Poraquel tiempo los informes señalan como primer caso el delprofesor Mabalo Lokela, director de la escuela de Yambuku.Debido a la escasez de recursos y falta de conocimiento,las monjas habían contribuido al desarrollo del brote, alusar una y otra vez las agujas sucias habían contagiado anumerosos pacientes y al enviarlos a morir a sus casas, laenfermedad se diseminó sin control en la comunidad.
