ABSTRACT

The species of Pugilina cochlidium (Linnaeus, 1758) and P. erecta (Vermeij & Raben, 2009) has been studied in the present study. The female can be differentiated from the male by the absence of the cephalic penis and a complicated genital aparatus visible through the mantle skirt in both the sexes. In other aspects of the external features of female are quite to males. In both species the digestive system was similar with few differences in structure between each other. It consists of buccal mass, proboscis, salivary glands, accessory salivary glands, oesophagus, stomach, intestine, rectum and anus. The nervous system in both P. cochlidium and P. erecta is constituted by six ganglia which forms the circumoesophgeal ganglionic ring. Among the neogastropods there is a similarity in the organization of the reproductive systems. The female reproductive system is more complicated than that of male. The sexes are separated in these two species. The gross morphology of the reproductive system of P. cochlidium and P. erecta was almost similar. The present study aims to describe the digestive system, nervous system and reproductive system of two gastropods species P. cochlidium and P. erecta.


As espécies de Pugilina cochlidium (Linnaeus, 1758) e P. erecta (Vermeij & Raben, 2009) foram tomadas no presente estudo. A fêmea pode ser diferenciada do macho pela ausência do pênis cefálico e um complicado complexo genital visível através da saia do manto em ambos os sexos. Em outros aspectos das características externas da fêmea são bastante semelhantes aos dos machos. Em ambas as espécies, o sistema digestivo era semelhante, com poucas diferenças de estrutura entre si. Consiste em massa bucal, probóscide, glândulas salivares, glândulas salivares acessórias, esôfago, estômago, intestino, reto e ânus. O sistema nervoso em P. cochlidium e P. erecta é constituído por seis gânglios que formam um anel ganglionar circunoesofágico. Entre os neogastrópodes, há uma semelhança na organização dos sistemas reprodutivos. O sistema reprodutivo feminino é mais complicado que o masculino. Os sexos são separados nessas duas espécies. A morfologia macroscópica do sistema reprodutivo de P. cochlidium e P. erecta foi quase similar. O presente estudo tem como objetivo descrever o sistema digestivo, sistema nervoso e sistema reprodutivo de duas espécies, P. cochlidium e P. erecta.

ABSTRACT

Melanoides tuberculata has invaded several aquatic ecosystems in the Neotropical region. This species shows high adaptive capacity and plasticity, establishing itself in several basins, promoting negative impacts on environments and native species. Here, we determine the growth parameters and the population structure of this species, in a semi-arid environment, in Northeast Brazil (Pernambuco state). Monthly captures were conducted at three types of substrate: site 1: soft bottom with macrophytes, site 2: soft bottom without macrophytes, and site 3: gravel and rocks. Shells were classified as occupied or empty, and their shell length (SL) and opening width (SW) were measured. The growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy’s model were estimated from the size-length frequency distribution using the ELEFAN I. Also, the maturity was verified, through the size at onset of maturity (SOM - 14.85 mm SL) proposed in the literature. A total of 1,013 individuals were collected, with shells varying from 7 to 39 mm SL and mean density of 84.42 (± 3.86) individuals m-2. The substrate with the largest number of mollusks was the site 1. Largest amount of empty shells was detected at site 3. Growth of M. tuberculata indicates rapid increment, with k = 0.56, L∞ = 42 mm and t0 = -0.26 years. The mean estimated age for the species was 0.95 years. According to the SOM, 86% of individuals sampled were considered mature.

Abstract:The endangered species Strombus gigas is a marine gastropod of significant economic importance through the Greater Caribbean region. In contrast to phenotypic plasticity, the role of genetics on shell variations in S. gigas has not been addressed so far, despite its importance in evolution, management and conservation of this species. This work used geometric morphometrics to investigate the phenotypic variation of 219 shells of S. gigas from eight sites of the Colombian Southwest Caribbean. Differences in mean size between sexes and among sites were contrasted by analysis of variance. Allometry was tested by multivariate regression and the hypothesis of common slope was contrasted by covariance multivariate analysis. Differences in the shell shape among sites were analyzed by principal component analysis. Sexual size dimorphism was not significant, whereas sexual shape dimorphism was significant and variable across sites. Differences in the shell shape among sites were concordant with genetic differences based on microsatellite data, supporting its genetic background. Besides, differences in the shell shape between populations genetically similar suggest a role of phenotypic plasticity in the morphometric variation of the shell shape. These outcomes evidence the role of genetic back- ground and phenotypic plasticity in the shell shape of S. gigas. Thus, geometric morphometrics of shell shape may constitute a complementary tool to explore the genetic diversity of this species. Rev. Biol. Trop. 64 (4): 1585-1595. Epub 2016 December 01.


Resumen:La especie en peligro, Strombus gigas, es un gastrópodo marino de importancia económica en la región del Gran Caribe. En contraste con la plasticidad fenotípica, el papel de la genética en la variación de la concha en S. gigas no ha sido abordado hasta ahora, a pesar de su importancia evolutiva, manejo y conservación. Este trabajo utilizó la morfometría geométrica para investigar la variación fenotípica de la concha de S.gigas en ocho sitios del suroeste del Caribe colombiano. Las diferencias en el tamaño promedio entre sexos y sitios se contrastaron mediante análisis de varianza. La alometría se evaluó mediante regresión multivariada y la hipótesis de pendientes similares se contrastó mediante un análisis multivariado de covarianza. Las diferencias en la conformación de las conchas entre sitios se exploraron mediante análisis de componentes principales. El dimorfismo sexual en el tamaño no fue significativo, mientras que el dimorfismo sexual en la conformación fue significativo y variable entre los sitios. Las diferencias en la conformación de la concha entre sitios fueron concordantes con diferencias genéticas basadas en microsatélites, lo cual apoya su base genética. Además, las diferencias en conformación de la concha entre poblaciones genéticamente similares sugieren un papel de la plasticidad fenotípica en la variación morfométrica de la conformación de la concha. Estos resultados evidencian el papel de la genética y la plasticidad fenotípica en la conformación de la concha de S. gigas. Por lo tanto, la morfometría geométrica de la conformación de la concha puede constituir una herramienta complementaria para explorar la diversidad genética de esta especie.

