ABSTRACT

Introducción: Las palmas tienen adaptaciones para prosperar en el entorno limitante del sotobosque, que se pueden examinar a partir del estudio de las tasas de supervivencia, crecimiento y fecundidad. Sin embargo, los estudios que abordan las estrategias de tasas vitales desarrolladas por una comunidad de palmas para habitar el sotobosque del bosque son escasos. Objetivo: Determinar y comparar las tasas vitales de supervivencia, crecimiento y fertilidad en una comunidad de palmas de sotobosque andino. Métodos: El estudio se realizó en el Parque Natural Chicaque, Colombia. En un área de 0.07 ha, donde se estudiaron las especies Chamaedorea linearis, C. pinnatifrons, Geonoma orbignyana y G. undata. Durante 2018 a 2019 se recolectaron datos correspondientes a supervivencia, crecimiento y fecundidad. Las tasas vitales se estimaron a partir de su relación con el tamaño de los individuos. Resultados: Se registraron un total de 597, 687, 453 y 690 individuos en 0.1 ha de C. linearis, C. pinnatifrons, G. orbignyana y G. undata, respectivamente. Las cuatro especies tuvieron una alta supervivencia de plántulas, bajas tasas de crecimiento en individuos sin tallo, baja producción de hojas, pocas hojas totales, una alta longevidad de las hojas, e inicio de la reproducción con un tallo de baja altura. No obstante, hubo diferencias entre las especies en las que G. orbignyana y C. pinnatifrons presentaron patrones comúnmente vistos en las palmas del sotobosque. Por el contrario, C. linearis y G. undata tienen estrategias de crecimiento mixtas para hacer frente a los espacios abiertos y las condiciones del sotobosque, ya que sus hojas y copas son más grandes, tienen mayores tasas de crecimiento del tallo y la reproducción comienza a mayor altura. En cuanto a los géneros, las Chamaedoreas tuvieron unas tasas de crecimiento y reproducción altas, pasando la mayor parte de su vida como adultos. Por su parte, las Geonomas priorizan la permanencia de los individuos, con sus ciclos de vida largos, tasas de crecimiento más bajas. Conclusiones: Las Chamaedoreas priorizan crecimiento y reproducción, mientras que las Geonomas priorizan la permanencia. Las condiciones limitantes del sotobosque parecen favorecer estas dos estrategias de crecimiento típicas de las especies estudiadas. Estos resultados pueden considerarse como un paso hacia el conocimiento de las estrategias de la coexistencia de las comunidades de palmeras en los bosques.


Introduction: Palms have adaptations to thrive in the limiting environment of the understory, which can be examined from studying their survival, growth and fecundity rates. However, studies that address the vital rates strategies developed by a community of palms to successfully inhabit the forest understory are scarce. Objective: To determine and compare the vital rates of survival, growth and fecundity in a community of Andean understory palms. Methods: The study was carried out in the Chicaque Natural Park, Colombia in an area occupying 0.07 ha, focused on the species Chamaedorea linearis, C. pinnatifrons, Geonoma orbignyana and G. undata. During 2018 and 2019, data corresponding to survival, growth and fecundity of these species were collected. The vital rates were estimated from their relationship with the size of the individuals. Results: A total of 597, 687, 453 and 690 individuals were registered in 0.1 ha of C. linearis, C. pinnatifrons, G. orbignyana and G. undata, respectively. The four species had high survival of seedlings, low growth rates in stemless individuals, low leaf production, few total leaves, a high longevity of the leaves and start of reproduction with low-height aerial stem. However, we found differences among species in which G. orbignyana and C. pinnatifrons demonstrated patterns commonly seen in understory palms. By contrast, C. linearis and G. undata had mixed growth strategies to cope with open spaces and understory conditions, as their leaves are larger, have larger stem growth rates and reproduction begins at a higher height. In terms of the genera, Chamaedoreas had fast growth and reproduction rates, spending most of their lives as adults. Meanwhile, Geonomas prioritizes the stasis of individuals, with its long-life cycles and lower growth rates. Conclusions: Chamaedoreas prioritizes growth and reproduction, while Geonomas prioritizes stasis. The limiting conditions of the understory seem to favor these two growth strategies in the species. These results can be considered as a step towards better understanding the strategies of a community of palms in the understory.

ABSTRACT

With occurrence mainly in the southwest Goiás, Butia purpurascens has fruits and leaves widely extracted by the regional population. Coexists with exotic grasses, frequent burnings and cattle's grazing and trampling. Young individuals are rarely seen. We aim to provide information about propagules, seedling formation and the monitoring of saplings of B. purpurascens until adults in reproductive phase. Fruits were selected, measured and benefited after harvest. Of 6,000 fruits collected 3,112 were discarded for being perforated by Conotrachelus weevils. The experiment divided 2,600 fruits into 13 treatments, distributed in ripe and immature fruits, with and without pulp. In addition, we adopt mechanical and chemical break dormancy mechanisms, different storage periods and seeding depths. After sixteen months of monitoring, the formation of eleven seedlings was obtained without distinction of any treatment. Seedlings and saplings developed slowly, taking two years to emit the first metaphyll. Over time, ten individuals died, most from fungal attack. After ten years, the only surviving palm generated two inflorescences, which produced fruit. The inefficient seedling production and the slow development of saplings, combined with the impact of the extractivism and the high rate of predation of the pyrenes, suggest the low recruitment rate of the species observed, in natural conditions. This type of data is one of the important tools for creating guidelines for the species conservation. Therefore, we suggest considering the reclassification of B. purpurascens as a Critically Endangered species in the Official List of Threatened Brazilian Species of Extinction.


Com ocorrência concentrada no sudoeste goiano, Butia purpurascens tem frutos e folhas amplamente extraídos pela população regional. Coexiste com gramíneas exóticas, queimadas frequentes, além do pastejo e pisoteamento por gado. Os indivíduos jovens raramente são vistos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo fornecer informações sobre propágulos, formação de plântulas e monitoramento de indivíduos jovens de B. purpurascens até adultos em fase reprodutiva. Os frutos foram selecionados, medidos e beneficiados após a colheita. Dos 6.000 frutos coletados, 3.112 foram descartados por estarem perfurados por gorgulhos do gênero Conotrachelus. O experimento dividiu 2.600 frutos em 13 tratamentos, distribuídos em frutos maduros e imaturos, com polpa e despolpados. Além da adoção de mecanismos mecânicos e químicos de quebra de dormência, períodos de armazenamento e profundidades de plantio diferentes. Após 16 meses de monitoramento, a formação de 11 plântulas foi obtida sem distinção de qualquer tratamento. Plântulas e indivíduos jovens se desenvolveram lentamente, levando dois anos para emitir o primeiro metáfilo. Ao longo do tempo, dez indivíduos morreram, a maioria, por ataque fúngico. Após dez anos, a única planta sobrevivente gerou duas inflorescências, as quais produziram frutos. A capacidade de produção de plântulas ineficiente e o lento desenvolvimento das mudas, combinados com o impacto do extrativismo e a alta taxa de predação dos pirênios, sugerem a baixa taxa de recrutamento da espécie observada, em condições naturais. Esse tipo de dado é uma das ferramentas importantes para a criação de diretrizes para a conservação de espécies. Portanto, sugerimos considerar a reclassificação de B. purpurascens como espécie Criticamente Ameaçada na Lista Nacional Oficial de Espécies da Flora Brasileira Ameaçadas de Extinção.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Understanding the phenology of plant populations is vital for their conservation and management. We studied the vegetative and reproductive phenology of the endangered palm Ceroxylon quindiuense along an altitudinal gradient in the Central Cordillera of Colombia. Objective: We describe the leaf production rate, and flowering and fruiting cycles, and calculate food offer for the fauna, as a tool for the proper management of the palm. Methods: At each sampling site (2 400, 2 600, 2 800, 3 000 m.a.s.l.), we marked 40 adult individuals (20 pistillate, 20 staminate), which we followed bimonthly for 24 months. We studied leaf production by counting fallen leaves. We followed flower and fruit production through observations with binoculars and photographs. Results: Each adult individual produced, on average, one leaf every 69 days. Although isolated individuals flowered throughout the year, most palms flowered synchronously at each elevation in October 2016-August 2017 and in August 2018-February 2019 and had ripe fruits 7-13 months later. Flowering started at 2 600 m, followed by 2 800 and 3 000 m. Palms at 2 400 m, the lower limit of the palm stands in the area, showed a singular behavior, with scarce flower and fruit production, some individuals that changed sex, and a higher proportion of pistillate palms. Each palm produced 1-11 (x̄ = 5.3, SD = 2.2) inflorescences and 1-10 (x̄ = 5.3, SD = 2.2) infructescences. The average number of fruits per infructescence was 4 465 (SD = 1 488). With an estimated population of adult palms between 256 000 and 600 000 and an overall ratio of pistillate: staminate individuals 1:1 or 1:2, total fruit production in the area during each fruiting period is estimated as 2.0-7.1 billion fruits. Conclusions: The huge number of flowers and fruits and their gradual availability along the altitudinal gradient have a major impact on the spatial and temporal distribution of food offer for fauna associated with the palm.


