ABSTRACT

Abstract This study investigated the changes in the ingredients in Fallopia multiflora Thunb. Haraldson (FMT) root after processing it with different methods such as soaking, stewing, and steaming or combined methods. The total polyphenol, 2,3,5,4′-tetrahydroxystilben-2-O-β-D-glucoside (THSG), and physcion contents in FMT products after processing were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) methods. The results demonstrated that the processing method and time significantly affected the contents of polyphenol, THSG, and physcion. The physcion and total polyphenol content increased or decreased during processing depending upon the processing time, while the THSG content gradually decreased with an increase in the processing time. The content of physcion (a substance that can cause liver toxicity) was analysed, and the suitable conditions for processing of the FMT products were determined as initial soaking in rice swill for 24 h and subsequent stewing with black beans and water for 12 h.

ABSTRACT

Aims: The objective of the present work is the investigation of the physicochemical characteristics of seed coats and kernels from 24 species with medicinal and food applications. Methodology: Seeds from 24 species (2 herbs, 11 vines and 11 trees), belonging to 13 families, were sampled in Raipur (India) in 2017. The collected seeds were dried and weighed, after which seed coats were manually peeled and separately weighed. Phenolic and mineral contents in the seed coats and kernels were analyzed by spectrophotometric and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques, respectively. Results: The seed coat fraction represented from 12% to 95% of the seed mass, depending on the species. The concentrations of total polyphenols, flavonoids and minerals in the seed coats varied from 1800 to 32300 mg/kg, from 1200 to 26900 mg/kg, and from 5876 to 36499 mg/kg, respectively. In the seed kernels, TPh, Fla and minerals ranged from 780 to 31760 mg/kg, from 300 to 12020 mg/kg, and from 12595 to 40810 mg/kg, respectively. P, S, K, Mg, Ca and Fe were found to be the main macro- and micro-elements. Seed coats from Loganiaceae, Phyllanthaceae, Lauraceae and Rutaceae families featured the highest total polyphenol contents, and those from Lauraceae and Rutaceae families showed the highest flavonoid concentrations. The highest total mineral contents corresponded to seed coats from Lauraceae, Rutaceae and Euphorbiaceae families. Conclusion: Indian-laurel and curry tree stand out as promising phytochemical and nutrient sources.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to optimize the extraction method for total polyphenol from Phyllanthus emblica through multi-target orthogonal experiment,in order to provide data reference for its industrial production.The comprehensive evaluation indexes included the extraction yield,extraction percentage of total polyphenol,chebulagic acid,gallic acid,mucic acid-2-O-gallate,were verified.The ethanol concentration,solid-liquid ratio and extraction time were crucial indexes for orthogonal design.The results showed that the best extraction process was using 10 times dosage 70% ethanol,to extract the medical material three time,90 minutes for every time.It was concluded that the extraction technology was reliable.This method was stable,quick and simple.It laid a fundamental foundation for the extraction method exploration.

ABSTRACT

Aim To study the in vitro and in vivo an-tioxidant activity of Inula nervosa wall. in order to le-gitimately use the resources of I. nervosa. Methods The medicinal ingredients of aboveground and under-ground parts of I. nervosa were extracted by different extraction methods. Ultrasonic extractions from differ-ent parts were compared by their in vitro and in vivo antioxidant effects. Results Ultrasound alcohol ex-traction had the highest content of total phenols and fla-vonoids, with the content of total phenolics much high-er than that of total flavonoids. Ultrasound alcohol ex-tractions had very good scavenging effect on DPPH, ABTS and superoxide anion radical, with the extraction from underground part more effective than extraction from aboveground part. Ultrasound alcohol extractions significantly increased the level of catalase ( CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capaci-ty (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activi-ty and decreased the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver, kidney and serum in drenching aging mice. The antioxidant activity of high concentration of the ex-traction from aerial part was equivalent to that of low concentration of the extraction from underground part. Conclusions Ultrasound alcohol extractions of I. ner-vosa have very good scavenging effect on free radicals, which indicates good antioxidant ability. Antioxidant activity of underground part is much stronger than that of the aboveground part.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To optimize spray drying process for the raw fruits extract of Psidium guajava. METHODS:Based on single factor,the response surface method was designed to optimize spray drying process condition,using extract rate as index and mass concentration,sampling temperature and sampling speed as factors. The contents and transport rate of total flavones and total polyphenol were determined in each step. RESULTS:The optimal process was as follows as mass concentration of 100 g/L, sampling temperature of 170 ℃,sampling speed of 180 ml/h. Under this condition,the yield of 3 batches of product was(56.08± 0.58)%(RSD=1.04%,n=3). The difference value between test value and predict value was 0.25,without significant difference (P>0.05). The powder of the raw fruits of P. guajava had high contents of total flavones [(17.80 ± 0.09)%] and total polyphenol [(1.23 ± 0.06)%]. The transport rates of them were 87.7% and 25.7%. CONCLUSIONS:Optimized process is feasible to obtain qualified product,and can be used to make medicinal solid preparation.

