ABSTRACT

RESUMEN Objetivos Conocer la infestación natural por triatominos y su infección por Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) en Acrocomia aculeata (A. aculeata) o palma corozo en el estado Anzoátegui, Venezuela. Materiales y métodos Se estudió la infestación triatomínica y su infección por T. cruzi en A. aculeata desafectadas en campañas fitosanitarias. La presencia del parásito se determinó por microscopia y PCR-kDNA, y se realizó su caracterización mediante marcadores moleculares. Resultados Se encontraron 14 palmeras con infestación triatomínica, el 48,8 % de los ejemplares correspondieron a Rhodnius prolixus y el 48,2 % a Triatoma maculata, con desarrollo ontogénico hacia el adulto. Las pruebas parasitológicas y moleculares, su morfología típica y la infección en el modelo murino revelaron la presencia de T. cruzi en 54,8 % en promedio, para ambas especies de triatominos, con circulación del genotipo TcI de T. cruzi. Conclusiónes Se reportó para el estado Anzoátegui en Venezuela, la infestación de palma corozo con Rhodnius prolixus y Triatoma maculata y la presencia de subpoblaciones TcI de T. cruzi, siendo esta palma el hábitat peridomiciliar del binomio triatominos-T. cruzi y posible bioindicador de riesgo de infección para poblaciones humanas circunvecinas.


ABSTRACT Introduction To know the natural infestation by triatominae and their infection by Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) in Acrocomia Aculeata (A. aculeata) or coyol palm in the state of Anzoátegui, Venezuela. Materials and Methods Triatominic infestation and its infection by T. cruzi was studied in non-affected A. aculeata in phytosanitary campaigns. The presence of the parasite was determined by microscopy and PCR-kDNA, and its characterization was made by means of molecular markers. Results Fourteen palm trees with triatominic infestation were found; 48.8% of the individuals corresponded to Rhodnius prolixus and 48.2% to Maculata Triatoma, with ontogenetic development towards adult. The parasitology and molecular tests, their typical morphology and the infection in the murine model revealed the presence of T. cruzi in an average of 54,8%, for both species of triatominae, with circulation of the TcI genotype of T. cruzi. Conclusions The infestation of coyol palm trees with Rhodnius prolixus and Maculata Triatoma was reported for the state of Anzoátegui in Venezuela, as well as the presence of TcI sub-populations of T. cruzi, being this palm tree the peridomicilar habitat of the triatominae-T. cruzi binomial and possible bioindicador of risk of infection for surrounding human populations.

ABSTRACT

Introduction Rhodnius neglectus is a triatomine that colonizes different palm species. In this study, we aimed to describe the presence of this triatomine bug in the royal palms (Roystonea oleracea) in a rural region of the State of Goiás. Methods Palm infestation was investigated by dissecting the palms or by using live-bait traps. Results Two palm trees were infested by R. neglectus negative for Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent for Chagas disease. In the study area, R. neglectus is frequently found in households. Conclusions The adaptation of this species to palm trees introduced in Brazil for landscaping purposes poses another challenge for controlling the vectors of Chagas disease. .

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to report on the colonization of palm trees by Rhodnius neglectus, its invasion in an urban area, in Araçatuba - São Paulo, and the control and surveillance measures that have been put in place. Domiciliary triatomine searches occurred in apartments upon the inhabitants' notification. The collected insects were identified and examined for natural infection and food sources with a precipitin test. To search the palm trees, tarps were used to cover the floor, and a “Munck” truck equipped with a tree-pruning device was utilized. Chemical control was performed with the utilization of a manual compression. In 2009, 81 specimens of Rhodnius neglectus were collected from the domiciles by the population. The precipitin test revealed a presence of human blood in 2.7% of the samples. Entomological studies were carried out in these domiciles and in those located within a radius of 200 meters. The search performed in the palm trees resulted in the capture of 882 specimens of triatomines, negative for tripanosomatids. Mechanical and chemical controls were carried out. New searches conducted in the palm trees in the same year resulted in the capture of six specimens. The mechanical and chemical controls of the palm trees, together with the population's work, proved to be effective, therefore preventing these insects' colonization of the city's domiciles.


O objetivo deste trabalho é relatar a colonização de palmeiras por Rhodnius neglectus, sua invasão em área urbana, na cidade de Araçatuba - São Paulo, o controle e as medidas de vigilância instituídas. As pesquisas de triatomíneos nos domicílios ocorreram nos apartamentos quando da notificação pelo morador. Os insetos coletados foram identificados, examinados quanto à infecção natural e teste de precipitina. Na pesquisa das palmeiras foram utilizados lonas para forração do chão e caminhão Munck equipado com moto poda. O controle químico foi realizado com a utilização de compressor manual. No ano de 2009, foram coletados pela população 81 exemplares de Rhodnius neglectus em domicílios. O teste de precipitina acusou presença de sangue humano em 2,7% das amostras. Pesquisas entomológicas foram realizadas nestas edificações e naquelas situadas em um raio de 200 metros onde ocorreram as invasões. A pesquisa realizada nas palmeiras resultou na captura de 882 exemplares de triatomíneos, negativos para tripanosomatídeos. Foi realizado controle mecânico e químico. Novas pesquisas realizadas nas palmeiras avaliadas no mesmo ano resultaram na coleta de seis exemplares. Os controles mecânicos e químicos das palmeiras aliado ao trabalho de participação popular mostraram-se factíveis impedindo a colonização destes insetos nos domicílios da cidade.

