ABSTRACT
Aim: The main purpose of this study was to conduct a narrative review investigating the possible relationship between permanent maxillary anterior teeth and anthropometric facial parameters in different populations. Methods: Searches were performed in the PubMed, BVS (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde) and SciELO databases to identify relevant scientific articles using the following search terms: "maxillary anterior teeth", "facial measurements" and "anthropometry", in such a way that 218 publications were found. After application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 publications remained for full-text reading. Results: All studies involved male and female samples and it was notorious that male measurements were unanimously higher than those obtained in the opposite sex. The age of the analyzed participants ranged from 17 to 60 years; however, a mean age of 18 to 25 years was the most investigated in literature. In addition, facial measurements including the bizygomatic width, interpupillary distance, intercanthal distance, interalar width and intercommissural width have been proposed to help determine the correct size of anterior teeth. Conclusion: It was concluded that despite the limited number of studies, some factors that influence dental and facial dimensions, such as sex and age, can be identified. However, there is no standardization of the facial or dental parameters used in the studies, a fact that makes it difficult to establish a universal ratio for clinical dental practice

Although fluoride (F) is required for the normal growth and development of several human organs and tissues, excessive exposure to it may be potentially toxic. Groundwater may present ranging levels of F; however, the appearance, taste, and smell are not altered. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate dental fluorosis in children from a Brazilian slave-descendent community, as well as to assess F levels in the drinking water supplies available in that area. For that, 21 children aged from 6 to 14 years living in Rincão dos Martimianos were invited to participate. Thylstrup and Fejerskov index (a 09 scale) was used to assess dental fluorosis on permanent teeth. Furthermore, the F concentration of two water samples (from the artesian well and a tank) was determined by using a potentiometric method. All children presented dental fluorosis to some degree, ranging from score 2 to 9. About 81% of them had dental fluorosis scores equal to or over 5. Scores lower than 5 were observed only in children younger than 8 years; on the other hand, all children older than 8 years presented scores higher than 5. Moreover, artesian well water had an F concentration of 5 mg/L and tank water 0.8 mg/L. It is suggested that the F-rich groundwater supply was most probably responsible for dental fluorosis in that area. Brazilian slave-descendent communities, therefore, should receive constant attention from their local authorities in order to guarantee a proper water supply for consumption, as well as to provide public health education(AU)

Objective @#To study the effect of anterior traction on the temporomandibular joint in adolescent patients with skeletal Class Ⅲ malocclusion.@*Methods@#Twenty-nine patients with early permanent dentition with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions were measured by cephalometry and a coordinate system before and after maxillary protraction. The correlation between dentofacial structures and the temporomandibular joint was analyzed. @*Results @# After maxillary protraction, cephalometric measurements showed that the dentofacial structure changed significantly; ANB increased by 3.97° ± 2.32° (P<0.001); U1-SN increased by 4.97° ± 5.51° (P<0.001); L1-MP decreased by 1.26° ± 1.41° (P = 0.008); and MP-SN increased by 1.02° ± 3.90° (P = 0.003). The coordinate system measurement showed that the S-Fpx was decreased by 0.16 ± 1.52 mm (P = 0.041), the S-Ciy distance was significantly decreased by 0.09 ± 2.03 mm (P = 0.028), and there was no significant change in the temporomandibular joint spaces (A, P, and C) (P>0.05). Correlation analysis showed a moderate negative correlation between the posterior margin of the temporomandibular joint fossa and U1-SN (r = -0.427, P = 0.042). There was a moderate positive correlation between the leading edge of the condyle and ANB (r = 0.425, P = 0.043); there was no correlation between the joint space and dentofacial changes. @* Conclusion@#After treatment with maxillary protraction for adolescent skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion, maxillary protraction had some effect on changes in the temporomandibular joint fossa and condyle and had no effect on the joint space.
ABSTRACT
Objective: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) affect the aesthetics and function of primary teeth and can cause sequelae in their permanent successors. This study assessed the distribution of TDIs and sequelae in the primary dentition and the respective permanent dentition in children treated at the Dental Trauma Centre in Brazil. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting data from 256 dental records over 7 years. Descriptive statistical analyses and the Fisher exact test were used (p=0.05). Results: Sixty-two patients presented with trauma in the deciduous teeth. TDIs were observed mostly in boys (64.50%) and in the 2 to 4-year age group (44.10%); most injuries occurred from fall from the child's own height (40.30%) and at home (71.20%). The most common type of trauma was subluxation (22.90%). The most prevalent clinical and radiographic sequelae were mobility (45.60%) and periapical lesion (31.80%), respectively. Regarding the permanent dentition, the most frequent sequela was hypomineralization (33.30%). Conclusion:According to this study, TDIs in deciduous teeth made up 29.24% of all the cases in the Dental Trauma Program. The major type of trauma in children was subluxation, with sequelae in both dentitions. Follow-up after trauma is important to the maintenance of primary dentition and to prevent and treat possible sequelae in the permanent dentition.(AU)

