Introduction: The consumption of alcoholic beverages reduces the body's ability to deal with dangerous situations and exposes people to trauma. Objective: To determine the association between the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the characteristics of maxillofacial fractures treated at a Cuban university hospital in the context of COVID-19. Material and Methods: An observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study was carried out in the Maxillofacial Surgery unit at the "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" General University Hospital during the year 2020. Prevalence ratios, 95% confidence intervals and p-values were obtained using generalized linear models. Results: In 58.23% of the cases, fractures were related to the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The fundamental etiology was interpersonal violence (47.75%), regardless of the consumption of alcoholic beverages. There was a prevalence of patients with nasal fractures (n=98; 55.06%), among which, 35.71% had consumed alcoholic beverages at the time of the trauma. Being male (p=0.005), the lack of university studies (p=0.007), the need for surgical treatment (p<0.001), the fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary complex (p=0.023), and the traumas that occurred during the weekends (p<0.001) or during the month of June (p=0.029) were factors associated with a higher frequency of fractures related to the consumption of alcoholic beverages. There was a lower frequency of fractures associated with alcohol consumption during the months of January (p=0.006) and March (p=0.001). Conclusion: Six out of ten cases were under the influence of alcoholic beverages. There was a greater number of young and male patients, mainly due to interpersonal violence.


Introducción: La ingestión de bebidas alcohólicas disminuye la capacidad del organismo para enfrentar situaciones de peligro y lo predispone a sufrir traumatismos diversos. Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre el consumo de bebidas alcohólicas y las características de las fracturas maxilofaciales atendidas en un hospital universitario cubano en el contexto de la COVID-19. Material y Métodos: Estudio observacional, analítico y transversal realizado en el servicio de Cirugía Maxilofacial del Hospital General Universitario "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" durante el 2020. Se obtuvieron razones de prevalencia, intervalos de confianza a 95% y valores p mediante modelos lineales generalizados. Resultados: En el 58.23% de los casos las fracturas se relacionaron con la ingestión de bebidas alcohólicas. La etiología fundamental fue la violencia interpersonal (47.75%), independientemente del consumo o no de bebidas alcohólicas. Predominaron los pacientes con fracturas nasales (n=98; 55.06%), en los que el 35.71% había consumido bebidas alcohólicas en el momento del trauma. El sexo masculino (p=0.005), la carencia de estudios universitarios (p=0.007), la necesidad de tratamiento quirúrgico (p<0.001), las fracturas del complejo cigomático-maxilar (p=0.023), los traumas sucedidos durante los fines de semanas (p<0.001) o durante el mes de junio (p=0.029) fueron factores asociados a una mayor frecuencia de fracturas relacionadas con el consumo de bebidas alcohólicas. Hubo menor frecuencia de fracturas asociadas a este consumo durante los meses de enero (p=0.006) y marzo (p= 0.001). Conclusión: Seis de cada diez casos estuvieron bajo los efectos de la ingestión de bebidas alcohólicas. Existió una mayor afectación de pacientes jóvenes, masculinos, a causa principalmente de la violencia interpersonal.

ABSTRACT Background: The health benefits associated with moderate wine consumption, as with ethanol and phenolic compounds, include different mechanisms still little understandable. Aim: Evaluate glycemic and weight variations, and the deposit of triglycerides, cholesterol and liver glycogen with red wine consumption. Methods: 60 ApoE knockout mice were divided into three groups of 20: Wine Group (WG), Ethanol Group (EG) and Water Group (WAG). They received daily: WG 50 ml of wine and 50 ml water; EG 6 ml ethanol and WAG 94 ml of water. All groups were followed for four months. The food intake was monitored daily, in the period from eight to ten hours and held every five days. The measurement of water intake was also made every five days. The weighing of the animals took place every ten days. Results: The WG had higher weight increase as compared to the other groups. The concentration of hepatic triglyceride was higher in WG (57%) and the EG group was lower (31.6%, p<0.01) than the control. The concentration of cholesterol was lower in the WG (23.6%), as well as EG (24.5%, p<0.05). The concentration of glycogen was higher in WG (16%) and fasting blood glucose was higher in EG compared to the other groups but not both demonstrated a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: The WG increased triglyceride and WAG decreased cholesterol. The triglyceride may be increased due to the high caloric value of wine or some unknown property that led to significant increase in subcutaneous andretroperitoneal fat in mice.


