ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Lampião, the most infamous Brazilian brigand leader, was killed and decapitated during an ambush in 1938. The Alagoas police coroner, Dr. José Lages Filho, performed an autopsy of his head. Strongly biased toward the anthropologic ideas of the famous Italian psychiatrist and criminalist Cesare Lombroso, the examination found only a few of the so-called criminal inborn traits. The Lombrosian doctrine and a number of related theories strongly influenced medical and political reasoning in the first half of the 20th century. Modern genetic and neuroscientific studies are still looking for the potential biological roots of misbehavior and criminality.

ABSTRACT

Apocrine hidrocystoma, also called apocrine cystadenoma, is a benign cystic tumor-like lesion that arises from the proliferation of apocrine glands. Clinically, it usually occurs singly as a unilocular or multilocular, dome-shaped translucent cyst. Histologically, it appears as unilocular or multilocular cysts composed of an inner layer of single or double layer of secretory columnar epithelium with decapitation secretion lying above an outer myoepithelial cell layer. Apocrine hidrocystomas mostly occur within the head and neck region and involvement of genitalia is extremely rare. This paper emphasizes the importance of considering the differential diagnosis of a genital cystic lesion. Herein, we report a case of apocrine hidrocystoma occurring in the penis and compare the clinicopathological characteristics of apocrine hidrocystoma in genitalia with the previous cases.