Resumen Introducción: Comprender la fenología de las poblaciones de plantas es vital para su conservación y manejo. Estudiamos la fenología vegetativa y reproductiva de la palma amenazada Ceroxylon quindiuense a lo largo de un gradiente altitudinal en la Cordillera Central de Colombia. Objetivo: Describimos la tasa de producción de hojas, los ciclos de floración y fructificación, y calculamos la oferta alimentaria para la fauna, como una herramienta para el adecuado manejo de la palma. Métodos: En cada sitio de muestreo (2 400, 2 600, 2 800, 3 000 m.s.n.m.), marcamos 40 individuos adultos (20 pistilados, 20 estaminados), que seguimos bimestralmente durante 24 meses. Estudiamos la producción de hojas contando las caídas al suelo. Seguimos la producción de flores y frutos a través de observaciones con binoculares y fotografías. Resultados: Cada individuo adulto produjo, en promedio, una hoja cada 69 días. Aunque los individuos aislados florecieron durante todo el año, la mayoría de las palmas florecieron sincrónicamente en cada elevación entre octubre 2016 y agosto 2017 y de agosto 2018 a febrero 2019 y tuvieron frutos maduros entre 7-13 meses después. La floración comenzó a los 2 600 m, seguida de los 2 800 y los 3 000 m. Las palmas a 2 400 m, límite inferior de los palmares de la zona, mostraron un comportamiento singular, con escasa producción de flores y frutos, varios individuos que cambiaron de sexo y una mayor proporción de palmas pistiladas. Cada palma produjo 1-11 (x̄ = 5.3, SD = 2.2) inflorescencias y 1-10 (x̄ = 5.3, SD = 2.2) infrutescencias. El número promedio de frutos por infrutescencia fue de 4 465. Con una población estimada de palmas adultas entre 256 000 y 600 000 y una proporción total de individuos pistilados: estaminados 1:1 o 1:2, la producción total de frutos en el área durante cada período de fructificación se estima en 2.0-7.1 mil millones de frutos. Conclusiones: La gran cantidad de flores y frutos y su progresiva disponibilidad a lo largo del gradiente tienen un impacto importante en la distribución espacial y temporal de la oferta de alimento para la fauna asociada a la palma.

Abstract Brazil is a leading palm oil producer, but the defoliating caterpillars Opsiphanes invirae Hübner Brassolis sophorae L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) can reduce the productivity of this crop. The aim of this study was to evaluate the development and reproduction of the parasitoid Trichospilus diatraeae Cherian & Margabandhu (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in pupae of these oil palm defoliators. Ten O. invirae or B. sophorae pupae with up to two days old were exposed each to 30 T. diatraeae females for 48 hours. Parasitism and emergence of the progeny of T. diatraeae were similar in pupae of both Lepidoptera defoliators. The life cycle of this parasitoid was shorter in O. invirae (21.50 ± 0.42 days) pupae than with those of B. sophorae (27.60 ± 1.80 days). The number of the progeny (669.00 ± 89.62) and dead immature (217.13 ± 58.18) of T. diatraeae were higher in B. sophorae pupae than in those of O. invirae with 447.83 ± 51.52 and 13.50 ± 5.23, respectively. The sex ratio and female and male longevity of T. diatraeae emerged from these hosts were similar. The reproductive traits, especially the number of individuals (offspring) of T. diatraeae were better with B. sophorae pupae than with those of O. invirae.


Resumo O Brasil é um dos principais produtores de óleo de palma, porém as lagartas desfolhadoras Opsiphanes invirae Hübner e Brassolis sophorae L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) podem comprometer a produtividade dessa cultura. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento e aspectos reprodutivos do parasitoide Trichospilus diatraeae Cherian & Margabandhu (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) em pupas desses desfolhadores da palma de óleo. Dez pupas de O. invirae ou de B. sophorae com até dois dias de idade, foram expostas, cada uma, ao parasitismo por 30 fêmeas de T. diatraeae , por 48 horas. O parasitismo e a emergência da progênie de T. diatraeae foram semelhantes em pupas de ambas as espécies de lepidópteros desfolhadores da palma de óleo. O ciclo de vida desse parasitoide foi mais curto em pupas de O. invirae (21,50 ± 0,42 dias) que com as de B. sophorae (27,60 ± 1,80 dias). O número de progênie (669,00 ± 89,62) e de imaturos mortos (217,13 ± 58,18) de T. diatraeae foram maiores em pupas de B. sophorae que naquelas de O. invirae com 447,83 ± 51,52 e 13,50 ± 5,23, respectivamente. A razão sexual e a longevidade de fêmeas e machos de T. diatraeae emergidos desses hospedeiros foram semelhantes. As características reprodutivas, especialmente, o número de indivíduos (progênie) de T. diatraeae foram melhores com pupas de B. sophorae que com as de O. invirae .

Babassu, Attalea speciosa (Arecaceae) is a ruderal palm native to Amazonia, which turned dominant in frequently burned lands throughout the arc of deforestation and other degraded lands, in extreme cases attaining complete dominance. This study investigated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as one possible explanation for the outstanding ecological success of this exceptional palm. We explored the relationships between the babassu palm and native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and babassu effects on the AMF richness and mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) in the eastern periphery of Amazonia. For this purpose, we sampled topsoil (0-20 cm) at the onset of the rainy season from a 5-year-old secondary forest regrowth (SEC) area with three levels of babassu dominance (sites with 10, 50 and 70% babassu biomass shares), and at three distances (0, 2.5 and 4 m) from isolated babassu patches within a degraded pasture (PAS), both with five replications per treatment. Glomerospore density varied from 100 to 302 per gram of soil, 56% higher in SEC than PAS. We identified a total of 16 AMF species, with dominance of Acaulospora (six species) followed by Glomus (three species). AMF richness increased with babassu dominance in SEC sites, and reduced with distance from babassu patches within the PAS. The colonization rate of babassu roots was higher in SEC than in PAS, whereas MIP was similar in both areas and without treatment differences. Our study points to strong mycorrhizal association of the babassu palm as a potential mechanism for its outstanding ecological success in degraded lands.


