ABSTRACT

Maintaining the continuity of the 'self' is crucial for finding meaning and ensuring psychological well-being. However, the traumatic encounter with cancer disrupts the normal flow of life stories, challenging coherence. Beyond its physical toll, cancer challenges one's sense of self, identity and overall psychological resilience. As personal narratives unfold, encompassing evolving life stories from one's reconstructed past to the present and envisioned future, inherently reflecting the dynamic conception of self, it becomes imperative to investigate how these narratives shape self-concept and resilience throughout the intricate emotional and psychological landscape of the cancer journey. This narrative review explores the intricate relationship among personal narratives, self-concept and psychological resilience in the context of cancer. The study draws on various theoretical constructs, encompassing self-concept, coping, narrative identity, and psychological resilience theories, to provide a comprehensive exploration of the psychological processes involved. Incorporating insights from both Western and Indian philosophical traditions, the review not only enriches the theoretical framework but also emphasizes the practical implications for healthcare practices. Integrating narrative resilience principles into medical education and advocating for culturally sensitive approaches are deemed essential for advancing patient-centred care. The study underscores both practical and theoretical contributions to psycho-oncology, emphasizing the need for personalized narrative interventions, empathetic healthcare strategies, longitudinal studies and innovative technologies that recognize and support the intricate interplay between personal narratives, self-concept and psychological resilience in the cancer survivorship journey.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Emotional resilience skills involve the regulation of stress, anxiety, fear, anger, and irritability; intentional impulse resistance; and the maintenance of a positive attitude towards oneself and difficult surrounding circumstances. The aim of this study is to assess the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the resilience subscale of the BESSI-45. The BESSI-45 was administered to 625 adolescents from three different regions of Peru. The resilience subscale was evaluated in terms of norms, internal consistency, factorial structure, factorial invariance, and Item Response Theory (IRT)-based characteristics. Internal consistency was adequate (omega = 0.8243), the factor analysis showed a unidimensional structure with good fit indices, and factorial invariance was demonstrated across gender and geographic region. The discrimination ability according to IRT was satisfactory for all items. The most important items were three related to anger control and impulsivity. In the study sample of Peruvian adolescents, the resilience subscale of the BESSI-45 shows adequate psychometric characteristics based on its factorial structure, internal consistency and IRT.

ABSTRACT

Background The staff in centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) were at a great risk for psychological distress when they were faced with outbreak-related prevention and control work and routine tasks during the COVID-19 period. Psychological resilience and burnout are two key influencing factors on psychological distress. Objective To explore the status and mechanisms of psychological resilience, burnout, and psychological distress among CDC staff. Methods From September to October 2022, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in all CDC staff in Beijing, and 2228 CDC staff from 17 units (including 1 municipality-level CDC and 16 district-level CDCs) participated the questionnaire survey. The basic information questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10) Chinese version, Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) Chinese version, and the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (Kessler10) Chinese version were selected in our study. Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis H test was used to analyze the differences in the scores of psychological resilience, burnout, and psychological distress by demographic and sociological characteristics. The correlations among the three elements were analyzed by Spearman correlation analysis. Potential influencing factors of psychological distress of the CDC staff were evaluated by multiple linear regression. A potential mediating effect of psychological resilience-burnout-psychological distress was analyzed by the mediation package of R 4.2.0, and validated by Bootstrap method. Results Of 2228 questionnaires distributed, 2022 valid questionnaires were collected, and the recovery rate was 90.75%. The median (P25, P75) psychological distress score of CDC staff was 13.00 (8.00, 24.00), and the number of participants with psychological distress levels of 1, 2, 3, and 4 was 358 (17.71%), 546 (27.00%), 362 (17.90%), and 756 (37.39%), respectively. The median (P25, P75) psychological resilience score was 24.00 (20.00, 30.00) and the median (P25, P75) burnout score was 38.00 (25.00, 50.00). The results of the multiple linear regression showed that psychological resilience, burnout, caring for the elderly, having a chronic disease, and monthly income had independent influences on psychological distress (P<0.05), and emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced personal accomplishment (reversed) in the case of burnout had a great effect on psychological distress (P<0.05). After controlling general demographic characteristic variables, total burnout score exerted a partial mediation effect on the relationship between psychological resilience and psychological distress, with a mediation effect value of −0.439 (95%CI: −0.483, −0.397), and a total mediation effect contribution rate of 60.89%. The two dimensions of burnout (emotional exhaustion and cynicism) played a partial mediating role between psychological resilience and psychological distress, with mediating effect contribution rates of 42.44% and 41.41%, respectively. Conclusion Psychological distress among CDC staff in Beijing was prominent during COVID-19. Psychological resilience can act directly on psychological distress or indirectly on psychological distress through burnout. Both emotional exhaustion and cynicism dimensions of burnout have a partial mediating role between psychological resilience and psychological distress. Increasing psychological resilience and decreasing burnout may reduce the occurrence of psychological distress.