ABSTRACT

The authors report two cases of complete decapitation due to hanging. The decapitated body of a 49-year-old man weighing 53 kg was found next to a motel, and the head was 1.2 m away from the body. A rope (length, 3.5 m; diameter, 1.0 cm; nylon rope with a running noose), from the rescue and descent device of the room, was on an exterior wall of the motel. Another decapitated body of a 50-year-old man weighing 74 kg was found floating on the river. The head was found the next day. A rope (length, 7.2 m; diameter, 1.0 cm; nylon rope with a running noose) was tied to a bridge located on the upper side of the river. In both cases, the neck had a sharply demarcated circumferential laceration, similar to that noted in cases of sharp force injury. However, the laceration was formed by Langer's lines, and internal examination revealed findings of overstretching injury and blunt force injury. These cases were determined to be those of complete decapitation due to hanging.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Currently, natural products have been shown to exhibit interesting biological and pharmacological activities and are used as chemotherapeutic agents. The purpose of this study, conducted on Wistar rats, was to evaluate the beneficial effects of Artemisia arborescens oil on oestroprogestative treatment induced damage on liver. MATERIALS/METHODS: A total of 36 Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups; a control group (n = 9), a group of rats who received oestroprogestative treatment by intraperitoneal injection (n = 9), a group pre-treated with Artemisia arborescens then injected with oestroprogestative treatment (n = 9), and a group pre-treated with Artemisia arborescens (n = 9). To minimize the handling stress, animals from each group were sacrificed rapidly by decapitation. Blood serum was obtained by centrifugation and the livers were removed, cleaned of fat, and stored at -80degrees C until use. RESULTS: In the current study, oestroprogestative poisoning resulted in oxidative stress, which was demonstrated by 1) a significant increase of lipid peroxidation level in hepatic tissue 2) increased levels of serum transaminases (aspartate amino transferase and serum alanine amino transferase), alkaline phosphatase, glycemia and triglycerides and a decrease in the level of cholesterol 3) alteration of hepatic architecture. Pre-administration of Artemisia arborescens oil was found to alleviate oestroprogestative treatment induced damage by lowering lipid peroxidation level and by increasing activity of catalase, superoxide-dismutase, and glutathione-peroxidase in liver and by reducing disruption of biochemical parameters. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the results obtained in this study confirmed that Artemisia essential oil protects against oestroprogestative administration induced hepatotoxicity by restoration of liver activities.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this report was to describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics of two rare cases of necrotizing stomatitis, and the outcomes of a non-invasive treatment protocol applied in both cases. METHODS: We report two cases of necrotizing stomatitis in a rare location in the hard palate of a 40-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man. Neither had a relevant medical history and both presented with highly painful ulceration in the palate and gingival margin that was accompanied by suppuration and necrosis. 3% hydrogen peroxide was applied to the lesions using sterile swabs, and antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment was prescribed to both patients in addition to two daily oral rinses of 0.2% chlorhexidine. RESULTS: In both cases, radiological examination ruled out bone involvement, and exfoliative cytology revealed a large inflammatory component and the presence of forms compatible with fusobacteria and spirochetes. There was a rapid response to treatment and a major improvement was observed after 48 hours, with almost complete resolution of the ulcerated lesions and detachment of necrotic areas with partial decapitation of gingival papillae. CONCLUSIONS: Necrotizing periodontal lesions can hinder periodontal probing and the mechanical removal of plaque in some cases due to the extreme pain suffered by the patients. We present a non-invasive treatment approach that can manage these situations effectively.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Soy isoflavones are structurally similar to estrogen and bind to estrogen receptors, suggesting that they exhibit estrogenic activities; therefore, they are referred to as phytoestrogens. Fermentation may affect the bioavailability of isoflavones altering soy isoflavone glycosides in the form of aglycones. Thus, this study investigated the effects of fermented soybeans by Rhizopus oligosporus on bone metabolism in both young rats as a pilot test and in ovariectomized (ovx) old rats as a model of menopause. MATERIALS/METHODS: In the pilot test, a total of 24 seven-week-old female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were fed one of three diets for a period of four weeks: casein, unfermented soybean product, or fermented soybean product by R. oligosporus. In the ovx rat model, 20-week-old SD rats weighing 260-290 g underwent either sham-operation (n = 10) or bilateral ovariectomy (n = 30) and were then fed the AIN-93M diet for one week. Thereafter, rats were fed sham-casein, ovx-casein, ovx-soybean, or ovx-fermented soybean diet for five weeks. After decapitation, femoral bones were isolated and preserved in 9% formalin for assessment of bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone-breaking strength (BBS). RESULTS: Ovx rats showed significantly increased weight gain and decreased uterine wet weight. Of particular interest, ovx rats fed fermented soybeans showed increased uterine wet weights compared to control rats. Fermented soybean diet caused a significant increase in plasma 17-beta estradiol concentrations in young rats, and 17-beta estradiol levels were enhanced in ovx rats to match those of sham-operated ones. Significantly lower femoral BMD and BMC were observed in ovx rats compared to sham-operated controls, whereas bone areas did not differ statistically among the groups. In addition, BBS tended to be increased in ovx rats fed soybeans and fermented soybeans. CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation of fermented soybeans could have preventive and therapeutic effects against osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chondroid syringoma is a rare benign tumor composed of epithelial and stromal elements. Studies of chondroid syringoma are lacking in Korea and controversy still exists regarding the stromal cell origins. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of chondroid syringoma in Korea. METHODS: We included 23 patients who were diagnosed with chondroid syringoma. RESULTS: There was a predilection for males (M : F=2.3 : 1), and the mean patient age was 50.4+/-15.4 years (range 22~78 years), peaking in the forties. Of the 23 cases, 22 (95.7%) had it on the head and neck. There were 21 apocrine type cases and 2 eccrine type cases. Apocrine type cases showed decapitation secretion as well as follicular and sebaceous differentiations. Myxohyaline matrix was present in all cases, and in some cases, chondroid, lipomatous, and osseous metaplasias were also observed. In apocrine type cases, inner cell layers displaying tubuloglandular structures expressed cytokeratin, carcino-embryonic antigen, and epithelial membrane antigen, while outer cell layers expressed vimentin, S-100 protein, neuron-specific enolase, and smooth muscle actin. Stromal cell immunophenotypes were similar to those of the outer layer. CONCLUSION: Chondroid syringoma was most commonly observed on the head and neck in middle-aged males. The apocrine type was far more common than the eccrine type and showed various differentiating characteristics. The matrix may contain myxohyaline stroma with alterations, including chondroid, lipomatous, and osseous metaplasias. Our immunohistochemical study suggests that myoepithelial cells play an important role in the histogenesis of chondroid syringoma and matrix production.