RESUMO Racional: Os benefícios para a saúde associados ao consumo moderado de vinho, como etanol e compostos fenólicos, incluem mecanismos diferentes ainda pouco compreensíveis. Objetivo: Avaliar as variações da glicemia, peso e depósito de triglicrideos, colesterol e glicogênio hepático com o uso de vinho tinto. Métodos: Sessenta camundongos ApoE knockout foram divididos em três grupos de 20: Grupo do Vinho (WG), grupo do Etanol (EG) Grupo Água (WAG). Cada grupo recebeu diariamente: WG 50 ml de vinho e 50 ml de água; EG 6 ml de etanol e WAG 94 ml de água. Resultados: O WG teve aumento de peso mais elevado em comparação com os outros grupos. A concentração de triglicerídeos foi maior no WG (57%) e no grupo EG inferior (31,6%) do que no controle (p <0,01). A concentração de colesterol foi inferior no WG (23,6%) e no EG (24,5%, p<0,05). A concentração de glicogênio foi maior no WG (16%); a glicemia capilar foi maior no EG em comparação com os outros grupos, mas não demonstrou diferença estatisticamente significativa. Conclusão: Triglicerídeos ficaram aumentados no WG e o colesterol diminuiu no WAG. Os triglicerídeos podem ter aumentado devido ao alto valor calórico do vinho ou alguma propriedade desconhecida que levou ao aumento significativo da gordura subcutânea e retroperitoneal nos camundongos.

ABSTRACT

Ethanol abuse is linked to several acute and chronic injuries that can lead to health problems. Ethanol addiction is one of the most severe diseases linked to the abuse of this drug. Symptoms of ethanol addiction include compulsive substance intake and withdrawal syndrome. Stress exposure has an important role in addictive behavior for many drugs of abuse (including ethanol), but the consequences of stress and ethanol in the organism when these factors are concomitant results in a complex interaction. We investigated the effects of concomitant, chronic administration of ethanol and stress exposure on the withdrawal and consumption of, as well as the preference for, ethanol in mice. Male Swiss mice (30-35 g, 8-10 per group) were exposed to an ethanol liquid diet as the only source of food for 15 days. In the final 5 days, they were exposed to forced swimming stress. Twelve hours after removal of the ethanol liquid diet, animals were evaluated for ethanol withdrawal by measuring anxiety-related behaviors and locomotor activity. Twenty-four hours after evaluation of ethanol withdrawal, they were evaluated for voluntary consumption of ethanol in a "three-bottle choice" paradigm. Mice exposed to chronic consumption of ethanol had decreased locomotor activity during withdrawal. Contrary to our expectations, a concomitant forced swimming stress did not aggravate ethanol withdrawal. Nevertheless, simultaneous ethanol administration and stress exposure increased voluntary consumption of ethanol, mainly solutions containing high concentrations of ethanol. These results showed that stressful situations during ethanol intake may aggravate specific addiction-related behaviors.

ABSTRACT

A investigação de plantas medicinais como recurso terapêutico para combater o alcoolismo ainda é muito insipiente com poucas espécies investigadas. No presente trabalho avaliamos o efeito do extrato hidroalcoólico das folhas da planta Piper caldense C. DC. com relação ao consumo de álcool e também a sua potencialidade ansiolítica. Foram utilizados ratos Wistar machos, os quais foram divididos em grupos controle (solução fisiológica) e tratado (extrato da planta nas doses de 25, 50 e 150 mg/kg, e diazepam 2 mg/kg). Os animais foram tratados através da via intraperitoneal 1 h antes dos experimentos. Os modelos animais utilizados foram: Labirinto em Cruz Elevado (LCE) e auto-administração de álcool (AA). No LCE o extrato não apresentou efeito ansiolítico do tipo benzodiazepínico. Por outro lado, no comportamento relacionado a auto-administração de solução de álcool, o extrato apresentou efeito significativo reduzindo o consumo de álcool em relação ao grupo controle. Apesar do extrato não ter apresentado efeito ansiolítico, o mesmo parece apresentar potencialidades para combater o abuso e a dependência de álcool.