ABSTRACT

The queen conch Strombus gigas represents one of the most important fishery resources of the Caribbean but heavy fishing pressure has led to the depletion of stocks throughout the region, causing the inclusion of this species into CITES Appendix II and IUCN’s Red-List. In Mexico, the queen conch is managed through a minimum fishing size of 200mm shell length and a fishing quota which usually represents 50% of the adult biomass. The objectives of this study were to determine the intrinsic population growth rate of the queen conch population of Xel-Ha, Quintana Roo, Mexico, and to assess the effects of a regulated fishing impact, simulating the extraction of 50% adult biomass on the population density. We used three different minimum size criteria to demonstrate the effects of minimum catch size on the population density and discuss biological implications. Demographic data was obtained through capture-mark-recapture sampling, collecting all animals encountered during three hours, by three divers, at four different sampling sites of the Xel-Ha inlet. The conch population was sampled each month between 2005 and 2006, and bimonthly between 2006 and 2011, tagging a total of 8 292 animals. Shell length and lip thickness were determined for each individual. The average shell length for conch with formed lip in Xel-Ha was 209.39±14.18mm and the median 210mm. Half of the sampled conch with lip ranged between 200mm and 219mm shell length. Assuming that the presence of the lip is an indicator for sexual maturity, it can be concluded that many animals may form their lip at greater shell lengths than 200mm and ought to be considered immature. Estimation of relative adult abundance and densities varied greatly depending on the criteria employed for adult classification. When using a minimum fishing size of 200mm shell length, between 26.2% and up to 54.8% of the population qualified as adults, which represented a simulated fishing impact of almost one third of the population. When conch extraction was simulated using a classification criteria based on lip thickness, it had a much smaller impact on the population density. We concluded that the best management strategy for S. gigas is a minimum fishing size based on a lip thickness, since it has lower impact on the population density, and given that selective fishing pressure based on size may lead to the appearance of small adult individuals with reduced fecundity. Furthermore, based on the reproductive biology and the results of the simulated fishing, we suggest a minimum lip thickness of ≥15mm, which ensures the protection of reproductive stages, reduces the risk of overfishing, leading to non-viable density reduction. El caracol rosa Strombus gigas representa una de las especies de mayor importancia pesquera en el Caribe, pero la creciente presión pesquera ha llevado al deterioro de las poblaciones en toda la región, llevando a la inclusión de esta especie en el apéndice II de CITES y la lista roja de UICN. En México, el caracol rosa se maneja con una talla mínima de pesca de 200mm longitud de heliconcha y una cuota pesquera que generalmente representa el 50% de la biomasa adulta. Este estudio tuvo como objetivos determinar la tasa intrínseca de crecimiento poblacional del caracol rosa en Xel-Ha, Quintana Roo, México, y evaluar el efecto de un esfuerzo pesquero regulado, simulando la extracción del 50% de la biomasa adulta. Utilizamos tres diferentes criterios de talla mínima para la pesca, para evaluar el efecto de ésta sobre la densidad de la población y discutimos las implicaciones bilógicas asociadas. Los datos demográficos se obtuvieron mediante un muestreo de marcaje-recaptura, recolectando todos los animales presentes, durante tres horas, con tres buzos, en cuatro sitios diferentes de la caleta. En 2005 los muestreos fueron mensuales, y de 2006 a 2011 bimensuales, marcándose un total de 8 292 caracoles. Se obtuvo la longitud de heliconcha y grosor de labio de cada individuo. La talla media de caracoles con labio formado fue de 209.39±14.18mm y la mediana de 210mm. La mitad de los caracoles con un labio formado presentaban tallas de 200mm a 219mm longitud de heliconcha. Suponiendo que la presencia del labio es un indicador de madurez sexual, se puede concluir que muchos animales alcanzan la madurez sexual a tallas mayores de 200mm longitud de heliconcha y deberían ser considerados inmaduros. La estimación de la abundancia relativa y densidad de adultos varía ampliamente según el criterio de clasificación utilizado. Cuando se aplicó una talla mínima de 200mm longitud, el 26.2% a 54.8% de la población calificó como adulta, correspondiendo a un impacto pesquero simulado de casi un tercio de la población. El impacto fue menor simulando la extracción de adultos, utilizando un criterio de clasificación basado en grosor de labio. Se concluyó que la mejor estrategia de manejo para S. gigas es una talla mínima basada en el grosor de labio, ya que esta medida reduce el impacto sobre la densidad poblacional, y por el otro lado disminuye la presión selectiva sobre la talla, lo cual conduce a la aparición de individuos pequeños con fecundidad inferior. Más allá, basado en la biología reproductiva y los resultados de las simulaciones, recomendamos un grosor de labio mínimo de ≥15mm para la pesca, ya que esta medida asegura la protección de las etapas reproductivas y reduce el riesgo de sobrepesca, el cual llevaría a reducciones no viables de la densidad poblacional.

ABSTRACT

Quintana Roo has over 500 species of gastropods but little is known of the larval stages. We sampled four sites monthly from January to December 2008 with plankton tows in triplicate and a conical net of 300μm mesh. Puerto Morelos had the highest records (41.26±63.23 larvae•10m-3), followed by Mahahual (14.78±28.21 larvae•10m-3); Sian Ka’an and Xel-Ha had the lowest densities (9.16±16.73 and 3.35±4.33 larvae•10m-3, respectively). May and August had the highest records (33.66±67.39 and 31.78±25.92 larvae•10m-3, respectively), March and December the lowest (1.70±1.88 and 3.18±5.27 larvae•10m-3, respectively). There were differences in the spatial mean density (p <0.0001) and time (p= 0.0275). We identified 33 species, genera Strombus, Natica, Cerithium, Nassarius, Neritidae, Cerithiopsis, Nannodiela, Rissoina, Bulla, Bittium, Modulus and Prunum, of which 28 species were recorded in Puerto Morelos. Natica, Epithonium and Cerithium had the highest incidence in the four locations.