Colombia tiene un registro de 11 casos de Chagas agudo y 80 casos por contaminación oral con Trypanosoma cruzi. Este trabajo analiza los hallazgos entomológicos y parasitológicos del brote de Aguachica, Cesar, en 2010. Un grupo interdisciplinario de profesionales de la salud y de universidades regionales realizó las pruebas de laboratorio a los pacientes y el estudio del foco de transmisión. Se detectaron 11 casos agudos de enfermedad de Chagas en una sola familia con vivienda sin triatominos domiciliados y, Rhodnius pallescens, Pantrongylus geniculatus, Eratyrus cuspidatus y dos Didelphis marsupialis infectados con T. cruzi en palmas de Attalea butyracea y Elaeis oleifera del área urbana de Aguachica. Se analiza la participación del R. pallescens y el rol de las palmas en el ciclo silvestre de T. cruzi y para la transmisión oral de la enfermedad de Chagas. Incursiones esporádicas de R. pallescens, P. geniculatus y E. cuspidatus silvestres desde palmas cercanas al domicilio humano pueden provocar brotes cada vez más frecuentes de Chagas oral.


Colombia recorded 11 cases of acute Chagas disease and 80 cases of oral contamination with Trypanosoma cruzi. The current study analyzes the entomological and parasitological characteristics of the outbreak in Aguachica, Cesar Department, in 2010. An interdisciplinary group of health professionals and regional university personnel conducted the laboratory tests in the patients and the investigation of the transmission focus. Eleven cases of acute Chagas diseases were detected in a single family in a dwelling with domiciliated triatomines and Rhodnius pallescens, Pantrongylus geniculatus, Eratyrus cuspidatus, and two Didelphis marsupialis opossums infected with T. cruzi in Attalea butyracea and Elaeis oleifera palm trees in the urban area of Aguachica. The study analyzes the role of R. pallescens and palm trees in the wild cycle of T. cruzi and in oral transmission of Chagas disease. Sporadic incursions by wild R. pallescens, P. geniculatus, and E. cuspidatus from the nearby palm trees into human dwellings may cause increasingly frequent outbreaks of oral Chagas disease.


A Colômbia tem registro de 11 surtos da doença de Chagas e 80 casos agudos por contaminação oral com Trypanosoma cruzi. Esta pesquisa analisa os achados entomológicos e parasitológicos do surto de Aguachica, Cesar, em 2010. Um grupo interdisciplinar de profissionais da saúde e de universidades regionais efetuou os testes laboratoriais nos pacientes e o estudo de foco de transmissão. Encontraram 11 casos agudos da doença de Chagas em uma única família com domicilio sem triatomíneos e Rhodnius pallescens, Pantrongylus geniculatus, Eratyrus cuspidatus e dois Didelphis marsupialis infectados com T. cruzi em palmeiras de Attalea butyracea e Elaeis oleifera da área urbana de Aguachica. Analisa-se a participação de R. pallescens e a função das palmeiras em o ciclo silvestre de T. cruzi e para a transmissão oral da doença de Chagas. Incursões esporádicas de R. pallescens, P. geniculatus e E. cuspidatus silvestres das palmeiras próximas ao domicilio humano podem provocar surtos cada vez mais frequentes de Chagas oral.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed the occurrence and the contamination of triatomines by trypanosomatids in Orbignya speciosa (babassu) specimens in the State of Rondônia, Brazil, in two different environments (pasture and woods). METHODS: Capture of triatomines on babassus and microscopic search for trypanosomatids in their digestive tube were carried out. RESULTS: Four hundred ninety-four (494) specimens were captured (Rhodnius prolixus and R.robustus), of which 35.6% of the triatomines were positive for trypanosomatids. CONCLUSIONS: The high index of natural infection along with the abundance of triatomines points out to the necessity to create an epidemiological surveillance system to monitor vector-borne transmission and deepen the studies on the ecology of such vectors in the Amazon.


INTRODUÇÃO: O estudo analisou a ocorrência e o índice de contaminação por tripanosomatídeos de triatomíneos em Orbynia speciosa no Estado de Rondônia, Brasil, em 2 ambientes (pastagem e floresta). MÉTODOS: Captura em palmeiras e esfregaços do conteúdo do tubo digestivo dos triatomíneos analisados por microscopia óptica. RESULTADOS: Capturaram-se 494 espécimes (Rhodnius prolixus e R. robustus), sendo que 35,6% dos triatomíneos estavam positivos para tripanosomatídeos. CONCLUSÕES: O elevado índice de infecção natural, aliados à abundância de triatomíneos, mostram a necessidade de se criar um sistema de vigilância epidemiológica para monitorar a transmissão vetorial e aprofundar estudos sobre a ecologia destes vetores na Amazônia.

