ABSTRACT

Abstract This study assessed mad honey use in alternative treatments. The universe of this descriptive study was patients admitted to the pulmonary disease clinic located in the Ordu province of the Black Sea region between 15 December 2014 and 15 February 2015. We did not use a sampling method and patients who agreed to participate were included in the study (n=353). In order to collect the data, we used a questionnaire prepared by the researchers. In this study, 77% of the participants stated that mad honey was beneficial to health, 44.5% used mad honey, and 53.5% consumed it daily. Furthermore, 28.7% used mad honey for asthma, 6.4% for cough, 12.1% for gastrointestinal diseases, and 3.2% for hypertension. There was a significant relationship between the gender, family structure, age, and chronic disease status of participants and the status of consuming mad honey (p<0.05). In this study, participants used mad honey for asthma, gastrointestinal diseases, hypertension, and cough. Health professionals should provide training and counseling on the health effects and risks of mad honey to improve public health.

ABSTRACT

Asthma is a chronic disease of the lower airways characterized by inflammation and bronchospasm limiting airflow. It is a costly disease and high prevalence and morbidity and mortality. Antioxidants are compounds that protect biological systems against the effects of oxidative reactions perpetrators of the inflammatory process. Among them we mention selenium, carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamins C and E. Therefore, low intake of dietary sources of dietary antioxidants and the clinical response in pulmonary dysfunction, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of antioxidant nutrients in nutritional therapy of asthma. In this review, most studies have shown that asthmatics have low levels of antioxidants in the blood and lung fluids and indicated some inverse relationship between intake of foods rich in antioxidants and asthma, suggesting that the need to consume the food sources of antioxidants is greater in asthma, which does not necessarily need to be supplemented. A healthy, balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables is beneficial in the treatment of disease.

ABSTRACT

Asthma is one of the common psychosomatic illness influenced by many factors. Bronchodilators give temporary relief and have side effects. The present study is aimed at finding the efficacy of a non-pharmacological approach of naturopathy and Yoga in bronchial asthma. A total no of 37 patients (19 men, 18 women) with mean age 35.06 yrs (men), 40.74 yrs (women) admitted to INYS, Bangalore, for the period of 21 days. The treatment included 1. Diet therapy 2. Nature cure treatment and 3. Yoga therapy. The various parameters including lung function test were measured on admission and once a week. Results showed the significant improvement in PEFR, VC, FVC, FEV1, FEV/FEC %, MVV, ESR and absolute eosinophil count. The patients reported a feeling of well being, freshness and comfortable breathing. Naturopathy and yoga helps in inducing positive health, alleviating the symptoms of disease by acting at physical and mental levels.

ABSTRACT

Although hypersensitivity to foods is often linked to exacerbations of symptoms of respiratory allergy, no such information is available regarding the foods traditionally considered to play a probable etiological role in respiratory allergy in India, which are in fact quite different from the ones implicated in the West. The present study was undertaken to investigate whether the practice of withholding certain common foods by parents and practitioners of indigenous systems of medicine (i.e. Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine) in children suffering from respiratory allergy had any scientific basis or explanation as judged by modern techniques of investigation. Skin prick tests were performed on 64 children with symptoms pertaining to respiratory allergy (32 each in study and control group) using crude antigenic food extracts. Oral food challenges were administered to children to confirm or rule out allergenicity of food (s) incriminated on the basis of the clinical history and/or a positive skin test. Parental history of food restriction alone, in absence of positive skin prick test was of little value in predicting a positive response to the food challenges (1 challenge positive out of 77 based on food restriction: 1.29%). Only 27.02% and 18.75% of positive skin tests were found to be clinically significant in study and control groups respectively. Traditionally, food beliefs were upheld in only 12.5% children for immediate onset clinical reactions (with 5.31% of the foods restricted in their diet) and 9.37% children for delayed onset clinical reactions (with 3.19% of the foods restricted in their diet). The present study shows that even though food restriction is a common practice in patients with respiratory allergy in India, objective documentation of Type I reactions due to these foods cannot be obtained in a majority of such children.

ABSTRACT

The effect of honey on the bronchoconstriction induced by histamine [0.5%] and acetylcholine [4%] aerosols in normal conscious guinea pigs, as well as its antianaphylactic effect on sensitized guinea pigs exposed to the antigen [5% ovalbumin aerosol] have been evaluated. Pretreatment with honey [3 g/kg] prolonged the preconvulsive time of normal conscious guinea pigs exposed to histamine, acetylcholine aerosols, or sensitized guinea pigs exposed to the antigen [5% ovalbumin] aerosol. The effect in the latter one is better than the first two types. This denoted that honey can be used for treatment of bronchial asthma due to its antagonistic effect to hypersensitivity reactions
