ABSTRACT

Pre-operative diagnosis of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis [HPS] is essential to avoid delay in management or unnecessary operation. Twenty Four infants with suspected HPS were included in this study. Test feeds and abdominal sonography were done for all of them. Test feeds had no false positive and 3 false negative results. Ultrasonography had 2 false positive and 1 false negative results. Barium meal was performed in 14 patients and it had 1 false positive result. From this study we found that, whenever, the diagnosis of HPS can be made clinically we should proceed to surgery after adequate preparation, but in difficult and atypical cases imaging has an important role in confirming or excluding HPS
