ABSTRACT

The first Regional Meeting on Improved DPT Vaccine and DTP-based Combination Vaccines, Washington, D.C., Sept. 1993, organized by SIREVA of PAHO in cooperation with the Children's Vaccine Initiative, formulated, inter alia, the following recommendation: "support research and development leading to the production of improved, new and combined vaccines in conjunction with the CVI and other related programs. A Program of Consortia for Research and Development for new DTP vaccines was designed to implement this recommendation. This Consortia will be multidisciplinary and made up of scientists and technicians in various institutions in different countries. They will cover all aspects of basic, directed and applied research in the development, production and quality control of the new vaccines. The active participation in research and technical cooperation among different institutions, public or private, from different countries of the Region, will enable the Region itself to take part in the development of new immunizing agents. This Master Plan will serve as the basis for the design, organization and implementation of the project
