ABSTRACT

The experiment was carried out with the objective of evaluating the gross margin, the productive and reproductive performance of beef heifers kept exclusively on ryegrass pasture (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) or ryegrass receiving 0.5 and 1.0% of body weight (BW) of whole rice bran as supplement. The grazing method was the rotational and the interval between grazings was set by the thermal sum required for the appearing of 1.5 ryegrass leaf (187.5ºC). The experimental design was completely randomized with repeated measures. Heifers average daily gain did not differ between the feeding systems. The stocking rate and weight gain per area were higher when heifers received 1.0% BW of whole rice bran. The higher gross margin was observed when heifers received 0.5% BW. The variable cost obtained for the different feeding systems showed increasing behavior depending on the WRB levels, surpassing the exclusive use of ryegrass in 49.4% and 81.8%. The final body weight, body condition score and reproductive tract score did not differ between the feeding systems. Considering an adult animal with an average body weight of 450kg, the heifers at the beginning of the experiment showed 34% of mature body weight and final average body weight of 56% of adult weight. The use of rice bran levels (FAZ) in the rearing of beef heifers under rotational grazing on ryegrass does not change the average daily gain and the reproductive tract score. The supply of 1% FAI showed substitutive effect, providing an increase in capacity of 31,2% and 38.3% rate of the gain per area. The food system AZ0,5 allowed a higher gross margin, as the economic return was positive in all food systems, with better return calculated for the exclusive use of ryegrass.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Dietary fiber requirements are met by only a small fraction of the population. There is need for supplemented foods to fill this gap. Rice bran (RB) is high in fiber and has antioxidant properties. The effects of rice bran fiber on several metabolic indicators and the antioxidant capacity of rice bran in rats was reported. Rats were divided into 4 dietary groups: Vitamin E-sufficient with (+VitE/RB+) or without (+VitE/RB-) rice bran; Vitamin E-deficient with (-VitE/RB+) or without (-VitE/RB-) rice bran. Food intake, growth and feed efficiency were similar in all groups but wet and dry fecal mass of the RB+ groups were 3 times higher than the RB- groups. Blood hemoglobin and liver iron were also similar among all groups. However, the liver VitE concentration of the rats of (-VitE/RB-) group was 10x lower than the (+VitE/RB-) group. In contrast, liver VitE of the rats (-VitE/RB+) was only 2.6x lower. This effect of RB was also seen in erythrocytes since, catalase and glutathione reductase increased in the VitE deficient rats but RB prevented this increase. This study shows that dietary RB did not interfere with growth, feed efficiency and iron metabolism, it provided dietary fiber and laxation and partially prevented VitE deficiency.

ABSTRACT

Dermatitis has been observed in Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul, in cattle supplemented with defatted rice bran in an amounts equivalent to 1% of body weight. An outbreak of dermatitis in cattle associated with consumption of defatted rice bran in Rio Grande do Sul, is herein described. Out of a total of 26 3-year-old cattle consuming this ration, seven had lesions that were observed after 24 days on the ration. The lesions were observed in the distal hind limbs and were characterized by areas of alopecia with marked thickening of the epidermis with crust formation imparting a thicken and fissured aspect to the skin. The histological lesions observed in these cases were characterized as moderate superficial perivascular chronic dermatitis focally extensive, with irregular acanthosis and serocellular crusting. The gross lesions observed, together with epidemiological data, allow for a diagnosis of dermatitis associated with the consumption of defatted rice bran. Histologic changes, although not pathognomonic, are typically described in this disease.

ABSTRACT

An efficient selection system is one of the most important elements of plant genetic engineering. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of scutellum-derived embriogenic calli obtained from three colombian rice varieties (FEDEARROZ 2000, FEDEARROZ 50 and FEDEARROZ 369), to the selection marker hygromycin B. Aditionally, the response of these varieties to the regeneration protocol was measured. Four antibiotic concentrations were tested (25 mg/L, 50 mg/L, 75 mg/L and 100 mg/L) plus one control without hygromycin B. The results show that 50 mg/L of antibiotic in the regeneration medium is adequate for selection. This concentration prevents the formation of shoots, though the calli do not die. It was also established that the regeneration protocol is a low-efficiency system and it needs to be improved, in order to use it for colombian rice genetic engineering.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Studies suggest that the link between postprandial hyperglycaemia and cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus might be related to postprandial hypertriglyceridaemia and the increased levels of the highly atherogenic small and dense low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles. In this study we therefore aimed to determine which of the three popular carbohydrate foods has the highest potential of increasing postprandial triglyceride levels in type 2 diabetic patients and in healthy non diabetic individuals. METHODS: All subjects were studied on three different occasions seven days apart after an overnight fast. On each day of study, anthropometric indices were measured and after collecting fasting blood sample, subjects consumed bread, roti or rice within 10 min and water taken as wished. Subsequently, 7 ml of venous blood samples were collected at 60, 90, 120 and 150 min for insulin, glucose and lipids determinations. RESULTS: The diabetic and non diabetic healthy subjects had similar baseline body mass index, insulin, triglyceride, total and LDL-cholesterol. The mean percentage triglyceride increase after ingestion of the test foods was highest with bread and lowest with rice irrespective of diabetic status or ethnicity, and despite similar baseline triglyceride, insulin and body mass index levels, the diabetic patients of East Indian origin had comparatively higher incremental triglyceride levels for the three test foods than those of African origin. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION: Contrary to anecdotal perception, the commercially prepared whole wheat bread has the highest propensity to induce hypertriglyceridaemia especially among diabetic patients of East Indian origin.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In this study 100 exposed workers of the cotton ginner and the rice huller factories were examined clinically, mycologically by sputum culture, and immunologically for detection of precipitins in their sera against mould antigen. Sixty workers in the cotton ginner factory included 40 symptomatic and 20 asymptomatic workers, while in the rice huller factory 25 workers were symptomatic and 15 were asymptomatic, 20 matched control workers not exposed to the cotton and rice dust were examined. In addition air samples were collected from different departments of the cotton and rice factories searching for fungi; especially [Aspergillus species], Mucor and Rhizopus. Different species of fungi could be isolated from the sputae of many workers; Asp. mgier, Asp. flavus, Asp. fumigatus, Rhizopus and Mucor. The precipitin tests were positive in 18 cases out of 100 cases examined [18%]