Babaçu, Attalea speciosa (Arecaceae) é uma palmeira ruderal nativa da Amazônia, dominante em terras frequentemente queimadas ao longo do arco de desmatamento e outras áreas degradadas, em casos extremos atingindo domínio completo. Este estudo investigou os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) como possível explicação do sucesso ecológico desta palmeira. Nós exploramos as relações entre o babaçu e glomerosporos, efeitos do babaçu na riqueza destes fungos e o potencial do inóculo micorrízico (PIM) na periferia oriental da Amazônia. Amostras de solo (0-20 cm) foram coletadas no início da estação chuvosa em uma área de floresta secundária (SEC) de cinco anos de idade e três níveis de dominância do babaçu (10, 50 e 70% de biomassa de babaçu) e a três distâncias (0; 2,5 e 4 m) de ilhas de babaçu isoladas em uma pastagem degradada (PAS), ambas com cinco repetições por tratamento. A densidade de esporos de FMA variou de 100 a 302 por grama de solo, sendo 56% maior em SEC do que em PAS. Dezesseis espécies de FMA foram identificadas, com predominância de Acaulospora (seis espécies) seguidos do gênero Glomus (três espécies). A riqueza destes fungos aumentou com o domínio da palmeira em SEC e reduziu com a distância das ilhas de babaçu em PAS. A taxa de colonização das raízes de babaçu foi superior nas áreas de SEC enquanto o PIM não apresentou diferenças entre os tratamentos. Nosso estudo aponta a uma forte associação micorrhízica da palmeira babaçu, um possível mecanismo central no seu sucesso ecológico em áreas degradadas.

Abstract In this study, I tested the effect of Syagrus loefgrenii nut number on the removal intensity by rodents across seasons. Also, I assessed both S. loefgrenii fruit production, and dispersion pattern to analyze the relationship between these parameters and nut removal. Trials were performed (autumn, winter, spring, and summer), in which endocarps were placed inside trays (5, 15, and 40 endocarps) in the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna). Syagrus loefgrenii exhibited clumped distribution, although its local density had no correlation with endocarp removal rate. Despite of variations, S. loefgrenii fruit production had no seasonal difference, although, high proportions of endocarps were year round removed. This mostly results from nearly complete endocarp loss in depots of 5 and 15, while the opposite occurred in those of 40. Hence, the intensity of removal consistently decreases with endocarp number, so that endocarp removal conformed to negative distance-dependence. As this palm exhibit clumped distribution and, in principle, fruit asynchronously, if, at least, a group of neighboring stems bore fruits simultaneously, an enhanced number of nuts might be available at a given site. Therefore, seeds within a dense S. loefgrenii fruit patch might experience high survival rates due to satiation of post dispersal seed predators.


Resumo Neste estudo, testei o efeito da densidade de endocarpos de Syagrus loefgrenii sobre a intensidade de remoção por roedores conforme a estação do ano. Também, avaliei tanto a produção de frutos, quanto o padrão de dispersão dessa palmeira em relação à intensidade de remoção de endocarpos. Executei experimentos no Cerrado (outono, inverno, primavera e verão), nos quais acondicionei 5, 15 e 40 endocarpos em pratos plásticos perfurados (pilhas experimentais). Syagrus loefgrenii exibiu distribuição agrupada. Apesar disso, a densidade local dessa palmeira em nenhuma estação esteve correlacionada com a taxa de remoção de endocarpos. Não ocorreram diferenças temporais significativas quanto aos níveis de frutificação, e, simultaneamente, documentei intensa remoção de endocarpos. Isso ocorreu, sobretudo, nas pilhas com 5 e 15 endocarpos, as quais, na maioria dos casos, perderam quase todos endocarpos. No entanto, as pilhas com 40 perderam poucos diásporos. Nesse sentido a intensidade de remoção decresceu consistentemente conforme o número de endocarpos, tal que esse processo mostrou ser negativamente dependente da distância. Syagrus loefgrenii exibiu padrão agrupado de distribuição, além de produzir frutos assincronicamente. Nesse sentido, caso um grupo de palmeiras vizinhas frutifique simultaneamente, uma grande quantidade de diásporos estará disponível em um dado local. Portanto, sementes em meio a uma densa carga de frutos podem ser favorecidas, uma vez que predadores pós-dispersão seriam saciados.

ResumenLos mamíferos y las palmas son importantes elementos de la fauna y flora en el neotrópico. Por lo tanto, las interacciones entre ellos son una de las relaciones ecológicas más significativas en estos ecosistemas. Con el fin de identificar la importancia de los mamíferos que consumen los frutos de la palma Mauritia flexuosa y determinar su participación en la dispersión y depredación de sus semillas, se instalaron trampas cámara en frente de cúmulos de semillas caídas y de racimos con frutos. Con los videos obtenidos se preparó un catálogo de especies. Además, se clasificaron y cuantificaron los comportamientos de forrajeo exhibidos. También se utilizaron dos tratamientos de exclusión con tres repeticiones. En el tratamiento abierto se permitió el libre acceso de mamíferos pequeños, medianos y grandes, mientras que en el tratamiento semi-abierto se cercó la parcela con malla metálica dejando cuatro aberturas en la base para permitir el acceso y evaluar la remoción de semillas por mamíferos pequeños y medianos. Se registraron 19 especies de mamíferos, de las cuales nueve se alimentaron de los frutos de la palma y cinco de éstas fueron dispersoras de semillas. Se reporta por primera vez el consumo de los frutos de M. flexuosa por pare de Atelocynus microtis. La especie con mayor importancia relativa fue Dasyprocta fuliginosa, que mostro el mayor porcentaje de dispersión de semillas (63.5%) en comparación con las otras especies. Tayassu pecari fue identificado como consumidor in situ, porque consume hasta el 45.3 % de las semillas, sin dispersarlas. El número de semillas consumidas in situ en el tratamiento abierto mostró diferencias significativas con respecto al tratamiento semi-abierto, lo que sugiere una mayor participación de los mamíferos grandes en este proceso. En conclusión, los frutos de M. flexuosa son una fuente alimenticia importante para la comunidad de mamíferos. Además, el consumo de las semillas bajo la copa de la palma madre, el cual favorece la mortalidad de las mismas por efectos densodependientes, es proporcionalmente mayor que la dispersión. Generalmente la presión ejercida por las especies frugívoras sobre las semillas puede moldear las estrategias reproductivas de las especies de plantas. Sin embargo se deben realizar investigaciones sobre dispersión efectiva, distancias de dispersión y efectos demográficos, para determinar la función específica de los mamíferos medianos y grandes en la ecología de esta palma.


