ABSTRACT

This article is a result of the research that is being developed in the Doctorate of the Post-graduation Program in Psychoanalysis, at the State University of Rio de Janeiro/UERJ, about the uncanny and the doppelganger in literature and cinema. To articulate psychoanalysis, literature, and cinema, we choose Freud and Lacan's reflections on the uncanny and the doppelganger. This theme has been articulated in literary texts with different names, such as: doppelganger, the shadow, the echo, twins, the image obtained in the picture and the reflection in the mirror. Our purpose is to analyze Michelangelo Antonioni's The Passenger - Profession: Reporter (1975), from the representation of the doppelganger as someone who looks alike. The doppelganger was inaugurated by Plautus' Amphitryon. Even Lacan said in The Seminar, book 2: the Ego in Freud's Theory and in the Technique of Psychoanalysis, that was Plautus who introduced the concept of doppelganger.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To determine the genes in which exist overlapping ORF in Merlin strains of human cytomegalovirus, and to reveal their structure and functional characteristics.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>We search for overlapping genes of ORF in HCMV Merlin strains' whole genome by Bioinformatics methods, analyzing coding sequence CDS and starting and ending sites of ORF, calculating the length of CDS and ORF, analyzing the molecular weight of encoding protein, overlapping length and coding direction of protein, identifying overlapping sequences and overlapping types, analyzing the expression phase of overlapping genes and the function of proteins.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>There were 39 overlapping ORF genes in HCMV Merlin strains, accounting for 23% of total genes. Among these 39 genes, there are 13 IE genes, 9 E genes and 17 L genes, which can be divided into 16 contigs. There are 11 contigs when two genes overlap, with 3 contigs in three genes overlapping, and 2 contigs in four genes overlapping. The functions of overlapping genes are widely.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>We found that there are a lot of complex overlapping genes in HCMV Merlin strains, which are basis for further study of the transcription and translation mechanism of overlapping genes.</p>

ABSTRACT

Human alpha(1)-acid glycoprotein (AGP) or orosomucoid (ORM) is a major acute phase protein that is thought to play a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis. Human AGP is the product of a cluster of at least two adjacent genes located on HSA chromosome 9. Using a range of restriction endonucleases we have investigated DNA variation at the locus encoding the AGP genes in a group of healthy Caucasians. Polymorphisms were identified using BamHI, EcoRI, BglII, PvuII, HindIII, TaqI and MspI. Nonrandom associations were found between the BamHI, EcoRI and BglII RFLPs. The RFLPs detected with PvuII, TaqI and MspI were all located in exon 6 of both AGP genes. The duplication of an AGP gene was observed in 11 of the individuals studied and was in linkage disequilibrium with the TaqI RFLP. The identification and characterization of these polymorphisms should prove useful for other population and forensic studies