Introduction: Dentoalveolar traumas affect a considerable portion of the population and occur due to several causes, such as falls, car accidents and physical aggressions. Lesions can range from simple enamel fractures to dental avulsion, and are associated with aesthetic, functional, psychological and social damage. Intrusive luxation, which, due to maximum damage to the periodontal and pulp tissues, have one of the worst prognoses and result in pulp necrosis in almost all cases of teeth with complete rhizogenesis. Possible treatments are based on root development and severity of lesion and include waiting for spontaneous re eruption, surgical repositioning, orthodontic traction and extraction of intruded tooth. The present study aims to report a clinical case exposing the late treatment of severe traumatic intrusion of the permanent upper central incisor. Case report: a 10-year-old female patient suffered a bucofacial trauma in 2009 and was attended to at an emergency service, however no dental care was provided, only in 2011 she sought specialized care at the dental clinic of the State University of Feira de Santana - BA. Final Considerations: The most appropriate conduct in the face of dentoalveolar traumatisms is urgent care, aiming to minimize sequelae to preserve the remaining tooth and adjacent structures... (AU)

Introduction: Caries is the most frequent oral disease and the first permanent molars are very susceptible to this condition because they are the first teeth to emerge. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of caries its associated factors in the first permanent molars in second grade primary school children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in second grade students in 17 out of 67primary public schools in Acapulco, Guerrero. We applied a self-administered questionnaire to obtain sociodemographic data and dental hygiene habits. Caries and the presence of dentobacterial plaque were measured through epidemiological indices, CPOD (decayed, blocked and lost tooth) and O'Leary index. The odds ratio and 95 percent confidence interval, adjusted by cluster, were estimated as a measure of strength of association through multivariate analysis. Results: We reviewed 3 332 permanent first molars, 21 percent had cavities, 6 percent had seals and 1 percent had already been removed. The CPOD index of group caries was 0,27. We found five factors associated with caries of the first permanent molars: deficient dental hygiene (RMa=2,87), inadequate tooth brushing technique (RMa=1,70), drinking a sweet drink before bedtime (RMa=1,68), visiting the dentist (RMa=0,67) and fluoride application (RMa=0,61). Conclusions: Prevalence of caries in the first permanent molars was 21 percent, within the range reported in other studies. Five factors associated with caries were identified: poor dental hygiene, inadequate brushing technique, consumption of sugars before going to sleep, visits to the dentist and application of fluoride. These factors guide what preventive measures should be promoted in schoolchildren for the preservation of their teeth(AU)

Abstract Objective To compare the effectiveness of ART restorations using High Viscosity Glass-ionomer cement (HVGIC) with conventional restorations using resin composite in Class II cavities of permanent teeth, in a 2-year follow-up. Methodology Seventy-seven restorations were made with each restorative material, Equia Fil-GC Corporation (ART restorations) and Z350-3M (conventional restoration), in 54 participants in this parallel and randomized clinical trial. Restorations were evaluated at 6 months, 1 and 2 years using the ART and the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Chi-square test and Survival Analysis (p<0.05) were used for statistical analysis. Results The success rates for ART restorations were 98.7% (6 months) and 95.8% (1 year) for both criteria. At 2 years, success rate was 92% and 90.3% when scored by the modified USPHS and ART criteria (p=0.466), respectively. The success rates for conventional restorations were 100% (6 months), 98.7% (1 year) and 91.5% (2 years) for both assessment criteria. ART restorations presented a lower survival rate by the criterion of ART (83.7%) when compared to the modified USPHS criterion of (87.8%), after 2 years (p=0.051). The survival of conventional restorations was 90.7% for both evaluation criteria. Conclusion At the 2-years follow-up evaluation, no statistically significant difference was observed between the success rate of ART restorations with HVGIC compared to conventional restorations with resin composite in Class II cavities of permanent teeth.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental enamel defect with multifactorial etiology. Although the relationship between celiac disease (CD) and developmental enamel defect was demonstrated, the association between CD and MIH is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze the occurrence of MIH in CD patients. METHODS: Forty CD patients and a control group with 40 healthy individuals were selected. A calibrated examiner (k≥0.889) according to the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry criteria performed the diagnosis of MIH. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Fischer's exact test (α=0.05). RESULTS: Of the 80 participants, ten presented MIH with eight individuals with CD. Celiac patients presented 4.75 times the chance of occurrence of MIH than the control group (95% CI: 2.22-10.18; P=0.044). In all the evaluated teeth (n=978), 22 had MIH: 20 teeth in individuals with CD and two in those without the disease. All CD participants with MIH presented the classic form of the disease. CD participants showed 17 teeth (85.0%) with demarcated opacities, two (10.0%) post-eruptive collapses and one (5.0%) atypical restoration. The control group presented only demarcated opacities. CONCLUSION: CD increased the chance of MIH and associated with its clinical manifestations can assist in the diagnosis of CD.

