ABSTRACT

In the present study we observed the effect of oral potassium load on intracellular levels of sodium and potassium in erythrocytes and extracellular levels of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in albino Wistar rats. Rats were given oral doses of 1% and 2% KCI respectively for eighteen days in drinking water [The approximate dose was 0.13 +/- 0.01 and 0.32 +/- 0.04g KCl/ml/day]. We found significant effects on serum sodium and potassium and intracellular potassium in erythrocytes in both 1% and 2% KCI load. There is significant increase in intracellular sodium after 2% KCI load but not after 1%KCI load. Serum calcium was decreased and magnesium was increased significantly after 1% KCI load but remain normal after 2% KCI load. We suggest that KCI load might stimulate the increase secretion of aldosterone which increase sodium readsorption and secretion of potassium from the cell by Na+ - K+ ATPase pump. A high potassium load [2%KCI] may increase both the intracellular level of sodium and potassium due to Na +/H+ antiporter. Na +/Ca+ 2 exchanger normalizes the calcium concentration