ABSTRACT

Erosive adenomatosis of the nipple is a rare, benign neoplasm, currently thought to originate from the terminal lactiferous ducts and subareolar breast tissue. Clinically, erosive adenomatosis of the nipple is often indistinguishable from that of mammary Paget's disease, and it could be misdiagnosed as intraductal carcinoma as it has a similar histological finding. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman who had a unilateral erythematous induration of the nipple that contained a palpable, firm nodule. It had first been noticed 2 years earlier. The surface was occasionally crusted, and there was a bloody discharge. Histopathological examination showed irregular, dilated tubular structures, which were lined by a peripheral layer of cuboidal cells and a luminal layer of the columnar cells that demonstrated decapitation secretion at their luminal border.

ABSTRACT

Apocrine carcinoma arising from the apocrine sweat glands is a rare cutaneous malignant tumor which occurs predominantly in the axilla of elderly individuals. The typical histologic features of apocrine carcinoma is within a well developed glandular lumina with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and evidence of decapitation secretion. In rare instances, predominant signet ring cell features in apocrine carcinoma has been reported. We experienced a case that occured in the right axilla of a 59-year-old. Histopathologic examination showed a solid tumor that extended from the upper dermis into the subcutis, with a delicate infiltrate of epithelial cells. The cells had granular amphophilic cytoplasm, predominantly showed distinct signet ring cell morphology, and were strongly positive for epithelial mucin. Both lysozyme and gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 were identified in the tumor cells. We diagnosed this to be a case of primary signet ring cell apocrine carcinoma of the axilla after several immunohistochemical and clinical evaluations.

ABSTRACT

Hidradenoma papilliferum is a rare benign neoplasm that usually occurs in the female anogenital area. We present a 43-year-old female with a non-anogenital (ectopic) hidradenoma papilliferum on her nose. The patient had had a skin-colored subcutaneous nodule on her nose for 7 years. The histopathological findings showed variously shaped cystic spaces in the tumor. And the lumina were surrounded by a single or double layer of cell which showed decapitation secretion. In the English dermatological literature, only one case of ectopic hidradenoma papilliferum arising in nasal skin has been reported. Hence we suggest hidradenoma papilliferum occurring on the nasal skin is a peculiar and interesting event.

ABSTRACT

We report a rare case of complete decapitation in suicidal hanging from a bridge railing. A 71-year-old man weighing 75 kg jumped from the bridge of 6 m in height from the ground using a 4.5 m and 0.9 cm thick nylon rope with a running noose. The lower end of the rope was hanged 2.5 m from the ground. The decapitated body was found in the ground with blood pool. The head was 1 m apart from the body. The neck had a sharply demarcated circumferential band-like ligature mark with twisted diagonal lacerated margins. He had a history of depression and left a suicidal note. From the police investigation and death scene investigation, the case was determined as a suicidal hanging although the autopsy was not done. We reviewed literatures of decapitation cases in hanging deaths and compared the calculated physical forces applied to the ligature.

ABSTRACT

The period from June 1793 to July 1794 in France was known as the ¨Reign of Terror¨ or simply ¨the Terror¨. The upheaval following the overthrow of the monarchy, fear of invasion by foreign monarchist powers and the fear of counterrevolution from pro-monarchy parties within France all combined to throw the nation into chaos and the government into frenzied paranoia. Most of the democratic reforms of the revolution were suspended and wholesale executions by guillotine, the instrument introduced by Dr. Joseph Guillotine to provide a swift a death. The Revolutionary Tribunal sentenced between 15 000 and 40 000 of nobles, commoners, intellectuals, politicians and prostitutes on little or no grounds. Suspicion of ¨crimes against liberty¨ was enough to earn one an appointment with ¨Madame Guillotine¨. Some felt the guillotine, far from being quick and painless, was an instrument of the most profound and horrible torture: to be aware of having been beheaded, and some felt that there was window of awareness of some of twenty five seconds in which the decapitated head blink and move the eyes on command, and retain corneal reflex a two minutes span

