ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the perception and degree of satisfaction of blind individuals regarding an electronic cane prototype with a wearable haptic interface. Methods: Two scenarios with different obstacles were created to conduct tests with the canes (the user's cane and the prototype one). The perception and satisfaction of participants regarding the electronic cane were assessed using a questionnaire, the number of collisions during the tests, and the time each individual took to complete the course in each scenario. Results: Ten blind individuals who used the white cane participated in this study. Eight were males, and two were females. Their age ranged from 23 to 43 (average 32.3 ± 7.13 years and median 32 years). There was a tendency for fewer collisions with ground obstacles when the electronic cane was used than when the white cane was used. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the number of collisions and the course completion time in each scenario with either canes tested. Conclusion: Overall, the perception and satisfaction of individuals regarding the prototype used were positive.

ABSTRACT

This article describes user access and perception of access to specialized HIV/AIDS services in Bahia municipalities by applying a qualitative epidemiological, descriptive-analytical approach to primary data from research conducted in five services located in the capital and eight in the countryside. A total of 475 users from 21 municipalities in Bahia participated in this study. Most were female, between 25 and 44 years old, Black, Christian, unemployed, with complete primary education, income of up to 3 minimum wages, heterosexual and cisgender. Access to HIV testing and other STIs, post-exposure and pre-exposure prophylaxis and other prevention inputs did not constitute motivation for procuring the service. Specific treatment and medical care for HIV and other STIs motivated most participants to turn to specialized services. Commuting to the reference service is made mainly by public transport and the home-service journey takes at least one hour. The unit's opening hours meet the needs of most participants, but some mentioned the desire for alternative operating times. Appointments are booked mainly in person and over the phone, with the possibility of daily scheduling, so most users rated the service organization for scheduling appointments as good or very good. The most common waiting time between booking and consultation is one week to one month.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Urethral stricture is a common, albeit complex, condition that predominantly affects men. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Patient-Reported Outcome Measure questionnaire for patients undergoing urethroplasty (USS-PROM) into Brazilian Portuguese using validated psychometric criteria. Materials and Methods: The process involved translating and culturally adapting the original USS-PROM into Brazilian Portuguese (USS-PROMbr), synthesizing, back-translating, cross-culturally adapting, and analyzing the pre-final version with experts from our committee. This pre-version was administered to 10 patients who had undergone urethroplasty by the Reconstructive Urology team at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre for face validation, linguistic, and semantic adjustments, resulting in the final USS-PROMbr version. Subsequently, well-established psychometric criteria, including content validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reproducibility, were assessed after administering the questionnaire to a total of 56 patients, with 50 of them responding to the test and retest. Results: Evaluation of the pre-final version identified 15 questions as clear, and only one question was considered somewhat unclear necessitating modifications based on patient suggestions and subsequent reassessment by the research team. Psychometric criteria demonstrated good content validity, with a content validity index exceeding 0.80 for all questions; good internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha of 0.77, ranging from 0.70 to 0.78 with the exclusion of any item, and item-total correlations ranging from 0.33 to 0.67. The test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.74 for the lower urinary tract symptoms construct (Q1-Q6). Conclusion: The USS-PROMbr demonstrated acceptable cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties, making it a valid and useful tool for evaluating patients undergoing urethroplasty.