ABSTRACT

The adenohypophysis of the cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus was studied using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase method with antisera raised against piscine pituitary hormones and heterologous antisera against mammalian pituitary hormones. Antiserum raised against rabbit ACTH recognized a group of cells bordering the neurohypophysis (NH) in the rostral pars distalis (RPD). Anti-chum salmon prolactin (PRL) identified a compact group of cells in the periphery of the RPD. Gonadotropin II (GTH II), thyrotropin (TSH) and growth hormone (GH)-ir cells were localized in the proximal pars distalis. Ir-GTH II cells were also observed in the dorsal area of the pars intermedia (PI). Ir-GTH I cells could not be identified using anti-chum salmon GTH I, this may be due either to a failure of the antisera to recognize the gonadotropin or to a low expression of the hormone in adults of this species. PAS positive cells from the PI bound specifically with three different antisera raised against somatolactin (SL) of four different fish species. These cells surrounded deep branches of the NH in the PI.

ABSTRACT

Few prospective data are available regarding the association of pituitary-gonadal hormones, and the risk of developing diabetes mellitus. Therefore, FSH, LH and prolactin were determined in types I and II diabetic male Egyptian patients with and without complications [neuropathy or retinopathy] and nondiabetic healthy controls, testosterone was also assessed. All patients and controls underwent laboratory investigations, including fasting and post-prandial blood sugar level, serum levels of cholesterol, triacylglycerol, HDL-C and LDL-C

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Pituitary tumors from 90 patients were investigated using immunohistochemical study and the results were correlated with clinical records. There were 32 benign prolactinomas and two malignant counterparts, 13 growth hormone positive tumors. 10 corticotropic adenomas, and 10 gonadotropic tumors. Four tumors showed positivity for both prolactin and growth hormone, one prolactin and gonadotropin. An example of mixed, luteinizing hormone, prolactin and growth hormone was observed. Additionally, there was an adenoma composed of two compartments secreting prolactin and growth hormone. One patient had a recurrent gonadotropin adenoma after surgical removal of the original prolactinoma. Fifteen tumors were negative for all hormones and most were nonfunctioning clinically. The clinicopathologic correlations were found to be good for prolactinoma, growth hormone positive tumors and for tumors producing both prolactin and growth hormones causing a combined feature of hyperprolactinemia and acromegaly.