AbstractMammals and palms are important elements of fauna and flora in the Neotropics, and their interactions, such as fruit consumption and seed dispersal, are one of the most important ecological relationships in these ecosystems. The main objective of this study was to identify the relative importance of mammals in the dispersal and predation of Mauritia flexuosa palm fruits. We installed camera-traps in front of palm fallen seeds and clusters with fruits. A catalog of species was prepared with the recorded videos and the foraging behaviors exhibited were classified and identified. In addition, two exclusion treatments with three repetitions each were used. In the semi-open treatment, a plot was fenced with metal mesh leaving four openings in order to allow access only to small and medium sized mammals, while in the open treatment, the small, medium and large sized mammals had free access. In both cases, seed removal was evaluated. We recorded a total of 19 species of mammals, nine of which fed on palm fruits and the other five were seed dispersers. We reported for the first time the consumption of Mauritia flexuosa fruits by Atelocynus microtis. The species with the highest relative importance was Dasyprocta fuliginosa, which showed the highest percentage of seed dispersal (63.5%) compared to the other species. Tayassu peccary was identified as an in situ consumer, eating 45.3% of seeds without dispersing them. The number of seeds consumed in situ in the open treatment showed significant differences regarding the semi-open treatment, suggesting greater involvement of large mammals in this process. In conclusion, the fruits of M. flexuosa are an important food source for the local mammal community. Additionally, the consumption of seeds under the canopy of the mother palm is proportionally greater than their dispersion. Generally, the pressure of frugivorous species over seeds may determine the reproductive strategies of plants. However, research on effective dispersion, dispersal distances and demographic impact should be conducted to determine the specific role of medium and large sized mammals in the ecology of this palm. ABSTRACT

Butia purpurascens is an endemic and threatened palm tree species that occurs in open areas of the Brazilian Cerrado, predominantly in southwestern Goiás. The leaves of this palm tree are harvested by local people to fabricate brooms. This study evaluated changes in vegetative and reproductive phenology in two different natural populations of this palm tree: one population with leaf harvesting and another non-harvested population. Twenty plants were monitored in each area for 23 months. The phenophases were related to the temperature and precipitation averages for a 30-year period. Leaf sprouting occurred throughout the year, with a slight reduction in periods of low temperatures and low rainfall. The first spathes emerged in March and flowering began during the dry season (June), continuing until January of the following year, concurrent with the period of most intense fruiting. Flowering and fruiting appear to be triggered by periods of drought, which are commonly observed in the Cerrado. The harvested sites produced significantly fewer leaves, spathes, inflorescences and infructescences than the non-harvested sites. Thus, the supply of resources to the local fauna is possibly reduced in sites under leaf exploitation, which in the long term can represent damage to the palm tree population’s structure and dynamics. Other socioeconomic and ecological studies about the effects of leaf harvesting in B. purpurascens are necessary to enable strategies for sustainable use, devise management alternatives and conserve this threatened palm species.


Butia purpurascens é uma palmeira endêmica e ameaçada que ocorre em áreas de cerrado sentido restrito do sudoeste goiano e tem suas folhas extraídas pela população local para a confecção de vassouras. O estudo avaliou variações na fenologia vegetativa e reprodutiva em duas populações naturais da palmeira em Jataí, GO: uma área sem extração e outra com extrativismo foliar. Vinte indivíduos foram monitorados em cada área durante 23 meses. As fenofases foram relacionadas às medias de temperatura e precipitação por um período de 30 anos. O brotamento foliar ocorreu ao longo de todo o ano, embora tenha reduzido nos períodos de menor temperatura e pluviosidade. A emissão das primeiras espatas se iniciou em março e a floração teve início durante a estação seca (junho), perdurando até janeiro do ano seguinte, concomitante ao período de intensa frutificação. Floração e frutificação parecem ser desencadeadas por períodos de estiagem, comum no Cerrado brasileiro. Áreas com extração produziram número significativamente menor de folhas, espatas, inflorescências e infrutescências do que áreas sem extração. Assim, a oferta de recursos para a fauna local é reduzida em áreas sob extrativismo, o que pode prejudicar a estrutura e a dinâmica populacional da palmeira, em longo prazo. Outros estudos sócio-econômicas e ecológicos sobre os efeitos da extração foliar em B. purpurascens são necessários para permitir estratégias de exploração sustentável, alternativas de manejo e a conservação dessa espécie atualmente ameaçada.

ABSTRACT

The understanding of pollination mechanisms is vital for developing management and conservation actions of economically important species. In order to understand the pollination mechanisms of the promising palms in the genus Oenocarpus (Arecaceae), we studied floral morphology and biology, of three sympatric species in the Colombian Amazon: O. bataua, O. balickii and O. minor. During the period 2010-2012 we made direct and continuous observations of inflorescences (visitors, pollinators, and reproductive success) of the three species in every development phase. We determined the association of the palms with their floral visitors through a complex or interaction network, whereas specificity or preference of the insects for each individual palm was assessed through paired similarity analysis, similarity analysis (ANOSIM), and ordering analysis based on non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMSD). The three species flowered throughout the year; their inflorescences have long rachillae that hang close to each other from a short rachis, and they bear flowers in dyads or triads. Inflorescences are protandrous, thermogenic; anthesis takes place during daytime but pollination is nocturnal. We recorded 79 species of insects, mainly beetles, 33 of which visited O. balickii, 63 visited O. bataua, and 33 visited O. minor. Although they shared some visitors, their abundance during the pistillate phase, as well as their pollen loads showed that only a few species of Curculionidae and Nitidulidae are the principal pollinators of the three studied species. Differences in network structure between staminate and pistillate phases, as well as difference in abundance found with the ANOSIM and NMSD similarity tests, suggest a high specificity of pollinators, leading to reproductive isolation among the three species. Because all pollinating beetles were found to develop their life cycles within the inflorescences, we hypothesize the occurrence of a specialized system of mutual dependence between each of this three Oenocarpus species and their pollinators. La comprensión de los mecanismos de polinización son de gran importancia para el desarrollo de planes de manejo y acciones de conservación de las especies de importancia económica. Con el objeto de conocer los mecanismos de polinización de palmas promisorias del género Oenocarpus (Arecaceae), se estudió la morfología, la biología floral, los visitantes, los polinizadores y éxito reproductivo de tres especies simpátricas en la Amazonía colombiana: O. bataua, O. balickii y O. minor. Durante el período 2010-2012 realizamos observaciones directas durante las fases de desarrollo de las inflorescencias en las tres especies. Se determinó la asociación de las palmas con sus visitantes florales a través de una red compleja, mientras que la especificidad o la preferencia de los insectos por cada palma individual se evaluó mediante el análisis similitud pareada, análisis de similitud (ANOSIM), un análisis de ordenación a partir del escalamiento multidimensional no métrico (NMSD). Las tres palmas florescen todo el año; sus inflorescencias contienen raquilas que cuelgan de un raquis corto, y presentan flores agrupadas en díadas o tríadas. Las inflorescencias son protandras, termogénicas; la antesis tiene lugar durante el día, pero la polinización es nocturna. Se registraron 79 especies de insectos, principalmente coleópteros, 33 de los cuales visitaron O. balickii, 63 a O. bataua y 33 a O. minor. Aunque compartían algunos visitantes, su abundancia en la fase pistilada, así como la carga de polen mostró que sólo unas pocas especies de Curculionidae y Nitidulidae son los polinizadores de las tres especies. Las diferencias en la estructura de la red entre las fases estaminadas y pistiladas, así como la diferencia en la abundancia encontrada con las pruebas de similitud ANOSIM y NMSD, sugieren una alta especificidad de polinizadores, lo que lleva a un aislamiento reproductivo entre las tres especies. Debido a que se encontró que todas las especies de coleópteros polinizadores desarrollan su ciclo de vida dentro de las inflorescencias de cada palma, se sugiere la presencia de un sistema especializado y de mutua dependencia entre los polinizadores y las especies de Oenocarpus. Esta especialización garantiza la disponibilidad de polinizadores durante todo el año.