Quintana Roo tiene mas de 500 especies de gasterópodos pero muy poco se conoce de los estadios larvales. Muestreamos cuatro sitios mensualmente de enero a diciembre de 2008 con arrastres de plancton por triplicado y con una red cónica con malla de 300μm. Puerto Morelos tuvo los mayores registros (41.26±63.23 larvas•10m-3), seguido por Mahahual (14.78±28.21 larvas•10m-3), Sian Ka’an y Xel-Há presentaron las densidades menores (9.16±16.73 y 3.35±4.33 larvas•10m-3, respectivamente). Mayo y agosto presentaron los mayores registros (33.66±67.39 y 31.78±25.92 larvas•10m-3, respectivamente), marzo y diciembre los menores (1.70±1.88 y 3.18±5.27 larvas•10 m-3 respectivamente). Se registraron diferencias significativas en la densidad media espacial (p:<0.0001) y temporal (p: 0.0275). Identificamos un total de 33 especies de gasterópodos de los géneros Strombus, Natica, Cerithium, Nassarius, Neritidae, Cerithiopsis, Nannodiela, Rissoina, Bulla, Bittium, Modulus y Prunum, de las cuales 28 especies se registraron en Puerto Morelos. Natica, Epithonium y Cerithium fueron los géneros con mayor incidencia en las cuatro localidades.

Phenotypic variability of the shell in Neritinidae (Gastropoda: Neritimorpha) in Puerto Rican rivers. Gastropods of the Neritinidae family exhibit an amphidromous life cycle and an impressive variability in shell coloration in Puerto Rican streams and rivers. Various nominal species have been described, but Neritina virginea [Linné 1758], N. punctulata [Lamarck 1816] and N. reclivata [Say 1822] are the only broadly reported. However, recent studies have shown that these three species are sympatric at the river scale and that species determination might be difficult due to the presence of intermediate color morphs. Individuals (8 751) were collected from ten rivers across Puerto Rico, and from various segments and habitats in Mameyes River (the most pristine island-wide) during three years (2000-2003), and they were assigned to one of seven phenotypes corresponding to nominal species and morphs (non-nominal species). The “axial lines and dots” morph corresponding to N. reclivata was the most frequent island-wide, while the patelliform N. punctulata was scant, but the only found in headwater reaches. The “yellowish large tongues” phenotype, typical of N. virginea s.s. was the most frequent in the river mouth. The frequency of secondary phenotypes varied broadly among rivers, along the rivers, and among habitats, seemly influenced by salinity and predation gradients. The occurrence of individuals with coloration shifts after predation injuries, suggests phenotypic plasticity in the three nominal species, and urges for the use of molecular markers to unravel the possible occurrence of a species complex, and to understand the genetic basis of polymorphism. The longitudinal distribution of individual sizes, population density and egg capsules suggested the adaptive value of upstream migration, possibly to avoid marine predators. Rev. Biol. Los gasterópodos Neritinidae de Puerto Rico presentan un ciclo de vida anfídromo y exhiben polimorfismo en los patrones de coloración de la concha. Se identificó que la oviposición aumenta río arriba conforme los individuos alcanzan mayores tamaños, a pesar de que la densidad poblacional disminuye. La frecuencia de siete fenotipos previamente establecidos se analizó en diez ríos de la isla durante dos años (n=8 751 individuos). Debido a que el río Mameyes es el más conservado, se tomó como modelo para estudiar la variación a lo largo del río y entre hábitats durante tres años. El fenotipo de líneas axiales y puntos (N. virginea) fue el predominante en toda la isla y el fenotipo pateloide (N. punctulata) fue el menos frecuente. Se observaron diferencias significativas de las frecuencias de los fenotipos (principalmente en los secundarios) entre ríos, a lo largo de ellos y entre hábitats. Esta variabilidad espacial puede responder a gradientes de salinidad y depredación. Se observó plasticidad fenotípica en algunos individuos.

The queen conch, Strombus gigas, is a gastropod of commercial importance in the Caribbean. Population studies are based on size frequency analysis, using either length or weight parameters for the whole live organism. This contribution used mark-recapture data to estimate the von Bertalanffy equation parameters and population number variation within a non harvest population from a protected area, to clarify the biometric parameters that better suit for the whole population, or for the juvenile and adult fractions. Conchs from Xel- Ha Park were monthly sampled from November 2001 to August 2005. Every conch found was measured and marked with a numbered tag that identified month and locality; and monthly abundance was estimated with Jolly’s method. Length, lip thickness and weight increments were used to estimate the von Bertalanffy growth equation parameters with Appeldoorn’s subroutine of FISAT program. The population number varied through the study, with a minimum of 49 in April 2003 and maximum of 9 848 during June 2005. Conchs make only temporary use of Xel-Ha cove. Shell length gave the best fit for the juvenile fraction: L∞=251, K=0.3, C=0.8 Wp=0.3; and lip thickness for adults: L∞=47.78, K=0.17, C=0.1, Wp=0.86, while, the whole population was bet- ter represented by weight: L∞=3850, K=0.36, C=0.8, Wp=0.3. A maximum age of 19 years was estimated from the population. Natural mortality was 0.49/year for juveniles and 0.29/year for adults. There were two pulses of recruitment: fall-winter and summer. It is concluded that population studies from length frequency data, should be analyzed independently in two groups, shell for the juvenile fraction and lip thickness for the adult fraction, or if it is not possible to analyze the population fractions separately, weight should be used to avoid miss calculation of the age structure.


