ABSTRACT

This document is a description of the macroscopic functional anatomy of the ulna bony prominences in the White-footed Tamarin (Saguinus leucopus), a neotropical endemic, and monotypic primate of Colombia. Few studies have been conducted on its anatomy, and thus its ulnar morphology, an essential element for this animal's quadrupedal arboreal locomotion, remains unknown. This study is based on eight specimens, fixed in formalin at 10 % whose ulnas were extracted in order to describe the main bony prominences along with muscular and ligamentous fixation functions. These elements of the locomotor apparatus and the multiple anatomical contours of the ulna of the White-footed Tamarin, exhibit characteristics for positional and articular adjustment with other bones of the forelimb in harmony with the attachments of the muscles, essential for quadrupedal arboreal locomotion.

ABSTRACT

The Saguinus leucopus is an endemic and monotypic primate of Colombia with quadrupedal arboreal locomotion, but the study of its morphological adaptations are still scarce, therefore the specific knowledge of its muscles will allow to understand these adaptations and to establish better medical and surgical procedures in order to preserve this species. For this purposes, the two forearms of 10 S. leucopus specimens were dissected, they were fixed within a formaldehyde solution, phenic acid and mineral oil mixture. Among the craniolateral muscles of the forearm two muscles were independent for digits IV and V. They presented form, origin and insertion suitable for individual extension of each digit, with innervation and irrigation by the cranial interosseous nerve and the homonymous artery respectively; they show similarities and differences with other primates, it allows to conclude that the development of these muscles could enable a particular anatomical and functional individualization in these digits extension, this feature makes possible its quadrupedal arboreal locomotion.

ABSTRACT

The Saguinus leucopus is a neotropical, endemic, and monotypic Colombian primate; few studies have been reported about its anatomy, specially about its muscles, this being a fundamental element for the active motion of this primate in the trees. The aim of this study was to describe the gross anatomy of the brachioradialis muscle on the white-footed tamarin (Saguinus leucopus). Ten specimens were included in the study, fixed with formalin at 10% and their thoracic limbs dissected, from the superficial to the deep plane, describing the form, origin, insertion, innervation and irrigation of the Brachioradialis muscle. The conclusion we made is that this muscle represents a morphology and in this way it must contribute to the flexor and supinator elbow movements, and would have an accessory head in this species.

ABSTRACT

Genetic methods for the reintroduction of primates Saguinus, Aotus and Cebus (Primates: Cebidae) seized in Bogota, Colombia. Primates are one of more confiscated taxa by the environmental authorities in Bogota, Colombia. During 2008, 133 monkeys were confiscated; samples from 115 of them were sequenced by the mitochondrial cythocrome oxidase II gene (mtCOII) and 112 sequences obtained were of high quality. These sequences were compared with those obtained by our research group from individuals directly sampled in the field, with precise geographic origin. So, a more specific geographic area of the Colombian territory could be considered for a correct rehabilitation treatment during the reintroduction of these confiscated animals. The main results with five primate species were: 1- For all the specimens analyzed of Saguinus leucopus, they could be liberated in any geographical area of its distribution range, since only one gene pool was found. 2- For the 14 Aotus sp. individuals sequenced from the SDA (Environmental District Secretariat), one of them (A. vociferans) was coming from the Amazon, seven exemplars belonged to A. griseimembra from the Magdalena Valley and the Colombian Caribbean coasts, four individuals represented to A. brumbacki from the Colombian Eastern Llanos, and two were associated to A. azarae azarae from Northern Argentina and Paraguay (which means that illegal traffic of animals is arriving to Colombia from other South-American countries). 3-Out 14 Cebus albifrons sequenced, two belonged to the geographical area of C. a. versicolor, one to C. a. pleei, 10 to C. a. leucocephalus and one could be not assigned because its sequence yielded a great genetic divergence with respect to the other specimens sequenced of this species. 4- The two Cebus capucinus sequenced showed to be associated to a gene pool found in the Northern of Chocó, Sucre and Córdoba Departments. 5- Out 11 Cebus apella sequenced, 10 showed to belong to the gene pool presented in the Colombian Eastern Llanos and highly related (but differentiable) to Cebus apella apella from the French Guyana. It could be named C. a. fatuellus sensu Groves (2001). One exemplar sequenced could be not related with the other C. apella analyzed, nor the related taxa to the aforementioned species (C. a. paraguayanus =C. cay; C. xanthosternos; C. nigritus). Rev. Biol. Trop. 58 (3): 1049-1067. Epub 2010 September 01.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out with two groups of white footed tamarins (Saguinus leucopus) from confiscations and voluntary incomes. Animals were rehabilitated during ayear in Bogotá, with the aim of developing and recovering abilities to survive in their natural environment. Two enclosures were built to the used as releasing platforms ina forest of Tolima region. Animals were put in these enclosures in order to begin the process of adaptation to the new environment. At that time researchers did an ethological study to determine behavioral variations due to the change of environment. Animals were released and monitored to evaluate the rehabilitation process and their adaptation. It was observed a variation on behavior related with activities of movement, resting and social interaction, comparing with captivity records. After releasing, animalswere seen in places close to the pre-releasing enclosures, and it could show thatthey established their territories in that areas. There was not significant variation in the conformation of groups and there were not records of fighting among troops. These observations could show that the process of release achieved its goal, and it could beconsidered successful.