The investigation of medicinal plants as therapeutic resources in the combat of alcoholism is still very incipient with few species being investigated. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of the hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of Piper caldense C. DC. in relation to alcohol consumption and also its anxiolytic potentiality. Male Wistar rats, which had been separated into control group (saline) and treated group (Plant extract doses of 25, 50 and 150 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg of diazepam), were used. Animals were injected intraperitoneally 1 h before the tests. The following models were used: Elevated plus maze (EPM) and alcohol self-administration (ASA). In the EPM, the extract did not show benzodiazepine anxiolytic effect. On the other hand, in the behavior related to alcohol self-administration, the extract showed a significant effect, reducing alcohol consumption compared to the control group. Although the extract has not shown any anxiolytic effect, the results suggest that the plant has potential to combat alcohol abuse and addiction.

ABSTRACT

Objetivos: Establecer el perfil de la función y la conducta ejecutiva en 50 consumidores de alcohol que están ubicados en un nivel de alto riesgo según el Cuestionario de Identificación de los Trastornos Debidos al Consumo de Alcohol (AUDIT) y provienen de diferentes universidades de la ciudad de Bogotá. Material y métodos: Se utilizó un diseño de tipo analítico transversal, y se tomaron como variables de estudio la función ejecutiva (inhibición, monitoreo, secuenciación, planificación, flexibilidad cognitiva, memoria de trabajo, control atencional, categorización y formación de conceptos) y la conducta ejecutiva (toma de decisiones, control de impulsos, feedback emocional, empatía y teoría de la mente). Resultados y conclusiones: Los resultados mostraron que hay mayor número de dominios cognitivos de la función ejecutiva comprometidos en contraste con los de la conducta ejecutiva. Tal es el caso de la inhibición, secuenciación, control atencional (velocidad de procesamiento), categorización, flexibilidad cognitiva, automonitoreo y planificación.


Objectives: Establish the profile of executive function and behavior in fifty consumers of alcohol are located in a high-risk level according to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and which belong to different universities in the city of Bogota. Material and methods: Was used analytical transverse design, and were taken as study variables executive function (inhibition, monitoring, sequencing, planning, cognitive flexibility, working memory, attentional control, categorization and concept formation) and executive behavior (decision making, impulse control, emotional feedback, empathy and theory of mind). Results and conclutions: Results showed that there is a greater number of cognitive domains of executive function involved in contrast to those of executive behavior. Such is for inhibition, sequencing, attention control (processing speed), categorization, cognitive flexibility, self monitoring and planning.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess contrast sensitivity for angular frequency stimuli as well as for sine-wave gratings in adults under the effect of acute ingestion of alcohol. We measured the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) for gratings of 0.25, 1.25, 2.5, 4, 10, and 20 cycles per degree of visual angle (cpd) as well as for angular frequency stimuli of 1, 2, 4, 24, 48, and 96 cycles/360°. Twenty adults free of ocular diseases, with normal or corrected-to-normal visual acuity, and no history of alcoholism were enrolled in two experimental groups: 1) no alcohol intake (control group) and 2) alcohol ingestion (experimental group). The average concentration of alcohol in the experimental group was set to about 0.08%. We used a paradigm involving a forced-choice method. Maximum sensitivity to contrast for sine-wave gratings in the two groups occurred at 4 cpd sine-wave gratings and at 24 and 48 cycles/360° for angular frequency stimuli. Significant changes in contrast sensitivity were observed after alcohol intake compared with the control condition at spatial frequency of 4 cpd and 1, 24, and 48 cycles/360° for angular frequency stimuli. Alcohol intake seems to affect the processing of sine-wave gratings at maximum sensitivity and at the low and high frequency ends for angular frequency stimuli, both under photopic luminance conditions.

ABSTRACT

O consumo excessivo de bebidas alcoólicas é um grave problema de saúde pública. Esta revisão bibliográfica objetivou identificar estudos sobre consumo de bebidas alcoólicas em produções científicas publicadas em periódicos brasileiros de enfermagem, no período de 2006 a 2010. Consultaram-se bases eletrônicas de dados utilizando-se os descritores bebidas alcoólicas, consumo de bebidas alcoólicas e enfermagem. Foram selecionados para esta revisão 22 estudos que foram apresentados e discutidos em cinco categorias temáticas, a saber: consumo de bebidas alcoólicas por estudantes universitários, por adolescentes, por trabalhadores, por mulheres e consumo de bebidas alcoólicas nos processos fisiológicos ou patológicos. Concluiu-se que a enfermagem tem contribuído para o conhecimento científico sobre bebidas alcoólicas e que o enfermeiro é profissional competente para atuar em ações de prevenção de agravos e de promoção da saúde relacionadas ao consumo de álcool.


The excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages is a major public health problem. This literature review aimed to identify studies on alcoholic beverage consumption in the scientific production published in Brazilian nursing journals from 2006 to 2010. Electronic databases were consulted using the keywords alcoholic beverages, consumption of alcohol and nursing (in Portuguese). The 22 studies selected for review were presented and discussed in five thematic categories: consumption of alcoholic beverages by university students, by teenagers, by workers, by women, and alcoholic beverage consumption in pathological or physiological processes. It was concluded that nursing has contributed to the scientific knowledge on alcoholic beverages and that the nursing profession is competent to perform actions to prevention disorders and promote health in relation to alcohol consumption.


El consumo excesivo de bebidas alcohólicas es un grave problema de salud pública. Esta revisión bibliográfica objetivó identificar estudios sobre consumo de bebidas alcohólicas en producciones científicas publicadas en periódicos brasileños de enfermería, en el período de 2006 a 2010. Se consultaron bases de datos electrónicas utilizándose los descriptores bebidas alcohólicas, consumo de bebidas alcohólicas y enfermería. Fueron seleccionados para esta revisión 22 estudios presentados y discutidos en cinco categorías temáticas, a saber: consumo de bebidas alcohólicas por estudiantes universitarios, por adolescentes, por trabajadores, por mujeres y consumo de bebidas alcohólicas en los procesos fisiológicos o patológicos. Se concluyó que la enfermería ha contribuido para el conocimiento científico sobre bebidas alcohólicas y que el enfermero es profesional competente para actuar en acciones de prevención de agravios y promoción de la salud relacionadas al consumo de alcohol.

ABSTRACT

FUNDAMENTO: A disfunção erétil afeta um grande número de homens no mundo e os inibidores de PDE 5 (iPDE5) estão entre os principais métodos de tratamento desses pacientes. O consumo social de álcool e o ato sexual apresentam uma relação considerável. Portanto, a associação entre álcool e iPDE5 pode ocorrer. O carbonato de lodenafila é um novo iPDE5 desenvolvido por uma empresa brasileira. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a repercussão cardiovascular do carbonato de lodenafila, associado ou não ao álcool, assim como as alterações na farmacocinética que esta associação possa determinar. MÉTODOS: Estudo realizado com 15 voluntários sadios que receberam em momentos diferentes o carbonato de lodenafila (CL) na dose de 160 mg em jejum, CL (160 mg) com álcool, ou somente placebo. Esses pacientes foram monitorados por 24 horas, sendo avaliado o quadro clínico, a pressão arterial (PA), a frequência cardíaca (FC), o intervalo QT e também os dados de farmacocinética. RESULTADOS: O carbonato de lodenafila, isoladamente ou associado com álcool, não determinou alterações clínicas significativas na PA ou FC, embora tenha ocorrido diminuição da PA estatisticamente significativa após 4 horas, nos voluntários que receberam medicamento e álcool, assim como um aumento da FC após 6 horas nos pacientes que receberam o CL. A análise do intervalo QT corrigido não mostrou alteração significativa. O álcool aumentou a biodisponibilidade do medicamento em 74 por cento. Houve somente 2 queixas de cefaleia leve, possivelmente associada ao medicamento. CONCLUSÃO: O carbonato de lodenafila, mesmo associado ao álcool, não determinou repercussões clínicas importantes na PA, FC, ou alterações no intervalo QTc; a ingestão com álcool, por sua vez, aumentou significativamente sua biodisponibilidade.