ABSTRACT

The oil palm Elaeis guineensis is usually attacked by pests, particularly, defoliating caterpillars. Between 2004 and 2006 a stinkbug predator (Asopinae) was registered preying on caterpillars of Brassolis sophorae L., Opsiphanes invirae Hübner (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) and Sibine spp. (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae), reducing their populations in commercial oil palm plantations in the State of Pará, Brazil. Specimens of the natural enemy were collected, mounted, and identified as Alcaeorrhynchus grandis (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), corresponding to the first report of the occurrence of this stinkbug attacking defoliating caterpillars of oil palm in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Ants can nest in a wide variety of substracts. This paper shows Syagrus romanzoffiana seed utilization by ants in an Atlantic secondary forest. We report 29 seeds occupied by small-bodied ants, with 27 of them showing at least two ant development stages. Although a large number of seeds were sampled, a low level of ant occupation was observed.


As formigas podem nidificar em uma ampla variedade de substratos. Este estudo relata o uso das sementes de Syagrus romanzoffiana em floresta atlântica secundária, como local para nidificação de formigas. Foram encontradas 29 sementes ocupadas por formigas de pequeno porte, sendo que 27 delas apresentaram pelo menos dois estágios de desenvolvimento de formigas. A taxa de ocupação foi baixa apesar de as sementes serem abundantes.

ABSTRACT

En el presente trabajo se presentan descripciones de la morfología externa del huevo, instares larvales y pupa de Calyptocephala gerstaeckeri Boheman, insecto plaga de la palma aceitera (Elaeis guineensis J.) y de la palma camedor (Chamaedorea elegans Mart.) en el estado de Tabasco, México. Además se aportan algunos datos acerca de la bionomía de esta especie, la cual fue criada en laboratorio sobre plantas jóvenes de palma aceitera.


Characters of the external morphology of egg, larval instars and pupae of Calyptocephala gerstaeckeri Boheman, insect pest of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis J.) and camedor palm (Chamaedorea elegans Mart.) in the State of Tabasco, Mexico, are described and illustrated. Some bionomics data are also presented. The specie was reared in the laboratory on young oil palm plants.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work is to present aspects related to the ecology of Rhodnius nasutus Stål, 1859 in palms from Chapada do Araripe in Ceará, Brazil. The following five species of palms were investigated: babaçu (Attalea speciosa), buriti (Mauritia flexuosa), carnaúba (Copernicia prunifera), catolé (Syagrus oleracea) and macaúba-barriguda (Acrocomia intumescens). Fifth palms were dissected (10 specimens for each species). The overall infestation index was 86 percent, with a total of 521 triatomines collected. The Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, 1909 Index was 16.8 percent and two insects presented mixed infection with Trypanosoma rangeli Tejera, 1920. A precipitin test showed that R. nasutus from palms of Chapada do Araripe are associated with opossum and bird although other possible bloodmeals were observed. Our results showing a high index of infestation of the palms as well as T. cruzi infection, the association of R. nasutus with the most diverse species of palms and proximity of these palms to houses demonstrate the importance of this area for sylvatic T. cruzi transmission and suggest the need for epidemiological surveillance in the region of the Chapada do Araripe.

ABSTRACT

Seis palmeiras de Attalea phalerata foram amostradas durante a fase aquática (cheia) no Pantanal de Mato Grosso (fevereiro/2001), utilizando-se a metodologia de nebulização de copas "canopy fogging". Este estudo objetivou avaliar a composição, distribuição espacial, guildas comportamentais, biomassa e sazonalidade da comunidade de Araneae em copas dessa palmeira que forma adensamentos monodominantes, típicos nessa região. Um total de 1326 aranhas foram coletadas em 99 m² de área amostral (13,4 + 8,2 indivíduos/m²), representando 20 famílias, sendo Salticidae e Araneidae as mais abundantes. A biomassa total de 704 aranhas em três palmeiras correspondeu a 0.6172 mg de peso seco (0,0123+ 0,04 mg/m²). Dez guildas comportamentais demonstraram a coexistência de diferentes espécies em um mesmo habitat. Representantes de Salticidae, Oonopidae e Ctenidae dominaram entre as caçadoras, e Araneidae e Dictynidae, dentre as tecelãs. A análise de distribuição espacial demonstrou que a maior abundância de aranhas ocorreu na região central da copa, provavelmente devido à quantidade de recursos disponíveis nesse local. A comparação desses resultados com aqueles obtidos durante o período de seca, demonstra diferenças sazonais influenciadas pelo pulso de inundação, principalmente com relação à composição das famílias amostradas entre os períodos de seca e cheia.
