ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the treatment effect of recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor (rb-bFGF) in patients with gingivitis and its influence on gingival sulcus bleeding index. Methods Sixty-eight patients with gingivitis treated in our hospital were randomly divided into control group (34 cases) and observation group (34 cases). The control group were given basic periodontal therapy, while the observation group were treated with rb-bFGF. The clinical effects, gingival sulcus bleeding index (SBI) before and after treatment, and the recurrence were compared between the two groups. Results After treatment, the total effective rate (97.06%) of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (70.59%), the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The SBI of the observation group was significantly lower than that of the control group at 1 and 2 weeks after treatment (P<0.05). The recurrence rate of the observation group (5.88%) was significantly lower than that of the control group (23.53%) (P<0.05). The incidence of complications such as pain, periodontal abscess, bromopnea and loosening was significantly lower in the observation group (8.82%) than in the control group (32.35%). The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion After rb-bFGF treatment, the symptoms of toothache and gingival swelling disappear, normal function of teeth is restored, gingival sulcus bleeding improves significantly, with fewer adverse reactions and obvious clinical effect.

ABSTRACT

The indigenous people of the community of Pykasu of the Paraguayan Chaco (ethnicgroup Guaraní Ñandeva) have no access to oral health problems due to distance and roadconditions. This descriptive cross-sectional observational study aimed to determine the oralhealth status and diet of 57 children in this community between 3 and 13 years, using DMFsand DMFT indices, OHI-S and Mühlemann Groove bleeding rate. The average of the DMFs inthe deciduous dentition was high (5), in the mixed dentition DMFs values were moderate(3.5) and DMFT low (1.6) while DMFT values were moderate in the permanent one (3.6)according to the scale of the WHO. In relation to OHI-S scale, the majority of subjects(65%) has an index value considered to be regular. The majority of the population (94.8%)presented hemorrhage on probing greater than 10% of the surfaces of the probed teeth. The diet was balanced and the consumption of sugars and starches refined was littlefrequent, as well as consumption of fruits of the area with high fiber content like the carobtree which is consumed by 100% of the children, mostly more than 6 pods a day.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effects of silicone points polishing on plaque index(PI) and sulcus bleeding index(SBI) after ultrasonic scaling. Forty patients with periodontal diseases were selected for ultrasonic scaling. After scaling, unilateral teeth were randomly assigned for silicone points polishing. PI and SBI were used to evaluate the effects of silicone points polishing. Silicone points polishing significantly reduced PI 12 weeks after scaling. Both in the polishing group and the control group, SBI decreased after scaling. The SBI in the polishing group was significantly lower than that in the control group in the 24 weeks. Silicone points polishing can effectively increase the smoothness of tooth and enhance the effects of uhrosonic scaling.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In this study, we compared low-power CO2 laser treatment to ultrasonic scaling, which is generally approved as a power-driven mechanical instrumentation, and evaluated both of these treatments regarding their clinical effectiveness and change in the volume of in GCF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 20 patients who had gingivitis were selected. all of patients has no systemic problems. Randomly selected, one quadrant received ultrasonic scaling only, another quadrant received ultrasonic scaling and CO2 laser irradiation, the other quadrant received CO2 laser irradiation only. Clinical parameters measured at baseline, 1 weeks, 2weeks, 4weeks and 8weeks RESULT: Pocket probing depth and clinical attachment level were not changed during study period. Gingival index of all group were improved after treatment. At 1 weeks after treatment, Gingival index of ultrasonic scaling group was only significantly different compared to control group. At 2 weeks after treatment, gingival index of all experimental group were significantly different compared to control group. At 4 and 8 weeks after treatment, gingival index of all group were increased, but experimental group were lower than control group. Sulcus bleeding index was similar to the results of gingival index. At 1 weeks after treatment, all experimental group were significantly different compared to control group and it maintained during study. At 2 weeks after treatment, sulcus bleeding index of all group were lowest during study. Gingival crevicular fluid were measured with Periotron(R) 8000(Oraflow(R) , Inc. USA). At baseline, all group were showed moderately severe condition. At 1 week after treatment, laser treatment only group was reduced quantity of gingival crevicular fluid mostly, and all group were reduced quantity of gingival crevicular fluid. At 2 weeks after treatment, all group were healty state. At 4 and 8 weeks after treament, all group were showed recurrent of inflammation, and control group was the most significantly increased. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the effects of CO2 laser treatment were similar to conventional ultrasonic scaling and this result remained longer than plaque control only. These results suggest possibility of CO2 laser treatment for altered periodontal therapy.