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the clinical efficacy of ultrasound-guided superior laryngeal nerve block combined with cricothyroid membrane puncture for awake tracheal intubation in difficult airways. Methods:A total of 80 patients scheduled for general anesthesia surgery owing to difficult airways at Marine Police Corps Hospital of Chinese People's Armed Police Force from August 2019 to February 2023 were included in this prospective study. These patients were randomly divided into a control group and an observation group ( n = 40 per group). Both groups of patients underwent fiberoptic bronchoscope-guided awake tracheal intubation through the nasal route. Before intubation, the control group received surface anesthesia combined with cricothyroid membrane puncture anesthesia, while the observation group received superior laryngeal nerve block combined with cricothyroid membrane puncture anesthesia. During the intubation process, hemodynamic indicators of the patients were monitored, the duration of the intubation operation was recorded, and the degree of sedation and cough response was evaluated. Before and after intubation, the levels of serum stress response factors were determined, and the satisfaction level of patients with the intubation operation was investigated. Results:At the time points T1 (immediately after the tracheal tube enters the glottis) and T2 (after the tracheal tube enters the trachea), the heart rate in the observation group was (84.08 ± 8.25) times/minute and (82.64 ± 7.81) times/minute, respectively, and the mean arterial pressure in the observation group was (92.57 ± 8.32) mmHg (1 mmHg = 0.133 kPa) and (103.27 ± 9.16) mmHg, respectively, which were significantly lower compared with those in the control group ( t = 5.92-12.56, all P < 0.001). At T1 and T2, there was no significant difference in blood oxygen saturation (SpO 2) between the observation and control groups ( t = 0.34-0.43, P = 0.652-0.726). The duration of the intubation operation in the observation group was (8.96 ± 1.15) minutes, which was significantly shorter than (11.47 ± 1.39) minutes in the control group ( t = 6.84, P < 0.001). The Ramsay sedation score during intubation in the observation group was 3 (2,3) points, which was significantly higher than 2 (1,3) points in the control group ( Z = 9.26, P < 0.001). The cough response score in the observation group was 1 (0,1) point, which was significantly lower than 1 (0, 2) points in the control group ( Z = 4.37, P < 0.001). The serum levels of stress response factors norepinephrine and adrenaline in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group ( t = 14.58-25.94, both P < 0.05). The overall patient satisfaction in the observation group was 97.50%, which was significantly higher than that in the control group ( χ2 = 4.51, P = 0.034). Conclusion:Superior laryngeal nerve block combined with cricothyroid membrane puncture can be used for anesthetic management of awake nasal tracheal intubation in difficult airways. This combined approach can improve patient hemodynamic stability and sedation, shorten the duration of intubation, reduce stress responses during intubation, and enhance patient satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of five-element music therapy combined with meridian-based acupoint massage timed according to qi circulationon on negative emotions and sleep quality in older adults with chronic heart failure. Methods:A total of 112 older adult patients with chronic heart failure who received treatment at The Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University between January 2022 and June 2023 were included in this study. They were randomly divided into a control group ( n = 56) and a study group ( n = 56) using the random number table method. Based on conventional treatment, the control group received five-element music therapy, while the intervention group underwent a combination of five-element music therapy and meridian-based acupoint massage timed according to qi circulation. Before and after the intervention, a comparison was made between the two groups in terms of the scores of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and various dimensions of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). Additionally, the sleep outcome and patient satisfaction were also compared between the two groups. Results:After intervention, the scores of the HAMA and HAMD in the study group were (11.29 ± 2.48) points and (12.48 ± 3.36) points, respectively. In contrast, the control group had scores of (15.93 ± 3.35) points and (16.50 ± 4.32) points, respectively. After intervention, the scores of the HAMA and HAMD scales in both the study and control groups demonstrated a significant reduction in comparison with their respective pre-intervention scores [study group: (20.13 ± 5.18) points, (23.95 ± 8.97) points, control group: (19.36 ± 5.45) points, (23.79 ± 7.61) points, t = 15.35, 10.24, 5.65, 8.93, all P < 0.001). After intervention, the scores of the HAMA and HAMD scales in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group ( t = -8.34, -5.49, both P < 0.001). After intervention, the scores of the PSQI in the study and control groups were (7.05 ± 0.96) points and (9.91 ± 1.28) points, respectively. After intervention, the scores of PSQI in both the study and control groups demonstrated a significant reduction compared with their respective pre-intervention