ABSTRACT

Increase in agricultural production or steel manufacturing during Proto-Three Kingdoms Period enabled ancient people to establish well-organized ancient kingdoms in Korean peninsula. A pottery in which human skeletons were buried, the urn coffin, has been regarded as one of the frequently used burial system in ancient Korean society. Among them, the small-sized urn coffin was thought to be used for reburial of adult skeleton or burial for infants and children. In this report, we showed that the human adult bones were buried in a very unique pattern. Based on anthropological study, the dead person buried in the urn coffin died in his/her 30s; and every bone fragment belonged to human skull without exception. The dead person might be a warrior killed in action because there have been reports on exclusive burial of skull in a small-sized, ancient urn coffin in Japan, that was commonly interpreted as the burial of ancient warrior's heads decapitated during ancient battle, and were reburied in the burial ground. Nevertheless, considering that the cervical bones were not found along with the skull bone fragments, the tell tale sign of decapitation, more future studies are needed to confirm the hypothesis. However, even so, it could not be easily denied that very unique funeral customs: burial of human adult skull in a small-sized urn coffin, prevailed in the ancient Korean societies in certain regions.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, Aroclor 1254), synthetic chlorinated organic compounds, are known to decrease thyroid function, sperm count, and fertility, and increase the risk of testicular cancer; they may have serious effects on male reproduction. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible protective role of palmiwon on PCB-induced spermiotoxicity in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 90-day-old male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups, each consisting of ten animals. The control group (Group I) received corn oil, the second group of rats (Group II) was administered 2 mg/kg body weight/day of Aroclor 1254+corn oil intraperitoneally for 30 days. The third group of rats (Group III) was treated with 2 mg/kg body weight/day of Aroclor 1254+corn oil intraperitoneally plus palmiwon (300 mg/day) orally for 30 days. Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, the animals were killed by decapitation. Their serum testosterone levels was measured before and after the experimental medication was taken, and the number and motility of sperm, which had been collected from the cauda epididymal region, were evaluated. RESULTS: The results of this experiment show that treatment with palmiwon significantly improved sperm motility and number in rats that had been exposed to PCBs. There was no marked difference in body weight, testis weight, or epididymis weight among the groups. Nor were there any significant pathological differences in the testes among the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Palmiwon has the potential for treating PCB-induced spermiotoxicity. More experiments with larger samples and a longer period of treatment are needed.

ABSTRACT

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is the primary endocrine system to respond to stress. The HPA axis may be affected by increased level of corticotrophin-releasing factors under chronic stress and by chronic administration of monosodium glutamate (MSG). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether chronic MSG administration aggravates chronic variable stress (CVS)-induced behavioral and hormonal changes. Twenty-four adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 200~220 g, were divided into 4 groups as follows: water administration (CON), MSG (3 g/kg) administration (MSG), CVS, and CVS with MSG (3 g/kg) administration (CVS+MSG). In addition, for the purpose of comparing the effect on plasma corticosterone levels between chronic stress and daily care or acute stress, 2 groups were added at the end of the experiment; the 2 new groups were as follows: naive mice (n=7) and mice exposed to restraint stress for 2 h just before decapitation (A-Str, n=7). In an open field test performed after the experiment, the CVS+MSG group significant decrease in activity. The increase in relative adrenal weights in the CVS and CVS+MSG group was significantly greater than those in the CON and/or MSG groups. In spite of the increase in the relative adrenal weight, there was a significant decrease in the plasma corticosterone levels in the CVS+MSG group as compared to all other groups, except the naive group. These results suggest that impaired HPA axis function as well as the decrease in the behavioral activity in adult rats can be induced by chronic MSG administration under CVS rather than CVS alone.

ABSTRACT

Metabolic acidosis was shown to correlate with deterioration of renal function in patients with rhabdomyolysis. The present study was aimed to investigate whether the changes of type 3 Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE3), type 1 Na+/HCO3- cotransporter (NBC1), and Na+,K+-ATPase alpha1 subunit may play a role in the pathogenesis of metabolic acidosis in glycerol-induced experimental rhabdomyolysis. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were deprived of fluid intake for 24 hours, and then were injected with 50% glycerol in normal saline (10 mL/kg, intramuscularly). At 24 hours after the glycerol injection, rats were sacrificed by decapitation. Control rats were injected with normal saline. The protein expression of NHE3, NBC1 and Na+,K+-ATPase alpha1 subunit was determined in the cortex of the kidney by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. Following the treatment of glycerol, creatinine clearance was significantly decreased, and high anion gap metabolic acidosis developed. In the experimental group, the expression of Na+,K+-ATPase alpha1 subunit was significantly decreased in the cortex of the kidney. On the contrary, the expression of NHE3 and NBC1 was significantly increased. Immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the immunoblotting data. In conclusion, the coordinate up-regulation of NHE3 and NBC1 may play an adaptive role against the metabolic acidosis in glycerol-induced rhabdomyolysis.