BACKGROUND: Millions of men around the world suffer from erectile dysfunction, for which phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE-5 inhibitors) are currently the first treatment option. Sexual activity and alcohol consumption are closely related, and the simultaneous use of alcohol and PDE-5 inhibitors can happen. Lodenafil carbonate is a new PDE-5 inhibitor, developed by a Brazilian pharmaceutical company. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed at evaluating the cardiovascular safety of lodenafil carbonate, with and without simultaneous alcohol consumption. METHODS: Fifteen male volunteers received 160 mg lodenafil carbonate (LC), in three different moments. Participants were assigned to three groups, treated with LC in fasting condition, with alcohol or receiving only placebo. The volunteers were continuously monitored during 24 hours for physical impairment, blood pressure, heart rate, QT interval and lodenafil's pharmacokinetic parameters. RESULTS: Lodenafil carbonate alone or with alcohol did not induce clinically relevant modifications in arterial blood pressure or heart rate. A statistically significant decrease in blood pressure was seen four hours after LC and alcohol intake, and an increase in heart rate six hours after intake of lodenafil carbonate alone. The QTc interval was not significantly modified. Lodenafil carbonate bioavailability was increased in 74 percent when drug intake was associated with alcohol. CONCLUSION: These results show that the use of lodenafil carbonate did not have clinically relevant effects on blood pressure or heart rate, and was not associated with QT interval prolongation. The association of lodenafil carbonate and alcohol affected its pharmacokinetic properties, increasing the bioavailability of the drug.


FUNDAMENTO: La disfunción eréctil afecta a un gran número de hombres en el mundo y los inhibidores de PDE5 (iPDE5) están entre los principales métodos de tratamiento de estos pacientes. El consumo social de alcohol y el acto sexual presentan una relación considerable. Por lo tanto, puede ocurrir una asociación entre alcohol e iPDE5. El carbonato de lodenafila es un nuevo iPDE5 desarrollado por una empresa brasileña. OBJETIVO: Evaluar la repercusión cardiovascular del carbonato de lodenafila, asociado o no al alcohol, así como las alteraciones en la farmacocinética que esta asociación pueda determinar. MÉTODOS: Estudio realizado con 15 voluntarios sanos que recibieron en momentos diferentes el carbonato de lodenafila (CL) en la dosis de 160mg en ayunas, CL (160 mg) con alcohol, o solamente placebo. Estos pacientes fueron monitoreados por 24 horas, siendo evaluado el cuadro clínico, la presión arterial (PA), la frecuencia cardíaca (FC), el intervalo QT y también los datos de farmacocinética. RESULTADOS: El carbonato de lodenafila, aisladamente o asociado con alcohol, no determinó alteraciones clínicas significativas en la PA o FC, aunque se haya registrado una disminución de la PA estadísticamente significativa después de 4 horas en los voluntarios que recibieron medicamento y alcohol, así como un aumento de la FC después de 6 horas en los pacientes que recibieron el CL. El análisis del intervalo QT corregido no mostró alteración significativa. El alcohol aumentó la biodisponibilidad del medicamento en un 74 por ciento. Se registraron sólo 2 quejas de cefalea leve, posiblemente asociada al medicamento. CONCLUSIÓN: El carbonato de lodenafila, aun asociado al alcohol, no determinó repercusiones clínicas importantes en la PA, FC, o alteraciones en el intervalo QTc; la ingestión con alcohol, a su vez, aumentó significativamente su biodisponibilidad.

Using the pilocarpine model of epilepsy, we investigated the effects of alcohol consumption on the frequency of seizures in animals with epilepsy as well the underlying a possible association between alcohol intake and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) occurrence. Rats were divided randomly into two groups: (A) rats with epilepsy and (B) rats with epilepsy that received a daily dose of ethanol solution (350 mg kg-1, i.p.) for 30 days. The basal frequency of seizures observed in the A and B groups during the first 30 days were 3.4±1.5 and 3.2±1.9 seizures per week per animal, respectively. In B group, it was observed a significant seizure increase (11.6±5.3) during the first 2 weeks of alcohol administration and quite interesting, one rat died suddenly after a generalized tonic-clonic seizure during this period. We concluded in our experimental study that exist a possible association between alcohol abuse and SUDEP occurrence.


