ZIF-8-DOX nanoparticles was triggered at tumor acidic microenvironment and further accelerated by near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. The