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the relationship between psychologicalresilience and irrational parenthood cognition and fertility life quality in female patients with in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, and to analyze the mediating effect of psychological resilience on irrational parenthood cognition and fertility life quality, so as to provide guidance for infertility patients to improve their psychological resilience and fertility life quality. Methods:A cross-sectional study method was used to conveniently sample 460 female patients with in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer who were admitted to the Women′s Hospital, School of Medicine Zhejiang University from October 2022 to April 2023.General data questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Irrational Parenthood Cognitions Questionnaire and the Fertility Quality of Life were used for investigation. Results:A total of 449 valid questionnaires were retrieved. Patients aged (33.31 ± 4.99) years old. The total scores of irrational parenthood cognition, psychological resilience and the fertility quality of life were (38.73 ± 9.31), (63.19 ± 15.40) and (68.18 ± 11.89) points respectively for female patients with IVF-ET. The total score of irrational parenthood cognition was negatively correlated with the total score of fertility quality of life ( r = - 0.513, P<0.01), and the total score of psychological resilience was positively correlated with the total score of fertility quality of life ( r = 0.424, P<0.01). Pychological resilience played a partial mediating role between irrational parenthood cognition and fertility life quality, with the mediating effect accounting for 28.01% of the total effect. Conclusions:The irrational parenthood cognition of female patients with IVF-ET is at a medium level, and the psychological resilience and the fertility quality of life are at a low level. The irrational parenthood cognition has a direct negative predictive effect on the fertility life quality of patients, while the psychological resilience is a positive predictor of fertility life quality. Irrational parenthood cognition can directly or indirectly affect patients′ fertility life quality through psychological resilience. Clinical medical staff should take effective measures to reduce patients′ irrational parenthood cognition level and improve their psychological resilience, so as to improve patients′ fertility life quality.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundDepressive disorders are prevalence among adolescents, with a higher incidence in females compared to males, often accompanied by more severe depressive symptoms. Sertraline is commonly prescribed for adolescent depressive disorder, however, its efficacy is only evident in certain patients. Currently, there is limited research on predicting the therapeutic efficacy of sertraline in female adolescents with depressive disorder. ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between personality traits, psychological resilience, coping style and the clinical efficacy of sertraline treatment in female adolescents with first-episode depressive disorder, in order to provide references for the treatment of this population. MethodsA total of 112 female adolescent patients with first-episode depressive disorder, meeting the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Diseases (tenth edition) (ICD-10), and undergoing a 4-week treatment regimen with sertraline, were selected from the Second People's Hospital of Guizhou Province from February 2019 to January 2021.General demographic questionnaire, NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), Resilience Scale for Chinese Adolescents (RSCA), Coping Style Scale for Middle School Students (CSSMSS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale-17 item (HAMD-17) were used for assessment. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the factors influencing the clinical efficacy of sertraline in the treatment of female adolescents with first-episode depressive disorder. ResultsNeuroticism (β=-0.115, 95% CI: 0.807~0.984) could negatively predicted the therapeutic efficacy of sertraline in female adolescents with first-episode depressive disorder, whereas agreeableness (β=0.129, 95% CI: 1.025~1.264) and RSCA score (β=0.062, 95% CI: 1.004~1.128) could positively predict its therapeutic efficacy. ConclusionHigh neuroticism, low agreeableness and low psychological resilience may be the risk factors for the poor therapeutic effect of sertraline in the treatment of female adolescents with first-episode depressive disorder. ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory, chronic and autoimmune disease that causes joint damage and can lead to physical disability. Patients with chronic and debilitating diseases such as arthritis need to adapt to the new reality. These changes may have less impact on patients with greater self-efficacy and resilience. Psychosocial factors influence the quality of life (QoL) of these patients, so the aim of this study was to assess resilience in this population and its relationship with pain, functional capacity and disease activity. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study carried out with patients at a medical specialties clinic, using a sociodemographic, a clinical-laboratory, a health assessment, a disease activity score questionnaires and the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale. The data was analyzed using Fisher's Exact, Chi-square, Student's t and ANOVA tests. RESULTS: 120 patients participated in the study, 89.2% female, mean age 56.9 ± 10.7 years. Pain was classified as severe by 40.8%, 65.8% had disease in remission and 50.8% had mild disability. The resilience of 49.2% was high. There was an association between lower resilience and: presence of painful joints (p=0.004) and greater pain intensity (p=0.014). There was a lower average of resilience (130.95) in participants with severe disability. CONCLUSION: Patients with less resilient rheumatoid arthritis had greater functional disability, painful joints and greater pain intensity. In addition, from the moment additional measures are adopted, such as educational actions and behavioral strategies, with an emphasis on resilience, which help in the control and clinical outcome of the disease, there will certainly be a positive impact on the quality of life of these patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the positive and negative affect of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), explore the effect of social support, self-efficacy and psychological resilience on positive and negative affect and relationships among these factors, and provide reference for improving the emotional health of SLE patients. Methods:This was a cross-sectional survey. From February to May 2021, 142 SLE patients attending the outpatient clinic of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology of West China Hospital, Sichuan University were selected by convenience sampling. Participants were investigated by the general information questionnaire, Perceived Social Support Scale, General Self-efficacy Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. And path analysis was performed to analyze the effect of social support, self-efficacy and psychological resilience on positive and negative affect. Results:A total of 127 valid questionnaires were collected, with an effective response rate of 89.44%. The positive and negative affect scores of 127 SLE patients were (28.09±7.31) and (25.83±8.10) points. And the positive rate (ratio of positive to negative affect) was 1.09; positive affect was positively correlated with social support, self-efficacy and psychological resilience ( r=0.412, 0.448, 0.533, all P<0.01), and negative affect was negatively associated with social support, self-efficacy and psychological resilience ( r=-0.313, -0.239, -0.382, all P<0.01); the results of the path analysis showed that the standardized total effects of social support, self-efficacy and psychological resilience on positive and negative affect in SLE patients were 0.341, 0.313, 0.632 and -0.237, -0.218, -0.439, respectively. There were significant mediating effects between social support and positive and negative affect (95% CI 0.035 -0.111, -0.087- -0.026) mediated by self-efficacy and psychological resilience. Social support could affect positive and negative affect through psychological resilience ( β=0.104, -0.080, both P<0.01) and through self-efficacy and psychological resilience ( β=0.065, -0.050, both P<0.01). Conclusions:Social support, self-efficacy and psychological resilience are the primary factors influencing positive and negative affect in SLE patients. Increasing social support to encourage patients to take social participation more actively and improving the self-efficacy as well as psychological resilience are ought to do for promoting their emotional health.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the mediating effect of psychological resilience on self-efficacy and knee functional recovery of patients after artificial total knee arthroplasty, and to provide theoretical basis for promoting functional recovery after artificial total knee arthroplasty. Methods:This was a cross-sectional survey study. A total of 250 patients undergoing artificial total knee arthroplasty at the Orthopedics Department of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University were set as the research objects from September 2021 to March 2022, self-designed demographic questionnaire, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) scale were used to evaluate postoperative self-efficacy, psychological reselience and knee function. Results:A total of 225 valid questionnaires were recovered. The GSES score, CD-RISC score and knee function score of 225 patients were (26.45 ± 3.75), (68.01 ± 2.85) and (71.76 ± 4.53) points, respectively. Psychological resilience was positively correlated with self-efficacy and knee function score ( r=0.535, 0.675, both P<0.05), and self-efficacy was positively correlated with knee function score ( r=0.688, both P<0.05). Stratified regression analysis in showed that self-efficacy, tenacity, strength, optimism, and psychological resilience were included in the equation, adjusted for R2=0.812, indicating good fit of the model. The mediation model showed that psychological resilience was partially mediated between self-efficacy and functional recovery, with its mediation effects accounting for 25.49% of the total effect. Conclusions:The recovery of knee function in patients after artificial total knee arthroplasty is at a moderate level, and improving psychological resilience and self-efficacy may probably promote the recovery of knee function.