ABSTRACT

Smoking produces a deviation in various blood components of the body. Practically little information is available on the status of the blood picture in relation to serum iron, copper ceruloplasmin and blood glucose levels in smokers in comparison to non-smokers and athletes, before and after exercise, hence this attempt. This study involved thirty male volunteers aged 20 to 25 years, divided equally into three groups. serum samples were analyzed for iron, copper, ceruloplasmin and blood glucose levels and blood picture [Wbcs, Rbcs, Hb, PVC MCV, MCH and MCHC] was also estimated. Exhaustive exercise for 15-20 minutes was performed using an ergometer. From our study, it appears that smoking has a negative effects on haematologic measurements and on serum contents of iron, copper, ceruloplasmin and blood glucose

ABSTRACT

In Egyptian top athletes and a control non athletes, some anthropometric, physical fitness and haematological measurements were carried upon, the results revealed that the top athletes had a lesser weight specially the gymnastic players and they had a longer standing height specially basket and volley ball players than in the non athletes. The physical fitness measurements were better among the top athletes than the control group, but the hand ball players had the least performance of endurance test, volley ball and gymnastic players had a lesser running speed while the hand ball players had a better grip strength than other top athletes. It was observed that red blood cell count and haemoglobin content of blood were much lower among top athletes than non athletes. These observed differences may be attributed to either the method of selection of subjects in various sports or the type of training they practice