Supernumerary teeth are those teeth present in addition to the normal number of teeth and are mostfrequently seen in the maxillary incisors and molar regions. In the molar regions, supernumerary teethare divided into two types depending on their location: distomolars and paramolars. Distomolarsusually occur in the form of a fourth molar distal to the third molar. Distomolars are a developmentalanomaly and have been argued to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Therefore, distomolar management should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan. This articlepresents a case report of an unusual occurrence of a rare unilateral distomolar in the right of themaxilla with multiple abnormalities in a 21-year old healthy subject. In addition, a mini literaturereview includes the definition, types, prevalence, classification, etiology, complications, diagnosis, and therapeutic strategies, which may be adopted in the occurrence of distomolars.

ABSTRACT Pre-interruptive intracoronal resorption is a radiolucent lesion localized in dentin, immediately below the amelodentin junction of unerupted teeth. It is rare, asymptomatic, and of idiopathic etiology, generally diagnosed in routine radiographs or in those for orthodontic purposes. A conservative approach, with radiographic follow-up is the treatment recommended until the tooth erupts, and then the intervention is made. However, in cases with symptoms or progression of the lesion, surgical intervention is advisable. To report a case of pre-interruptive intracoronal resorption, with a conservative approach, showing the clinical and radiographic follow-up of this condition. The patient, a nine-year-old Caucasian girl, presented to the Dental Clinic for routine examination. An initial panoramic radiograph was requested, which showed an intracoronal radiolucence in tooth 45 that had not yet erupted. Clinical and radiographic follow-up was made until the affected tooth was completely established in the oral cavity. The treatment recommended for pre-interruptive intracoronal resorption is to have knowledge of the phenomenon, associate its probable etiology and radiographic aspect, as well as its prevalence, occurrence and treatment options, by considering a conservative approach when there are no symptoms.
ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the short and long-term spontaneous dentoalveolar changes of the mandibular dental arch after slow (SME) or rapid (RME) maxillary expansion in the mixed and early permanent dentitions. Methods: An electronic search was performed in the following databases: PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science. Eligibility criteria for article selection included randomized controlled trials and prospective studies written in English, with no restriction of year of publication, involving patients who underwent SME or RME during the mixed or early permanent dentitions. A double-blind search of articles was performed by two reviewers. Initially, the title and the abstract of the studies were read, and their references were also hand-searched for possible missing studies. A methodological quality scoring scale was used to analyze the selected articles. Results: The search retrieved 373 articles, but only 6 were selected for review after application of the eligibility and exclusion criteria. Non-clinically significant spontaneous dentoalveolar changes of approximately 1mm were found in the mandibular dental arch in the short and long-term, after slow or rapid maxillary expansions. Furthermore, no significant differences were found between treated and control groups. Conclusions: There is enough evidence to conclude that negligible short and long-term spontaneous dentoalveolar changes tend to occur in the mandibular dental arch after SME or RME in the mixed and early permanent dentitions. More randomized studies with appropriate control group are required to better evaluate this issue.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of Class II restorations through the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) technique, with additional retentions in the proximal boxes, in permanent teeth, using high viscosity glass ionomer cement (HVGIC), as compared to restorations of composite resin. An epidemiological examination was conducted in a larger and representative population of the participants of study. One hundred and thirty three participants, aged 8 to 28 years, with good general health with 1 to 2 class II cavities in permanent teeth without pulp involvement and tooth pain were included in this study, with was approved by the Ethics Committee under the number: CAAE: 24012913.0.1001.5417. Seventy-seven restorations were made with each restorative material (Equia Fil-GC Corporation and Z350-3M). Restorations were evaluated at 6, 12, and 24 months by the criteria of ART and the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS). Spearman Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression were performed between the variables tooth pain, visible plaque index (VPI), gingival bleeding index (GBI) and the CAST (The Caries Assessment Sprectrum and Treatment) and DMFT (Decayed, Missing and Filled teeth) obtained at the epidemiological survey using the Statistica program 7.1. As for restorative effectiveness, data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitnney, Chi-square, Fisher's Exact, Chi-square tests with linear trend and Logistic Regression by Enter method, where relevant (p<0.050). The Kaplan-Meier test evaluated the survival rates of the restorations in relation to the ART and modified USPHS criteria. The Log-Rank test compared the survival curves. From the CAST index (1.53; 2.17) it was possible to extract the DMFT (0.58; 1.32) which presented lower specificity and sensitivity in caries detection. The success rates for composite resin restorations were 100% (6 months), 98.7% (12 months) and 91.5% (24 months) for both assessment criteria and for ART restorations were the same for 6 months (98.7%) and 12 months (95.8%) and for 24 months were 92% when using the criteria of modified USPHS and 90.3% when using the criteria of ART, and no statistical difference was observed (p=0.466). The variables gender, locality, age, DMFT, VPI, GBI, toothache, occlusion, proximal contact, cavity size, anesthesia and cooperation of the participant did not present a statistical association with the success rates of the restorations (p>0.050). After 24 months, the VPI and GBI variables did not present a statistically significant odds ratio (OR) for ART restorations (p>0.050). ART restorations presented a lower survival rate by the criteria of ART (83.7%) when compared to the criteria of USPHS modified (87.8%), after 24 months (p=0.051). The survival of composite resin restorations was 90.7% for both evaluation criteria. It was concluded that there is no difference in the success rate of class II restorations of ART with HVGIC, in permanent teeth, with proximal retention grooves, compared to class II resin composite restorations, after 24 months.(AU)

