ABSTRACT

A 59-year-old Korean man complained of a painless scrotal hard nodule and weak urine stream. The ultrasound scan revealed a 2.2-cm sized round heteroechogenic nodule located in the extratesticular area. Microscopic hematuria was detected in routine laboratory examinations. On scrotal exploration, multiple spargana were incidentally found in the mass and along the left spermatic cord. On cystoscopy, a 10-mm sized mucosal elevation was found in the right side of the bladder dome. After transurethral resection of the covered mucosa, larval tapeworms were removed from inside of the nodule by forceps. Plerocercoids of Spirometra erinacei was confirmed morphologically and also by PCR-sequencing analysis from the extracted tissue of the urinary bladder. So far as the literature is concerned, this is the first worm (PCR)-proven case of sparganosis in the urinary bladder.

ABSTRACT

The relationship between bladder tumors and Schistosoma haematobium is well known, but only sporadic cases of bladder infection due to Schistosoma mansoni have been reported. In this case, a 48-year-old woman with macroscopic hematuria, dysuria and a palpable abdominal mass was investigated. Ultrasound showed a large exophytic mass in the bladder. Transurethral resection of the bladder revealed viable eggs of Schistosoma mansoni. The patient was treated clinically with oxamniquine and surgery was performed to resect the large mass. This case shows that schistosomiasis Mansoni in the bladder can simulate bladder cancer.

ABSTRACT

Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) is one of the most prevalent intestinal parasites in the world. The urinary tract is rarely affected and few cases have been reported. We report a case of bladder infestation by mature female worms of E. vermicularis in a woman presenting with irritative voiding symptoms.

ABSTRACT

A biópsia revelou esquistossomose mansônica.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to study the safety and efficacy of electrovaporization as a new modality of treatment of bilharzial bladder ulcers. Sixty-six patients with bilharzial bladder ulcers have been treated by the use of vaportrode or pencil tip electrocautery electrode at high cutting current to evaporate the ulcer bearing area, till the perivesical tissue was exposed. Indwelling urethral catheters were fixed for one week. Successful vaporization of the ulcer bearing area was recorded in 59 patients. Failure to get satisfactory vaporization was reported in seven patients due to extensive calcification in the ulcer bearing area, for whom even trial of excision was failed. The operative time ranged from 7 to 18 minutes. Some postoperative complications occurred in the form of deep hematuria in four patients, peritonism in five patients and secondary hemorrhage in two patients. Symptomatic relief was recorded in 52 patients immediately after the removal of the catheter. Persistence of symptoms was encountered in five patients and proved to be due to persistence of the ulcer, as proved by cystoscopy in two patients and incomplete healing in three patients. Vaporization of chronic bilharzial bladder ulcer is an effective, easy and safe modality of treatment without considerable complications

ABSTRACT
