ABSTRACT

The pedagogical practices and projects of healthcare courses have been the target of interventions aimed at taking into account the needs of contemporary society. The training for pharmacists is no exception and, in this, the correlation between theory and practice is highlighted, along with the need for a comprehensive view of individuals and the environment that surrounds them. Based on these points, this article aimed to address the use of active teaching-learning methodologies in the Discipline of Pharmaceutical Care and Assistance of the Pharmacy Course at the Franciscan University Center (UNIFRA), reporting on the advances and difficulties observed. Each semester, seven case studies covering health problems, pharmacotherapy and problems relating to medications were conducted. The results highlighted the shaping of students who were capable of intervening in and constructing their own futures with responsibility and commitment towards humanistic and general training.

ABSTRACT

The establishment of the National Curricula Guidelines for PharmacyGraduate Courses (DCNF) arose many discussions on the formation of pharmacists, due to the changes caused in this formation. These changes involved, besides other aspects, the humanistic and critical part of this profession, which means to re-thinkthe pharmacist formation and even his own identity as professional, with a basically technical profile. This work focuses on the process of implementation of the DCNF inthe State of Rio de Janeiro. It aimed to verify how it is being developed and to identify some brunts, impediments and developments in this process. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with coordinators of selected courses, and curricula and pedagogical projects were analyzed, based on the DCNF. Results show that the construction of new courses was based on the previous curriculum. Few students and teachers took part in the process, and also there were conflicts among departments, besides inadequate university structure. Formation guidelines for healthcare focusing on the Unified Health System (SUS) stimulated discussions on the health system and integration of students, but also arose questions and worry, since this formation was considered restrictive for the work market. The implementation ofproposals faced difficulties concerning teaching working hours, integration ofstudents into some training areas and the lack of investments in the public sector, for infrastructure and personnel, besides difficulties of transition between curricula. No course had systematic initiatives for teacher development, and the distinct teachinglearningsceneries (and partnerships with health services) still are very incipient. Thecoordinators pointed some challenges to be tackled so as to change the pharmacist’s profile: to sever the technicist concept of formation; to integrate the pharmacist in health multi-professional teamS...

ABSTRACT

Pharmacology, like other basic science disciplines, is still taught didactically in many medical schools. Increasing number of drugs, changes on general principles of mechanisms of drug action and more information on properties of drugs require innovative approaches to undergraduate education. Research in medical and pharmaceutical education is increasingly utilizing a variety of innovative teaching methods to ultimately improve retention of knowledge. This paper describes implementation of new task-based and problem-based pharmacotherapy course for 3rd year pre-clinical medical students at Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Omdurman Islamic University

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effectiveness of a computer-based program (CBL) introduced to improve the clinical and patient history taking skills of clinical pharmacists in the area of diabetes management. This program involved a self-learning approach utilizing interactive digital videos, video simulations, and audio clips. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The present study compared the pre- and post-test results of two groups of final year pharmacy students. The study group used the CBL program and the control group was exposed to formal lectures and discussions. RESULTS: Eighty-three volunteers entered the present study. Forty-three were constituted into the study group, and forty acted as the control group. The overall results showed that the study group post-test scores in all basic knowledge areas were significantly higher than the control group (p = 0.001). Whereas, there was no statistical difference between groups in patient history taking skills (p = 0.645). Nevertheless, the post-test scores of SOAP writing skills in the study group were statistically higher than the control group (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Overall, the CBL program was considered effective in the development of basic knowledge of diabetes and in the improvement of patient history taking skills.