ABSTRACT

Saguinus inustus (Schwarz, 1951) is one of the neotropical primates least studied. The distribution of the species ranges from the north of the Solimões River, between the Negro and Japurá Rivers in Brazil, and Guayabero-Guaviare Rivers in Colombia. Nevertheless, due to the low number of specimens collected from the lower Japurá and lower Negro Rivers areas, the geographic distribution is so far poorly delineated. In this study, field data was composed of sightings and the collection of specimens during a survey of mammal diversity in the Amana Sustainable Development Reserve (ASDR). For this survey, two 40-day expeditions were carried out in 2004. The first one occurred during the flooded season in June and July, and the second was during the peak of the dry season in October. Direct sightings were made through hiking along transects, navigation along water channels with a 30-hp speedboat, and gliding along flooded trails in the forest. New records of S. inustus were made in 11 different localities in ASDR. The study has confirmed the presence of the species in the Amanã area, carrying out the first records of the species in flooded forest habitats.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains are important agents of infantile diarrhea all over the world, gaining even greater importance in developing countries. EPEC have also been isolated from various animal species, but most isolates belong to serotypes that differ from those recovered from humans. However, it has been demonstrated that several isolates from non-human primates belong to the serogroups and/or serotypes related to those implicated in human disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic differences between thirteen strains isolated from non-human primates and the same number of strains isolated from human infections. Human isolates belonged to the same serogroup/serotype as the monkey strains and the evaluation was done by analysis of random amplified polymorphic DNA. Dendrogram analysis showed that there was no clustering between human and monkey strains. Human and non-human isolates of the EPEC serotypes O127:H40 and O128:H2 shared 90 and 87 percent of their bands, respectively, indicating strong genomic similarity between the strains, leading to the speculation that they may have arisen from the same pathogenic clone. To our knowledge, this study is the first one comparing genomic similarity between human and non-human primate strains and the results provide further evidence that monkey EPEC strains correlate with human EPEC, as suggested in a previous investigation.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the influence of forest structural components on the occurence, size and density of groups of Bare-face Tamarin (Saguinus bicolor) - the most threatened species in the Amazon - and produced the first map of distribution of groups in large-scale spatial within the area of continuous forest. Population censuses were conducted between November 2002 and July 2003, covering 6400 hectares in the Ducke Reserve, Manaus-AM, Brazil. Groups of S. bicolor were recorded 41 times accordingly distributed in the environments: plateau (20); slopes (12); and lowlands (09). The mean group size was 4.8 indiv./group, and ranged from 2 to 11 individuals. In the sites where the groups were recorded, and in an equivalent number of sites where no tamarins were found located at least 500 m from those where they had been recorded, we placed 50 m x 50 m plots to record the following forest structural components: abundance of trees; abundance of lianas; abundance of fruiting trees and lianas; abundance of snags; abundance of logs; percentage of canopy opening; leaf litter depth; and altitude. Bare-face Tamarin more often uses areas with lower abundance of forest logs, smaller canopy opening and with higher abundance of snags, areas in the forest with smaller canopy opening present higher density of S. bicolor groups. Apparently this species does not use the forest in a random way, and may select areas for its daily activities depending on the micro-environmental heterogeneity produced by the forest structural components.

