ABSTRACT

This study aimed to understand the experience of illness of adult women (over 30 years) diagnosed with eating disorders (ED). This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as theoretical and methodological framework. A sample of six women aged 34-64 years, assisted in a specialized service, were recruited to complete a phenomenological in-depth open interview. The data were remotely collected. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analyzed following the IPA. Two thematic categories were identified: "Living before the illness" and "Finding about the illness." It was found that the symptoms started before adulthood and that there was difficulty establishing the diagnosis. Living with the symptoms became more complicated due to particularities of symptom management in adulthood and age is perceived as a factor that impacts recovery and makes it even more difficult. The participants reported hopelessness about the future, although most recognized improvements in the clinical condition over time and valued the trusting relationship they established with the multiprofessional team.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Concerning the specificities of a longitudinal study, the trajectories of a subject's mean responses not always present a linear behavior, which calls for tools that take into account the non-linearity of individual trajectories and that describe them towards associating possible random effects with each individual. Generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) have come to solve this problem, since, in this class of models, it is possible to assign specific random effects to individuals, in addition to rewriting the linear term by summing unknown smooth functions, not parametrically specified, then using the P-splines smoothing technique. Thus, this article aims to introduce this methodology applied to a dataset referring to an experiment involving 57 Swiss mice infected by Trypanosoma cruzi, which had their weights monitored for 12 weeks. The analyses showed significant differences in the weight trajectory of the individuals by treatment group; besides, the assumptions required to validate the model were met. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that this methodology is satisfactory in modeling data of longitudinal sort, because, with this approach, in addition to the possibility of including fixed and random effects, these models allow adding complex correlation structures to residuals.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate body weight changes in nursing workers on the night shift. Methodology: this quantitative, exploratory, descriptive study, conducted at a large federal hospital in Rio de Janeiro, after approval of the institution's research ethics committee, considered socio-demographic variables, influence of the night work on the organism, and body mass index. Results: average weight gain among the 89 nursing workers was approximately 20kg since admission to night work, and nurses reported greater influence of lack of sleep on the body, and greater exhaustion as compared with data on the other categories. Conclusion: considering the hormonal disorders and social impacts of night work, it is essential to implement changes towards a culture of prevention, through either institutional programs or interventionist research able to develop measures that lead to self-recognition and promotion of nursing workers' physical, mental and social wellbeing.

ABSTRACT

Antenatal care is one of the pillars of SAFE Motherhood Initiative aimed at preventing adverse pregnancy outcome. Early antenatal booking is recommended for this benefit. Aim: The objective of this study was to determine the antenatal booking pattern of pregnant women and its determinants. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional survey of pregnant women attending the antenatal booking clinic at Federal Medical Centre Abakaliki Ebonyi State between April 6; 2011 to August 5; 2011 was undertaken. Epi info 2008 version was used for analysis. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 27.46 (5.81) years and the mean gestational age at booking was 24.33 (5.52) weeks. A total of 83.1 (286/344) of the pregnant women booked after the first trimester while the remaining 16.9 (56/344) booked early. Socio-biological variables and past obstetrics history did not contribute significantly to the gestational age at booking while sickness in index pregnancy; personal wishes; and financial constraint were statistically significant reasons given for seeking antenatal care. Majority of the pregnant women 37.2 (128/344) suggested that the second trimester was the ideal gestational age for booking while 18.3 (63/344) did not know the ideal gestational age for booking. Most pregnant women 81.1 ( 279/344) knew the benefits of early antenatal care even though they booked late 83.1 (286/344). Conclusion: Most pregnant women access antenatal care late at Abakaliki because of misconception and poverty. Health education and subsidization of cost of medical services will help in reversing the trend of late antenatal booking