El caracol reina, Strombus gigas, es un gasterópodo de importancia comercial en el Caribe. Los estudios poblacionales se basan en el análisis de las fluctuaciones de las frecuencias de tallas, usando ya sea la longitud de la concha o el peso total de los organismos vivos. Este aporte usa datos de marcaje recaptura para estimar los parámetros de la ecuación de von Bertalanffy y variaciones en el número de la población, para una población sin captura dentro de un área protegida, para aclarar que parámetros se adaptan mejor para estudios de la población entera o para las fracciones de juveniles y adultos por separado. Se muestrearon mensualmente, caracoles del parque Xel-Ha, de Noviembre 2001 a Agosto 2005. Todas las conchas encontradas se se midieron y marcaron con una etiqueta numerada que identificó la fecha de muestréo y la localidad. Las variaciones en abundancia mensual se estimó con el método de Jolly. Se emplearon la longitud de la concha, el grosor de labio y el peso vivo de los animales para determinar los parámeros de la ecuación de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy, usando la subrutina de Appeldoorn del programa FISAT. La población varía a lo largo del estudio, con un mínimo de 49 organismos en abril 2003 y un máximo de 9 848 durante junio 2005. Los caracoles solo hacen uso temporal de la caleta de Xel-Ha. El mejor ajuste para juveniles se obtuvo con la longitud de la concha: L∞=251, K=0.3, C=0.8 Wp=0.3: mientras que para adultos se obtuvo con el grosor del labio: L∞=47.78, K=0.17, C=0.1, Wp=0.86; y la población total se ve mejor representada por el peso: L∞=3850, K=0.36, C=0.8, Wp=0.3. Se estimó una edad máxima para el total de la población de 19 años. Con mortalidad natural de 0.49 año-1 para juveniles y 0.29 año-1 para adultos. Hubieron dos pulsos de reclutamiento: otoño-invierno y verano. Se concluye que los estudios poblacionales realizados a partir de estructura de tallas, deben de analizar por separado dos grupos o fracciones de la población, usando el peso para juveniles y grosor del labio para adultos, de no ser posible analizar la población por separado, debe de emplearse el peso para evitar una subestimación en la estructura de edad.

ABSTRACT

The pink conch Eustrombus gigas is an important fisheries resource. At the regional level in the Caribbean, over-exploitation and habitat destruction have caused a decrease in the abundance of this resource. In order to provide necessary information for the species management in Mexico, this work aimed to analyze the total density, adult density, size structure and reproductive behavior of pink conch population at Banco Chinchorro during 2009-2010. Data from three seasons were obtained (rainy, dry and cold fronts periods) in three areas: Norte (North), Centro (Center) and Sur (South). The organisms were separated into two groups: (a) the criteria based upon legal harvest in Mexico: legal size conchs (siphonal length≥200mm) and illegal size conchs (siphonal length<200mm), and (b) the criteria based upon sexual maturity using the 15mm lip thickness standard: lip<15mm as juvenile conch and lip≥15mm as adult conch. Copulation, spawning, egg masses and aggregations were evaluated as reproductive evidences. The highest total density was observed during the dry season with 384ind./ha, and the lowest during the rainy season with 127ind./ha. The highest density was reported at Sur (385ind./ha) and the lowest at Norte (198ind./ha). The highest adult density was observed during the rainy season (8.33ind./ha), and the lowest occurred in the dry season (6.11ind./ha). Adult density values were 5.55, 7.05 and 8.33ind./ha for Centro, Sur and Norte areas, respectively. Adult densities were lower than the threshold needed for reproduction, and 42% of the population may be vulnerable to fishing, as they had the minimum size for catch (Lsi 200mm). Furthermore, only 2.2% of the population reached a Gl>15mm as sexual maturity indicator. During the study period, only six evidences of reproductive activity were observed. The smaller densities reported at Banco Chinchorro may cause reproduction events to be almost absent which in turn is sufficient ...


Eustrombus gigas es uno de los recursos pesqueros costeros más valiosos en la región del Caribe y constituye un molusco con un elevado valor estético y ecológico. En esta investigación se evalúa su densidad total, densidad de adultos, la estructura de tallas y frecuencia de evidencias reproductivas en Banco Chinchorro, México, periodo 2009-2010; durante tres períodos (de lluvias, seca y de frentes fríos) en tres zonas: Norte, Centro y Sur. La densidad total para el área de estudio varió de 127ind./ha en lluvias a 384ind./ha en seca, la menor densidad se presentó en la zona Norte del Banco (198ind./ha) y la mayor en la zona Sur (385ind./ha). La densidad de caracoles adultos fue baja (6.11ind./ha en seca y 8.33ind./ha en lluvias y 5.55, 7.05 y 8.33ind./ha para las zonas Centro, Sur y Norte, respectivamente). Las densidades de adultos estuvieron por debajo del umbral mínimo necesario para mantener la reproducción. El 42% de la población es vulnerable a la pesca (Lsi≥200mm); sin embargo, solo 2.2% de la población alcanza un Gl>15mm. Solo se observaron seis evidencias de reproducción durante el período de estudio, lo que señala la presencia del efecto Allee en la población y la urgente necesidad del cierre de su pesquería. Se proponen tres puntos importantes para el manejo de la especie: cierre de la pesca, monitoreo de la población y la implementación refugios pesqueros.

ABSTRACT

In the continental Colombian Caribbean the conch resource exploitation and the status of snails populations has been poorly studied, which are reflected in the lack of fisheries management. This study assesses composition, population density and distribution of the gastropods species that make conch resource in La Guajira region. Underwater visual censuses for snails were performed between September-November 2009 in 145 100x4m (400m²) transects, spanning a total area of 56 920m² between Riohacha and Cabo de la Vela. The study was complemented with the evaluation of composition, abundance and size of gastropods conch found in the discarded-by-fishermen shell mounds in 13 beaches. In October 2010 another 40 transects were evaluated (16 000m²) from the Southern of Riohacha to the Camarones village (La Guajira). We found a total of 9 911 snails belonging to 12 species, the most abundant being Strombus pugilis with 8 912 individuals and an average density of 1 538.4±3 662.6 ind./ha , followed by Vasum muricatum with 374 individuals and an average density of 51.8±91.2 ind./ha. Calculating the importance value index (IVI) for both living organisms as the empty shells on beaches, shows that Turbinella angulata is the most used species by artisanal fishermen in the region. Cassis madagascariensis and Cassis tuberosa are also important snail resources in the region (as suggested by the number of empty shells found in beaches), but its densities were low. Strombus gigas, with only three living organisms found in the area, presented the lowest abundance ever found in the Colombian Caribbean (0.52±3.6 ind./ha), showing that queen conch population in La Guajira can- not support commercial exploitation. The abundance of discarded S. gigas shells on beaches suggests resource exploitation in the recent past. Results remarks the urgency of implementing management plans for snail fisheries in the region.