scores [study group: (12.98 ± 2.21) points, control group: (12.50 ± 2.48) points, t = 24.68, 9.79, both P < 0.05]. After intervention, the score of the PSQI in the study group was significantly lower than that in the control group ( t = 13.34, P < 0.05). Based on the scores across various dimensions of the MLHFQ, it was observed that after intervention, the scores of emotional, physical, and other domains in both the study and control groups [study group: (9.36 ± 2.29) points, (16.95 ± 3.80) points, (18.50 ± 2.33) points; control group: (12.93 ± 2.00) points, (19.98 ± 3.98) points, (20.04 ± 2.24) points] decreased significantly compared with their pre-intervention scores [study group: (15.57 ± 1.55) points, (26.23 ± 4.63) points, (21.18 ± 2.50) points, control group: (16.09 ± 1.87) points, (25.32 ± 4.40) points, (21.57 ± 2.69) points, t = 21.66, 18.55, 8.44, 11.29, 11.73, 4.61, all P < 0.001]. After intervention, the scores of emotional, physical, and other domains in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group ( t = -8.79, -4.13, -3.56, all P < 0.05). Patient satisfaction in the study group was superior to that that in the control group [98.21% (55/56) vs. 87.50% (49/56), χ2 = -3.09, P < 0.05]. Total effective rate of intervention on sleep in the study group was significantly higher than that in the control group [92.86% (52/56) vs. 78.57% (44/56), χ2 = -2.09, P < 0.05]. Conclusion:Five-element music therapy combined with meridian-based acupoint massage timed according to qi circulationon in the treatment of chronic heart failure in older adults can effectively alleviate negative emotions, improve the quality of life and sleep, and increase patient satisfaction with nursing care.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between women's personality traits and their fear of childbirth, birth satisfaction, and postpartum depression. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between April and August 2022 among healthy third-trimester pregnant women aged 18-49 years who applied to the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic of a state hospital. Data were collected by the researchers by face-to-face interview method in three stages. Participants were administered the Personal Information Form, the Five-Factor Personality Scale, and the Birth Anticipation/Experience Scale at the first interview; the Birth Satisfaction Scale on the 10th day after normal birth; and the Edinburg Postpartum Depression Scale 4 weeks after birth. RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between neurotic personality traits and fear of childbirth and postpartum depression, while there was a negative correlation with other personality traits (p<0.001). There was no significant relationship between birth satisfaction and personality traits (p>0.05). The effect of personality traits on fear of childbirth and postpartum depression was analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis. The regression model tested for the effect of personality traits on fear of childbirth and postpartum depression was found significant (p<0.001). According to the model, 26% of the variability in fear of childbirth and 9.1% of the variability in postpartum depression were explained by personality traits. CONCLUSION: This study showed that neuroticism, which is one of the personality traits of women, had a positive effect on fear of childbirth and postpartum depression. No significant relationship was found between birth satisfaction and personality traits.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the relationship between patients' and dentists' perceptions of shade selection and its impact on satisfaction with the prosthesis. Material and Methods: A single group pre-post study was conducted at the Prosthodontics department of a teaching hospital in India. One hundred ten participants were selected through a systematic random sampling technique with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients' attitudes regarding the aesthetics of their maxillary anterior teeth were recorded using a validated questionnaire. Shades for the intended prosthetic crown selected by the dentist and chosen by the patient were recorded separately, and patient satisfaction with the appearance of the final prosthesis was recorded. We used descriptive statistics followed by Pearson's Chi-square test and a binomial logistic regression model for inferential statistics. Results: 109 participant's data were available for final analysis. Patients choose lighter shades than the dentist's selection, which is statistically significant (p=0.000). 73.4% were satisfied with the final prosthesis, and the binomial logistic regression model identified using patient-selected shade for the final prosthesis was significantly associated with patients' satisfaction with the final prosthesis (OR=3.3, p=0.001). Conclusion: The patient's preference should be considered with the dentist's option when selecting a shade to create good esthetics.