ABSTRACT

This study was performed to determine the effect of soy isoflavones on brain development and function in rats. Forty Sprague-Dawley male rats were provided diets containing different levels of soy isoflavones for 6 weeks; 0 ppm (control), 50 ppm (low isoflavone intake; LI), 250 ppm (medium isoflavone intake; MI) and 500 ppm (high isoflavone intake; HI). Learning ability was evaluated by a Y-shaped water maze and the activity of acetylcholinesterase in brain was assayed after decapitation. Food intake and body weights as well as weights of brain, liver, spleen, heart and kidney showed no significant difference among the four groups, which means 500 ppm of isoflavones is safe. In the water maze test, the frequency of error counted when rats entered one end of the alley without platform was significantly lower in the HI group than in the control group, and the escape latency as swim time taken to escape on the hidden platform was significantly shorter in the HI group than in the LI and control groups. The activity of acetylcholinesterase of the brain was significantly higher in the HI and MI groups than in the control group. Therefore, the results indicate that isoflavones may improve the cognitive function without adverse effects.

ABSTRACT

Median raphe cyst is an uncommon condition occuring on the ventral median raphe from the glans penis to the anus and represents a defect in the embryologic development of the male genitalia. The cyst wall may derive from endoderm, ectoderm, or mucous glands which are a normal constitute of the male urethra. It is classified as either a dermoid cyst lined by stratified squamous epithelium of ectodermal origin or a mucous cyst lined by cuboidal or columnar epithelium of endodermal origin. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice. We report a case of an 11-year old boy with three median raphe cysts of the scrotum. The epithelial lining of the cysts was mainly composed of pseudostratified columnar cells with decapitation secretion and focally showed stratified squamous cells and a transitional zone of two types of cells. Immunohistochemically, pseudostratified columnar cells showed CK 7 and CK 13 positivity, but were negative for CK 20. Besides, stratified squamous cells were negative for CK 7, CK 13 and CK 20. We report a rare case of median raphe cyst that is a combined type of dermoid cyst and mucous cyst.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The present study was aimed to determine whether there exist an altered regulation of tubular transporters and nitric oxide system in the kidneys in maleic acid-nduced metabolic acidosis. METHODS: Male Sprague-awley rats were treated with maleic acid (2 mmol/kg, every 24 hours, intraperitoneally) for 2 days. Control rats were injected with saline. At 24 hours following the second injection, rats were killed by decapitation. Plasma HCO3-and anion gap were measured. The protein expression of type 3 Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE3), type 1 Na+:HCO3- cotransporter (NBC1), and aquaporin (AQP)-1 in the cortex of the kidneys was determined by Western blot analysis. In addition, the expression of isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) was determined. Contents of nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite/ nitrate, NOx) were also measured in urine by colorimetric assay. RESULTS: Plasma concentrations of HCO3- were significantly decreased following the treatment of maleic acid, while plasma anion gap was did not differ between the experimental and the control groups. In the experimental group, the protein expression of NHE3 was significantly increased in the cortex of the kidney although the expression of NBC1 was not altered significantly. The expression of inducible NOS (iNOS), endothelial NOS (eNOS), and neuronal NOS (nNOS) was significantly increased in the cortex of the kidney. Accordingly, urine NOx contents were increased in the experimental group. In contrast, the expression of AQP1 was not altered. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that upregulation of NHE3 and nitric oxide system may play a role in regulation of acid-ase balance.

ABSTRACT

Median raphe cysts are rare mid-line developmental cysts, which can arise at any point between the external urethral meatus and the anus. They most commonly affect the ventral aspect of the penis, usually near the glans. They tend to be solitary, unilocular cysts, and the inner lining is usually composed of pseudostratified columnar epithelium. We present a case of a 3-year-old boy with a median raphe cyst affecting the glans penis. The cyst, located near the urethral meatus, was slightly pruritic and 0.3cmx0.3cmx0.1cm in size. A shave biopsy, followed by CO2 laser ablation was performed, and histopathological examination revealed a unilocular cyst lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium, which showed decapitation secretion in part. For 2 years fallawing the shave biopsy, no clinical evidence of recurrence has been observed.