En el Caribe continental colombiano el aprovechamiento del recurso caracol y el estado de sus poblaciones han sido poco estudiados, esto se refleja en la carencia de un ordenamiento pesquero. Se evaluó la composición, densidad poblacional y distribución de las especies que conforman ese recurso en La Guajira. Se realizaron censos visuales entre septiembre y noviembre 2009 en 145 transectos de 100x4m (400m²), abarcando un área de 56 920m² entre Riohacha y el Cabo de la Vela. También se evaluó la composición, abundancia y talla de conchas de gasterópodos en depósitos de conchas vacías en 13 playas. En octubre 2010 se evaluaron 40 transectos más (16 000m²), desde el sur de Riohacha hasta Camarones. Se encontraron 9 911 caracoles de 12 especies, siendo Strombus pugilis el más abundante con 8 912 individuos y densidad de 1 538.4±3 662.6 ind./ha, seguido por Vasum muricatum con 374 individuos y densidad de 51.8±91.2 ind./ha. El índice de valor de importancia (IVI) de caracoles vivos y de conchas en las playas, muestran a Turbinella angulata como la especie más aprovechada por pescadores artesanales. Los resultados denotan la urgencia de realizar planes de manejo pesquero para este recurso en la región.

ABSTRACT

Mangrove deforestation is widespread in the Greater Caribbean but its impact on macrobenthos has not been evaluated to date. In order to assess the impact of mangrove conversion to pasture, densities and shell sizes of two dominant gastropods (Neritina virginea and Melampus coffeus) were compared among four mangrove types: 1) Rhizophora mangle-dominated fringing mangroves, 2) Avicennia germinans-dominated basin mangroves, 3) Mixed-species basin mangroves, and 4) A. germinansbasin mangroves converted to pastures, in the Turbo River Delta (Urabá Gulf, Colombia). Mangrove types were polygon-delimited with satellite images and color aerial photographs were taken in 2009. various (n<5) polygons per mangrove type were sampled in January, July and December 2009, and a total (n<20) 0.025m²-quadrats were randomly placed along each polygon. Forest structure variables, pore-water physico-chemical variables and sediment-grain metrics were measured in the four mangrove types. Mean density and size of both gastropod species were measured. The results showed that the mean density and size of both species were significantly greater in R. mangle-fringing mangroves. N. virginea density decreased gradually towards the A. germinans-basin mangroves seemly related to the diadromous life-history. This species nearly disappeared in the neighboring pastures because individuals were constrained to a few remaining flooded areas. In the pastures, M. coffeus individuals were clumped in the remaining A. germinans trees due to its climbing behavior as a pulmonate. We hypothesize that the decline of these two gastropods was related to physical microhabitat (e.g. trees, prop roots, and seedlings) degradation, and alteration of soil properties (e.g. temperature, pH, organic matter content). Finally, we also hypothesize that the local extinction of N. virginea due to clear-cutting may exert strong negative effects on the ecosystem function because it is a dominant omnivore.


El delta del río Turbo es una de las áreas del golfo de Urabá, Colombia donde la tala de manglar es más extensa y activa, por lo tanto, se evaluó el impacto de la conversión de manglar a potrero, comparando la densidad y talla promedio de dos gasterópodos (Neritina virginea y Melampus coffeus), variables dasonómicas, físico-químicas intersticiales y granulométricas del suelo entre varios parches de: 1) manglar de franja, 2) manglar de cuenca, 3) manglar de cuenca mixto y 4) manglar de cuenca convertido a potrero, en el delta del río Turbo de este golfo, entre enero y diciembre 2009. Las densidades y tallas de los gasterópodos fueron mayores en el manglar de franja. N. virginea fue muy abundante pero disminuyó hacia el manglar de cuenca (debido a sus hábitos diádromos), y desapareció casi completamente en los potreros, donde los individuos estuvieron agregados en las pocas áreas anegadas. En los potreros, los individuos de M. coffeus estuvieron agrupados en los árboles remanentes debido a su hábito arborícola y su condición de pulmonado. Se sugiere que la escasez de los gasterópodos está relacionada con la degradación del microhábitat físico, y la alteración de propiedades del suelo. Finalmente, también planteamos que la extinción local de N. virginea debida a la tala puede ejercer fuertes efectos negativos sobre la función ecosistémica debido a que es un omnívoro dominante.

Melampus coffeus belongs to a primitive group of pulmonate mollusks found mainly in the upper levels of the marine intertidal zone. They are common in the neotropical mangroves. Little is known about the biology of this species, particularly about its reproduction. The aim of this study was to 1) characterize the morphology and histology of M. coffeus' gonad; 2) describe the main gametogenesis events and link them to a range of maturity stages; 3) chronologically evaluate the frequency of the different maturity stages and their relation to environmental factors such as water, air and sediment temperatures, relative humidity, salinity and rainfall; and 4) characterize M. coffeus' spawning, eggs and newly hatched veliger larvae. Samples were collected monthly between February, 2007 and January, 2009 from the mangroves of Praia de Arpoeiras, Acaraú County, State of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. The characterization of the gonad development stages was carried out using routine histological techniques. The results of this study show that Melampus coffeus is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. The follicles have masculine and feminine elements, interleaved within the gonad. M. coffeus presents a well-defined synchronous reproductive cycle, showing successive maturation, release and resting periods. The average diameter of the oocytes was negatively correlated with salinity and positively correlated with rainfall. The results show that no reproductive activity occurs during periods of drought. After the dry season, the increasing rainfall levels and reduced salinity lead to the appearance of very dense populations, predominantly composed of small individuals.


