ABSTRACT

The Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 listed schistosomiasis among the leading 100 causes of death in Brazil, responsible for 3.6% of the estimated total of deaths globally. Eye and adnexa are very rarely affected by schistosomiasis mansoni, with limited documentation of ocular pathology in this setting. This short communication reports ocular histolopathological findings in a murine model of neuroschistosomiasis mansoni. Lesions were found in the bulbar conjunctiva, lacrimal gland, choroid and corneoscleral limbus.

ABSTRACT

Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is a form of uveitis that can potentially lead to blindness. In Brazil and other parts of South America, diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis is an important cause of posterior uveitis in children and healthy young adults. If diagnosed and treated in early stage, allows a resolution of symptoms with improvement of visual acuity. If the disease progresses to the late stage, can result in significant visual loss. In this study, through a literature review, we describe the main characteristics of this disease, including the following aspects: history, etiology, physiopathology, clinical features, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

To develop a method to analyse pupillary disturbances in patients with chronic Chagas disease in an endemic area, ten chagasic and ten normal subjects were matched according to sex, age and race. Pupillary diameter and area were determined using projection and topography techniques and compared between groups. Both pupils were visualised simultaneously. In each case three photographs were taken under standardised illumination. The first photo was obtained without medication, the second, 30 minutes after instillation of 0,1 per cent pilocarpine and the last 30 minutes after instillation of 3 per cent phenylephrine (60 minutes after pilocarpine). Pupils of chagasic patients had a statistically significant greater initial diameter and area, irregularity of the pupil border, greater percentual reduction in diameter and area after pilocarpine 0.1 per cent and greater percentual increase in diameter and area after 3 per cent phenylephrine eyedrops. The method developed for this study was considered satisfactory. The results suggest ocular autonomic nervous system disturbances in chagasic patients.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

We report three cases of spontaneous extrusion of cysticercosis. In two cases, it got extruded from the orbit and in one case from the subconjunctival space. Extrusion of cysticercosis was associated with improvement in clinical signs and symptoms.