ABSTRACT

The Saguinus represent the basal genus of the Callitrichinae subfamily. Traditionally this genus is divided into three groups: Hairy, Mottled and Bare-face, however, molecular data failed to validate these groups as monophyletic units, as well as raised some subspecies to the species status. This is the case of the former subspecies Saguinus midas midas and S. midas niger, which are now considered as different species. In the present study, we sequenced a portion of the D-loop mtDNA region in populations from the East bank of the Xingu and from both banks of the Tocantins river, in order to test the effectiveness of large rivers as barriers to the gene flow in Saguinus. According to our results, the populations from the East and West banks of the Tocantins river are more divergent than true species like S. mystax and S. imperator. The Tocantins river may be acting as a barrier to gene flow, and consequently these very divergent populations may represent distinct taxonomic entities (species?).

ABSTRACT

The systematics of the subfamily Callitrichinae (Platyrrhini, Primates), a group of small monkeys from South America and Panama, remains an area of considerable discussion despite many investigations, there being continuing controversy over subgeneric taxonomic classifications based on morphological characters. The purpose of our research was to help elucidate the phylogenetic relationships within the monkey genus Saguinus (Callitrichinae) using a molecular approach to discover whether or not the two different sections containing hairy-faced and bare-faced species are monophyletic, whether Saguinus midas midas and Saguinus bicolor are more closely related than are S. midas midas and Saguinus midas niger, and if Saguinus fuscicollis melanoleucus and Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli really are different species. We sequenced the 957 bp ND1 mitochondrial gene of 21 Saguinus monkeys (belonging to six species and nine morphotypes) and one Cebus monkey (the outgroup) and constructed phylogenetic trees using maximum parsimony, neighbor joining, and maximum likelihood methods. The phylogenetic trees obtained divided the genus Saguinus into two groups, one containing the small-bodied species S. fuscicollis and the other, the large-bodied species S. mystax, S. leucopus, S. oedipus, S. midas, S. bicolor. The most derived taxa, S. midas and S. bicolor, grouped together, while S. fuscicollis melanoleucus and S. f. weddelli showed divergence values that did not support the division of these morphotypes into subspecies. On the other hand, S. midas individuals showed divergence compatible with the existence of three subspecies, two of them with the same morphotype as the subspecies S. midas niger. The results of our study suggest that there is at least one Saguinus subspecies that has not yet been described and that the conservation status of Saguinus species and subspecies should be carefully revised using modern molecular approaches.

ABSTRACT

EBV-carrying human cell lines, depending on whether the cells are derived from Burkitt's lymphoma [BL] tumor biopsies or transformed by EBV in vitro, have different growth properties in vitro. In contrast, there are no clear differences between tamarin tumor lines and tamarin LCLs in vitro. Both types of tamarin cell lines could grow in agarose and formed colonies unlike human LCLs, although with a lower cloning efficiency than BL lines. The growth patterns of the tamarin tumor lines resemble more those of human LCLs than human BL lines, although the observation that tamarin LCLs can grow in agarose whereas human LCLs cannot may be significant. If it is accepted for arguments sake that Raji BL cells are representative of human EBV BL tumor cells, then both tamarin LCLs and tumor lines are more tumorigenic as judged by the single criterion of growth in agarose

ABSTRACT

Presently, the State of Ceará reports the largest percentage of human rabies cases originated from wild animals in Brazil, transmitted by the principal simian species, the tamarin (Callithrix jacchus), found in various locations throughout the State, but concentrated along the coast. Epidemiological studies indicated that possibly the same virus caused the deaths in humans and non-human primates. This rabies virus seem to be different from all other identified so far.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

A case of toxoplasmosis in an adult male emperor tamarin (Saguinus imperator) is reported. The primate was found dead and no clinical sign was noticed before death. Pathological findings included moderate to severe interstitial pneumonia, multifocal necrotizing hepatitis and multifocal to coalescing necrotizing lymphadenitis. Immunohistochemistry assays (strepto-avidin-biotin-peroxidase) performed on paraffin embedded tissues (lung, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, heart, intestine and adipose tissue) were strongly positive for Toxoplasma gondii

ABSTRACT