Utilizando o modelo de epilepsia induzido pela pilocarpina, investigamos os efeitos do consumo de álcool sobre a frequência de crises epilépticas em animais com epilepsia, como também uma possível associação entre a ingestão de álcool e ocorrência de morte súbita e inesperada nas epilepsias (SUDEP). Os animais foram randomicamente divididos em dois grupos: (A) ratos com epilepsia e (B) ratos com epilepsia que receberam uma dose diária de etanol (350 mg kg-1, i.p.) por 30 dias consecutivos. A frequência basal de crises epilépticas observadas nos grupos A e B durante os primeiros 30 dias foram de 3,4±1,5 e 3,2±1,9 crises por semana/animal, respectivamente. No grupo B, ocorreu aumento significativo na frequência de crises (11,6±5,3) durante as duas primeiras semanas de administração do álcool e de forma interessante, um animal morreu subitamente após uma crise generalizada tônico-clonica durante esse período. Concluímos em nossa abordagem experimental que existe uma possível associação entre o consumo de álcool e a ocorrência de SUDEP.

OBJETIVO: Descrever as alterações nas variáveis da espirometria e seus distúrbios; estudar a existência de associação entre a extensão da lesão pulmonar residual ao final do tratamento da tuberculose e a alteração da função pulmonar aferida pela espirometria. MÉTODOS: Estudou-se uma série de 96 pacientes com diagnóstico de tuberculose pulmonar, atendidos em três unidades de saúde de Região Metropolitana do Recife, durante o período de janeiro de 2003 a novembro de 2005. Foram analisados pacientes de ambos os sexos, com idade a partir de 15 anos, cujas radiografias do tórax do final do tratamento foram classificadas pelo critério da National Tuberculosis Association (NTA). Os pacientes responderam questionário, no início da pesquisa, e foram submetidos à prova de função pulmonar, após o término do tratamento. RESULTADOS: Dos 96 pacientes estudados, concluímos que 89,6 por cento apresentavam seqüelas radiográficas; 54 por cento apresentavam seqüelas moderadas a graves. Estas alterações radiográficas correspondiam a 24,6 por cento e 73,8 por cento, respectivamente, de alterações na função pulmonar. CONCLUSÃO: Foram identificadas 89,6 por cento de lesões residuais radiográficas, enquanto 66,7 por cento das disfunções respiratórias alertam para o fato de que a assistência ao paciente com tuberculose pulmonar não deve se restringir apenas à cura baciloscópica da doença. A identificação de lesões pulmonares residuais e disfunções respiratórias em pacientes que concluem o tratamento da tuberculose permitirão instituir medidas precoces de tratamento dessas seqüelas para uma melhor qualidade de vida.


