ABSTRACT

There is increasing need for network connecting personal computers(PC) together. Thus Local Area Network(LAN) emerged, which was designed to allow multiple computers to access and share multiple files and programs and expensive peripheral devices and to communicate with each user. We built PC-LAN in our department that consisted of 1) hardware-9 sets of personal computers(IBM compatible 80386 DX, 1 set:80286 AT, 8sets) and cables and network interface cards (Ethernet compatible, 16bits) that connected PC and peripheral devices 2) software - network operating system and database management system. We managed this network for 6 months. The benefits of PC-LAN were 1) multiuser (share multiple files and programs, peripheral devices) 2) real time data processing 3) excellent expandibility and flexibility, compatibility, easy connectivity 4) single cable for networking ) rapid data transmission 6) simple and easy installation and management 7) using conventional PC's software running under DOS(Disk Operating System) without transformation 8) low networking cost. In conclusion, PC-LAN provides an easier and more effective way to manage multiuser database system needed at hospital departments instead of more expensive and complex network of minicomputer or mainframe.

ABSTRACT

A computerized system for monitoring district-wise operational performance and epidemiological progress using existing regular and special monthly reports of the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) is presented. The same system, with some minor modifications could be used for programme assessment at the Leprosy Control Unit level also. The advantage of the system is the speed with which it can generate output in the form of comparative tables and graphs for different regions for use by programme managers for making overall assessments in time and for sending feedback reports to workers at various levels, for self-assessment and for taking timely corrective action. The system presented provides immediate and easy access to the stored and/or processed information (indicators etc.,) at any time. The system has been pilot-tested using monthly reports from eighteen districts of Tamil Nadu.

ABSTRACT

We measured the horizontal and vertical diameter of the cornea, axial length and lens power in 314 patients who were admitted for cataract extraction. The data was analyzed by Minicomputer (honewel level 6 Model 57, U.S.A.) Cobal language. The results were as follows; 1) The average of the horizontal corneal diameter was 11.47 mm in the males and 11.17 mm in the females, and difference of the horizontal corneal diameter was 0.30 mm between both sexes. The average of the vertical corneal diameter was 10.80 mm in the males and 10.48 mm in the females and the difference of the vertical corneal diameter was 0.32 mm between both sexes. The horizontal and vertical corneal diameter in the males was loger than that of the females in adult. 2) The coeneal diameter was longest in the 41~50 years old group in male and 51~60 yaers old group in femele. The horizontal and vertical corneal diameter showed a tendency to decrease with age in adult. 3) We obtained significant changes statistically in that the cornea diameter showed atendency to increase as axial length increased in adult. 4) The corneal diameter was longest in the 15.01~16.00 Diopter group in lens power and the cornea diameter showed a tendency to decrease as lens power increased.
