ABSTRACT

Although biotelemetry studies bring useful information, tagging is a highly invasive procedure. For this reason, we assess if intracoelomic tagging alters survivorship, weight gain and/or reproductive capacity of a neotropical migratory fish. In August 2016, 60 fish were equally and randomly distributed among 3 treatments: Control (anesthesia), sham surgery (anesthesia and surgery), and true surgery (anesthesia, surgery and tagging). Surveys for weight and tag expulsion were performed periodically from surgery through spawning (November/2016), with a final survey occurring in May/2017. Mortality was higher in true surgery (25% died) and for males. Twenty percent expelled tags, and initial weight loss followed by gain were verified for all treatments. Females of all treatments spawned, and fecundity and fertility were not different. Then, future studies should consider the losses due to death and tag expulsion when defining the sample number. We also encourage further investigations about differences in mortality between sex and weight variation, as well as any other factor that leads to increase in mortality. This is the first study that investigated tagging effects in reproduction of neotropical fishes, and since the methods and tags used are not species-specific, we infer that similar effects could occur in other species.(AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was performed to explore the weight variations in high-risk term newborns hospitalized during the early postnatal period. METHODS: A retrospective explorative study was performed with 64 term newborns who were hospitalized in the NICU after birth. Data on daily weight, birth information, and clinical features such as phototherapy, placements, nutritional status were reviewed through medical records for 14 days of life. General Linear Model, GLM was applied to analyze the weight variation by clinical features of these high-risk term newborns for 14 days of life. RESULTS: Newborns at 40 weeks of gestation showed little weight loss during the few days after birth then steadily gained weight to 7.6% at the 14th day. Infants born at 37-39 gestation showed little weight gain for 14 days though the weight loss itself was not apparent. As well, return to birthweight was not observed in newborns with phototherapy, infants placed on a warmer or infants having gastrointestinal dysfunction for 14 days of life. CONCLUSION: Even for term newborns, physiologic weight loss may not be warranted even if newborn is born at less than 40 week of gestation, or with high-risk conditions that warrant admission to NICU.

ABSTRACT

Quality of pharmaceutical product is very important because drugs must be marketed as safe and therapeutically active formulations whose performance is consistent and predictable. The evaluation of the physical characteristics of the pharmaceutical products can ensure their quality as well as bioavailability and impart optimum therapeutic activity. Ketorolac tromethamine was chosen for this comparative study because this drug is widely used worldwide for treating moderate to severe pain. The present study compared the weight variation, hardness and the abrasion withstanding ability of eight brands of Ketorolac tromethamine tablets marketed in Bangladesh following USP guidelines. All eight brands of Ketorolac tromethamine tested conformed to the USP weight variation test. All the brands had average hardness of ≥3 kg which was satisfactory for immediate release tablet like ketorolac tromethamine. All the brands had shown their friability variation within ±1% range specified by USP. Standard deviation was calculated among all the brands which was very close to individual percentage friability of all the brands. All the brands of ketorolac tromethamine complied with USP requirements of physical quality parameters. It follows that these brands will show good disintegration and dissolution profile which would further help in achieving optimum bioavailability and in fulfilling the patient demands.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To improve medication safety and efficacy.METHODS:5different tablets broken off with hands were investigated with respect to weight variations and microbial limits by reference to Chinese Pharmacopeia.RESULTS:The5kinds of tablets broken off with hands were not in conformity with Chinese Pharmacopeia with respect to weight variation and which involved different degrees of microbial contaminations.CONCLUSION:It is recommended that pharmaceutical enter?prises should add more dosage forms of standard drugs that suitable for the use of children, women, the aged and particular patients. If the separately packaged drugs must be broken off with hands, aseptic method should be applied in which the drugs were broken off by the pharmacists on the sterile air bench before being separately packed with sterilized plastic pouches(which were sterilized with anprolene),and which should be administered to the patients for taking during the same day.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To analyse the advantages and disvantages of split tablets given to in-patients.METHODS:We collected13kinds of oral tablets(10tablets each kind and260pieces of the split tablet altogether),which were often splitted by pharmaceutists. We tested and analysed the weight variation of the split tablet on the basis of the dosage consistency metioned in the USP which is applied to the whole tablet.RESULTS:None of the13kinds of prescription drug passed the consistent testing after splitting. There was some relationship between the effect of the split tablet and its shape. It was relatively easy to break off the tablet with nick in half. The loss of dosage inevitably occurred during the process of splitting the tablet.CONCLUSION:Breaking off the tablet in half led to high ratio of weight variation. The modus operandi of splitting the tablet in half for saving expenses can only be applied to those drugs with low toxicities and relatively flat dose-effect curve. In the case of those drugs which bear high toxicities and steep dose-effect curve, carefulness should always be taken when applying such method.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To establish the optimum preparation process for Bupleurum dropping pill. METHODS: A series of signal tests have been studied for the choice of substrate、 its proportion of substrate to drug、 the dropping and cooling agent temperature and dropping speed to make average pill weight, weight variation and roundness up to grade. RESULTS: The best pills formatting process were a ratio of PEG4000 to PEG6000(3∶1). CONCLUSION: This preparation method is suitable for both the laboratory test and the industrial production for Bupleurum dropping pill.
