ABSTRACT

The rickettsial diseases are present in areas with favorableconditions such as socioeconomic and epidemiological characteristics. It is necessary to address thedeterminants of presentation in our country, where information is scarce. This study aims to describesome related epidemiological aspects and attempts to characterize for the first time in Peru thecirculating species of rickettsiae isolated from patients and also from vectors present in fourdepartments: Tacna, Tumbes, Loreto and Madre de Dios, which were collected during previouspopulation-based study to detect its prevalence.OBJECTIVES:Describe some characteristic, clinical-epidemiological and genomic aspects of the circulation ofrickettsias during the years 2011 and 2012 in 4 border areas of Peru.METHODS: We analyzed clinical and epidemiological data from 1,657 individuals of various agegroups. The information was obtained from records stored in a previous study and past and presentstudies received approval by the Ethics Committee of the INS and used the same informed consent. Inaddition, reactivated and propagated isolates from humans and also vectors macerated, obtained duringthe previous study were used to perform DNA extraction and PCR tests for the htrA and gltA gene inorder to proceed the genomic sequencing and identify the isolates...

ABSTRACT

In this study, rickettsial infection was searched in 108 canine blood samples and 22 Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Ixodida,Ixodidae) ticks collected on these dogs during 2011 and 2012 in Patos municipality, state of Paraíba, northeasternBrazil. Blood samples were tested through indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) by using antigens of six Rickettsiaspecies isolates from Brazil. All 108 dogs tested seronegative for R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, R. amblyommii, R. felis, R.rhipicephali, and R. bellii antigens, suggesting a non-endemic status of the studied region for spotted fever ricketsiosis.Among 22 R. sanguineus ticks, R. felis was detected in one (4.5%) specimen by PCR targeting a portion of the rickettsialgltA gene. The possible implications of this unusual PCR finding are discussed.

ABSTRACT

A study on tick-borne rickettsiosis was developed in the county of Santa Cruz do Escalvado, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where a clinical case of the disease, confirmed by necropsy, had been reported. Of the 1,254 ticks collected 1,061 belonged to the Amblyomma genus, 57 to the Rhipicephalus sanguineus species, 81 to Boophilus microplus, and 46 to Anocentor nitens. The hemolymph test associated with Gimenez staining showed that 18 of the 221 A. cajennense specimens, 1 of the 16 R. sanguineous, 1 of the 22 B. microplus, 3 of the A. nitens, and 1 of the A. ovale contanined rickettsia-like microorganisms. Only 3 A. cajennense ticks were positive under direct immunofluorescence. A. cajennense was the only species found on humans.

ABSTRACT

Cases of Brasilian spotted fever (BSF) have been occurred since 1985, in the rural area of Pedreira town, situated 160 km away from the city of Säo Paulo (longitude 46 degrees 54'07®, latitude 22 degrees 44'21®). Aiming at evaluating the prevalence of Brasilian spotted fever in this endemic area, single-serum samples were collected from 473 healthy persons, amongst city-dwellers and the local china industry workers. The obtained samples were tested by indirect immunofluorescence (IFA), in order to determine the antibodies titer for the group of Brasilian spotted fever. Twenty-five (5.3 per cent) were considered positive (titer 3 1:64) and thirty-one (6.5 per cent) were taken as ®borderline® (titer 1:32). The results show a serologically positivity rate similar to other areas, known as endemic ones within the country.
