ABSTRACT

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an acute viral disease characterized by fever, hemorrhage, and renal failure. Among the various hemorrhagic complications of HFRS, the spontaneous rupture of an arteriovenous malformation of the testicular vessels with a retroperitoneal hematoma is a rare finding. Here, we report a case of HFRS complicated by a massive retroperitoneal hematoma that was treated with transcatheter arterial embolization.

ABSTRACT

Graves' disease (GD) is generally presented by thyrotoxicosis with hyperthyroidism, and it is an organ-specific autoimmune disease induced by thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor autoantibodies. However, among diverse etiologies, viral infections have been suggested to trigger or to be involved in the pathogenesis of GD. Hantaan virus infection causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is common in South Korea and its pathogenesis is suggested to be an immunologic mechanism. We have experienced a patient who was diagnosed as HFRS with thyrotoxicosis. So we herein report the case as GD combined with the hantaan virus infection.

ABSTRACT

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an acute viral disease characterized by fever, hemorrhage and renal failure. Among the various hemorrhagic complications of HFRS, spontaneous rupture of the kidney and perirenal hematoma are very rare findings. We report here on a case of HFRS complicated by massive perirenal hematoma, and this was treated with transcatheter arterial embolization.

ABSTRACT

We describe a 51-yr-old man presenting with syncope due to torsade de pointes. The torsade de pointes was refractory to conventional medical therapy, including infusion of isoproterenol, MgSO4, potassium, lidocaine, and amiodarone. His past history, physical findings, and hormone study confirmed that QT prolongation was caused by anterior hypopituitarism that developed as a sequela of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. The long QT interval with deep inverted T wave was completely normalized 4 weeks after starting steroid and thyroid hormone replacement. Hormonal disorders should be considered as a cause of torsade de pointes, because this life-threatening arrhythmia can be treated by replacing the missing hormone.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of human hantavirus infection in Singapore is low. Hitherto, only 2 cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) have been reported. A third case is reported here of a ragman who had the classical manifestations of HFRS, confirmed by serology. In addition, his condition was complicated by liver dysfunction and neurological disturbance. After a protracted stay, the patient was finally discharged from hospital 5 months after the onset of his severe illness.

ABSTRACT

Korean hemorrhagic fever is an acute febrile illness which causes hemorrhagic nerrosis of multiple internal organs. Some orular symptoms are described by physicians without ophthalmic examination. The authors evaluated early ocular manifestations in 21 patients (42 eyes) with Korean hemorrhagic fever, who were admitted from Oct. to Nov. in 1984. The results are summarized as follows: 1. In eleven patients (22 eyes, 52.4%), visual disturbances caused by transitory myopia were observed. 2. During the period of transitory myopic change, the intraocular pressure in the group of refrartive change was significantly raised compared to that in the group of non-refrartive change. 3. In the group of refractive change, increasing intraocular pressure and a shallowing of the anterior chamber were observed accompanied by transitory myopic change. 4. During the earIy phase of the illness, lid edema, chemosis, conjunctival injection, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and macular edema were observed.
