ABSTRACT

Introduction: Burns, an injury of high biopsychosocial importance, are a crucial issue in medical training, and newly graduated students face burn patients in a variety of professional settings. Methods: This study assessed the teaching and learning of burns among medical students at a public facility in the State of São Paulo; a specific questionnaire was applied to evaluate first year (Group 1: 54 students) and sixth year (Group 2: 60 students) medical students' knowledge about the initial care of burn patients. Results: In Group 1, there was a substantial lack of knowledge about the subject, with a general average incorrect answer rate ("errors") of 70.98% and a correct answer rate of 29.02%; in Group 2, these rates were 36.66% and 63.34%, respectively. Only 63.34% of the sixth-year students would be able to adequately conduct the treatment of a burn patient, gauged by their ability to offer a patient a better prognosis. Conclusions: The data are disturbing, since adequate knowledge and preparation of the trainees for the care of burn patients has not been verified, and burns are emergency situations that require prompt, adequate, and efficient medical intervention to reduce patients' morbidity and mortality.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: With the aging process, there has been anincrease in the incidence of diabetes, especially among sedentary individuals. In spite of that, few studies have verified the physical skills of active old people and their association with the presence of diabetes. Objective: To assess the association between the presence of diabetes and physical skills in old people practitioners of regular exercise. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with old people participating of physical activities projects by the Study Group of the Third Age (GETI) at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC) and Leisure and Health Program at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IF/SC). We evaluated 277 old people of both sexes, including216 women (mean age 67.05±8.24 years) and 61 men(69.41±8.71 years). For data collection, we used a diagnostic form, maximal handgrip strength test and physical tests contained in the battery of tests Senior FitnessTest (SFT).We carried out descriptive and inferential statistics by using the Chi Square or Mann-Whitney test, according to the variable. We adopted a significance level of 5%. Results: Atotal of 33 (11.9%) individuals reported having clinical diagnosis of diabetes. With regard to physical skills, it was observed that only agility (p=0,047) and aerobic resistance (p=0,014) were the skills that showed significant differences between the groups with and without a clinical diagnosis of diabetes. Conclusion: Old people practicing physical exercises with diabetes have worse performance in agility and aerobic resistance when compared to those without the disease.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to identify technical item flaws in the multiple choice questions submitted for the final exams for the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. This descriptive analytical study was carried out in Islamic International Medical College [IIMC]. The Data was collected from the MCQ's submitted by the faculty for the final exams for the year 2009, 2010 and 2011. The data was compiled and evaluated by a three member assessment committee. The data was analyzed for frequency and percentages the categorical data was analyzed by chi-square test. Overall percentage of flawed item was 67% for the year 2009 of which 21% were for testwiseness and 40% were for irrelevant difficulty. In year 2010 the total item flaws were 36% and 11% testwiseness and 22% were for irrelevant difficulty. The year 2011 data showed decreased overall flaws of 21%. The flaws of testwisness were 7%, irrelevant difficulty were 11%. Technical item flaws are frequently encountered during MCQ construction, and the identification of flaws leads to improved quality of the single best MCQ's