The main threats to natural populations in terrestrial ecosystems have been widly recognized to be the habitat fragmentation and the exploitation of forest products. In this study, we compared the density of the populations and the structure of three tropical palm species, Astrocaryum aculeatissimum, Euterpe edulis and Geonoma schottiana. For this, we selected five forest fragments of different sizes (3 500ha, 2 400ha, 57ha, 21ha and 19ha) where palms were censused in nine 30x30m plots. We tracked the palms survival from 2005 to 2007, and recorded all new individuals encountered. Each individual was assigned in one of the five ontogenetic stages: seedling, infant, juvenile, immature and reproductive. The demographic structure of each palm species was analyzed and compared by a generalized linear model (GLM). The analysis was performed per palm spe-cies. The forest fragment area and the year of observation were explanatory variables, and the proportion of individuals in each ontogenetic class and palm density were response variables. The total number of individuals (from seedlings to reproductives, of all species) monitored was 6 450 in 2005, 7 268 in 2006, and 8 664 in 2007. The densities of two palm species were not influenced by the size of the fragment, but the population density of A. aculeatissimum was dependent on the size of the fragment: there were more individuals in the bigger than in the smaller forest fragments. The population structure of A. aculeatissimum, E. edulis, and G. schottiana was not altered in the smaller fragments, except the infants of G. schottiana. The main point to be drawn from the results found in this study is that the responses of density and population structure seem not to be dependent on fragment size, except for one species that resulted more abundant in bigger fragments.


Uno de los principales riesgos que corren las poblaciones naturales de los ecosistemas terrestres es la fragmentación de hábitat y la explotación de los recursos forestales. Aquí hemos comparado la densidad de las poblaciones y el estado estructural de tres especies de palmeras, Astrocaryum aculeatissimum (Schott) Burret, Euterpe edulis Mart. y Geonoma schottiana Mart., en fragmentos de diferente tamaño. Las palmas fueron censadas en nueve cuadrantes de 30x30m en cinco fragmentos de bosque de diferente tamaño (3 500ha, 2 400ha, 57ha, 21ha y 19ha). Realizamos el seguimiento de la sobrevivencia de las palmas entre 2005-2007, y registramos todos los nuevos individuos encontrados. Cada individuo fue designado dentro de alguno de los siguientes cinco estadíos ontogenéticos: plántula, infantil, juvenil, inmaduro y reproductivo. La comparación de la estructura demográfica fue analizada usando Modelos Lineares Generalizados (GLM). Estos fueron utilizados para cada especie por separado, con el área del fragmento de bosque y el año como variables explicativas, así como proporción de individuos en cada estadío ontogenético y densidad de las palmeras como variables de respuesta. El número total de individuos monitoreado (desde semillas hasta adultos reproductivos, para todas las especies) fue 6 450 en 2005, 7 268 en 2006 y 8 664 en 2007. La densidad de población para dos especies de palmas no fue influenciada por el tamaño del fragmento, excepto para Astrocaryum aculeatissimum, cuya densidad dependió del tamaño del fragmento. Hubo más individuos en los fragmentos mayores que en los fragmentos menores. La estructura de la población de A. aculeatissimum, E. edulis y G. schottiana no se vio alterada en los fragmentos pequeños, excepto para G. schottiana en estado infante. El punto principal que se desprende de los resultados encontrados en este estudio es que la respuesta de la densidad y estructura de la población parece no ser dependiente del tamaño de fragmento, excepto para una especie que es más abundante en los fragmentos mayores.

ABSTRACT

Arecaceae is a family rich in species and provides resources for the subsistence of human groups in the tropical regions. The aim of this work was to assess the richness, diversity, composition, and use patterns of the family Arecaceae in three communities of the Medio Atrato, Chocó, Colombia, in order to obtain useful information to support the sustainable use and conservation of this plant groups in the biogeographical area of the Colombian Chocó. The fieldwork was carried out between 2009 and 2010 in the localities of Beté, Tanguí and El Buey in the municipality of Medio Atrato. In each of the communities, a total of ten plots of 80×5m 400m²; 0.4ha per zone were established and all individuals of palm species were counted and recorded. On the other hand, information on use types and useful organs was also recorded in each community through informal interviews. A total of 29 species and 18 genera were recorded. Bactris 24.13and Wettinia 10.34 were the genera with most species richness. El Buey showed more species and genera richness 23 species, 17 genera than Beté 15, 10 and Tanguí 14, 11. The floristic similarity among the three communities was less than 45. The species with higher use and ecological value were: Euterpe oleracea, Oenocarpus bataua, Attalea allennii, Manicaria saccifera, Bactris gassipaes and Wettinia quinaria. The categories of use with higher number of species and cultural importance were construction, food and handicraft. The most used structures of the palms were the stems and fruits. In conclusion, the results indicate that the Medio Atrato has high richness and diversity of palm species in a regional and national context. However, the relationship between number of use and ecological importance of the species depends on the locality and show that the socio-cultural significance of the palm species may vary among groups of people who share a same culture or biogeographic region. Future studies should be conducted to determine the role of the type of organ used as raw material on the demographic and ecological dynamic of the palm populations in the Chocó and other Neotropical regions.


La familia Arecaceae es rica en especies, principalmente en el trópico, y constituye una fuente de recursos para la subsistencia de sus pobladores. En el presente trabajo se estudió la riqueza, diversidad, composición y patrones de uso de la familia Arecaceae en tres localidades de la cuenca media del río Atrato en el Chocó, Colombia, con el fin de obtener información que permita su conservación y uso sostenible. Se registraron 29 especies en 18 géneros, siendo Bactris 24.13 y Wettinia 10.34 los géneros más ricos en especies. El Buey mostró más especies y géneros 23 especies, 17 géneros que Beté 15 y 10 respectivamente y Tanguí 14 y 11 respectivamente. La similitud florística entre localidades fue menor al 45. Las especies con mayor peso ecológico y valor de uso fueron: Euterpe oleracea Mart., Oenocarpus bataua Mart., Attalea allennii H.E. Moore, Manicaria saccifera Gaertn., Bactris gassipaes Kunth y Wettinia quinaria O.F.Cook y Doyle R. Bernal. Las categorías de uso con mayor riqueza de especies e importancia cultural fueron: construcción, alimento y uso artesanal; y los órganos más usados fueron tallos y frutos. Los resultados de este trabajo demuestran que el Atrato Medio posee alta riqueza y diversidad de especies de palmas en un contexto regional y nacional. Sin embargo, la relación entre el número de uso y la importancia ecológica de la especie depende de la localidad, lo que indica que la importancia socio-cultural de la especie puede variar entre grupos humanos que comparten una misma cultura o región biogeográfica. Se publicarán estudios a futuro para determinar el papel del tipo de órgano utilizado como materia prima en la demografía y dinámica ecológica de las poblaciones de palma en el Chocó y otras regiones del Neotrópico.

The neotropical palm Euterpe precatoria is subject to extraction for its valuable palm heart. The development of management and conservation practices for this species requires understanding of its population structure, dynamics, and traditional use across the range of environments it inhabits, from different successional stages in continuous forest to forest fragments. Here, we analyzed how the population structure of E. precatoria varies with successional stage, fragmentation, and exposure to extraction. Since E. precatoria recruitment increases with disturbance, we expected seedling density to be higher in secondary forests and fragments relative to primary forests. The study was conducted from 2007-2008 in the Caribbean Slope of Costa Rica at Braulio Carrillo National Park (BCNP), La Selva Biological Station (LSBS), Manú Center, and Finca El Progreso (FEP). The first two sites had continuous primary and secondary forests (BCNP had one extracted primary forest); the last two consisted of primary forest fragments. Population structure was variable, with greater densities in the extracted primary forest, and in the secondary forests, as compared to primary forests and fragments. Palms <5m across all sites represented 50-90% of the total number of individuals. In sites that suffered historical over-extraction, local communities have lost the tradition of consuming this species. Understanding how population dynamics is affected by extraction and succession is essential to the design of sustainable management programs rooted in community participation.


