ABSTRACT

Abstract The antennal sensilla are sensory organs formed by a group of neurons and accessory cells, which allow perception of environmental cues, which play a role as mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors. This study describes the post-embryonic development of the antennal sensilla of the stingless Tetragonisca angustula (Hymenoptera: Meliponini) workers. The development of the antennal sensilla begins in the transition stage of the pre-pupae to white-eyed pupae. The sensilla are completely developed at the black-eyed pupae stage, but they are covered by the old cuticle. The sensilla are exposed to the environment only in newly emerged workers of T. angustula, but it is possible that environmental stimuli can be recognized due to the pores in the old cuticle.

ABSTRACT

Wyeomyia exallos, a new mosquito species from Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, is described based on morphological characters of the adult female, male, male genitalia, pupa and fourth-instar larva. The morphological characters of Wy. exallos sp. nov. are compared with those of different subgenera of Wyeomyia as well as of species without subgeneric position. It is proposed that the new species should be placed in genus Wyeomyia Theobald without subgeneric assignment.

ABSTRACT

Immature stages of Memphis moruus stheno (Prittwittz) were subject of a behavior, biological and morphological study. The morphological study was carried out through observation by stereoscopic microscopy with camera lucida and micrometric lens attached for illustrations and measurements, respectively; and scanning electron microscopy for ultrastructural analysis. Behavioral data were obtained through direct observation in the field and laboratory. Eggs were laid on the underside of leaves of two Lauraceae species. The first to third instars build frass chains, the fourth and the fifth instars build a conical shelter using a single leaf of the host plant. Before pupation, larvae bend its body ventrally and the pupae are incapable of movement. Descriptions, illustrations and photographs of egg, all five instars and pupa are given. The cephalic morphology and chaetotaxy of first instar were described and illustrated. Results are compared with other Charaxinae immature stages.

ABSTRACT

Objetivos: Caracterizar morfologicamente e molecularmente o An. oswaldoi s.s.; caracterizar morfologicamente cinco espécies do complexo An. albitarsis; estabelecer caracteres morfológicos que permitam a separação entre as espécies do complexo An. albitarsis; solucionar problema de nomenclatura de An. marajoara. Resultados: Os adultos machos e fêmeas, larvas de quarto estadio e pupas de An. oswaldoi s.s., An. albitarsis s.s.,An. marajoara e An.deaneorum foram redescritos, e descritos aqueles de An. albitarsis B e An. albitarsis E. Os resultados das análises multivariadas dos caracteres morfométricos demonstraram...

ABSTRACT

Anopheles subpictus was reported to be a complex of four sibling species provisionally designated as species A, B, C and D. Present studies in District Sonepat, Haryana have revealed the sympatricity of species A, C and D based on the reported distinct morphotaxanomical identification characters in different life stages of the mosquito. Studies on field collected adult mosquitoes and isofemale progeny did not show variations in the prevalence of sibling species and also showed a possibility of use of a single reported morphological character in a given life stage for the identification of the members of this complex.

ABSTRACT

The larval and pupal stages of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) rondoni (Neiva and Pinto) (Albimanus Section) are fully described and illustrated for the first time. The larval stage is similar to An. (Nys.) strodei Root. It can be recognized by the following combination of characteres: clypeal index, 1.6-2.9; single, aciculate setae 2,3-C; seta 3-C 0.5-0.7 the lenght of 2-C; setae 1,2-P rarely sharing a common tubercle; seta 1-P with narrow leaflets. The pupal stage is distinguished from other Nyssorhynchus by having setae 1-IV-VII and 5-V-VII branched. Only minor variation was found in setal counts between specimens from Peixoto de Azevedo, State of Mato Grosso and Bocaina, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

ABSTRACT

In order to study the pupation site preference which is an important component of larval behaviour, pupation height was scored in Drosophila ananassae, D. bipectinata and D. malerkotliana by using a large number of strains of these species. The mean pupation height of different strains ranged from 1.1 to 8.7 mm in D. ananassae, from 0.41 to 0.75 mm in D. bipectinata and from 1.0 to 1.3 mm in D. malerkotliana. The analysis of variance and t-test were performed to test intre- and interspecies variations in pupation height. These tests revealed significant variation among three species. Significant variations among different strains of the same species were also found in D. ananassae and D. bipectinata. These observations provide evidence for intra- and interspecies variations in pupation height in Drosophila. Variations among different strains of the same species in pupation height are attributable to genetic heterogeneity among the strains.