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To assess the levels of self-compassion, psychological resilience, and academic adjustment of undergraduate students in a military medical university, and analyze their influencing factors and interactions. Methods:A total of 341 undergraduate students were selected by convenience and purposive sampling in a military medical university from April to May, 2022 for surveys with the General Information Questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Self-Compassion Scale, the Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Academic Adjustment Scale for College Students. The collected data were analyzed through univariable analysis and multiple linear regression analysis to determine the influencing factors. AMOS 23.0 was used for path analysis. Results:The scores of self-compassion, psychological resilience, and academic adjustment of the students were at slightly high levels, with a significant positive correlation between one and another ( r s=0.580-0.611, all P<0.001). The influencing factors included professional identity, the level of received support, grade, time spent in student clubs, and the plan of postgraduate study (all P<0.05). The standardized direct effect of self-compassion on academic adjustment was 0.285 ( P=0.001), and the sum of the standardized mediating effects of psychological resilience and professional identity on self-compassion and academic adjustment was 0.314 ( P=0.001). The total mediating effect accounted for 52.42% of the total effect. Conclusions:The levels of self-compassion, psychological resilience, and academic adjustment of undergraduate students in the military medical university are influenced by multiple factors. Relevant departments should pay attention to specific populations and take targeted measures to increase the students' self-compassion, psychological resilience, and academic adjustment.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundThe mental health level of the prison police is relatively low, so finding innovative ways to improve the mental health of them is of great significance for the safety of prison supervision and the implementation of peaceful China initiative. ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between perceived social support, perceived stress and psychological resilience with mental health of prison police, and to provide references for improving their mental health. MethodsIn March 2022, 424 policemen working in a male prison in a western province were selected by cluster sampling method, and investigated with the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and General Health Questionnaire 20 (GHQ-20), then Process 4.2 was used employed to verify the mediating role of perceived stress as well as the moderating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between perceived social support and mental health. Results①Male subjects scored higher on GHQ-20 than female subjects (t=2.095, P<0.05). ②CPSS score was negatively correlated with PSSS and GHQ-20 scores (r=-0.670, -0.703, P<0.01), and GHQ-20 score showed a positive correlation with PSSS and CD-RISC scores (r=0.580, 0.693, P<0.01). ③Perceived social support positively predict mental health (β=0.154, 95% CI: 0.133~0.175, P<0.01). ④Perceived stress played a mediating role in the relationship between perceived social support and mental health, and the mediation effect size was 0.087, accounting for 88.78% of the total effect (95% CI: 0.064~0.112, P<0.01). ⑤Psychological resilience played a moderating role in the second half (perceived stress→mental health) of the mediating path of "perceived social support→perceived stress→mental health"(β=0.074, 95% CI: 0.046~0.102, P<0.01). ⑥Psychological resilience also regulated the mediation effect of perceived stress on the relationship between perceived social support and mental health [three regression coefficients tested in turn are significant: a=-0.537 (95% CI: -0.594~-0.480, P<0.01), b1=-0.162 (95% CI: -0.197~-0.127, P<0.01), b3=0.074 (95% CI: 0.046~0.102, P<0.01)]. ConclusionPerceived social support of prison police has an impact on their mental health both directly and indirectly through perceived stress. In addition, perceived social support of prison police has a moderated mediation effect on mental health, and it is partially moderated by psychological resilience.[ Funded by General Project of Sichuan Prison Administrative Bureau in 2022]

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo sort out and analyze the research progress of adolescent psychological resilience, and to grasp the research hotspots and frontiers in this field. MethodsCiteSpace was used to make a visual analysis of the number of publications, authors and institution, and co-occurrence, clustering and burst terms of keywords in literatures related to adolescent psychological resilience collected in CNKI database from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2021. Results① For almost a decade, the research on adolescent psychological resilience was divided into a slow growth stage (2012-2018) and a rapid growth stage (2018-2021). ② The cooperation between authors were relatively close, and most of them were small and medium-sized cooperative organizations. There was less cooperation in scientific research institutions and most of them were normal universities. ③ In terms of co-occurrence analysis, hot keywords could be roughly divided into three categories: mental health status, influencing factors, and prevention and intervention research. ④ The related high-frequency keywords generate ten clusters, including academic emotions, learning burnout, adolescents, migrant children, mental health, internalized problems, social support, coping style, self-esteem and happiness. ⑤ The keywords with high burst intensity were coping style, mental health, mediation, regression analysis, social work, mental health and anxiety. ConclusionIn the future, cooperation between research institutions can be strengthened to improve the quality of the research on psychological resilience of adolescents. In addition, intervention research related to psychological resilience may become a hotspot in this field in the future.