La palma neotropical Euterpe precatoria sufre un proceso de extracción ilegal debido al sabor y calidad de su palmito. El desarrollo de prácticas de manejo y conservación de esta especie requiere de la comprensión de su estructura y dinámica poblacional en los diferentes ambientes que coloniza. Analizamos cómo la estructura poblacional de E. precatoria varió con el estadio sucesional, la fragmentación y la exposición a la extracción. Esperábamos que la densidad de plántulas fuera mayor en bosques secundarios y fragmentos en relación con los bosques primarios. El estudio se realizó entre 2007-2008 en la vertiente del Caribe de Costa Rica en el Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, la Estación Biológica La Selva, el Centro Manú y la Finca El Progreso. Los dos primeros sitios tenían bosques primarios y secundarios continuos (Braulio Carrillo tenía además un bosque primario extraído), mientras que los dos últimos representaban fragmentos de bosques primarios con una historia previa de extracción. La mayor densidad de plántulas se encontró en el bosque primario extraído y en los bosques secundarios, mientras que las palmas reproductivas fueron más comunes en los bosques primarios y en los fragmentos. Las palmas <5m en todos los sitios representaron el 50-90% del número total de individuos. En los sitios que históricamente sufrieron sobre-extracción, las comunidades perdieron la tradición de consumir esta especie. Comprender los factores que afectan la estructura poblacional es esencial para el diseño de programas de gestión sostenible basados en la participación comunitaria.

Seed dispersal is a key process that determines the spatial structure and dynamics of populations of plants, establishes the potential area of recruitment and in this way, the basis for subsequent processes such as predation, germination, competition and growth. The purpose of this research was to identify the guild of frugivores of the Oenocapus bataua palm in fragments of Andean forest, determine the effective dispersers and relate the spatial distribution of palm populations with the dispersion of seeds. To this end, between August 2005-June 2006, observations of the removal of fruits from eight clusters were done, and counting of consumption of fruits beneath 78 palms with mature fruits was undertaken; focal observations of 13 individuals during 90 hours; registration of frugivory with photographic traps during 165 days/nights for a total of 195 photographs and 144 consumption events; experiments with dispersion using 751 perforated fruits/seeds attached to strings and finally, plots to determine spatial distribution all were carried out. In the study area at least five species of mammals ate, dispersed, buried (Sciurus granatensis, Microsciurus mimulus, Dasyprocta punctata y Proechimys sp.), cover (Marmosa robinsoni) and carried the fruits of O. bataua off to caves (Marmosa robinsoni y Proechimys sp.) without damaging the seed. A 21.7% of the fruits were dispersed, 13.2 gnawed or peeled, 5.6% covered, buried and carried to caves. The average distance of removal of seeds and fruits was 3.1m although in a lesser proportion, dispersion events of >50m were recorded. The abundant production of fruits, their size and weight, their intense removal by frugivores, the short dispersion distances, the absence of large size frugivores (reduced by hunting and fragmentation), that might perform long-distance dispersion, and the increase of rodents, especially squirrels, that strongly pressure the fruit resource, generate a spatially restricted ...


En zonas bajas tropicales, en bosques continuos y relativamente poco intervenidos, los frutos de la palma Oenocarpus bataua Mart., son consumidos por diversas especies de vertebrados, sin embargo, no hay estudios de dispersión de más largo plazo con esta especie. Entre agosto 2005-septiembre 2006 se realizaron observaciones de remoción de frutos, conteo de frutos comidos, observaciones focales, registros de frugivoría mediante trampas fotográficas, experimentos de dispersión y parcelas para determinar distribución espacial de Oenocarpus bataua. Cinco especies de mamíferos comen, dispersan, entierran (Sciurus granatensis, Microsciurus mimulus, Dasyprocta punctata y Proechimys sp.), tapan (Marmosa robinsoni) y llevan a las cuevas (Marmosa robinsoni y Proechimys sp.), los frutos de O. bataua, sin dañar la semilla. El 21.7% de los frutos fueron dispersados, 13.2% roídos o pelados, 5.6% tapados, enterrados y llevados a cuevas. La distancia media de remoción de semillas y frutos fue 3.1m, aunque en menor proporción se registraron eventos de dispersión > a 50m. La abundante producción, el tamaño, el peso, la intensa remoción de los frutos por frugívoros, las cortas distancias de dispersión, la ausencia de frugívoros de gran porte disminuidos por cacería y fragmentación, encargados de la dispersión de larga distancia y el aumento de roedores, especialmente ardillas que presionan fuertemente el recurso frutos, generan una lluvia de semillas espacialmente restringida, posiblemente responsable de los patrones de distribución agregados en semillas, plántulas y posteriormente en juveniles y sub-adultos.

Palms are distinctive plants of tropics and have peculiar allometric relations. Understanding such relations is useful in the case of introduced species because their ability to establish and invade must be clarified in terms of their responses in the new site. Our purpose was to assess the survival and invasive capacity of an introduced palm species in the Atlantic rainforest, Euterpe oleracea Mart., compared to the native Euterpe edulis Mart. and to the hybrids produced between the two species. Considering this, we compared the allometry in different ontogenetic stages, the germination rates, and aspects of the initial development. The ontogenetic stages proposed for both Euterpe illustrated the growth patterns described for palm trees. E. oleracea and hybrids adjusted to the geometric similarity allometric model, while E. edulis presented a slope greater than would be expected considering this model, indicating a greater height for a given diameter. E. oleracea showed the same amount of pulp per fruit as E. edulis and a similar initial development of seedlings. The main differences observed were a lower germination rate and a faster height gain of E. oleracea seedlings. We conclude that E. oleracea, which is similar to E. edulis in aspects of allometry, development, seed and seedling morphology, may be an important competitor of this native palm tree in the Atlantic Forest.


Palmeiras são plantas características dos trópicos que apresentam relações alométricas peculiares. Compreender tais padrões pode ser útil no caso de espécies introduzidas, uma vez que sua habilidade de estabelecimento e invasão deve ser esclarecida em relação as suas respostas à nova localidade. Nosso propósito foi compreender a sobrevivência e a capacidade de invasão de uma palmeira introduzida na floresta Atlântica, Euterpe oleracea Mart. (açaizeiro) comparada à palmeira nativa Euterpe edulis Mart. (juçara), também considerando seus híbridos. Para isso comparamos suas relações alométricas em estádios ontogenéticos, sua germinação e seu desenvolvimento inicial. Os estádios ontogenéticos propostos para ambas as Euterpe ilustraram os padrões de crescimento esperados para palmeiras. E. oleracea e híbridos apresentaram-se sob o modelo alométrico de similaridade geométrica e E. edulis apresentou inclinação maior do que este modelo. E. oleracea produziu a mesma quantidade de polpa por fruto que E. edulis. As principais diferenças observadas foram menor taxa de germinação e maior velocidade de crescimento em altura para as plântulas de E. oleracea. Em conclusão, nossos resultados indicam que E. oleracea, sendo similar a E. edulis em termos de alometria, desenvolvimento e morfologia de sementes e plântulas, pode ser um importante competidor para a espécies nativa na Floresta Atlântica.