Fusion is a rare developmental anomaly. Th e prevalence ranges from 0.5% to 5% based on geographic, racial, or genetic factors, which occur as a result of physical force or pressure leading to prolonged contact of the adjacent tooth follicles thus resulting in the fusion of tooth buds. Bilateral fusion of teeth has been reported to be very rare as compared to unilateral fusion which is around 0.05%. Although asymptomatic, they can be a predisposing factor for caries and cause periodontal problems due to malalignment in the arch. Th e aim of this article is to present a rare case of bilateral fusion of mandibular anterior teeth and discuss the possible histogenetic mechanism and future treatment prospectives.
ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the pattern of dental caries in a high-risk group of Korean adolescents. METHODS: Raw data on 10,542 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 years from the 2012 Korean National Oral Health Survey was used. The subjects were divided into a high caries risk group and non-high caries risk group for analysis. For the statistical analyses, we utilized a frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and a multidimensional scaling analysis. RESULTS: The pattern of dental caries in the high caries risk group were divided into six classifications for 12-year-olds and five for 15-year-olds, including the mandibular first molar occlusal surface (Cluster 1). In the high caries risk group, the frequency of Cluster 1 was approximately 4-times higher in 12-year-olds than that in the non-high caries risk group of Cluster 1, and about 3-times higher in 15-year-olds. The multidimensional scaling analysis found that in the high caries risk group, the same types of tooth surfaces formed separate groups. The prevalent dental caries pattern of 12-year-olds in the high caries risk group was left-right symmetry, while in the 15-year-olds of the high caries risk group, the caries pattern also included the antagonistic teeth, along with left-right symmetry. However, the non-high caries risk group had a pattern of left-right symmetry only in the 15-year-olds. CONCLUSIONS: When dental caries occur in the first molar, there is a high possibility of being classified into the high caries risk group. Therefore, preventative measures should focus on the antagonistic teeth and the teeth on the opposite side.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 29 plaster cast of the lower arch that presented a degree of crowding was carried out, which belonged to patients admitted in the Orthodontics Department of "Mártires del Moncada" Teaching Provincial Stomatological Clinic in Santiago de Cuba, from October to December, 2013, in order to determine the correspondence among the clinical and Moyers-Jenkins methods for the evaluation of dental crowding. Among the analyzed variables there were: methods of evaluation of crowding, teething type and degree of dental crowding. When analyzing the 2 methods those affected with severe discrepancy prevailed; however, most of those that were evaluated as slight discrepancy by the first method were without discrepancy when applying the second one. Higher precision existed between both methods in the moderated and severe discrepancies.
