ABSTRACT

Based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF MS/MS),a post targeted screening strategy using high resolution mass spectrometry under data independent acquisition was established, and successfully applied to screen and identify unknown toxicants in food poisoning patients' vomit and feces. After solvent extraction, the samples were separated and analyzed on a reversed-phase C18column using a gradient elution program of 5 mmol/L ammonium formate and 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution(A) and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile solution (B).All-ions MS/MS information of samples was obtained using Q-TOF MS(ESI+) in MSE mode, followed by peak recognition and library searching using the UNIFI Scientific Information System,as a result, suspected toxic compound α-solanine was primarily detected.Furthermore, the related chemicals including hydrolysates and metabolites were identified in both samples based on post-targeted screening strategy, such as α-chaconine,β-chaconine,γ-solanine/chaconine and solanidine. The concentration of α-solanine in both samples was approximately 0.1 mg/kg by one-point calibration method, the total amount of solanine analogues in two samples was about 0.5 mg/kg and 0.6 mg/kg respectively through normalization of peak area. The high resolution mass spectrometry screening strategy established here could provide efficient screening method for rapid detection and identification of toxicants in unknown food poisoning.

ABSTRACT

In the early 1950s,China′s modern industry and national defense developed rapidly. While toxicological research, represented by occupational toxicology, radiological toxicology and military toxicology, was initiated. Along with the expansion of industrial and agricultural activities and production, high- speed economic development, and the changes of the environment and lifestyles, the objects and content of toxicological research have also been expanded. Subdisciplines of toxicology have kept emerging, and an integrated toxicological discipline and research system has been established. Toxi?cological research has become an active area in China. Toxicological publications from China have accounted for about 10% to 20% of total international toxicological research papers in the recent ten years. Toxicologists in China have paid much attention to the toxicities and biological safety of new materials and emerging pollutants, such as nanomaterials and fine particles in the air. Some toxicological research was discussed in this paper.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: Male reproductive function in the general population has been receiving attention in recent years due to reports of various reproductive and developmental defects, which might be associated with various lifestyle and environmental factors. This study was carried out to determine the role of various lifestyle and environmental factors in male reproduction and their possible association with declining semen quality, increased oxidative stress as well as sperm DNA damage. Methods: Semen samples were obtained from 240 male partners of the couples consulting for infertility problem. Semen analysis was carried out using WHO criteria and subjects were categorized on the basis of self reported history of lifestyle as well as environmental exposure. The oxidative and antioxidant markers; lipid peroxidation (LPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) as well as DNA damage by acridine orange test (AO) were determined. Results: The presence of abnormal semen parameters was significantly higher among the lifestyle and/or environmental exposed subjects as compared to the non-exposed population. Further, the levels of antioxidants were reduced and sperm DNA damage was more among the lifestyle and/or environmental exposed subjects, though the changes were not significant. Interpretation & conclusions: These findings indicated that various lifestyle factors such as tobacco smoking, chewing and alcohol use as well as exposure to toxic agents might be attributed to the risk of declining semen quality and increase in oxidative stress and sperm DNA damage.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the hepatoprotective effect of ethylacetate extract of tomatoes and methanol extract of onions on the biochemical changes induced by feed formulated with 15% roasted beef and 85% rats pellets. Doses of 500 mg/kg body weight of both extracts were administered orally. The hepatic activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine amino-transferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were examined, also concentrations of total protein, albumin and globulin were monitored in the animals. The effects of feeding and treatment on oxidative stress parameters (CAT, SOD, GPx, Glutathione and MDA) were determined. The changes observed were discussed.

ABSTRACT

In this review, we have provided an overview of the environmental risk factors for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), focusing on the major environmental toxicants related to the disorder. Researchers have indicated that since the characteristics of ADHD are complex, the disorder's etiology involves multiple genes of moderate effect interacting with environmental factors. The possible roles of prenatal and perinatal exposure have been the main focus of research on environmental risk factors for ADHD. Among environmental toxicants, we reviewed the potential effects on the development of ADHD of exposure to lead, nicotine, alcohol, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dioxin. Further, for the each neurotoxicant, clinical prevention or intervention strategies aimed at reducing a child's risk from environmental toxic insults have been presented.

ABSTRACT

Environmental pollutants have a significant impact on the ecosystem and disrupt balance between environment, human and non-human components that result in deleterious effects to all forms of life. Identifying environmental factors for potential imbalance are extremely crucial for devising strategies for combating such toxic dysregulation. Automobile exhaust (in air), heavy metals (in food and water) and pesticides (in air, food, soil and water) are the most common environmental pollutants and their short and long term exposures can cause hazardous effects in humans leading to systemic disorders involving lungs, kidney and immune systems. Mechanisms involved in genesis of such toxic effects have revealed complex, interactive pathways. Strategies for the protection of homeostasis and health, viz., general preventive measures, nutritional supplements and herbal agents have been described, to counter these pollutants induced damaging effects on various body systems.

ABSTRACT

With the development of immunoassay and sensing technologies and the solid waste compost technologies being paid more and more attention, the method of immunosensor can’t be interfered by some interference factors of the commonly used analytical methods,it is of great significance to apply the immunosensor technologies in monitoring, and real-time,online measurement during compost process. The working mechanism and classification of immunosensor are briefly introduced, and the components of the complex compost system are divided into solid phase, liquid phase and gas phase. The development and application of immunosensor in compost is introduced. The latest progress in immunosensor for determination of trace toxicants is reviewed. The application of immunosensor in environmental monitoring and its future development are also discussed.