Population dynamics of the palm Euterpe oleracea (Arecaceae) from flooded forests in Choco, Colombian Pacific. The palm Euterpe oleracea is a dominant and promising species in flood plains of the Atrato river, Choco region of Colombia. We assessed the population dynamics of this species through growth rates, mortality and recruitment patterns for a period of two and a half years. Dynamic rates were compared among mixed and pure flood plain palm forests. These forests types were associated to different flooding regimes. Trees and palms were thinned in a portion for each forest type, the rest was left undisturbed. We used projection matrices to follow population trends. Thinning increased the transition probability of smaller individuals, but decreased it for larger individuals, as is typical of light demanding species. Thinning also increased mortality rates in almost all size classes, but did not affect recruitment rates. Under natural conditions, the E. oleracea populations are in equilibrium in pure and mixed forests. Thinning increased population growth in both forest types, suggesting the role played by density-dependent processes on the population size of this species. Rev. Biol. Trop. 58 (1): 465-481. La palma Euterpe oleracea es una especie dominante y promisoria en el plano inundable del río Atrato, región del Chocó, Colombia. Nosotros evaluamos la dinámica poblacional de esta especie a través de las tasas de crecimiento, la mortalidad y los patrones de reclutamiento para un período de dos años y medio. La dinámica de las tasas fue comparada entre bosques de palma mixto y puro. Estos tipos de vegetación fueron asociados con diferentes regimenes de inundación. Árboles y palmas fueron cortados en una porción de cada tipo de bosque, el resto no fue alterado. Nosotros utilizamos proyecciones matriciales para determinar las tendencias de las poblaciones. Las cortas incrementaron las probabilidades de transición de individuos pequeños pero disminuyeron las de individuos grandes, como es típico de las especies heliófitas. Las cortas también incrementaron las tasas de mortalidad en casi todas las categorías de tamaño pero no afectaron las tasas de reclutamiento. Bajo condiciones naturales, las poblaciones de E. oleracea están en equilibrio en los bosques puro y mixto. Las cortas aumentaron el crecimiento poblacional en ambos tipos de bosque, lo que sugiere el rol desempeñado por procesos denso-dependientes sobre el tamaño poblacional de esta especie.

The effect of forest exploitation on structure, diversity, and floristic composition of palmitodominated Atlantic forests at Misiones, Argentina. The effect of forest exploitation - timber and palmito (Euterpe edulis, Palmae) extraction -on structure, diversity, and floristic composition of forests known as palmitals of the Atlantic Forest of Argentina was analyzed. These palmitals are located in Misiones (54 °13’ W and 25°41´ S). Three 1 ha permanent plots were established: two in the "intangible" zone of the Iguazu National Park (PNI), and another in an exploited forest site bordering the PNI. Three 0.2 ha non-permanent plots were also measured. One was located in the PNI reserve zone where illegal palmito extraction occurs. The other two were in logged forest. All trees and palmitos with DBH> 10 cm were identified and DBH and height were measured. For each of the six sites, richness and diversity of tree species, floristic composition, number of endemic species, and density of harvestable tree species were estimated. The harvest of E. edulis increases density of other tree species, diminishing palmito density. Forest explotation (logging and palmito harvest) is accompanied by an increase in diversity and density of heliophilic species, which have greater timber value in the region. However, this explotation also diminishes the density of palmito, of endemic species which normally grow in low densities, and of species found on the IUCN Red List. Results suggest that forest structure may be managed for timber and palmito production. The "intangible" zone of the PNI has the greatest conservation value in the Atlantic Forest, since a greater number of endemisms and endangered species are found here. Rev. Biol. Se analizó el efecto del aprovechamiento forestal (maderero y de la extracción de palmitos; Euterpe edulis, Palmae), sobre la estructura, diversidad y composición florística de los bosques denominados palmitales de la Selva Atlántica Argentina (54 °13’ W, 25°41´ S), en la provincia de Misiones, Argentina. Se establecieron 3 ha de parcelas permanentes, dos ubicadas en la zona intangible del Parque Nacional Iguazú (PNI) y otra en un sitio aprovechado forestalmente lindante. Se midieron tres parcelas no permanentes cada una de 0.2 ha. Una se ubicó en la zona de reserva del PNI donde hay extracciones ilegales de palmito. Las otras dos estaban en sitios con aprovechamiento forestal. Todos los árboles y palmitos DAP> 10 cm fueron identificados y se les midió DAP y altura. Para cada uno de los 6 sitios se estimó riqueza y diversidad de especies arbóreas, composición específica, número de especies endémicas y densidad de árboles de especies aprovechables forestalmente. La riqueza y diversidad de especies se correlacionó con la densidad de palmito. Los índices de Shannon de los sitios se compararon con la prueba t y la corrección de Bonferroni. Las estructuras diamétricas considerando todos lo árboles y solo las especies maderables se compararon con la prueba de Duncan. El aprovechamiento de E. edulis aumenta la densidad de otras especies arbóreas, disminuyendo la densidad de palmitos. El aprovechamiento forestal va acompañado de un aumento en la diversidad y en la densidad de especies heliofilas que son las que tienen mayor valor maderero en la región. Este aprovechamiento disminuye la densidad de palmitos, de especies endémicas que normalmente ocurren en bajas densidades y de especies que se encuentran en la lista roja de la UICN. Los resultados sugieren que se puede manejar la estructura del bosque para la producción de maderera y de palmito. La zona intangible del PNI es la que tiene mayor valor para la conservación de la Selva Atlántica ya que en él se encuentran mayor número de endemismos y las especies en peligro de extinción.

Desmoncus orthacanthos is a Neotropical climbing palm that resembles rattan and therefore has similar potential applications. The genus Desmoncus (subfamily Arecoideae, subtribe Bactridinae) is distributed throughout the Americas, from veracruz, Mexico, to Brazil and Bolivia. The anatomical characteristics of its support tissue have not been thoroughly studied, although some observations from Central American artisans suggest that the stems collected from undisturbed sites possess better characteristics; these include a good capacity to withstand bending without breaking (i.e. higher fracture strength than plants from disturbed sites). Stem samples were collected from individuals from disturbed and undisturbed sites, at three points along the length of the stem (basal, medium and apical). Collections were made of one ramet from five individuals (n=5) at both sites. Each ramet was divided into three sections: basal, from soil surface to a height of 0.5 m; medium, from a height of 0.5 to 5.0 m; and apical, from a height 5.0 to 10.0 m. An anatomical analysis including vascular bundles, parenchyma elements and fibers was performed in the radial direction and also along the longitudinal direction of the stems. The amount of vascular bundles was greater for samples from undisturbed site stems; the amount of parenchyma cells differ between samples from both sites and the amount of fibers was greater for samples from disturbed site stems. The anatomical structural dimensions were smaller for samples from the undisturbed site stems. These findings partially confirm the artisans’ belief and supports the conclusion that microclimatic conditions affect plant anatomical structure. Rev. Biol. Trop. 56 (2): 937-949. Desmoncus orthacanthos es una palmera trepadora neotropical que puede, potencialmente, utilizarse en usos similares a los del ratán. El género Desmoncus (subfamilia Arecoideae, subtribu Bactridinae) se distribuye en América desde Veracruz, Mexico, hasta Brasil y Bolivia. Esta especie posee características anatómicas que no han sido ampliamente estudiadas pero observaciones hechas por artesanos centroamericanos sugieren que los tallos de sitios no perturbados por actividades humanas presentan mayor resistencia al doblado y menos tallos fracturados en el manejo. Las muestras de tallos fueron recolectadas de individuos que crecen en un sitio conservado y uno perturbado por actividades humanas, a tres alturas de la longitud del tallo (basal, media y apical). Se recolectó una rama de cada uno de cinco individuos (n=5) en ambos sitios. Cada rama fue dividida en tres secciones: basal, desde el nivel del suelo hasta los 0.5 m; medio, desde 0.5 a 5.0 m; y apical, desde 5.0 a 10.0 m. Se midió la cantidad por unidad de área y las dimensiones o tamaño (i.e. diámetro radial y diámetro perpendicular) de paquetes vasculares, células de parénquima y fibras. La cantidad de paquetes vasculares fue mayor en los tallos del sitio conservado, la cantidad de células de parénquima fue diferente entre sitios y la cantidad de fibras fue mayor en los tallos del sitio perturbado por actividades humanas. Estas características muestran cierta relación con los resultados mecánicos en otro estudio de los autores, los cuales confirman parcialmente las observaciones de los artesanos, lo que puede estar estrechamente relacionado con las características microclimáticas de los sitios de crecimiento.

