ABSTRACT

A study of the relation of fecal egg excretion to worm burden and clinical features was carried out in 45 opisthorchiasis patients who had no signs of biliary obstruction. The fecal egg excretion was consistent and correlated with the worm burden. Although there was no definite association between clinical signs and intensity of infection, mild hepatomegaly and thickened wall or dilatation of the gallbladder were found more commonly in heavily infected patients. Eosinophilia was observed more often than previous reports. Concomitant parasitic infections were found in 82% of the patients. After praziquantel treatment, egg counts increased greatly during the first few days then decreased to very low levels in 7 days.

ABSTRACT

Serum alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 1-antichymotrypsin and alpha 2-macroglobulin increased significantly in patients suffering from liver diseases: hepatoma, amoebic liver abscess, hepatitis, hepatic cirrhosis, cholangiocarcinoma, carcinoma of the head of pancreas including liver fluke infection (opisthorchiasis). Marked increase of alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin were found in cholangiocarcinoma, carcinoma of the head of pancreas, amoebic liver abscess, hepatic cirrhosis and hepatoma. alpha 2-macroglobulin increased markedly in hepatic cirrhosis. The concentrations of protease inhibitors found in opisthorchiasis were only moderately elevated.

ABSTRACT

A total of 122 patients were treated with a single dose of praziquantel 40 mg per kilogramme body weight, with 96 patients completing the follow up period of 60 days. The parasitological cure rate was 95.8% by single faecal examination. These patients had mild clinical manifestations. The hematological, biochemical and the liver function tests were within the normal limits. High eosinophilia was observed in 84.5% but there were no significant difference after eradication of the flukes. No significant changes were observed in the laboratory investigation at day 60 post treatment.

ABSTRACT

An automated assay of anti-P1 allohemagglutinins has been carried out on sera of 61 individuals from Southeast Asia : 28 with clonorchiasis, 18 with opisthorchiasis and 15 control subjects. Anti-P1 activity was detected in 61% of the opisthorchiasis sera, 57% of the clonorchiasis sera and in 26.6% of the control subjects. Their concentration, in the sera, was low in control subjects and exceptionally high in clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis (up to 13 and 22 times the maximum concentration of the control subjects, respectively). In all cases the anti-P1 antibodies were of IgM class. The results suggested that Clonorchis and Opisthorchis were responsible for immunization of the patients, with P1 alloantigen.