Melampus coffeus encontra-se em um grupo primitivo de moluscos pulmonados, primordialmente marinhos, habitantes dos níveis superiores da zona entremarés, comum em manguezais do Oceano Atlântico. Pouco se sabe sobre a biologia da espécie, em especial, sobre a sua reprodução. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: 1) caracterizar morfo-histologicamente a gônada de M. coffeus; 2) descrever os principais eventos da gametogênese e associá-los a uma escala de estágios de maturidade; 3) avaliar temporalmente a frequência dos estágios de maturidade e sua possível relação com os fatores ambientais, como a temperatura da água, do ar e do sedimento, a umidade relativa, a salinidade e a pluviosidade, e 4) caracterizar a postura, os ovos e a véliger recém-eclodida de M. coffeus. Foram realizadas coletas mensais de fevereiro de 2007 a janeiro de 2009, no manguezal da Praia de Arpoeiras, município de Acaraú-Ceará, na Região Nordeste do Brasil. A caracterização das fases de desenvolvimento da gônada foi realizada utilizando-se técnicas histológicas de rotina. Os resultados deste estudo mostram que Melampus coffeus é um hermafrodita simultâneo. Os folículos apresentam elementos masculinos e femininos, distribuindo-se na gônada intercalados radialmente. M. coffeus apresenta um ciclo reprodutivo sincrônico bem definido, evidenciando-se períodos sucessivos de amadurecimento, de liberação e de repouso. O diâmetro médio dos oócitos apresentou correlação negativa com a salinidade e positiva com a pluviosidade. Os resultados indicam que, nos períodos de estiagem, não há atividade reprodutiva. Após essa estação, quando os valores de pluviosidade aumentam e a salinidade diminui, as populações são bastante densas e predominam indivíduos pequenos.

ABSTRACT

In this work the epipodium morphology of the marine snail Prisogaster niger is described. In this gastropods the epipodium includes a complex of structures among which the neck lobes, epipodial ridge, epipodial tentacles and epipodial papillae constitute the most remarkable characters. Although these features are commonly found among trochoidean taxa, the observation of the epipodium, compared with the literature, revealed potential autapomorphic characters of diagnostic value for the genus and the subfamily Prisogasterinae, like epipodial lamellae and epipodial tuft.


En este trabajo se describe la morfología del epipodio del caracol marino Prisogaster niger. En esta especie el epipodio está conformado por un complejo de estructuras entre las cuales los lóbulos del cuello, rebordes epipodiales, tentáculos epipodiales y papilas epipodiales constituyen conspicuos caracteres. El estudio de la morfología del epipodio reveló potenciales autapomorfías de valor diagnóstico para la subfamilia Prisogasterinae.

ABSTRACT

Abundance, size structure and fecundity of Voluta musica (Caenogastropoda: Volutidae) in three sites of the north coast of Araya Peninsula, Venezuela. Considering the intensive artisanal fishing activity and the consequent carrion discard found at Isla Caribe, in relation to other two sites with no intensive artisanal fishing activity, we expect different effects on some features of V. musica life history (larger egg capsules, larger organisms, higher abundance of adult organisms). In this paper we compare some population parameters of Voluta musica at three localities in the north coast of the Araya Peninsula in Venezuela under different fishing exploitation regimes. The samples were taken monthly during 2008 and 2009 at Isla Caribe, Isla Lobos and Bajo Cuspe. At each site, samples were taken within three areas of 40m². The abundance of V. musica ranged between 5 ind/120m² to 30 ind/120m² with significant differences between sites (F=7.77; p<0,01). Organisms from Isla Caribe were larger in size (p=0,045), than those in the other two sites. There is a significant differences in the number of egg capsules between sites and between months, and there is clear evidence that Isla Caribe has the largest abundance of egg capsules (p<0,01) suggesting that the extra feeding source (carrion) found at Isla Caribe could have a positive effect on the reproductive potential of the V. musica population at this site.


Teniendo en cuenta la intensa actividad pesquera artesanal y subsecuente fuente adicional de alimento como carroña en Isla Caribe, se esperaría un efecto sobre algunos parámetros poblacionales de V. musica como: mayor número de ovicápsulas, individuos de tallas mayores y densidades de caracoles adultos mayores. Con el presente trabajo se desea conocer la abundancia, estructura de talla y fecundidad de Voluta musica en tres sitios de la costa norte de la Península de Araya en las que existen actividades de pesca diferenciales. Se realizaron muestreos mensuales entre 2008 y 2009 en Isla Caribe, Isla Lobos y Bajo Cuspe, en cada uno con 3 áreas de 40m². La abundancia varió de 5ind/120m² a 30ind/120m², con diferencias significativas entre los sitios (F= .77; p<0,01), siendo igual para Bajo Cuspe e Isla Caribe (p=0,39) pero distinta y menor en Isla Lobos, (p=0,008; 0,0149). Los individuos de Isla Caribe demostraron ser más grandes (p=0,045). Existen diferencias significativas entre sitios y entre meses en el número de ovicápsulas (p<0,01), siendo Isla Caribe el sitio con mayor abundancia de ovicápsulas (p<0,01). Esto sugiere que el alimento suplementario en forma de carroña podría incrementar el potencial reproductivo de la población en Isla Caribe.