Arboreal palms have developed a variety of structural root modifications and systems to adapt to the harsh abiotic conditions of tropical rain forests. Stilt roots have been proposed to serve a number of functions including the facilitation of rapid vertical growth to the canopy and enhanced mechanical stability. To examine whether stilt roots provide these functions, we compared stilt root characteristics of the neotropical palm tree Socratea exorrhiza on sloped (>20º) and flat locations at two lowland neotropical sites. S. exorrhiza (n=80 trees) did not demonstrate differences in number of roots, vertical stilt root height, root cone circumference, root cone volume, or location of roots as related to slope. However, we found positive relationships between allocation to vertical growth and stilt root architecture including root cone circumference, number of roots, and root cone volume. Accordingly, stilt roots may allow S. exorrhiza to increase height and maintain mechanical stability without having to concurrently invest in increased stem diameter and underground root structure. This strategy likely increases the species ability to rapidly exploit light gaps as compared to non-stilt root palms and may also enhance survival as mature trees approach the theoretical limits of their mechanical stability. Comparamos características físicas de raíces aéreas de la palmera Socratea exorrhiza en sitios inclinados (pendiente>20º) y sitios planos, en dos lugares neotropicales. S. exorrhiza (n=80 árboles) no muestra diferencias en el número de raíces, la altura vertical de las raíces, la circunferencia y la masa del cono de las raíces, o la posición de las raíces en los sitios con pendiente. Encontramos relaciones positivas entre el crecimiento vertical y la arquitectura de las raíces aéreas, incluso entre el número de raíces, la circunferencia del cono de las raíces, y la masa del cono de las raíces. Es posible que las raíces aéreas permitan a S. exorrhiza crecer en altura y mantener la estabilidad mecánica sin involucrar el diámetro del tallo y la estructura de las raíces subterráneas. Probablemente, esta estrategia incrementa la capacidad de la especie para usar claros de luz rápidamente, en comparación con palmeras carentes de raíces aéreas; posiblemente también exista un incremento en su supervivencia cuando las adultas palmeras se acercan a sus límites de estabilidad mecánica.

ABSTRACT

Astrocaryum jauari Mart. (Arecaceae) is one of the commonest palm species occurring in nutritionally poor Amazonian black water floodplains. It is an emergent or subcanopy tree that grows on river banks and islands, with a wide distribution along the entire flooding gradient, tolerating flood durations between 30 and 340 days. The species is important for fish nutrition in the floodplains, and is also used for hearts of palm. In the present study, the auto-ecology of A. jauari was analysed over a period of two years in the Anavilhanas Archipelago, Rio Negro, Brazil, with a focus on phenology, fruit production, and seed dispersal. Fruit fall is annual and synchronized with high water levels, with a production of 1.6 ton of fruit ha(-1). The fruits are eaten by at least 16 species of fish which either gnaw the pulp, fragment the seed, or ingest the entire fruit, thus acting as dispersal agents. Besides ichthyocory, barochory (with subsequent vegetative propagation) is an important dispersal mode, enhancing the occurrence of large masses of individuals in the Anavilhanas islands and in the region of maximum palm heart extraction near Barcelos.


Astrocaryum jauari Mart. (Arecaceae) es una de las especies más comunes de palma en las llanuras de inundación por las llamadas “aguas negras”, aguas ricas en taninos que tienen pocos nutrientes para la fauna. Habita el subdosel que se desarrolla en riberas e islas, con una distribución amplia en toda la gradiente de inundación (resiste entre 30 y 340 días bajo el agua). La especie es importante para la nutrición de los peces y en la producción de palmito. La autoecología de A. jauari fue analizada por dos años en el Archipiélago Anavilhanas, río Negro, Brazil, con énfasis en fenología, producción de frutas, y dispersores de semillas. La caída de los frutos es anual y sincronizada con el aumento de los niveles de agua, con una producción de 1.6 ton de fruta ha-1. Las frutas son comidas por al menos de 16 especies de peces que roen la pulpa o fragmentos de semilla, o ingieren la fruta entera y actúan como agentes dispersores. Además de la ictiocoria, la barocoria y la subsecuente progragación asexual son básicos para la alta densidad de la especie.

Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi has often promoted increased growth of plants but very little work has been done in the tropics to evaluate the effects of inoculation on the establishment and development of seedlings in forests. Desmoncus orthacanthos Martius is a scandent palm present both in early and late succession, and consequently can be used in restoration processes. A test was conducted to determine the effect of AM on the establishment of Desmoncus orthacanthos in tropical forest in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Thirty inoculated and 30 non-inoculated seedlings were introduced in two sites of different successional age, a mature forest and an eight-year old abandoned cornfield (acahual).Survival and growth parameters were evaluated after 12 months. Leaf area and phosphorus, but not height, were greater in inoculated than non-inoculated plants in the forest but not in the acahual. However, mycorrhizae had a clear effect on plant survival in both sites, with a threefold increase in survival of inoculated compared with non-inoculated plants bassed on an odds ratio. The results suggest that inoculation will be important to increase the establishment of this commercially important palm.


La inoculación con hongos micorrizógenos arbusculares (AM)promueve un incremento en el crecimiento de las plantas, sin embargo poco trabajo se ha realizado en los trópicos para evaluar el efecto de la inoculación en el proceso de establecimiento de plántulas. Desmoncus orthacanthos Martius es una palmera trepadora que se distribuye tanto en etapas tempranas y tardías de la sucesión, por lo tanto puede ser empleada en procesos de restauración. Se realizó una prueba de establecimiento de D. orthacanthos en una selva tropical de la península de Yucatán, México. Treinta plántulas inoculadas y 30 no inoculadas se establecieron en dos sitios con diferentes etapas sucesionales: selva madura y un campo abandonado de maíz (acahual). Después de 12 meses el valor de área foliar y contenido de fósforo fue mayor en el tratamiento con micorrizas en la selva pero no en el acahual, sin embargo, el tratamiento con micorrizas mostró un claro efecto en la supervivencia de las palmeras en ambos sitios con un incremento tres veces mayor en la probabilidad de supervivencia de palmeras inoculadas comparadas con las no inoculadas de acuerdo al análisis de razón de disparidad (odds ratio). La inoculación podría ser importante para incrementar el establecimiento de esta palmera.
