ABSTRACT

Objective. The objective of this research was to evaluate the relationship between transformational leadership styles and the acceptance of organizational change in workers of two companies in Bogotá, belonging to the terciary economic sector. Method: This was non-experimental research with a correlational design. The instrument for measuring organizational change (IMC) was applied to 9 middle management (IMC) bosses or leaders, and the multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) to 62 other workers. Results. The results showed significant and positive relationships between effectiveness and communication at 0.685. Conclusion. It was concluded that communication and attitude to change are important elements in a process or organizational change. In future research the sample could be increased, and the questionnaire could be adapted to transformational leadership with the Colombian population.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effect of the periosteum-wrapped tendon on tendon-to-bone healing using a rabbit model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty New Zealand white rabbits were used. The animals were divided into two groups, a group with periosteum-wrapped tendon and a control group without a periosteal wrap. Both legs were operated upon in the same manner. The long digital extensor tendon was harvested and transplanted into the proximal tibial tunnel. One limb was transplanted with the tendon wrapped with periosteum facing the cambium layer to the tendon, while the other was without periosteum. The healed tendon-bone attachment was evaluated at 3-weeks and 6-weeks histologically and by biomechanical testing. RESULTS: At 3 and 6 weeks, histologic examination demonstrated more extensive bone formation around the tendon with closer apposition of new bone to the tendon in the limb with the periosteum-wrapped tendon graft than in the control limb. Biomechanical testing demonstrated the higher pullout strength of tendon in the limb with the periosteum-wrapped tendon graft at 3 and 6 weeks with statistically significant differences between the limb with the periosteum-wrapped tendon graft and the control limb at 3 and 6 weeks. CONCLUSION: Histological and biomechanical data suggest superior healing in the periosteum-wrapped group. This study demonstrates that periosteum can enhance the healing process when a tendon graft is transplanted into a bone tunnel.

ABSTRACT

Mesenchymal cystic hamartoma of the lung is quite rare lesion which has an unknown prevalence, firstly described in 1986. It is characterized by multiple nodules and variable sized cysts in both lung field. The nodules of immature mesenchymal cells gradually enlarge and become cysts which are lined with normal or metaplastic respiratory epithelium and have the cambium layer of primitive mesenchymal cells. Main symptoms are hemoptysis, recurrent pneumothorax, and hemothorax. It is known to benign tumor, but has possibility of malignant degeneration. In gross findings in opertive field, multiple and variable-sized cystic lesions and nodules were observed. The cysts were lined with normal respiratory epithelium and had the cambium layer of primitive mesenchymal cell. Gross and microscopic findings were compatible with mesenchymal cystic hamartoma. We report a case of mesenchymal cystic hamartoma in a 27-year-old woman who had recurrent pneumothorax and hemoptysis.

ABSTRACT

The chondrogenic potential of free autogenous periosteal grafts for osteochondral defects was investigated at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yonsei University, Wonju College of Medicine. Five millimeter diameter of circular full-thickness defects were made in patellar groove of both femur in 64 adolescent rabbits and the rectangular periostei, prepared from the proximal tibiae, were placed over the defects of patellar groove and sutured(cambium layer, facing joint surface) and the rabbits were allowed to move actively. A serial gross and histologic examinations of neochondrogenesis were done during 8 weeks. The results were as follows. l. At 2 weeks after operation, neochondrogenesis was hardly seen either in the graft group or in the control group. The defects were partially filled with some fibrous tissue. 2. After 6 weeks of operation, all defects in the graft group(postop 6 weeks and 8 weeks) were filled with hyaline cartilage cells but only 38% (postop 6 weeks) and 44% (postop 8 weeks) of the control group were filled with hyaline cartilage cells. 3. The cartilages, formed at 6 and 8 weeks, were more mature and better than those formed at 4 weeks. 4. The newly formed hyaline cartilage of the graft group filled the defect earlier and were better than those of the control group. 5. The chondrocytes in the newly formed tissue were originated from the cambium layer of periosteal grafts. 6. Free autogenous periosteal grafts can repair a full-thickness defect in a joint surface by producing tissue that resembles articular cartilage grossly and histologically.

ABSTRACT

The courses of the progression in the fibrous dysplasia are characterized by asymptomatic progression or spontaneous regression in some cases after the growth has ceased and the aims of treatment for a fibrous dysplasia are prevention of the pathologic fractures and correction of the deformities. The osteogenic potentiality of the cambium layer in the periosteum and the beneficial effect on the osteogenesis of the impregnating bone graft with autologous red marrow are well documented. We experienced an extensive fibrous dysplasia with cortical thinning and pathologic fracture and it was managed with subperiosteal combined xenograft of Kiel bone with autologous red marrow for the induction of cortical thickening and prevention of the pathologic fractures because of the inoperability of curettage due to extensive lesion over the entire femur, limitations in obtaining large amount of autogenous cancellous bone for the graft and lack of the facilities of the bone bank. This subperiosteal composite xenograft with autologous red marrow for a fibrous dysplasia gave an excellent result of a remarkable cortical thickening and we think this can be a type of management for a entensive fibrous dysplasia. So we are reporting this case with bibliographic reviews.
