ABSTRACT

AbstractThe Caribbean King Crab, Damithrax spinosissimus is a fishery resource, but few biological studies are available. Its patchy distribution, and the high environmental heterogeneity due to the oceanographic, landscape, and ecological characteristics of the Caribbean Sea, can favor the phenotypic variability according to the geographic origin. For this reason, the objective of our study was to determine morphometic variability in the carapace of the crabs from three Southwestern Caribbean islands: Providence, Rosario and San Bernardo. The former has an oceanic influence, whereas the two latter islands, which are closer to the mainland, have more influence of the coastal dynamic. A total of 276 individuals from the three islands were captured and photographed: 103 females and 173 males; their variation was analyzed from 12 anatomical landmarks marked on one half of the carapace. The differences in the carapace size were calculated using a Fisher’s pairwise comparison; the allometric effect was calculated by Multivariate Regression Analysis; and the Allometric model via Multivariate Analysis of Covariance. The average shape was calculated from the relative wraps RW obtained through PCA analysis; and the Euclidian distances between the shape averages, were used to construct a tree using the Neighbour-Joining algorithm over 10 000 permutations. The results showed significant differences in the size and shape of the carapace between sexes and among the three islands. The differences in the shape of the crabs from Providencia were significantly greater than those found between the crabs of Rosario and San Bernardo. These results can be explained inclusively due to the genetic differences and phenotypic plasticity, due to environmental heterogeneity of the sector. This study, the first of its kind, is a contribution to the knowledge of the species. We concluded that different management strategies should be differently adopted in each of the three studied islands. Rev. Biol. Trop. 64 (2): 667-681. Epub 2016 June 01.

ABSTRACT

We investigated factors associated with adequacy of prenatal and childbirth care for women in São Tomé and Príncipe. Data were analyzed from the Demographic and Health Survey on a sample of 1,326 newborn infants whose mothers were 15-49 years of age. The survey took place from September 2008 to March 2009. We used multilevel and multinomial logistic regression to analyze the association between demographic and socioeconomic factors and the target outcomes. Prenatal care was adequate in 26% of the sample, and 7% of deliveries were performed by physicians and 76% by nurses or nurse assistants. Statistically significant factors for prenatal care were birth order, maternal schooling, and index of economic well-being. The most important variables for adequate delivery were: birth order, maternal schooling, index of economic well-being, and place of residence. The study showed that socioeconomic factors have the greatest influence on adequate prenatal care and delivery. Future health policies should target social inequalities in São Tomé and Príncipe.

ABSTRACT

The isolation of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants, based on traditional use or ethnomedical data, is a highly promising potential approach for identifying new and effective antimalarial drug candidates. The purpose of this review was to create a compilation of the phytochemical studies on medicinal plants used to treat malaria in traditional medicine from the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPSC): Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe. In addition, this review aimed to show that there are several medicinal plants popularly used in these countries for which few scientific studies are available. The primary approach compared the antimalarial activity of native species used in each country with its extracts, fractions and isolated substances. In this context, data shown here could be a tool to help researchers from these regions establish a scientific and technical network on the subject for the CPSC where malaria is a public health problem.

ABSTRACT

The article reviews academic literature in the social sciences and health on the problems and challenges of STD/AIDS prevention in Portuguese-speaking African countries. Based on a bibliographic survey of the SciELO, PubMed, and Sociological Abstracts databases between 1997 and 2007, the research under review was organized into two groups, according to content. The first group of studies sought to understand STD/AIDS vulnerability among social groups by examining local cultural and socioeconomic factors as related to gender dynamics, sexuality, color/race, religion and health care. The second group encompassed critical assessments of shortcomings in the STD/AIDS educational messages delivered by governments and international agencies. Attention is called to the way in which the presence of traditional medicine systems and the occurrence of civil wars in the post-colonial period impact the STD/AIDS epidemic in the African countries under study.