OBJECTIVE: To describe alterations in spirometric variables and its disturbances and to study the existence of a relationship between extent of the residual lung lesion at the end of treatment for tuberculosis and alteration of the lung function measured by spirometry. METHODS: Analyzed were 96 patients with diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis, treated in three health centers in the metropolitan area of Recife, from January, 2003 to November, 2005. Patients of both genders, 15 years of age or older were included, whose chest x-rays at end of the treatment were classified according to criteria of the National Tuberculosis Association (NTA) for extent of lung lesion. Patients replied to a questionnaire at the beginning of the survey, and were submitted to spirometry after conclusion of treatment. RESULTS: Of the 96 patients, 89.6 percent presented with radiographic sequels. About 54 percent had moderate to severe sequels. These radiographic alterations correspond to 24.6 percent and 73.8 percent respectively of alterations in the pulmonary function. CONCLUSION: The large number of residual radiographic lesionss (89.6 percent) and breathing dysfunction (66,7 percent) identified in this survey call attention to the fact that treatment of a patient with pulmonary tuberculosis must not be restricted to bacteriological healing of the disease. Identification of the residual lung lesions and of the breathing dysfunction in patients who conclude treatment will promote early actions to treat these sequels, improving the quality of life of these patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: Verificar e classificar, de acordo com o JNC 7, os níveis de pressão arterial dos servidores acima de quarenta anos da Universidade de Brasília, e estimar a prevalência de fatores de risco cardiovasculares presentes em tal população. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo transversal na Universidade de Brasília, onde os servidores acima de quarenta anos responderam a um questionário e tiveram pressão arterial, peso e altura medidos. Os níveis de pressão arterial foram classificados de acordo com o JNC 7 e os dados demográficos dos indivíduos de cada categoria foram analisados. A porcentagem dos fatores de risco foi calculada. A análise estatística foi feita através do teste ANOVA e do teste qui-quadrado, quando aplicável. RESULTADOS: Setecentos e quatro servidores participaram do estudo, incluindo 438 homens e 266 mulheres. A mediana de idade foi 47 anos. Segundo o JNC 7, 139 (19,8 por cento) pessoas foram classificadas como normotensas; 298 (42,3 por cento) como pré-hipertensas e 267 (37,9 por cento) como hipertensas. Os fatores de risco avaliados foram sobrepeso/obesidade (56,8 por cento), tabagismo (19,5 por cento), consumo de bebidas alcoólicas (53,6 por cento), sedentarismo (48,4 por cento) e hipertensão (37,9 por cento). CONCLUSAO: A alta freqüência de níveis pressóricos elevados e fatores de risco cardiovasculares apontam para a necessidade de medidas preventivas e terapêuticas de doenças cardiovasculares direcionadas aos servidores da universidade.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Alcohol intake in animals is regulated in much the same way as intake of food. The effect of alcohol on feeding behaviour is not well documented. The objective of this study was to test whether alcohol was ingested as a source of calories after crowding stress in rats. METHODS: Male albino rats were exposed to crowding stress continuously for two weeks and the effect of stress on the body weight, food intake, voluntary alcohol consumption and caloric intake in terms of food and alcohol was studied. RESULTS: A significant decrease in the body weight was seen after one (P < 0.05), 7 and 14 days (P < 0.01) of stress compared to controls. Food intake decreased significantly (P < 0.01) after one day of stress and there was recovery after 7 days stress. Absolute alcohol intake (g/kg body weight) increased significantly (P < 0.001) after one day of stress. Prolonged stress for two weeks significantly (P < 0.01) increased the alcohol consumption. Total caloric intake in stressed rats decreased significantly (P < 0.001) after acute stress. After 14 days, stressed rats showed significant (P < 0.001) increase in total caloric intake compared to day one. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: Crowding stress decreased the body weight gain throughout the period of stress. Chronic stress for two weeks increased the voluntary alcohol consumption and total caloric intake. Food intake alone seemed insufficient to provide the extra demand of energy due to prolonged stress and hence, the rats may be drinking increasing amounts of alcohol (when provided) to supply the extra energy required to combat stress.

ABSTRACT

The effect of acute alcohol consumption was studied in healthy subjects (Group-I) and in nondrinking hypertensive (Group-II) and in regularly drinking hypertensive patients (Group-III). All subjects consumed alcohol (1gm/kg body weight daily) for 5 days, then abstained for 5 days. Blood pressure was recorded in standing and supine position every morning. Group-I showed no significant difference in blood pressures during and after alcohol consumption. Group-II showed a statistically significant increase in the supine and standing systolic/diastolic and mean blood pressure when consuming alcohol (P < 0.01) as compared to the period of abstinence. In Group-III, hypertensive patients who drank regularly showed significant decrease in systolic blood pressure in the period of abstinence during standing (p < 0.02) as well as in supine position (p < 0.001) and diastolic and mean blood pressure reduction in standing and supine position (p < 0.01) as compared to the period of drinking.

ABSTRACT

La odontología debería tener mayor ingerencia en algunos problemas de salud pública general importantes en nuestro país. De acuerdo a este se realizó un estudio para determinar la prevalencia de bebedores problema en quienes acudían a recibir atención dental a la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Chile en 1989. Se analizaron 420 pacientes mayores de 15 años de ambos sexos, cuyas edades fluctuaron entre los 15 y los 74 años. La investigación se realizó como un estudio transversal, por medio de la aplicación de un instrumento ya probado para tal efecto: la Escala Breve de Bebedores Alcohólicos, E.B.B.A. De la muestra seleccionada se estudiaron tres variables: sexo, edad y distribución por clínica, las que fueron analizadas estadísticamente mediante el test de Chi cuadrado y la prueba de Z. Los resultados obtenidos a partir de la muestra indican que hay una alta prevalencia de bebedores problema, habiéndose obtenido una tasa global de 31,9 por ciento de ellos. La diferencia de frecuencia encontrada entre ambos sexos fue estadísticamente significativa. La información obtenida permite sugerir la necesidad de profundizar los conocimientos en cuanto a los cambios morfofuncionales de las estructuras bucomáxilo faciales en pacientes adictos al alcohol