ABSTRACT

Distribution and taxonomy of Pyrgophorus platyrachis (Caenogastropoda: Hydrobiidae) in the Sistema de Maracaibo, Venezuela. The presence of a microgastropod identified as Potamopyrgus sp. Was detected previously in the Maracaibo System; nevertheless, a detailed morphological analysis identified this snail in other genera. The objective of this work is to update the distribution and taxonomy of Pyrgophorus platyrachis in the Maracaibo System, Venezuela in samples obtained between 2001 and 2009. The presence of hundreds of individuals of P. platyrachis were observed in the estuary, indeed in the localities of the Gran Eneal lagoon (4 111 snails), Peonías lagoon (229 snails), Punta Capitán Chico (758 snails), San Francisco (2 517 snails), Curarire (240 snails), Apon River mouth (173 snails), Ojeda City (240 snails), Bachaquero (128 snails) and Tomoporo de Agua (385 snails). We performed a taxonomical analysis, and emphasized in ecological aspects, such as the distribution of the species and habitat features, as near vegetation and type of associated sediment. We found three morphotypes of the species, one smooth, another with spiral striations and the other with spines. Smooth morphotype was exclusive of the Gran Eneal lagoon, Peonías lagoon, Punta Capitan Chico and Apon River mouth localities, whereas the other two morphotypes were found together in the remaining localities. According to our detailed anatomical and taxonomical analysis we propose a synonymy between P. platyrachis and the other species described like Pyrgophorus parvulus and Pyrgophorus spinosus. Rev. Algunos autores han planteado que los géneros Pyrgophorus Ancey 1888 y Potamopyrgus Stimpson 1865, son sinónimos, mientras que otros opinan que ambos se encuentran restringidos geográficamente. La similitud en la escultura de la concha, es lo que ha llevado a que sean considerados sinónimos, sin embargo las especies de Pyrgophorus son mucho más pequeñas, con cinco o menos vueltas y de sutura poco profunda. El objetivo de este trabajo es dar a conocer la distribución y taxonomía del gasterópodo de agua dulce Pyrgophorus platyrachis en el Sistema de Maracaibo, estado Zulia, Venezuela. Durante muestreos efectuados entre 2001 y 2009 se detectó la presencia de cientos de individuos de P. platyrachis en las localidades de la laguna de Gran Eneal, laguna Las Peonías, Punta Capitán Chico, San Francisco, Curarire, desembocadura del Río Apón, Ciudad Ojeda, Bachaquero y Tomoporo de Agua. Por lo tanto, se realizó un análisis taxonómico de los ejemplares obtenidos, destacando su distribución y la presencia de tres morfotipos: liso, enroscado y espinoso; el primero limitado a la Laguna de Gran Eneal, las Peonías, desembocadura del Río Apón y Punta Capitán Chico, mientras que los otros dos se encuentran juntos en las localidades restantes. Además, se propone la sinonimia entre P. platyrachis y otras especies descritas como Pyrgophorus parvulus y Pyrgophorus spinosus.

ABSTRACT

Deroceras reticulatum is a misanthropic European species spread widely throughout South America. At the moment this species is considered a 'pest' in direct sowing such as maize, soybean, sunflower, wheat, alfalfa and clovers, among others. The aim of this paper is to report the first record of D. reticulatum in the Reserva de Usos Multiples Isla Martín García, Buenos Aires province and to provide information about this species distribution in five Argentina provinces.


Deroceras reticulatum é uma espécie sinantrópica oriunda da Europa e com grande dispersão na América do Sul. Esta espécie é considerada atualmente praga dos cultivos de semeadura direta de milho, soja, trigo, girassol, alfafa e trevos, entre outros. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo comunicar o primeiro achado do agriolimácido D. reticulatum na Reserva de usos múltiplos Ilha Martín García, província de Buenos Aires e proporcionar informação sobre a distribuição desta espécie em cinco províncias argentinas.

ABSTRACT

Some of the gastropods of the Baja California peninsula are of commercial value, but the majority are not. Among the less commercially valuable species are members of the genus Tegula, which are ecologically important because of their abundance and the trophic level they occupy. Mature specimens of T. eiseni, T. funebralis, T. aureotincta, T. gallina, and T. regina were collected from two rocky reefs close to Bahía Tortugas, B.C.S. and were processed using a paraffin-embedding technique. All of these species are dioecious, without external sexual dimorphism; in adults, the female gonads are green moss colored while male gonads are cream colored. The gonadal tissue is limited externally by a single ciliated cylindrical epithelium with plentiful granular glandular cells and is located on a connective tissue and muscular fiber layer. This layer is invaginated towards the gonad core, creating radially distributed trabeculae where the germinal tissue is found. The size of the oogonia fluctuates between 10 and 30 um, and that of the developing oocytes ranges between 30 and 140 um. In this stage, the cells are pyriform with a peduncle linked to the trabeculae. Mature oocytes have an average size of 165 um and present a well-defined chorion and a large quantity of vitelline platelets that occupy the whole cytoplasm. In the five species, the development in males is similar until the spermatid stage. In general, the average size of the spermatic cell nucleus is 2.5 um, while the flagellum length varies from 35 to 45 um. The species differ in the shape of the acrosome.


La costa oriental de la Península de Baja California se caracteriza por ser una zona de alta productividad biológica en la que coexiste un elevado número de gastrópodos, algunos de alto valor comercial y otros, la gran mayoría, no. Tal es el caso de diversas especies del Género Tegula, las cuales, ya sea por su abundancia y/o por el nivel trófico que ocupan dentro de la comunidad, resultan relevantes. Ejemplares adultos de Tegula eiseni, T. funebralis, T. aureotincta, T. gallina y T. regina, fueron colectados en dos arrecifes rocosos próximos a Bahía Tortugas, B.C.S. y procesados mediante la técnica de inclusión en parafina. Las especies estudiadas son dioicas sin dimorfismo sexual externo; la gónada de las hembras adultas es color verde musgo, mientras que la de los machos es color crema. La gónada se encuentra limitada externamente por un epitelio cilíndrico simple ciliado con abundantes células glandulares granulares, que se asienta sobre una capa de tejido conjuntivo y fibras musculares. Esta capa se invagina formando trabéculas de disposición radial donde se desarrolla el tejido germinal. Las ovogonias presentan un tamaño que fluctúa entre 10 y 30 um, en tanto que el de los ovocitos en desarrollo varía entre 30 y 140 um; en este estadio, las células son piriformes con un pedúnculo, por medio del cual se unen a las trabéculas. Los ovocitos maduros tienen un tamaño promedio de 165 um, presentan un corion bien definido y una gran cantidad de plaquetas vitelinas que ocupan la totalidad del citoplasma. En los machos el desarrollo es similar en las cinco especies, hasta la etapa de espermátide. En general, el tamaño promedio del núcleo de la célula espermática es de 2,5 um, mientras que el flagelo tiene una longitud que fluctúa entre 35 y 45 um. La forma del acrosoma es diferente para cada especie.

