ABSTRACT

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic infection of the mucous membrane caused by the Rhinosporiduim seeberi, which infects through transepithelial penetration. Although described worldwide, this entity is mostly found in the western hemisphere, afflicting young people, predominantly males, associated in many cases with recreational or professional contact with bath in ponds, rivers, or stagnant waters. The clinical features are varied depending on the affected membrane, in some cases mimicking other diseases postponing the correct diagnosis. Although nasal obstruction and epistaxis are the common clinical presentations in sinonasal rhinosporidiosis, patients with epiphora without a nasal mass often challenge the diagnosis. In the present case, we have documented a case of isolated lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis masquerading as chronic dacryocystitis, which was successfully managed by endoscopic excision, accompanied by a literature review.

ABSTRACT

Rhinosporidiosis is quite rare in Thailand, but the actual incidence may be higher than the numbers reflect. This is thought to be due to misdiagnosis by physicians who are unfamiliar with this disease entity or physicians who found a case but did not describe its presence. The authors report a case in a 17 year old male with the lesion involving both nasal cavities, nasopharynx and left maxillary sinus presenting with severe epistaxis, which was treated by complete surgical removal with electric cauterization of its base. We warn physicians who face this problem to be aware of this disease entity.

ABSTRACT

Rhinosporidiosis is a very common disease endemic in India, Ceylon, East Africa and part of America. Extremely rare in Europe. Nose, naso-pharynx, nasal sinuses, larynx are the common sites of affection, but urethral lesion is very rare. Reports from India so far as our knowledge goes are not available. Symmers may be the only case report available so far. For the rarity of site of affection, the case is reported.