ObjectiveTo compare the content difference of total flavonoid, total polyphenol and scavenging activity to DPPH free radical ofDracocephalum tanguticum Maxim (DtM) before and after roasted;To explore the relationship between the contents of active components and antioxidant activity in the DtM before and after roasted.MethodsThe crude and roasted DtM were extracted with 75% ethanol as the solvent. The contents of total flavonoid and total polyphenol were detected by NaNO2-Al (NO3)3-NaOH and Folin-ciocalteu methods, respectively. The antioxidant abilities were evaluated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity. ResultsThe content of total flavonoids in the crude DtM (6.442%)the roasted DtM (0.628), and free radical scavenging efficiency of the crude DtM (1181.335)

OBJECTIVE@#To screen the phytochemical constituents and study antioxidant properties of the aqueous extract of the wheatgrass.@*METHODS@#The current study was focused on broad parameters namely, phytochemical analysis, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and antioxidant properties in order to characterize the aqueous extract of wheatgrass as a potential free radical quencher.@*RESULTS@#The phytochemical screening of the aqueous extract of wheatgrass showed the presence of various secondary metabolites but the absence of sterols and quinone in general. Wheatgrass was proved to be an effective radical scavenger in all antioxidant assays. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis confirmed the presence of diverse category of bioactive compounds such as squalene, caryophyllene and amyrins in varying percentage.@*CONCLUSIONS@#From the results obtained, we conclude that wheatgrass aqueous extract contains various effective compounds. It is a potential source of natural antioxidants. Further analysis of this herb will help in finding new effective compounds which can be of potent use in pharmacological field.

ABSTRACT

The principal objective of this study was to examine the quality characteristics of yanggaeng supplemented with powder derived from Sanghwang mushroom (Phellinus linteus) mycelia. We analyzed the potential of utilizing Phellinus linteus mycelia as a functional food material by estimating total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, electron-donating abilities, as well as antioxidative activities of the water and ethanol extracts of Sanghwang mushroom mycelia. The total phenol and flavonoid contents of ethanol extracts from Phellinus linteus mycelia were 0.69 mg/ml and 0.16 mg/ml, respectively, while the contents from the water extract of Phellinus linteus mycelia were 0.66 mg/ml and 0.22 mg/ml, respectively. The electron-donating abilities of ethanol and water extracts from Phellinus linteus mycelia were 88.64 and 90.29%, respectively. The ABTS radical scavenging activities of ethanol and water extracts from Phellinus linteus mycelia were 89.74 and 71.35%, respectively. In terms of color values, as the level of powder increased, the value of L (lightness) decreased, whereas those of a (redness) and b (yellowness) increased. In regard to the mechanical properties of the samples, we noted significant differences in hardness, springiness, chewiness, and gumminess (P<0.05). The results of the sensory evaluation showed that the score from SHM (Sanghwang mushroom mycelia) with 4% powder was significantly higher than other samples in terms of sweetness, color, taste, texture and overall quality (P<0.05). Taken together, the recommended level of Phellinus linteus mycelia powder in yanggaeng is 4% for optimal sensory characteristics.