ABSTRACT

The genus Adelomelon Dall, 1906 comprises a group of South American marine gastropods. We present updated information on the genus Adelomelon, with emphasis on the status and location of type material, including that of junior synonyms. Scaphella arnheimi Rivers, 1891 and Voluta paradoxa Lahille, 1895 are removed from the synonymy of Adelomelon ancilla (Lightfoot, 1758) and Adelomelon barattinii Klappenbach and Ureta, 1966 is included. The subgenus Weaveria Clench and Turner, 1964 is placed in synonymy with Adelomelon s.s. A key to the species of Adelomelon is provided.


O gênero Adelomelon Dall, 1906 engloba um grupo de gastrópodes sul-americanos. Apresentamos informações atualizadas sobre o gênero Adelomelon, com ênfase no status e localização do material-tipo, também dos sinônimos juniores. Os táxons Scaphella arnheimi Rivers, 1891 e Voluta paradoxa Lahille, 1895 são removidos da lista sinonímica de Adelomelon ancilla (Lightfoot, 1758) e Adelomelon barattinii Klappenbach and Ureta, 1966 é incluído. Também o subgênero Waveria Clench and Turner, 1954 é colocado na lista sinonímica de Adelomelon s.s. e uma chave para as espécies de Adelomelon é apresentada.

ABSTRACT

Foi estudada a macro-anatomia do sistema reprodutor do escargot das espécies Achatina fulica e Achatina monochromatica e estabelecidos os parâmetros morfológicos comparativos de ambas espécies. Foram utilizados 15 exemplares de cada espécie com quase 12 meses de idade pertencentes à mesma família. E estes foram sacrificados por congelamento (-2ºC). A coleta do sistema reprodutor foi feita após a retirada da concha e dissecação do animal. Verificou-se que, apesar dos animais terem sido mantidos nas mesmas condições ambientais e alimentares bem como submetidos ao mesmo tipo de seleção, o desenvolvimento dos órgãos reprodutores apresentou certa variação. Os aspectos morfológicos de alguns segmentos do sistema reprodutor, nas duas espécies, diferem macroscopicamente, porém, a disposição e a localização destes segmentos são idênticas.


The macro-anatomy of the reproductive system of both Achatina fulica and Achatina monochromatica was studied, by establishing the morphologic parameters of both species. Fifteen samples of each species with nearly twelve years old from the same family were used. The specimens were sacrificed by freezing (-2ºC). The collection of the reproductive system was made after the retreat from the shell and dissection of the animal. It was observed that even if the specimens have been maintained in the same environmental and alimentary conditions, as well as submitted to the same type of selection, the development of their reproductive organs show some variation. In both species, some segments of the reproductive system morphologic aspects differ macroscopically, although the disposition and the location of these segments are identical.

ABSTRACT

En la presente investigación se realizó la caracterización histológica del tubo digestivo de Polystira albida (Toxoglossa:Turridae) mediante microscopía óptica, utilizando ejemplares colectados en la Sonda de Campeche. Los resultados del análisis muestran que los labios, la boca y la probóscide presentan un epitelio cilindrico simple ciliado. La cavidad bucal tiene un epitelio cilindrico estratificado. El esófago presenta un epitelio cilindrico simple con células glandulares granulares acidófilas (naturaleza proteica), y es el sitio donde comienza la digestión. El estómago se divide en tres regiones histológicas, y tiene dos tipos de epitelio, uno cilindrico simple ciliado y otro cilindrico simple; el primero está formado por abundantes células glandulares acidófilas y basófilas (naturaleza proteica y glicoproteica', respectivamente); y el segundo contiene slo células glandulares acidófilas. La glándula digestiva está constituida por adenómeros túbulo-acinosos con células glandulares acidófilas y basófilas, en diferentes grados de secreción y los conductos presentan un epitelio cilindrico ciliado con células glandulares de ambos tipos. El intestino se divide en cinco regiones histológicas, la primera presenta un tiflosol con dos tipos de epitelio, cilindrico simple y cilindrico simple con chapa estriada; y el resto del tracto tiene un epitelio cilindrico simple ciliado con células glandulares granulares acidófilas y pliegues de diferentes tamaños que aumentan o reducen la cavidad del conducto. Se concluye que existen diferencias, principalmente en la región anterior del tubo digestivo (cavidad bucal, esófago y estómago), con respecto a las descripciones generales realizadas para la subclase Prosobranchia.


In the present investigation it was realized a histological characterization of the digestive tract of Polystira albida (Toxoglossa: Turridae), by using optic microscopy of specimens collected in Sonda de Campeche. Results of analysis show that lips, mouth and proboscis present a simple columnar epithelium with cilia. Buccal cavity has a stratified columnar epithelium. Esophagus presents a simple columnar epithelium with acidophilic granular glandular cells (proteic nature), and it is the place where digestion starts. Stomach is divided in three histological regions that have two epithelial types, simple columnar with cilia and without one; the first is formed by a lot of acidophilic and basophilic glandular cells (proteic and glycoproteic nature respectively), and the second only contains acidophilic glandular cells. Digestive gland is constituted by tubule-acinous adenomers with acidophilic and basophilic glandular cells in different grades of secretion, and ducts have simple columnar epithelium with cilia and scarcely glandular cells. Intestine is divided in five histological regions, the first presents atyphlosole with two types of epithelium, simple columnar with stratified border; the rest of the tract has simple columnar epithelium with cilia, acidophilic granular glandular cells and folds of different sizes that increase or reduce the cavity duct. Based on previous this, we conclude that in this study exist differences principally in front region of digestive tract (buccal cavity, esophagus and stomach) compared to general descriptions realized for Prosobranchia subclass.
