ABSTRACT

Google Trends (GT) is an online portal that provides data on user search patterns. It is currently widely used in the vast majority of medical specialties. Objective: to analyze publications in gastroenterology that have used GT as an epidemiological tool. Methods: Using PubMed, Lilacs, Google Schoolar Academic and Scopus, we searched for gastroenterology articles that contained GT in their title or abstract between the years 2011 to 2021. Titles/abstracts had to also include at least one out of 49 terms related to digestive diseases from symptoms to treatments. Results: The 30 articles selected addressed topics such as symptoms, different pathologies including infectious, diagnostic methods and diets, among others. Conclusions: GT is a very useful tool to measure what people search for on the Internet and allows us to detect epidemic outbreaks, evaluate the impact of the days dedicated to some pathology as well as the impact of publications on the network of the public and doctors.

ABSTRACT

The origin and history of the events are occasionally forgotten due to the vertiginous development of the society that develops progressively without discerning that development is the product of the correct materials and human resources planning made by those who devoted their lives, with hope and eagerness, to a profession requiring so much humanism and sensibility as Medicine. This work was aimed to shortly expose the development of Gastroenterology in Matanzas, and that way to render homage to those specialists, that even if they are not already alive, or at the present are not part of the working collectives that today continue their work, deserve to be remembered because of their important contribution to the development of this specialty in the province (AU).

ABSTRACT

A systematic review (SR) is a research methodology that involves a comprehensive search for and analysis of relevant studies on a specific topic. A strict and objective research process is conducted that comprises a systematic and comprehensive literature search in accordance with predetermined inclusion/exclusion criteria, and an assessment of the risk of bias of the selected literature. SRs require a multidisciplinary approach that necessitates cooperation with clinical experts, methodologists, other experts, and statisticians. A meta-analysis (MA) is a statistical method of quantitatively synthesizing data, where possible, from the primary literature selected for the SR. Review articles differ from SRs in that they lack a systematic methodology such as a literature search, selection of studies according to strict criteria, assessment of risk bias, and synthesis of the study results. The importance of evidence-based medicine (EBM) in the decision-making for public policy has recently been increasing thanks to the realization that it should be based on scientific research data. SRs and MAs are essential for EBM strategy and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. This review addresses the current trends in SRs and MAs in the field of hepatology via a search of recently published articles in the Cochrane Library and Ovid-MEDLINE.

ABSTRACT

The pancreas is a hidden organ. The level of our knowledge in the pancreatology is lower as compared to other issues of gastroenterology and hepatology. The history of pancreatology is rich in famous discoveries with considerable impact on the physiology and the medical sciences. However, pancreatic diseases nowadays have no specific treatment. The situation of pancreatology in Chile is even worse than in other parts of the world. In this paper, we share some reflection about current and future possibilities.
